A HISTORY OF SAEFL (Season 7) – EPIC BATTLES

Season 6 saw NW win the league with a equally as big a squad of monsters as in season 5.  AA had also strengthened through the season – so how would the relatively young guns fare against the old masters; and could any other side break into the top 2?  Lets take a gander …

Season 7

§   In the opening games, AA beat EW, with Sylfar (12.25), mills (10) and Simpson (12.5) looking in awesome form.

§   NW destroy LU 12-0 – although that was not surprising with the home team fielding 110 NSL worth of talent including Berlinnin (12), Todi (12.5) and Rowbottom (12.5).

§   JG and GU draw 0-0 – not a shock result given defences including Nick (JG – 10) and McGoo (GU – 10.5).

§   NH find out what re-joining the elite is like with a 10-7 loss to OC.  Every Oaklake player has 10 NSL to his name – a rate occurrence; NH field a top WH in Mars (10)

§   IQ and AP draw 0-0.  G. Hoddle was at his majestic best (12.5) for the home side; AP used a great Striker in Soweto (11.5)

§   In a slight shock, TH beat CA 1-0.  FB Noah (10) and CF King (11) star for TH; MF Thornley (11) does the business for Catbel

In division 2:

§   FI and AS draw 0-0 – AM Collins (10) and FB R. Carlos (10) put in performances for their respective sides

§    DL 14 – 17 PN: Dakar (10) looks the bizz for the Legends; CM Wictoria (9.5) puts in a smooth game for the away side

§   Stalemate between AR and SH.  DS Rincewind (AR – 10) and DM C. Mills (9) ensure a 0-0

§   Also 0-0 between ES and TB.  FB Blass (8.75) and FB Horne (10) look gooduns

§   A great game between EU and TJ ends 12-12.  WH Rilquelme (10) and AS Thundercats 10) are on the scoresheet

§   MR 17 – 9 DS as the home side look to bounce back from relegation.  CF’s J. Euell (12) and Zahovic (12.5) show why the home side have a chance of moving on up; DS have their own star in CF Stewart (12)

Trade wise – nothing happened in week 1!

Week 2, and the two sides likely to slug it out for promotion show why.  NW rest half their players, still put 105 NSL on the pitch, and still EMP c17 despite CA playing OFF to Noshaki’s WP.

AA play an absolutely superb defensive line up as they crush TH 2-0 : GK P. Hutton 9.5 10.77 Saves 0, DS G. Catenaccio ^ 10 14.65, DS M. Sammer 9.75 14.62, DS O. Sylfar ^^ 13.75 21.08, CB D. Mills 10 15.66, FB U. Sam ^ 10.5 16.26, FB B. Simpson * 12.5 21.33

No trades in week 2.

HUGE HUGE HUGE shock in the cup as PN beat NW 2-0.  Perhaps Mike thought Port of Napier would rest up.  Perhaps he thought NW would win whatever.  Perhaps he thought that playing an illegal formation wouldn’t have an impact.  It did.  What would they do in the 2nd leg.  Find out soon …

AA are the biggest traders in week 3.  They get rid of a number of players but, importantly for the future, bring in 9.5 22 CM Wictoria from PN for 1 8 20 GK and cash.  It would prove a shrewd move.

From the commy list, TJ pick up AS 6.5 20  R.Kirk for 125k.  Not a bad move.

Sometimes grudges can make the difference between 3 points and 1.  And in week 4, AP show just how to use a +10%er.  Against a defensive EW, the game would have ended up 120 EMP a piece, 0 shots a piece and 1 point a piece.  The grudge gave AP 12 EMP more, 2 shots, and, most importantly, 1 goal.

Week 4 also saw … hold on … no trades again?!

