A HISTORY OF SAEFL (Season 8) – DEFENCE THE BEST FORM OF OFFENSE FOR CHAMPS

Season 7 saw NW win the league for the third season on the trot on goal difference from AA, who finished 2nd for the 6th season out of 7 (the other year they won the title).

So, with NW still boasting a monster squad full of talent, and with AA hot on their heels and JG building nicely, who would come out on top in Season 8?

Find out the result at the bottom of the press.

Week one started with more of a bang than a whimper when NW played AA in an immediate battle between the two dominant forces in SAEFL.

Of the two sides, AA looked stronger than ever, fielding 108.5 NSL.  NW seemed to have taken a backward step, despite fielding over 100 NSL.  In the end, the Alcies would have been the more disappointed, beating their guests by 16 EMP and creating 3 chances – but taking none of them.

JG had been touted around the league as a possible title challenger to AA and NW – and they started in dominating form as they confidently dispatched OC 10-5.

Of the promoted sides, FI drew, with MR and AS getting 0 points.  A wake-up call to these teams that Division 1 is no tea party.

Of the division 2 sides, only EU – so close to netting promotion the season before – really stood out.

Right – let’s get to it.  Player improvement time.  And this one would prove more than a pain for some managers than for others (more on why later)

AP – N. Hoffs (W) 12

JG – A. McPhysto (AS) 11.5

JG – A. Boateng (AM) 11

JG – B. Thornley (MF) 12

AA – B. Simpson (FB) 12.5

AA – B. Wictoria (CM) 10

NW – A. Nesta (CB) 10.75

LU – C. Cafu (FB) 12

GU – S. Nevland (DS) 10.75

TH – M. Lockwood (FB) 10.5

SH - F. Neitzche (CM) 11

Week 2, and the return of World Cup football (and am I looking forward to WC 2006 and a victorious England – right, Peter? J).

As with real life, some teams (like England), are better than others (like Holland).  Take a look at the former’s side as reference:

GK A. Manchester 10, DS J. Herrick 10, DS S. Nevland 10.75, CB H. Swift 10, CB M. Gaulin 10, FB C. Cafu 12, FB B. Simpson * 12.5, DM F. Frodo 10, WH C. GusJr 11, AM G. Fossman 10, CF D. Suker # 10

What a side.  Any manager would have given his right eye at that time for a defence like that.  And, to put the icing on a sweet, sweet cake, the England team even had a player called Fossman (even if the new manager that added an initial got that bit wrong J).

Week 2, and AA get back to winning ways.  No winning 2nd game for NW though, as they are held by a strong JG outfit that come out all guns blazing against Noshaki and actually out-perform the home team.

Week 3 sees the cup, and after a great start to the season, JG come down to a bump with a narrow defeat to the now 2nd division IQ.

Week 4, and both NW and JG draw again, leaving AA to take up top spot in the league with a 5-0 win against GU (you may start to see a picture emerging soon).

In division 2, for many years, SH were seen as the perennial wooden-spoon team.  Not in Season 8 however, as Week 4 saw Historicals pick up their third straight win – and one player, in a CP tactic, seemed particularly at home: CM F. Neitzche * 11 18.75.

Week 4 also sees AA deal with JG.  Now some teams have their trading nemesis.  For AA, that seems to be all teams L - but this trade has particular significance, which will be highlighted later.

JG sends AA

MF Thornley 28 12

FB Skilgannon 19 6.5

S Avery 24 9

AA sends JG

DM Jack 24 9 (just to clarify, this player was stationary from the season before).

In the cup 2nd legs, the tie of the round sees IQ defending a 1 goal lead against the mighty JG. Jazz pull it back to 1-1 on aggregate, but go out on penalties with only 3 pens from 9 being scored in the contest (proving that it’s not as easy as many people think!)

Week 6 and AA win 1-0.  “One nil, to the Alcie boys” goes as well as “One nil to the Arse-naaal!” don’t you think (who should be congratulated for a cracking win over Juve tonight).

