A HISTORY OF SAEFL (Season 9) – NO MORE BLUES AS THE LEAGUE ENTERS A NEW ERA

Season 8 saw AA win the title for only the second season in their history after a titanic battle with JG. So, would the tables be turned in season 10?

Season 9

Usually SAEFL is full of goals.  But week 1 is a mixed-bag.  While EU-JG throws up 15 (season 8 runners-up Jazz Greats winning by one goal), and TH AS yielding another 39 (TH winning well). AP NW, CA GU, EW DL and AA LU allow only two goals between them (EW winning 1-0 and, in the surprise of the week AA get beaten 1-0 by a strong looking LU, with a penalty deciding the match).

The other interesting fact in week 1 – JG plays with an 11 NSL keeper … named Lathouwers?  One is impossible, the other is more so! (J)

In division 2, FI, TB and SH look mighty strong, and they all get off to winning ways.

As usual, trading at this time sees NW and AA trading hard, with JG not far behind (who pick up a number of good players).  Mike is obviously in a transitional phase, and decides to shift out a number of his former freak stars.

So, onto the famous ageing.  Who will be the movers and shakers this season?

NW - CM O. Ardiles 12.5

CA - AS A. McPhysto 12.25

CA - DM M. Phantom  10

GU - DS S. Nevland 12

DL - FB K. Ontebonker 9 (I still like the name J)

DL - CF M. Oederneuker 9 (how to DL come up with these names!)

One of the big games in week 2 sees NW and AA face off.  They draw 0-0 (games between Mike and Nathan are rarely anything but tight).  Another big-un sees JG and TH emp close to 140.  I think this was the point where most SAEFL managers sat up and realised that TH would have a strong side down the stretch.  In the second division, TJ played FI – and the away team showed their steel, and title aspirations, with a decent 2-0 win.

The cup always sees some surprises.  And Season 9 sees JG scrape a draw with OC, and AR manage to beat AA 1-0! (maybe this one wasn’t a shock given AA going out of the cup in other seasons).

Week 4 sees AA off the winning mark, but way behind LU and JG, who are playing very well.  NW lose again, this time to TH (they also have 2 men sent off to the Totts 1).  Could the former masters of the game struggle to stay up?

Week 5, and the cup.  OC beat JG on the away rules – a big shock.  AA sneak through by 2 goals to 1 on aggregate v AR.

Boy oh boy LU and JG must be loving this, as NW and AA can only draw the following week, as league hostilities resume.  Surely both are out of the running now, and a new name (from NW and AA) will adorn the SAEFL Division 1 trophy for the first time since season 3!  Both the ‘new kids’ (if they can be called that) win well, as do TH, who must be considered a title threat.

Division 2 sees TB drop their first points of the season when they slip up 16-12 to TJ.  SH and FI draw 1-1, with CM CM F. Neitzche (I forgot him earlier – he’s a 12 NSLer at this stage) putting in sterling work for the home team.  That result would only have pleased the Booies management.

And wot, wot, wot?  No trades in Week 6.

Interesting to see a bit of press this week though from EW:

“Off the field, Bracegirdle was left licking his wounds after a fierce bidding war to secure a DM in the draft. Excelsior had all but put pen to paper to sign the boy for a hefty 385k, when in leapt Stannington Historical with a 386k bid. Bracegirdle had no authority form the chairman to go any higher and had to watch as his target walked away. (Peter : It amazes me what you guys pay for players !! in the old days he would have sold for about 120k)”

Now, the very same player would probably sell for 600k! (add another 100k per season from this point ;))

IQ’s press is also interesting:

“I don't know why Peter was surprised that IQ didn't score any goals during the cup rounds.  We've only had one goal all season.  I'd say it was a fluke, but when you're bunkered down trying to minimize the damage you don't score many goals.  And minimize the damage is all this team can try to do. (Peter : I don’t write the Match report comments, Bart (JG) or Nathan (AA) or Ivo(CA) does- Bart wrote them last week after a few err loads of pints)”

Very little changes in SAEFL.  I usually have a skin full before preparing match reports; oh, and press; oh, and my teams; oh, and (insert anything here).

