DIVISION 2 GAMES

After a good start this season, Melchester Rovers have been dropping some places on the table, just above the relegation zone. Time to do something about it, was what Bruce must have thought, as in their game against Stannington Historical (who already are in the relegation zone), he played a boost in his home match, to increase MR’s chances on a victory. Well, that plus the red card for FB Hirsi-Ali was too much for Lens SH to cope with (it looks like nothing is spared Len this season), was indeed enough for a victory. MR create more than twice as many chances as SH, so the 7-5 result in the end made it look a lot more exciting than it actually was. MR climb away from the danger zone, while SH looks doomed to relegation

The clash between the numbers 3 and 4 of the table promised to be exciting. Since both Dead Scientists and The Jazz are already 6 points behind the leader of the table, the loser of this game could be out for title chances, at least for a while. However, both Tim and Stewart apparently decided to keep their boosts and grudges in the pocket, and played a clean game. The differences weren’t very big, but they were big enough to be decisive, and they were decisive in the home teams favour: 10-6. DS stay in the race for, well….at least an outsider for the title, while TJ is somewhat further behind now (unless DL might lose of course), but are still very much in the race for at least the playoffs.

Well well, it was not just div 1 that saw a clash between the numbers 1 and 2 on the table, as also England Under 21 and Druss Legends met this week. So I guess it’s safe to say that actually there were 2 matches of the week this week. Both Mike and Martijn wanted to win this one very much, and both managers played a grudge. That resulted in a great match, in wich both EU and DL showed to be outstanding teams this season, good enough for division 1 (look at those EMPs, I guess a lot of div 1 managers will be jealous!). But out of these 2 great teams, only one could be the best, and without a doubt, that team is DL. Martijn does this season what he didn’t do last season: beat the competition in these crucial matches. Now this has changed, it looks like DL is heading for the championship, as already before the season is halfway, he is way ahead of the competition.

The least surprising result this week was of course the GU result. Once again, it was impossible to break GU’s defense. This weeks candidate in the “who is able to score against GU?” competition was Kelly, with Point of Napier. But no matter how hard she tried, she had to end the match without having scored, like so many before here. Sure, PN is a great team, and as a result of that, Michael wasn’t able to score against PN either, so the match ends 0-0. Both GU and PN are teams that are good enough for at least the playoffs, so for both teams it’s a good thing that they did not lose this one, but actually, winning 1 point must feel like losing 2.

Newton Heath and Adirondak Renegades are 2 teams that I guess will be fighting over the last playoff spot, just like last year. That is why this match might turn out to be important, already in this stage of the competition. We saw AR, who are in the danger zone at present, perform ok last week, and it looks like Don is about to fight back and show what AR is capable of. On the other side also show that their team has improved compared to last season, and that they might be able to surpsrise this season. In this game, it was the grudge that Don played that made the difference. If it were the other way around, Robert would have won this game, but this week the 3 points are for AR, and that makes that AR jump to the midtable. The only bad thing is that the midtable goes until position 10 right now, so in the current situation, it looks like 1 midtable team will relegate.

Englehart Storm against African Selects is a match between 2 teams, whose results are a little disappointing this season. ES has been getting better and better in the last couple of seasons, with the playoff final as a high. But in spite of continuing that good line, they are still at the bottom half of the table so far. Although of course, Peter could change that in 2 weeks, with 2 victories. For Colin and AS, the situation is even worse. Last season, they were still in div 1, and now, the next season, already before midseason aging it looks like they are destined to play in div 3 this season. So for both managers, one thing was important this week: win this match! The differences weren’t very big, and since Colins defense was stronger than Peters attack, but not strong enough to be much better in general, the match ended as it started: 0-0. Sure, you can look at the bright side, and say that at least this match is not lost, and that this point won could be the first of the points needed to improve the situation. However, both ES and AS actually needed 3 points, to really do something about that, so I doubt it if either Peter or Colin will be really happy with this result
