A HISTORY OF SAEFL (Season 10) – THE TRADING BOOM

Season 5 saw NW win the league with a monster squad of superb freaks.  But by the end of the season, some of the clubs players were looking tired – allowing IQ to nip in and win the cup.  So could Mike somehow work his magic again to record a second successive title for the club?  Watch on …

Season 6

As always, the season starts off with managers looking for the players that made it big over the summer.  So let’s take a peek:

CA FB B. Berlinnin 11.75 (not too bad for a player that was brought for 40k)

CA Am Todi 11.75 (what a double act!)

TB CF Z. Zahovic 11.5

TB CF M. Stewart 11.75 (another double act to be proud of)

JG CF S. Rowbottom 12

IQ AM G. Hoddle 12

AA DS Sylfar 11.5 (and a legend begins)

Gu WH Gus Jr 11.5

EU CM J. Cassidy 10

AR FB Justin Noah 9.5

AP FB B. Simpson 10.5 (and the legend begins)

The first week of the league saw some huge emping by some of the top sides in the league.  In particular, CA (with their 2 freaks doing the spadework), NW (with only the 4 freaks causing havoc) and AA (with an impeccable defence that would get more impeccable in due course) looked top quality.

In the second division, no one really shone, but many eyes glanced towards AP’s Simpson, who had become a freak in the off-season and was looking really, really good.

And on to trading.  This would become the season that broke all the records in this respect (as you may have seen from a recent mail from Peter).  In 16 separate deals, £2,065,000 swapped hands … not bad for a weeks work.  But things would get more heated yet in the swapping stakes.

Week 2 and …. Oooh …. A really weird green screen (nice).  A nice win for LU and NW in the league – but this week was all about the trading as well.

A huge deal for AA saw 12.5 S Curie move to the club with 10 NSL S Westin Dustbin for a very cool £2 million.  Just as big a shock, NW purchased JG’s 12 CF Rowbottom for £1.5 million.  Now had I known that Bart was willing to sell Bottom, then I think I would have been in the market for him!  This all added up to a trading bill of £3.785 million!

Cup time in week 3, and EU walk all over IQ by the tune of 5 goals to 2.  JG lose to NH 1-0, and a couple of the SA teams beat league opponents.  Good stuff.

Week 4, and it’s all about AA NW, which the away side sneak as Mike’s CP tactics do damage to the home side’s WP team.  League over?  Let’s see …

Oh yeah – more trading, and AA bid £1.3 million for AP’s rising star Simpson (who had in fact been sold to JG – but some wrangling saw him turn up at AA in the end).  I had always thought the club splashed out £1.7 mill on this man, so I’m actually quite pleased J.  The deal was expensive, no doubt -  but like Mike’s acquisition of CF Rowbottom, this would go down as one of the club’s best ever deals, and Simpson would go on to dominate all sorts of awards in the league for the next few seasons.

In another HUGE deal, CA sold star FB B. Berlinnin to NW with CM 10 O’Brien, for star AM Sheringham and FB 10 Lees.  Superb trade for Noshaki, this one!  Again, one that got away for the Alcies!  NW also made another shrewd move by capturing quality CM J. Cassidy from EU.  Mike had really worked the oracle and given his squad fresh impetus.

1.6175 million was moved around the teams – but when you look at the sheer quality of players traded (Simpson x2; Berlinnin, Sheringham, O’Brien, Lees, CF 10 Holmes, Cassidy, WH 9.5 24 Riquelme) it really was a huge trading week.

After IQ exited the cup to EU in week 5, more trading (getting bored yet)?  NW signed 2 more quality players in O. Ardiles from IQ and CM M. Draper from MR.  With commy players now being sold, this added up to another £2 million in sales.

Week 6, and check out the quality of NW’s new players:

and no Rowbottom in the mix there.  Hardly shabby, and far too good for MR, even with the away side playing a grudge. All hail the trading king.

Trading, and only 2 deals?  Pah!

Week 7 shows just how far the league had come in 6 seasons.  Check out these EMPs:

LU – 137.44

GU – 132.53

IQ – 141.44

NW – 141.26

AA – 158.85

Killer EMPs, all of them – and not one of the sides used a grudge or boost (no, not even AA (although the side’s WH tactics were helped by a stray ZD opposition tactic).

Just to show that NW were not finished with all that trading, week 8 saw Mike buy 4 player off Commy Peter:

NW $282,282 for 22 yo AM Nsl 8 Name: F. Liverani

NW $282,282 for 24 yo AM Nsl 9 Name: C. Doni

NW $202,202 for 21 yo WH Nsl 7.5 Name: K. Nolan

NW $252,252 for 23 yo WH Nsl 8.25 Name: S. Conceicao

Great trading material … as NW would later prove.