Week 7 sees a big change in SAEFL.  LU, who had won every game until that point, get beat by TH in a great game:

At this point, the Totts go from being a league outsider to a real live candidate – if they could beat the best ZD team in the league at their own game, anything could be possible.  JG also win, to make things skin tight at the top of the league.  Who would have a nose-bleed first?

FI, TB and SH all win in division 2, and it looks like it’s 1 from 3 in each division.

The old big teams never die – they just go into hybernation.  And week 8 proves this point.  After a sticky opening, NW are on fire – a winning streak continues with victory over CA.  AA, meanwhile, give a bloody nose to championship contenders JG.  They get a little lucky, but win it 1-0 with a penalty. Oh – and JG had over 15,000 locked out of the ground!

TH only manage a draw, but LU win, as the battle for top spot gets a little murkier … for the time being.

The big game in division 2 sees SH play TB, who are starting to stutter after a great opening 6 weeks to the season, and get another beating in this one – 14-10.  This is despite the home side having two men sent off after 17 and 28 minutes.  Keepers can win matches, and in this case, P. Jones of the Historicals did just that, saving 25 shots to his opponents 10 (and Kirkland was a top keeper at this point).

Week 9, and DL, who are on themselves on a decent run after a good draw with TH the week before, end any lingering chances of a NW title with a 9-6 win.

In the big game of the week, LU play JG.  Great game between two great sides:

This result meant that, realistically, JG could not afford to slip up again if they wanted to win the title.  At this point, the race looked very much between the leaders LU, and TH, coming up on the rails.  Could anyone make a late spurt?

In division 2, ES beat OC, despite having only 12 shots to the oppositions 12.  Peter is dumbfounded, but comes up with a solution (how unlike Peter ;))

Peter : It’s the Fossy Curse I remember when Len ran OC after Nathan left for AA, I could not explain why every used GC against him and his team was so unlucky ! I thought it was Len but now I see it’s the Team, and they have only had this type of lucky since Nathan left them. Image what will happen when Nathan leaves AA.”

Just as well I have not left AA then … although they don’t seem to get much luck – unless you call perennial 2nd in the league, and early cup exits, is lucky!

This one’s for you Don.  Week 9 also sees AR make a smart transfer move:

FI -> AR MF O. Pulmao 6,00 age 19

AR -> FI 135,000

Week 10 sees TH draw while LU and JG win.  When, the following week, TH get turned over by an improving AA, the title race for the Totts is suddenly looking less likely – AA emping 158 just to prove they are still around.

Mind you, LU also lose in week 11 – Nuno had been telling others that he was going to have to rest up, and this his small squad might cost him.  This brings JG, winners in both weeks, nearer to Lisbon.  TH follow, then AA, and AS round up the top 5.

The same week, Don (you get two mentions this week ;)) enter the league with a solid 4-1 win against DS.  SH, meanwhile, field 101.25 as they keep up their promotion charge, with FI and TB also in the picture.

The cup – and AA go out early (again) – this time on penalties versus NH.  That’s not the biggest shock, as an SAEFL team beats up LU bad (35-15 on aggregate!).  An SA team also beats TJ, to leave a real mix in the quarter finals.

In the league, it looks as though LU are getting stage fright, and scrape a draw versus strugglers DL.  A –4% formation error doesn’t help matters … eer … nor does NO TACTIC! (this is something for all newbies in SAEFL – no tactic is a no go!). AP beat TH, who are fading, while AA’s draw at EW finishes both these teams title aspirations.  JG, meanwhile, just about win at GU, and now lie only 2 points behind the one time runaway leader in Lisbon.

Great games in division 2 see 1st (FI) play 3rd (TB), and 2nd (TJ) play 4th (SH).  SH easily beat TJ, who rest up, and fall a further point begind FI, who are involved in a right game!:

Week 13, and AA’s Wictoria is sent off for the 4th time in 8 matches!  Great player, but he’s always had trouble staying on the park.  TH lose again, and their title charge is fast evaporating.  LU draw, and JG win.  The Greats, who looked almost out of the title shake up by week 7 or 8, are now level on points with their faltering rival at the top of the league due to a mixture of poor performances by LU and a great winning streak from Bart’s men.

