DIVISION 1 GAMES

With one eye on the table, you would not expect that NoShaKi WC ’98 would be such an exciting match. NW is the number last on the table, while JG is the number 5, trying to stay pursue the top 3 teams. However, this week showed that NW-JG will probably be one of the most exciting matches of all, this week. Both Mike and Bart played a strong team, both between 97.50 and 100 NSL, and when Bart played the usual WP (which of course was according to all expectations), Mike countered that with CP. Both teams EMPed just below 130, and in fact the difference was not more than 0.12! As a result of that, both teams were given just as many chances: 38 each. Now, when I tell you that NW had a 9.25 GK in the goal, and JG a NSL 10 GK, you’d expect that that would be what decided this match. And indeed, it was the GK’s who decided this one, but not in the way you’d expect. It was the GK from NW who had the best performance, and in spite of 0.75 NSL less, he saved 1 shot more, which led to the 16-15 victory for NW. NW could really use those 3 points, in their effort to get out of the relegation zone. Sure, they are still at the bottom of the table, but at least the difference is now small enough that things can be turned around in 1 week. For JG, this defeat will probably mean that for now, they have to forget about thinking about a top 3 position for a while.

Apocalypse and InterQuartile Rangers are the numbers 10 and 11 of the league table; in other words: this is a clash between 2 teams in the relegation zone. Since the difference between the numbers 7 and 11 is only 2 points, it meant that if this match would have a winner, that team would almost be sure of getting out of the danger zone. Both Martin and Terry played a strong team, AP had more NSL on the pitch, but Terry’s ONE was so effective that their was hardly any difference in EMP, not even 1. That resulted in 37 chances each, but unlike the previous match, this one WAS decided by the better GK. AP had a NSL 10 GK, against “only”9.5 for IQ. Not a huge difference you’d think, but it turned out to be enough for a 8 goal difference: 20-12. AP win three very important points, where IQ will be disappointed I guess, because if you want to stay in, you really have to win the matches against the competition, when it comes to relegation. But on the other hand….in spite of the possible importance of the outcome of this match, neither Martin nor Terry played a boost or grudge, so I guess they did not regard this match that important after all.

After their start of the season wasn’t that good, Oaklake City have been doing a little better, and have started climbing the table. After last weeks game, they were nr. 7 on the table, only 2 points behind the number 6, Excelsior Warren. Another victory could bring Keith and his OC even before EW. However, Keith must have known that that would be a hard thing to achieve, as EW needed a win if they wanted to stay in the trail of the top 3 teams. In an effort to perform even better, Keith played his best team plus a boost. Well, that did it. In fact, maybe he did not need the boost after all, as Simon apparantly wanted to use this match to rest some players, after the EW cup adventure. The difference in EMP was more than 15 in OC’s favour, and that showed in the number of chances: 27 against 14. And that, in the end, resulted in a 13-9 victory for OC that was fair. OC now overtake EW on the table, but the big picture doesn’t change that much, as both EW and OC remain solid midtable teams.

The clash between the numbers 2 and 3 of division 1, FC Inferno and Alcohol Anonymous, was predicted to be the match of the season. Marco lost the clash against CA last week, and won the cup match against TB earlier this week. This game against AA is the third very tough match in a row, and apparantly this last match was a bit too much for FI. Not only was Marco not able to play his strongest team, but he also suffered from a red card, for DS Salmon. Since Nathan did play a strong team, and all his players kept their nerves, AA was much stronger. (I believe that also had to do with the fact that Nathan played CP, which is one of AA’s most powerful tactics, while FI played SM, which is actually meant to reduce instead of prevent damage.) AA had 14 chances, against 4 for FI, and so the 6-1 win for AA was inevitable. The gap between FI and AA already was 1 point, and that gap increases to 4 points now. Will the top 3 become a top 2, or is it too soon to jump to that kind of concusions? We’ll see next week….

Tottenford Heats and Lisbon United are teams that have been in the top 3 in the last couple of seasons. This season, however, we can find them on positions 8 and 9 on the table, a little disappointing you’d say. In their match against each other, 1 team can do something about that, and climb towards the top of the midtable. Mark played a solid CP for TH, EMPing almost a 130. Nuno tried to defend that, hoping that he would win a point out of this (as a victory would probably have been too much to ask), but his ZD was simply not strong enough to stop TH. The difference in NSL was already almost 5 at the beginning of this game, the difference in EMP was more than 10 eventually, and even though that resulted in “only” 2 chances, since CM Cahill scored one of those, it was enough for a small but fair victory: 1-0. TH climb towards a more stable midtable position, and Mark might find that comfortable, as after the victories for AP and NW this week, the relegation line comes closer and closer, and in fact, with this loss, we see that LU has fallen below that line, so it’s time for Nuno to do something about that.

The match between the numbers 4 and 1 on the table, The Boelewieten and Catbel Athletic, promised to be an exciting game. Would TB challenge CA’s title aspirations? Would CA stop the rise of TB on the table? But the reality was that the game was boring, and the result after 90 minutes showed that: 0-0. After the cup match earlier this week, and the clash with AA next week, Jeroen must have thought to play rather safe, with a ZD team that was not his best (not by far!) but still very solid, and good enough to hope for a point. On the other side, Ivo played a strong team, but instead of the usual CP, he apparantly was afraid that Jeroen would try to pull a stunt. If TB would have played a grudge, and if that grudge would have done the job and TB would have beaten CA, then TB would have jumped into the top 3, and the differences wouldn’t have been that big. So, that explains the ZD for CA. That ZD did what Ivo must have seen as priority nr. 1: not to lose this game. That makes sense, as I think an away game against TB can be one of the toughest matches this season. However, the almost 140 EMP for CA was much stronger than the performance of TB. That resulted in 2 smother shots for CA, and if one of those was scored, noone could have complained about the victory (although Jeroen probably would have), as it would have been no more than fair. But that’s the risk of playing ZD: you can be a lot stronger, but that is only expressed in a little number of goals, and you don’t always score those chances. Still, the 1 point for CA makes that they are still 1 point ahead of AA, leading the table in div 1, while TB lose 2 points as well, but on the other hand they also win a point, which makes that they come 1 point closer towards FI.