However, the title reign of NW is surely over after a narrow 1-0 defeat at home at the hands of LU, who also know how to throw a defensive party.  Their 3 titles back to back will surely take some beating in such a competitive league.  Well done to Mike – he is one of the hardest working managers and deserves all the success he gets J.   Week 7, and AA let in a goal! … but manage to score more than their customary 1 to steal the game.

Obviously NH didn’t like money at this point.  320k in fines … hmmm …

Week 8 and the fastest two yellows in SAEFL history.  Take a bow, MF C. Jones of DS.  He may have been a freak (11 NSL at this point), but getting a booking and then another in 2 minutes against TB is something even more freaky.  For the record, the Scientists still won 11-9.

Week 9 sees AA play something other than a defensive tactic (WP to be specific), but CA do not have enough in the NSL bank and the Alcies run out 4-0 winners.

The other interesting game of the week sees a Juve of a side (if you watched tonight’s game) in TJ playing an Arsenal of a side (well, not quite) in AR.  The Jazz had two men dismissed, on 79 and 90 mins, while the Renegades saw two men injured.  Still, like their Juve opponents, the red cards cost dear, and Adinorak ran out 2-0 winners.

The game is all about opinions, and in Week 9, AR aired his on trading that week.  His thoughts on the trade between NW and DS is worth reading:

“NW sends DS 30 yo CF Nsl 9 Rowbottom

DS sends NW 200k.

I think that 200k is a lotta money for a 30yo, especially if his nsl is only  9, so this gets a : ( for DS.”

Well, for a normal CF I might agree, but for a 5 5 5 capt legend, 200k is worth it just for the press you can get out of Rowy ;)

Week 10, and NW are on a march after their early season problems.  A NMR by MR (ooh, that’d be hard to say) sees Noshaki Net (ooh again) a 25-0 win.  Not bad for the old goal difference!

The following week sees AA ship 7 in the cup! (don’t panic AA fans – they score 23).  But the goal leaking led to the following comments by Peter, which summed up just how good Simo, Slyfar and co. were for the Alcies at this time:

“You can't take one thing away from EU: scoring seven times against AA with Simpson in the team, is something that Michael, Bart and Christer dream about!!”

Sometimes the silly mistakes in SAEFL are vital.  And I know that Bart would be man enough to hold his hands up when this: -4% emp formation error cost JG all three points (well, maybe) against JG, as they slipped further behind the Alcies in the title race – who beat LU 1-0 despite the home side netting 146 EMP with a BC (they didn’t even register a shot).

TB, EW, SH and EU are battling it out for top spot at this stage in the season, with none of the sides pulling away.

Week 12 sees me holding my hands up, as AA make a formation error, costing them a couple of goals (as the Alcies ship 4) but score 12 against AP.

Week 13 sees the title race wide open again in Division 1, as JG put up a monster performance against AA.

JG more than hold their own once again, and the battle for the top is on.  Another interesting point is that Slyfar and Simo slip back from 12.5 to 11.75 and 12.25 respectively.  Worrying times indeed for the Alcies.

On to ageing, and the following players made an impression:

AA – B. Thornley (MF) 12.5

JG – A. McPhysto (AS) 12

JG – M. Standing (DM) 12.5

JG – W. Jack (DM) 10

JG – A. Boateng (AM) 11.75

AP – B. Peeters (CF) 10

SH – F. Neitzche (CM) 11.5

DL – K. Ontebonker (FB) 10  - Just ‘cause it’s a great name J

DS – J. Young (CM) 12

Oh, and a trade of note.  Just as JG are in with a shot at the title, they go and sell their star AS McPhysto to CA.

Week 16. and the title picture shifts again as GU hold JG to a 0-0 draw while AA win 5-0.

In the 2nd Division, it’s really tight.  Two great games see DL beat the then top of the table EU to move within two points of their opponents at the top of the league.  This allows TB to sneak in with a 1-0 win at SH and therefore move top by a point, much to the despair of England.

By this point, players are getting tired and making mistakes.  The week saw 10 injuries and 8 sending offs!

Week 17, and AA win 5-0.  JG only manage a draw with TH and all of the sudden the gap is 5 points.  Mind you, other managers are not writing Jazz off:

“Can JG still make a run for the title?  5 points is now the gap, but they still have a better GD than AA and both sides have interesting run-ins.  It's not over till it's over, and I'll still put a sneaky wager on JG” (Peter: Only Ivo could have written this @;-))

Week 8 – JG win 1-0 and AA draw 0-0 so it’s back to a 3 point gap and all to play for with the aforementioned better JG goal difference.  In the 2nd Division, it’s still 1 from 4, with EU leading the pack after ES NMR.

Boy oh boy – by this stage things are getting really twitchy in the AA-JG camps, and fights are breaking out about which manager is uglier (NF wins hands down, as he looks like a donkey, apparently).

The big game of the week sees AA facing NW and TH in the cup and league respectively.  With players tiring, Nath has to make tactical decisions – and where brains are involved, he usually gets it wrong.

The club is beaten 1-0 by NW in the cup.  In the league, TH create three chances, but score 0, and AA steal it with a Avery penalty.  Are the gods with the Alcies?

Maybe not, as JG sneak a 15-13 win against

Division 2 teams are also sweating, and EW, on the brink of the 1st Division footy, get held against bottom team TJ 0-0!  DL then lose to SH to reduce their chances of an automatic spot.  TB deliver, winning 5-0 and joined EW in 2nd spot.  EU net 4 against AR and take the lead in the division to 3 points.  1 foot in the first division?  Let’s see …

Week 21, and JG and AA both net victories by 1 goal.  It’s still so so tight, and fingernails and toenails (well, just mine) are being bitten to the quick.  OC and MR are relegated this week.

In Div 2, EU and EW win.  DL are charging late and net 3 points, but TB lose, as the bunnies and u21 cement their 1st Division credentials.

“DIVISION 1 PRESS

Team : AA

Peter – After one week of press The Pressman disappears again “

Blimmin cheek from Peter!  He should try holding down a decent job and writing press at the same time … hold on – who’s that saying I don’t hold down a decent job!

Week 23 sees NW and TH advance to the final of the cup.  It also sees a HUGE week in the league.  AA draw 1-1 with MR as Dada sees red.  Surely a chance for JG to cut the gap to 1 point?  No, as it happens.  Bento sees red for Jazz and they only manage a 1-1 draw with FI.  So the Alcies have a 1 point gap at the top and it’s their title to lose.

The week also sees EU and EW win, and gain promotion to the top flight.  Quality jobs by both managers – and in particular from Nuno with a threadbare squad.

So, the final week in the regular season sees AA and JG slugging it out for the title.  JG do their bit with a comprehensive 2-0 win over Oaklake.  What could AA do?  They faced their “nemesis“ in NW, who would surely try to stop the party.  Well no, as it happens.  They had the Cup Final to think about, allowing AA to win comfortably (2-0) and win the title for the 2nd time in their history.

So to the play-offs, and DL, NH, TB and SH face off.  DL sneak through on pens after a 0-0 against NH, who came on all guns blazing in the 2nd half of the season.  TB beat SH 6-2 in the other semi.

In the final, it’s a tight old affair, as CP plays CP and no side excels.  The match gets drawn 0-0, and on to penalties.  In the end, DL’s keeper Mejohan is the hero, saving three TB shots to take the Legends into the top flight.

The Cup Final sees NW and TH facing off, in an all ZD affair.  This led to a pretty boring stalemate, and eventually pens.  Again, a goalie was the hero – TH’s Spreksl (hmmm, he can’t be much good J) saving 4 pens out of 5 to hand Totts the game, and start a glorious spell for the Heats.

Oh, and lastly on games, Brazil beat England in the final of the WC 3-1.  Let’s hope that this result is turned on it’s head in a few months time!