TB also enlighten the league with some science in Week 13:

“Every week grown men take position behind their computer and make a great effort to express themselves to the world. Emotion, facts, comments and even amateurphoto’s hits the internetspace. How many words have been wasted this season already, see for yourself in the diagramme below; (Peter : LOL this is great I bet the Dutch account to 95% of that waste ! )”

After terrible runs, both LU and TH win in Week 14 (ageing week – but we will leave that one this time around).

Remarkably, I seem to have miscalculated AA’s points because, after Week 15, where they won, JG drew and LU lost, they lie only 1 point behind Jazz, and are two points up on LU! – 29, 28, 26).  TH are on 24, and not out of it yet either.  The season is far, far, far from over.

An important game in division 2 sees 2nd placed TJ play 3rd placed TB as they looked to keep the pressure on leaders FI.  Unfortunately for both, a 0-0 draw only helped Inferno, who won their game 6-0 v SH to really take command of their own destiny.

A blood bath in week 16 sees 3 sent off and two injured as a relegation 6 pointer saw AS beat EU 13-9.  In fact, with 9 sent off and 9 injured overall, it was a bit of a bloodbath all round in the gamesweek.

In division 2, FI and TJ both lose – giving heart to TB, who win against IQ.  The week is also notable for Mike from NW trading away 10 players and bringing in 9 in a hope of getting staying in the top flight (he was only just on the right side of the red line) and winning the cup.  Would it work?

The following week is a superb one for all SAEFL enthusiasts.  TH keep up their slim title chances with a slim 0-1 win v CA.  AA have 3 chances to beat EU – but fail to do so, and seemingly drop out of the title race a little,  But wait!  In a real turnaround of form, LU grudge against JG and beat the Greats 1-0 on their own patch to really throw the bread among the pigeons (or something like that).  This left the table as follows: JG 32, LU 32, AA 32, TH 27.  Season ON!!!!!!

In division 2, with FI and TJ drawing, it’s still anyone’s guess as to the title finally goes to.

Many people think that high prices are a season 11 phenomenon.  Think again!

DS - 7.5 - 22 - Bid  624,000k - L. Sanford (ARG); AS - 7.0 - 21 - Bid 559,000 - J. Probst (NZ) – both to SH.

Week 18 sees a swing in the league.  TH and AA close each other down, drawing 0-0 for a result that helps neither team.  LU rest up and are well beaten by AS; but JG easily beat DL to take control of the league (well, by 2 points from AA).

Division 2, and FI are leaking points like no tomorrow.  A poor draw v OC sees TB with the chance – and they take it, winning 6-15 v ES, to go top.  TJ also get 3 points to give them an outside shot at league glory.

Week 19, and AA keep up their hopes of title success with a 2-0 win v EW.  JG win to keep the leadership, but LU also win, so it looks as though it might go to the wire.  TH get beaten, so their chances are over.  In a big battle at the bottom, EU throw a grudge at CA, who throw a grudge right back, and steal the game 7-3.  England don’t look good to stay in the top flight at this time.

BIG BIG BIG BIG BIGGER BIGGEST game though, sees a massive battle at the top of the 2nd division, as 1st (TB) played the team they dethroned from that lofty position the week before (FI).  In a barnstorming game (grudges were drawn), the match ended 10-10 – and neither team could really quibble.   TJ managed a win, and therefore closed the gap to two points on the 1st and 2nd sides.

JG are really flowing by this stage in the season, and a really top performance against the always dangerous NW (147 EMP and an 8-1 win) solidifies their chances of a title at last.  AA get a good win against CA, but LU only draw v GU.  I’m losing track at this point, but I think (hmmm) JG have 41 points, AA are on 39, LU are back on 36.

It’s a roller-coaster of a season in 2, as TB lose control of the league as OC turn the tables on them, and not in a small way (8-0 – but two sending offs didn’t help the home side).  FI win to wrestle back the lead, but TJ are not on form, and get well beaten by an IQ side just looking to finish mid table.  SH are having a revival, and a win v NH closes the gap to 3rd.  Oh, by the way – you thought Wictoria was a bad boy?  AM J. Williams got sent off for the 5th time for NH v SH!!!!!!!