Cup 2nd legs took place in week 5.  Shocks see LU lose out to NH, TB beat IQ, TH beat CA, and EU lose out to a SA side, plus …

PN beat NW after a penalty shoot out! – take a look for yourself:

167 (yes, 167) EMP v 158.  AA were probably lucky to get away with 0 shots against them – but this game has to rank as one of the best ever 0-0s in the history of SAEFL.

Week 11 sees AA score 27 and NW score 22.  At least CA managed to score 5 against the Alcies – no one had managed a single goal that season against the Pubmen until that point.

In division 2, FI seem to be walking away with the league, and a 2-0 win against EU keeps their unbeaten start to the season intact.

On to week 13, and ageing time – and although NW look a little weaker, they still look very strong, and thump JG 7-0.  By tis stage, DS McGooJr is a 10 NSL player and threatening to usurp his father as the best DS ever (well, maybe not quite).  TJ’s AS Thundercats is now a 10.25 freak (one of about 3 AS I would regret selling in no time at all!).  CM Neitzche is also a freak at 10.5 and looking very much the part at SH – but the other players in the team cannot quite match his quality.

Week 13 and 14 – JG pick up a 12.5 S from their own ranks, and sign 11.5 MF Thornley and AS 11 McPhysto in quick succession.  Are they turning into the new Noshaki?

No wonder I’ve never really liked DS – it must be the shock 2-0 cup defeat they inflicted on my club in week 15.  Slap on my wrist for not selecting a captain!

Week 17, and NW nearly come unstuck against GU.  One shot, one goal – take a bow, Cassidy.  In league 2, TB and FI are having great runs, and look as though they will battle it out for the title with MR, who nearly slip up against SH with an illegal formation.

Week 18 sees AA create 4 chances against DS, but score only 1 – meaning that the top two sides in the top division went out of the cup before the semi-final stage in season 7.  JG, TH and OC also advance to make it a compelling last 4.

In the league, and NW and AA have still only drawn 1 game each – against each other.  Perhaps someone was getting a little jealous when writing the report for AA 2 – 0 NH:

“AA isn't going to let their chance at the title slip as well it seems. Allthough i'm sure GK Wilcox gave them a bit of a scare... NH is in big trouble, plain and simple. I'm not saying their situation is hopeless but it is close to it. AA is a solid team that one could admire if their tactics weren't so utterly boring....Hi Nath ! Guess who :-)”

This changes in week 18 when CA some how sneak a 12-12 draw with AA (who had nearly twice the shots – 39 to 21).  This hands the advantage to NW, who are still eeking out wins.

The following 2 weeks see AA sneak very narrow wins, while NW comfortably win both games – so it heads for the shoot-out of AA v NW, with the former needing to win to try and claim the title.

Mind you, division 2 had its own mighty battle in week 21, when MR and AS battled it out for glory.  Both grudge, but the home side have that little more quality with Zahovic and Euell up front and win 25-20.  Neither of the sides can match FI though, who are still unbeaten and strolling to a league title.

And so to the mother of all games – AA v NW.  This game will always go down as, in real life, Arsenal v Man U goes down in football (and the wrong side usually wins that one!).  This one was as tight as ever.  Both sides played defensively – not suprising as TC was AA’s best tactic at the time, and NW only needed a draw to take real command of the season with a 2 point gap and only two games to play.

So, let’s take a look at the outcome:

§         First thing to look out for is the lock-out.  24,514!!!!!  That must be some sort of record, and comes from both sides not having lost in the league for so long.

§         The second thing to note is the performance – 160 EMP = quality – and both sides got there with grudges.

§         Then look at the sending off of Wictoria (who has always been quality, but has a short-fuse).  Had he stayed on the pitch, AA might have yielded a shot.

§         Then take a look at the individual performances – two AA players emped over 20 (the legendary Sylfar and Simpson), while no NW outfield player emped under 13, and all emped over 14!  Other than Wictoria, Dada emped under 13 and all other AA players netted over 15 in the emp stakes!!!