Players of the year time – and time to put the case for Simpson as the best defender in SAEFL history.  Before he came along, no defender had won player of the season.  Simpson didn’t just do it in Season 7 – he also did it in Season 8, netting 433 EMP.

FarleyJr (DS - GU) scored the young player of the year award; O. Ardiles (CM – NW) was named midfielder of the year; J. Euell (CF – MR) was forward of the year.

Bart and Nuno Lima took manager of the year in their respective divisions.

Now for the results of the pop quiz.

  • Why was I annoyed at some of the freaks at the top of the page? – because I sold them (McPhysto and Lockwood, plus Thundercats and at least one other in a one season spell)  before they got good.  It just goes to show you – a manager does not always have to have luck.

  • The trade with Bart was blimmin annoying because Jack had peaked and was stable.  After I sold him to Bart, he peaked again and became a freak (yes – Bart is my trade nemesis) – showing the importance of not assuming that players that are not rising cannot start rising again.

  • Oh, and the binary – the goals conceded by AA in the league each week (an average of 0.4 goals per game).  Attack wins titles?  Not always … the defence rests, your honour.

So, season 8 is over.  What for season 9?

Next week, and the league sees a triple MVP, Bart gets his revenge, and a Winger wins forward of the year!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Playing against Nuno is always tough, a very strong defensive line can stop us or a CP can turn this game in a GK battle. Let's wait and see!

InterQuartile Rangers

What disappointment?  I don't expect to win any games, therefore it's hard to be disappointed.  I just don't have the right kind of luck for SAEFL's random number generator.  Look at last week's game.  Even though I had more than 3 NSL less, the difference in EMP was 0.91.  Yet it was an 8 goal difference!  There was at least one other game with a EMP difference of 1 and it was a 1 goal game.  You can't blame it entirely on my keeper.  Yes he was .5 NSL less but the difference in EMP was 0.29.  But he missed all those saves....

Hamm got 5 goals but on 13 shots.  Batata got 5 goals but on only 8 shots.  Last season selling him sounded like a good idea, but then he was in a different division.  The money helped me raise my NSL by about 4 points, but it isn't doing me any good.  At least it doesn't seem to matter if you lose.  I should have kept the money.  It would buy a lot of beer to ease the pain of all these lost games....

Like i said last week, we had to rest players for the two matches coming and make sure that the backup team performed decent. And they did perform decent, even more than decent.

That 1 point felt like a victory and with good result in the coming two matches, leaguematches, we can keep the gap between TB and CA small enough to make a reall effort winning seasons 11 title. Yes, we will go for that in the second half this season. And off course, a decent aging would help, and again some moaning about the GK, FB and striker section, confidence though about the AS and DM, not sure about the MF section.

This week against AA. Trying to surprise nathan with a CP CA play, i am curious about his tactic.

Well somehow we ended up losing again last week.  If we keep this up, we are going to end up relegating to Division Three. So now we are in seventh place, but you could think of it as being tied for third from the last, which is obviously not a great place to be.  Of the three weeks left before mid week aging, in two of them we play teams that we are tied with at the time being right now.  Both of these games will be big ones so we have a chance to finish in an ok spot for the middle of the season.

Hopefully we will have a good aging and will come out in the second half of the season winning.  Our goal is just to make the playoffs this season- I don't think we are quite ready to be promoted unless we have a great aging.  Either way, we need to win this week, which could be hard because we are resting a couple of players who are getting low stamina.  I think we can still pull it off though, hopefully.

"We are playing it rather close to the vest in this week's matchup vs.

EU. If we can come away with a single point in this one, SH will be very happy. I think we are about ready for an upswing in our club's fortunes.

But this is dependent upon our ability to score which has been almost non-existent. Our Kiddie Corp is holding up well despite all of the stick they have been taking.

The SH squad feels things have been rather quiet throughout the SAEFL so far this season, despite the usual jabbering between our Dutch comrades and the South Africans. Well, starting next week, SH has decided to stir the pot a little.

Stay tuned.

Can we turn things around?

I asked this question to Manager David Thomas earlier this week after losing in both games last week.