In a killer game for AA’s league chances, they are beaten by constant rivals NW.  Mike played a good side, but Nathan picked the wrong tactic, and the early bath of star striker Heskey (another red card addict) was the difference.

Can JG take advantage – well not really.  They nick a draw against TH, who emp a massive 153 (and really should have won) to show they will be a major threat in the following seasons.  LU net a win, and a good one, v EW, so that makes it …JG 42 points, AA 39 points, LU 39 points.

Not that division2  is any less tight (boy, this is good stuff!).  Week after week we see big games in this league, and TJ play FI in the biggest game.  Jazz grudge, and come away with a 0-0 draw.  TB can only draw though, while SH win.  I really have lost count of the points total this time around!

Week 22, and the dream is finally over for AA.  They look rusty, and get narrowly beaten by GU.  JG sneak a win v EW, and LU hammer TH 6-0.  So its – JG 45, LU 42, and AA out of it on 39 points (who are in danger of missing out on the top 2 for the first time in their history!)

Oh, and a little note for CA’s S Avery.  He is sent off after only 1 minute v AS!

It is also a pivotal week in division 2, as FI and TB win, while TJ and SH get beaten.  It is now up to the top 2 teams to lose their positions.

The following week sees the cup finalists decided, and it is NH, coming from the depths of division 2, who beat NW 15-12 overall to book a fantastic place in the final versus a very strong TH.

JG are looking really good for the title, and they hand AA a bloody 1-0 nose to almost seal the title LU also win, but they are a long way behind on goal difference, so the title, although not mathematically won, is all but stitched.

FI, already certain of promotion, party against PN, while TB win to seal promotion as well.

In week 24, with everything sewn up, its relegation matters that count.  And EU, DL and the once mighty CA taste the bitter pill of relegation (well, maybe not so bitter for CA now!).  FI and TB both win in division 2, but Inferno take the title.

It’s the division 1 v 2 all star game in week 25.  And Bart, although a champion, obviously struggles to pick his own nose based on this one J.  He picks himself in goal, and then preceeds to let in 18 goals as 2 beat 1 for the first time ever.

NH had a great run to reach the final of the cup, but in the end, division1 class proved a little too much for the 2nd division outfit. A strong ZD team wins 3-0 to win the silverware for Mark; and with a bunch of young guys, other managers were already talking about a title challenge in season 10.

As for the play offs, SH, NH (tired after the cup), TJ and OC faced off, with SH and TJ reaching the final.  Historicals were up and down all season, but obviously peaked at the right time, and had by far the better of the CP exchange (oddly, The Jazz played a stronger team in the semi than in the final) to win 4-0 and taste promotion.

So, where did the other prizes go this year?

Golden boots were won by Peters (AP) and Odingsells (PN).  Player of the season, for the 3rd – yes, 3rd time in a row, was AA’s fantastic servant B. Simpson.  Midfielder of the year was won by NW’s CM O. Ardiles, while the forward of the season prize went to … a Winger????

Well yes; while CF’s had dominated previous seasons for this gong, PN’s W. Greene (a 12.5 freak) netted the award, with a mere 321.31 EMP.  In fact, while before the likes of McGoo and Simpson, forwards had won the player of the season award, Greene emped less than Simpson and Ardiles.  I guess this shows that, in  the early days, while WP was king, tactics like CP and ZD had become vogue in seasons 7, 8 and 9.

AA won defensive side of the year (how many seasons in a row)?, while Bart and Marco won the managers’ managers gongs, and Colin and Robert G (AS and NH) got Peter’s votes.

This was a truly thrilling year for SAEFL.  Tight battles everywhere.  What would season 10 bring?  Well, the unexpected, as usual!

Excelsior Warren

From the Excelsior Herald...

The cup provided a welcome distraction after last week's defeat at IQ. The team has performed poorly in the league this season and many felt that Bracegirdle was under some pressure for the trip to Div 3 Deo Volente. The home loss had been regarded by many as a fluke, but others say you make your own luck in football and the plucky Cardinals had certainly taken the game to a jaded looking Excelsior. Bracegirdle took no chances in the away leg and put out an attacking team designed to steramroller the opposition. It worked, but not before a highly entertaining game with the third division outfit again punching above their weight with confidence. Still the job was done and the history books will record a win. Bracegirdle can relax for another couple of days, before the visit of NW. What are NW doing near the bottom of the league. This must be a trap to ensnare the unwary. Excelsior better be firing on all cylinders, because this correspondent can smell a home shocker coming along.