§         The last thing to note is the score: 0-0 (although NW could have won after a blatant dive from Salas resulted in a pen that Rowbottom failed to put away).  Queue the celebrations for NW?  Let’s see …

Not to be outdone, AP emp 153 against JG.  Not bad …

In division 2, TB beat MR to keep up the pressure on AS for the an automatic promotion spot.  FI are still strolling J

Injuries are common place at the end of the season, with managers playing their best players as hard as they dare.  Week 23 saw 14 injuries, with AA picking up 3 on their own – to no less than Sylfar and Simpson, as well as keeper Java.  Ouch!

So on to week 24, and with both NW and AA winning the previous week, AA need their title rivals to slip up.  AA beat EW 2-0 … so … so … so …

So OUCH!  The club draw only their third game of the season with a 0-0 draw against LU.  But that’s not the end of it – while NW created 0 chances, their hosts spurned two opportunities.  Cafu and Draper had to hold their shame, and NW had beaten AA on goal difference.  The tightest battle ever in SAEFL had ended with Noshaki victorious.

In division 2, FI stroll J  and win the title with a monumental points total.  MR go up with them, leaving others to battle it out in the play offs.  By now I was a total wreck and was looking forward to a slightly less cut-throat season in season 8!

Week 25, and the curtain draws on another season with the cup final and play-offs.  The battle for division 1 status sees AS, EU, TB and DS draw swords.  In really tight games, AS beat EU 1-0 with the help of a penalty, and TB squeak past DS 5-3.

And so to the final.  I have not got enough energy to tell the story of this titanic battle so take a look for yourself:

AS win after RB miss their 10th penalty … boy oh boy!

The cup sees JG play TH.  I suppose not all cup finals can go down to the wire, and this one didn’t. JG picked the right tactic on the day in ZD v CP, and Totts saw two players red-carded in the first half to take their legs away, and give Jazz a 6-0 win.

Season awards, and the player of the season for the first time ever is NOT a striker.  B. Simpson takes the plaudits, emping over 400 in a very classy season.  Player2 is the midfielder of the year (he seemed to play every game for DS given his best performance was only 15.3!), and M. Stewart, the man who rose from obscurity to be a freak, took the forwards award for DS as well.

I suppose it goes to show you need more than 2 players to make a team (although DS had a good term, beating AA in the cup and making the div 2 play offs)

AA and FI had the meanest defences, and no manager of the year was picked (surely between NW, AA and FI J).

So, the season that saw a titanic battle for the title (and me pulling any hair I had left out) was over.  Great stuff – with the kind of managerial action that makes SAEFL so special.

What would transpire in season 8?  Hmmm … stay tuned.

Excelsior Warren

From the Excelsior Herald...

Cup Shocker. Excelsior were stunned earlier this week by third division Deo Volente. Many of the faithful were left wondering whether this team comprising mostly ex-popes had an unseen hand shielding their goal. It remains to be seen whewther the unfortunate Excelsior keeper Marmont will be ex-communicated after his 'mare between the sticks. Was this luck or was it divine intervention? Only the away leg will tell, but there must be more than a few of the faithful asking their god for a more even handed approach in a couple of weeks.

F.C Inferno

I remember the old times when SM was very frequently played! Instead of the current 4:3 ratio, the tactic would divide opponents shots by 2 and own shots by 3. Very powerful against the perennial high number of WP teams! Now things are different, and much probably this won't take us anywhere. But it's a bet! Let's see!

InterQuartile Rangers

I didn't underestimate anyone.  There is no skill.  It's all luck.  Even without the card and injury I would have had a 3 point advantage in EMP.  The keepers differed in EMP by 0.02!  Why was the game close?  His save rate was 13% more than mine.

Luck again in the league game.  In this case the card was pivotal.  At least he would have had a higher EMP.  Although, higher EMP doesn't always corelate to determining the higher scoring team.

There are some bright spots.  In the league game 3 players were well over 50% in shooting, Albert (4 of 5), Hamm (2 of 3), and Gerard (5 of 8).  Things weren't as bright in the cup game.  Gerard was again strong with 4 of 6, but Hamm was a dissappointing 2 goals on 9 shots!

The Boelewieten

Boelewieten very in Sight

Dilemma, dilemma in this week. The cupmatch against FI was with the second team, only FB Tyler was leading the defence, the other players fairly new on the pitch and they performed very well. Their mission was to keep the gap between FI and TB as small as possible and with the return homematch to come i think TB has a good chance to go to the last 8 of the cup.

And there is the dilemma again, with all first 11 on the bench i could gain 2 SP for every player this week, but that also means facing CA with the same second team. Giving the league away? Is that the consequence? Or giving a second spot away in the league, buy playing a grudge against CA, having a lot of players on 26 SP or lower and losing next games against AA, FI, FI again, and so out of the first half of the table, and laughed at by FI and AA together. Between writing this press and sending the order to our commish I will alter the order probably 10 times, but that is the guy i am, playing this game on emotion and also trading on emotion.

And that virus, the tradingvirus has gone skyhigh since Nathan, Mike and Don send their transferlists, wishes into the league. Bought myself a striker yesterdayevening, thinking about trading before the trading, but also looking at the TB trading list this season, and maybe, maybe, i must focus on other things, maybe maybe i must wait after season aging, but also those temping offers. Just hope that the thrird division transferlist keeps getting 10 players every week so it will be interesting for those third div teams to sell players for cash, and thats what we have cash, let those coins roll!!

Oh yes, why the boost? Seems this is a sort of Dutch tradition!

Adirondak Renegades

Press Conference held Monday March20, prior to Cup match

Adirondak Press (AP): Congratulations on another win. AR are on a roll.

Manager Fulmer (MF) Thanks. The young guys are starting to figure things out. I can see some chemistry developing.

AP: You have a tough week coming up.

MF: Definitely. A cup match at Kicker Field followed by a surreal visit to Toon City. A good chance for our kids to do some growing.

AP: Are you pleased with drawing AK in the cup?

MF: I am expecting a very tough match this week. AK have struggled to get results in league matches, but they showed their toughness in advancing out of the first round of the cup. I'm sure they will be intense in defending their home turf this week.

AP: AR has moved up the table nicely.

MF: We have moved up to the last playoff spot. We are in a 4 way tie for that spot, but hey, at least we are no longer on the bottom. Our remaining matches in the first half are TJ, PN, GU and DS. That streak should knock us back down the table. Then we can have some fun moving back up.

AP: How are things on the trade front?

MF: Talk, talk, talk. All talk and no action. Its like being married.

AP: Well, on that note we need to end this press conference and unplug the phones before the irate calls start coming.

MF: And the calls congratulating me.

Press Conference held after Cup Match

AP: Congratulations on yet another victory. It seems all I have been doing lately is congratulating you!

MF: Hopefully you have it all out of your system because the losses are coming, soon…

AP: A 5 goal victory in an away match in the first cup leg is a great start. To what do you attribute AR success.

MF: To begin with, Hird had a great match in goal. We had 3 more shots that AK, but had 5 more goals. Hird saved 13 of 17 chances, an awesome performance.

AP: WH W. Hell had a strong match, scoring four of ARs nine goals on only 6 chances.

MF: You know, its kinda funny. I almost didn't play him. Hell is a strong young player, but sometimes his emotions get the better of him. I wasn't sure he could funnel his emotions in a positive direction in an important match like this. As I was making out the line-up, I changed my mind and decided what the hell, why not play him and see how he does. I glad I went with my gut feeling and didn't use my brain.

AP: Your brain must be well rested, because it doesn't look like you use it when you make trades either.

MF: Funny…You need a dose of Marco's Inferno Fire. Besides, I have only made one trade in the last month. I think that shows pretty good self control.

AP: Have you been talking about trades?

MF: Yea, but that is Nathan's fault. Every time I say I'm done trading Nathan somehow gets me interested again :. I even had someone the other day tell me to quit spreading the trading virus.

AP: I think it is now time to stop this press conference virus.

African Selection

Woah baby, the Englehart Storm join the elite club by being one of two teams that give up two points to the Selects. Not since the first game of the season has that unlikely event happened. At this rate, the Selects look to finish with about 4 points on the season.

Since apparently I am a Librarian, we had better get back to the books. Hopefully we will have some luck against Melchester and they will also join the exclusive club of Select point givers!

How cold are the winters in SA? Anyone know?

We where very happy with the result last week. EU is a very powerful team and it was a good thing we grudged them. The result could have been copmpletely differently if we hadn't.

So now we are in sixth place in Division Two.  There are a lot of teams close to us in the standings so we really need to start winning.  Coming into the season, we were considered a favorite for promotion, and even a contender for the title.  Obviously, our team did not turn out to be that great this year but hopefully, we will still make the playoffs.  As of now, there are several teams very close together in the playoff picture.

DS is ahead of us so it would move us up some if we win.  Hopefully we will but with the way it is going this season, who knows.

"Why do I feel like we are like lambs being led to the slaughter with this week's match against DL?"

We have the right tactic to play against DL but our Kiddie Corps just doesn't have the horses to be able to carry things out.

But we are going with a trap anyways because DL likes the wide open attack. Maybe SH can get lucky this week.

Aging can't come too soon for us. Most SAEFL people know that we are simply loaded with young talent and they are taking advantage of it. All I can say is that it is going to be a different story in the 2nd half of this season.

The Jazz

The Toons losted in the midweek cup game Against No Shaki WC98, the game was a very tight affair with tha away side playing a

strong defence. The game was a midfield battle with TJ not be able to get a shoot on goal and NW got two shoots on goal and the

NW Striker with a shoot on target  beat the keeper, the 2nd leg we be a hard game again and will  we be good enough to break down the home teams defence.

In the league TJ faced an away game against DS and lost another game in the league the manger was not to please with the result, and hopes to get back to winning ways this week with a home game against much improving side  AR who are on a winning run

in the league of 3 games. AR also had a midweek cup game which they overcome 3rd div team AK away from home.

DIVISION 3

Adelaide Kickers

Aros VSK

Last week DV was defeated by clever use of the smoother rule. This week AV face FU who is undefeated. After a tough cup-game AV are getting rather fatigued. But this is just what AV traded for earlier in the season. Now its time for the rotation to get the results needed. Just to help things AV will use a grudge this week.

Blue Storm FC

Wayne United is on a bit of a high this week after a great win in their last match. Coach and Manager, Bryan Banfield has made few if any changes to the teams for this week. When asked why Bryan said that he was looking to see how the team works together two weeks in a row.

Next 3 games are going to be dam azz hard! Will be interesting to watch! :)

Falcons

Last weeks sending off of two players cost Falcons the game and the Falcons return home this week looking for a solid victory.

Report: Are you happy with the results from last weeks game?

Manager: Yes, but we could have done more damage to E. Vedder , we only had P. oFeele sent off. Did you see Vedder's EMP hahahaha (that's what you call cutting off the knees).

Report: I see that the roster this week does not have the top players in, why?

Manager: Yes, I know AV thinks that are going to do what no one else has done yet, but playing a cup game this week and running some of his players down, I don't think he is going to be at "full strength", and if he does field a "full strength" team I think there will be injuries and these will not be done by me. Also I need to rest for the next two weeks...

Report: Do you watch all the other games or just your division?

Manager: I try to watch as many as possible, but there are some restrictions at the moment and I am only able to watch division 3, when these restrictions are lifted, I will continue to watch almost all games.

Travis, hard luck for last week, but a good game, thanx.

Good luck to Christer today, and let us have fun.