"We will certainly try to Stephanie.  In the cup it was a dissappointment but the league we rested a few of the main players to keep them fresher for this week and the next cup game.  It is a big goal difference to make up and it will be a test for the lads to get up."

"There has been speculation in the last couple of weeks regarding a possible trade of star AM Mats Swansson.  Can you confirm or deny these rumours?"

"In any sporting team especially ones that are struggling, there are always going to be rumours of transfer speculation regarding star players.  Sure, Mats hasn't been performing well lately but then neither has anyone else really including myself, whether I be up front scoring goals or on the sidelines managing."

"So, is that a confirmation or denial then?"

"Mats and I have sat down and spoken about this and we are very good friends having known each other for 20 years.  Whatever happens there will be no breaking up of our friendship."

"It seems like your dodging the question and trying not to answer."

"Yourself and the readers will read into anything and draw their own conclusions anyway whether I confirm or deny.  The truth is that no player on this squad is beyond being transferred so as long as the club itself benefits.  All the players know this and let's face it, should a multi-million dollar offer come along or the right players in a trade that will improve the team in the long run, would the fans really hang me up by my boot strings."

"There are some very vocal fans out there not beyond a bit of violence and hooliganism, so who knows David."

David chuckles, "I guess you right Stephanie.  But realistically I don't think any of them, (though they barely have a brain between the 200 of them) , would hold a grudge against me for doing something that in the next couple of years may get the club up the the second division and possibly challenging for promotion to first division."

"Thanks for your time and insight David."

"Always a pleasure Stephanie."

So Kickers fans, though he didn't confirm or deny the rumour, it looks like he might be entertaining thoughts of selling off Mats Swansson to rebuild the squad and try to get the team out of the league cellar.

Trial and Error... This is the what coach and manager Bryan Banfield had to say at last weeks press report. "It's a matter of finding a winning combination." Coach Banfield is still optomistic about this season but he knows that is gonna take some time every week to find that winning team.

Most of these player have never player together and he feels that a little more trust is needed in the team.

This week will be and interesting out-come.

We are looking forward to seeing you in the stands.

I've been trying to trick Brian into lining up his top 11 and perhaps even waisting a boost or grudge.

There is no way i can win this away game against FU even with my best lineup and a grudge. The difference in NSL is just to big, not even counting the 7% morale gap.

Brian doesn't even has to field his best top eleven to win from DV at home before the aging.

So a perfect game to test 2 of my new players, a new captain and rest all key players.

A very small price for a temporary grave stone...:)

midseason aging is only a few weeks away and more games against FU will follow.

Week 19 is the week for a stronger lineup from DV

DV will probably not be a top team this season, but with so many young players next year is looking very promising.

I'm still aiming for the 5th spot on the league table, after this game I expect DV to loose 3 more points before the aging. Hopefully that will be enough to stay in the top half of the table.

A solid win at home last week kept us 3 points clear of the relegation zone. FE are just 5 points ahead of us in the playoff zone so we are going to attempt to close the gap. The choice was whether to play a grudge or a boost and because FE lost last week and we won and we are at home we've decided that a boost may be sufficient to give us a result.

Good game last week and that will be the last time that I ever wish luck to the opposition.

The grudge card was a surprise and not expected, and with out it you would have lost. The one thing I want to know though is, do you really not like the Fanatics or do you play the card as a "boost" to you team.

I feel that the grudge card is there for teams that you don't like and have a "grudge" against, boosts are used for just that a boost. I know that after aging I will properly have a grudge card every game. I know this because everyone else hates a winner, like Man UTD say in there article, "We are not hated anymore, and we care".

I will update the grave stones next week (no time this week), it will have AV in it, but they will be coming out of the grave with a broken grave stone. This because the grudge card should not have been played, they were under ground and the grudge card just saved them.

Or on the reverse side, maybe it is time for the Fanatic to drop in the league table, only time and aging will tell.

Fantastic eleven

Had a really bad lose last weekend hope it will go better this week.