F.C Inferno

In the last minute I decided to play a boost in the cup and my best GK. It seems it definitely was the best call. A 1-0 loss (2-1 on aggregate) that allows FI to move on to the next round. Very tight!

On the league we also face TB. I expect Jeroen to field a very strong CP, as the league is their last hope for a winning season. Let's respond with the same defensive tactic used in the cup... can we get a point here?

InterQuartile Rangers

A win!  It feels good.  However, I do need to thank the refs since the red card helped.  But I don't think it's going to change much in the long run.  I only have a couple of wins over the first half of the season.  I'll need at least twice that to avoid relegation.  Hamm impressed again making 5 of 6 shots.  Albert was nearly as good making 4 of 7.  My keeper with less NSL had a slightly better save percentage.  In any case, it was a welcome change.

The cup game was a little bit of a surprise.  From the score you'd think IQ was a Div 1 team. :-)  But again, that perception is aided by a red card.  If you look at how close the first game was, and I was away this time, the boost was prudent.  Hamm's not so impressive in this game.  Albert come through again.  Looking farther back in the midfield, Convey and Stewart both did 3 goals for 4 shots.  It's encouraging to see the quality spread around.

The next round can get dicey.  There are a lot of  Division 1 teams making it thru.  This year I don't get the Div 2 bonus for playing in the cup.  It will be interesting to see how far we get.

Okay well we got another 0-0 tie again last week.  I don't know what it is with this season because we have tied more than every other season I have been with PN combined.  So now we are in seventh place in Division Two but tied fourth from last so really not all that great.  All we can hope for is that we will start winning a few before aging and then come out of aging with a better team so we will win more than 2 games out of 14.

So now we are just hoping for a win (or a tie, I suppose, as that seems to be our thing this season) until we make it to aging.

Midweek News

A big match in the cup early this week sees the Kickers trying to overhaul a 5 goal deficit to advance to the quarter finals.  Playing away at Adirondack will make this a tough task as transfer rumours surrounding AM Mats Swansson continue to gain momentum.

Will Manager Thomas forego the 5 goal deficit and concentrate on this week's league match against or will he try to overcome the 5 goals and try to advance?

"I am a firm believer in trying to win every game if possible Stephanie so we will try to beat Adirondack," David replied when asked.

Post Cup Match

The kickers are out of the cup but managed a 1-nil win over Adirondack.  The 5 goal deficit proved too much but the players ability to still win away is a good chance for the team to kick on and move up the league.

As the week progressed though, their was no denying that Mats Swansson could soon be moving away from Adelaide for greener pastures in higher divisions.

"I would love to stay here in at the Kickers," Mats said.  "David and I have been friends for a very long time but as the team is going at the moment it will probably be a while before the team makes Div. 1, if it ever happens."

"We have had enquiries from a number of teams so far including Adirondack, so Don got a good look at him playing the other day but I am expecting lots of teams to come knocking on the club's door wanting to secure his services," replied David when asked about the rumours.

So there you have it, out of the cup, AM Swansson soon to leave the club and apparently no hope for the club in the future.  Does this inspire confidence for the supporters or not?

Reporter: Brian tell us, how are you winning so much, what is special about you and your team?

Manager: Hard work, integrating the differences in the team, and I never draw a grave until they are beet.

Reporter: What is your opinion of last weeks game?

Manager: I am disappointed, even if I was going to win the game from the start , that is no reason to hide in the corner and take it like an abused child. If DV had give given a bit of effort? I think my fan rating when down because the game was so booooooring.

I would like to win the league, I would like to win every game from now on, but more than winning I want good games, games that put my fans on the end of their sets. My team with never just say that they have won the game and these guys are easy, we will fight hard for every game. Every team I play has a chance of beating me, just no one has done it yet...

I know everyone has been waiting for my trophy update and here it is:
