DIVISION 1 GAMES

InterQuartile Rangers are a team that perform nice every week, but remain without points in spite of that too often. Having won only 1 out of 6 matches, IQ are a relegation candidate, being in the danger zone, something that you wouldn't expect when you look at the EMP they have week after week. So, of course, in a situation like this, you can only wait until their good performance finally pays off. Luckily for Terry, already this week was his lucky week. This weeks opponent was Jazz Greats, the nr. 4 team of the league, and so a pretty tough opponent. The match was very exciting. Both Terry and Bart fielded an almost equally strong team. Barts team would have been somewhat better, if it weren't for that red card for Mantorras. That made him miss 6.81 EMP, which would have probably been enough for the victory. However, that was not the only reason for JG's defeat. Because even in the current situation, IQ were given 32 chances, against 31 for JG. That difference is not that much, and when you consider that IQ was playing with a NSL 9 GK, and JG with a NSL 10 GK, JG still should have won this game. But they didn't. IQ's goalie simply had a magical day, and that finally resulted in another 3 points for IQ. Due to goal difference, it will probably not be enough yet to escape the relegation zone, but it sure brought IQ a lot closer to that escape. JG fail in their attempt to chase the top 3. Does this mean midtable for the Greats?

Without a doubt, the match of the week could be no other match than the clash between the numbers 1 and 2 in division 1. Catbel Athletic were 1 point ahead, so they could create a gap by beating FC Inferno, while on the other hand, FI could take the lead by beating CA. That promised a lot of excitement, and of course both Marco and Ivo realized the importance of this outcome too, as Marco played a boost and Ivo even played a GC. And that grudge turned out to be enough to secure the victory. (Believe me: when CA play their strongest team in a home game with a grudge, no team can beat them before midseason aging. Well, except for DL maybe, but they play in another division) Just look at the EMP: over 151, and if Ivo would have kept his nerve when he tried to copy and paste AS Damaseb, it even would have been higher! FI on the other side show that they have a top team, reaching almost 130 EMP in an away game, when dealing with an injury. That should and probably will be enough for a high position this season, but this week it wasn't enough to beat CA. CA are four points ahead now, and AA can walk away 3 points from FI too. Let's see what they have done this week.....

Excelsior Warren and Apocalypse are 2 teams that are very close in the league table, for already a long time. This season, so far, has been no different: EW have 7 points, and AP have 6. That is not enough yet for a position in the top half of the table, where we are used to seeing them, but then again, the top half of the table is only 1 win away. The only trouble is that in this match, only one team can win. (Of course Peter, I know that goes for every match, trust me.) So, (and especially if EW should win this), if this game does not end in a draw, we could witness a gap between these teams. Simon apparently was destined to be on the good side of the gap, as he played a grudge where Martin decided to leave things as they are. And that was just what made the difference. The Grudge was helpful enough to give EW the extra EMP they needed to secure a win, and that did it! With 14 goals against 7, EW add 3 points to their total, and jump up the table, only behind JG on goal difference. AP however, have as many points as IQ, and they have to wait for what OC have done this week, or they might end up in the relegation zone.

.....and here's the answer to the question of that previous match. Alcohol Anonymous did not win their game. However, they didn't loose it either. So, they climb from 3rd to 2nd place, with 1 point more than FI now, although the gap with CA increases to 3 points now, so we can state that CA is the big winner this week. For AA however, the draw was fair. Their match against Lisbon United was a tough one, and as far as I can remember, matches between LU and AA have always been tough, and close. Nuno and Nathan played an almost equally strong team, created almost the same EMP, created 5 chances each, and both managed to score 1 of those. The only thing that jumps out of it, is that AA played with a NSL 8.5 GK, while LU played with a NSL 10 GK. So, in case this match did deserve a winner after all, it should have been Nuno, but actually, I thing looking at all the stats, this draw is a fair result. (Although I can understand that Nuno has a somewhat different opinion)

Oaklake City and NoShaKi '98 are 2 of the 3 teams in the relegation zone, and although it is still early in the season, I think it is realistic to say that we have a true relegation battle here, or a sixpointer, if you prefer. In spite of the huge interests of this game, neither Keith nor Mike played a grudge, no, they did not even play a boost! However, since they both did not play any extra's, it only meant that this game was still in balance, as they both were almost equally strong, not just in NSL but also in EMP, and in fact they even created the same number of chances: 33. So, up till this point, it's the same story as the previous game. But that is where the comparison ends, as in this game, we also had 2 GK's with different NSL. In this game, the difference was much smaller (10 against 9.75), but the consequences were much bigger: OC scored 15, and NW only 11. So, OC escape the relegation zone (after we already witnessed AP lose their game), while NW's problems increase. Is Mike looking to rebuild in div 2, and then come back to div 1 with a lot of Championship dollars? You never, know. I mean, CA did not relegate on purpose, but the 1 year in div 2 has been very good for them, just look at where they are now. But still.....this is so unlike NW.....

Another Dutch clash this week. (Well, next season we will have Martijn in div 1, and the season after that Otto and Wouter will follow, and in 3 years I expect to have at least 2 dutch clashes every week! If only we can manage to keep Jeroen in div 1.....) Anyway: another dutch clash, in the match between Tottenford Heats and The Boelewieten. Both Mark and Jeroen are specialized in playing either a strong ZD or CP, so for both teams, it was puzzling whether they had more chances playing ZD or CP. Playing ZD would most likely reduce the chances of losing, but then again, it would increase the chance on a draw. Well, that problem could be solved if you play a boost, and Jeroen was the only one who wanted to spend it this week. And indeed this boost made TB too strong for TH, as it resulted in 2 smother shots, of which 1 was scored. The fact that TB also used their awarded penalty was merely for the statistics. The 3 points for TB make them climb to 4th place, with 13 points chasing the top 3 teams, and now only 2 points behind FI, and 3 points behind AA. And since next week we have FI-AA on the table, who knows what lies waiting for TB? On the other hand, Mark drops to the bottom half of the table with TH, but since the differences in the midtable are still small, Mark won't care too much I guess.