Week 9, and an indication of what can happen if a team plays the right tactic at the right time:

Note that LU actually put more NSL on the pitch than AA, and ZD is usually a high emping tactic. However, AA’s formation and tactic gave the home club all kind of emp bonuses, to see a huge disparity between the two sides.  This is a particular note to new managers – just because another side has a better NSL than yours, it does not mean they cannot be beaten.  Even if LU had 100 NSL on the pitch in this game, the home side would still have taken home the bacon.

By the end of week 9, 96 players had either joined the league or moved clubs, to a total cost of £15,135,351.

Week 10 sees one of the best games in SAEFL history – please check it out for yourself.  The rivalry between IQ and NW had been intense since IQ shocked Mike to win the cup the season before.  So it was not a surprise to see both sides grudging.

But surely IQ could not pull off another shock?  Actually no, they couldn’t.  But with crack keeper Wall in good form, they only lost by a single goal to a NW side emping 162 with a CP tactic (not as good for pure EMP as something like a ZD). Feel the quality oozing from every pore:

By this time, in the second division, EW, AP, PN and FI were making the running for the title.

The week also saw PN draft CM 20 7 Wictoria from the commy for 289k.  A great deal for PN, what would end up an even better deal for another club down the stretch.

For trading purposes, it’s also worth taking a look at my press in week 10.  It gave an in-depth look at the best trades through the seasons, and who were the biggest traders of the lot – plus a break down of all the weekly trading costs, from season 1 onwards.  Makes interesting reading:

And 1 week later, NW sign another 3 freaks … just for the hell of it!

Week 19, and GU get a spot of luck against the title defenders.  Conceding 7 changes to 1, they some how manage to sneak a 1-1 draw.  In division 2, AP, EW, PN, FI and NH were battling it out for the title, and the week saw EW play NH – and a huge win for the home team, which would have a major impact on the end of season table (2-0 to EW, for interests sake).

Week 24, and NW win the title.  A fluky draw for OC against them, and a tight win for AA against GU, meant the title was won by a mere point – but in actual fact, although both teams were head and shoulders above every other club in the league this season, Noshaki still towered over Alcohol A.

In division 2, AP and EW seal promotion, with FI slipping up at the last against EU with the away side pulling a clever CP trick against their ONE opponents.

Onto the cup final, and with NW defeating AA in the semi-final, surely NW would make up for last seasons defeat against IQ by beating LU and winning the league/cup double for the first time in SAEFL history … well actually … nah!  NW win the game 14-9, despite a good effort from Lisbon.

In the play-off picture, NH sneak past an unlucky FI 2-1 to jump back up to the top flight.

To show the relative dominance of NW and AA in season 6, take a look at the following stats, stolen from Nuno at LU J

Winners of the season, other than NW! were as follows:

Player of the season (and forward): Rowbottom; defender – Berlinnin, Midfielder – Hoddle, young player – Boateng; defence of the season – AA / EW; manager of the season – Simon at EW.

So, that was the season that marked HUGE trades, and in particular massive trading from NW and AA … what would season 7 bring?  Find out soon …

I think we are playing a very useless boost here... but, what the hell, why not to try? CA has the stronger team this season (at least in this first half of the tournament) and is the very favorite for the title. Despite our good results, I don't think we have the top 11 to go for the cup neither a good enough rotation to go for the league... But we can always be lucky. So best luck, guys!!!

InterQuartile Rangers

The crux of the matter is I'm getting no points.  Napoleon siad he would rather have a marshal who was lucky rather than good.  I guess I've demonstrated my complete lack of luck.  There were at least 2 other Div 1 games where the difference in EMP was the same or greater than what I had, and both games ended in draws.  OC had a whopping difference of over 12 points and still had tie.  I've become convinced that skill means nothing.

What's with all the red cards this season?

Another game, another disappointment.  I've already said that it doesn't matter what I do.  The only function is to monitor stamina so players don't get hurt.  Well, I need to find a way to earn more money since I think I'm having a net loss trying to pay all these guys.

Adirondak Renegades

Adirondak Press (AP): So, why didn’t you show up for the press conference last week?

Manager Fulmer (MF): I was out celebrating with the boys. We were all quite excited about advancing in the cup. It was very unexpected since we were in a group with powers AA and NW. Plus, we are near the bottom of the league so we needed something to celebrate. Not that we need an excuse to have a couple of beers.

AP: You sound like that manager, what’s his name, from Beers of the World in DESL.

MF: I do believe there are some similarities between us.

AP: You are finally getting results in the league, two wins in a row!!!

MF: Yea, two in a row. That makes 2 for the season. Pretty impressive, huh?

AP: Enjoy it while it lasts. What are your thoughts on last weeks match?

MF: I was very pleased. We have been bringing in defensive players and working hard on teaching our players to work together on defense. It paid off this week as we were able to play attacking tactics but still hold a very respectable opponent without a shot. AS is a strong defensive side and we were able to physically compete with them.

AP: How does newly acquired CB K Hickey ft into your plans?

MF: He is right in the heart of our plans. At age 24, he fits in well with the main part of our squad. He is also a person of strong determination and ethics, which we have focused on in building AR. Hickey will move into the starting line-up this week in a key match with NH.

MF: Anyone stand out?

MF: Strong defense is a team effort, but WH W Hell was strong on offense. His great finish was obviously key in a 1-0 victory. He also lead us with 3 goals in our last cup victory. It is good to see that his firey attitude is good for something besides collecting cards. At age 23, we hope he can continue his high level of play for some time to come.

Well last week we lost, which was not entirely unexpected but still disappointing.  We actually did not do all that bad considering they had played a boost against us.  We were only a point behind in NSL and less then ten points behind in EMP and only lost by four points but a loss is still a loss.  So now we are in seventh place in Division Two, which is not a great place to be for us.  We still are not far behind the teams ahead of us so we have a chance to move up.  It is still only the first half of the season so hopefully aging will be good to us and we will start winning.

This week we play GU, who are two places ahead of us in the standings.

Hopefully we will win and get the three points.  Depending on other teams, we could jump to 5th place if we win.

Stannington Historical

We are taking a philosophical approach right now to our matches. Our motto is "Short term pain for long term gain."

SH Manager Lear stated,"It sure is painful right now with absolutely horrific record. But I firmly believe that SH is going to gain in the long run due to the wealth of outstanding young talent that is abour ready to explode on the SAEFL scene within the next season or two. As I stated earlier on in this current season . it still might mean that SH has to spend a season in the 3rd Division, but I am not worried. We are keeping to our game plan."

Lear has decided to do a couple of things with this current SH team that he has done with some of his teams in the past.

One thing is that when ES was going through a truly bad stretch in the season, Lear took the team to the local library and made the players read books on how to win. Well, SH is on their way to the library to read books on how to win.

The other thing is that some of Lear's former teams went into seclusion to get refocussed on winning and to do team building activities and also for some heavy duty endurance training. Once SH players are finished with their library sessions, and when the next SAEFL Cup matches are being played, SH has booked a few days at a remote resort in the wilds of Mongolia where they are going to get back to basics. When asked about this trip to Mongolia, the outgoing CF A. Young known for some wild outbursts now and again stated," D...uh!

Blue Storm FC

Wayne United seems to be having a quiet season this year. These tactics have left the sports fans wondering what Coach / Manager Bryan Banfield has up his sleeve. Dispite the patch of bad luck they have had in the last few games, the crowds are still pouring in to see what Wayne United will do next.

Come see... I'm sure you will be pleasantly supprised.

Falcons

Falcons play bottom of the log Blue Storm so the coach has decided to give a few players a bit of a rest. We hope the plan doesn't backfire on us as we need the points to climb into a potential playoff spot.

Fanatics United

Reporter: One of the highest attended games in the season is about to start, first and second in the division are about to come head to head. How are you feeling Brian?

Manager: A bit nervous, you never know for sure how things are going to plan out, there is always the random factor. Our team has been waiting a long time to play TS and they are ready to get into this game or players.

Reporter: Do you except this to be a bloody game?

Manager: Yes, if we start to lose.

Reporter: Is this about pride?

Manager: My pride will be hurt a bit, but I don't think the team will take it well. There will be moaning, from the other team, and gnashing of teeth.

The Fanatics United is very “fanatical” about there sport and the club, and we put a lot of effort into the look, feel and spirit of the team, we mainly don’t want to lose to a person that does not. And the way we are going to “Deal with it” is by dealing with you…

Fantastic eleven

My team is finaly starting to perform but we are still rebuilding and hope to stand a change to play in the play off. If we have a good aging I feel sorry for the other teams. We will not rest we will be gunning for FU in the second half of the season. We will see what we do with that stone of his.

So the big day has come… TS has decided to go with something a little less conventional in the hopes that the time spent not being able to focus on SAEFL, will be made up by the change in strategy. QUITE risky, but its necessary!! Hope all have a good game. And i pray for the sorry fellah who paid for or traded to get CF Zell... :)
