DIVISION 1 GAMES

Bart;s Greats have performed well on their own patch so far this season, but, well, got less than great results on their travels. So, against a AP side that have proved vulnerable this term, this match would prove a useful staging post for where Bart could realistically expect to take his team this season. And fortunately for Bart, Martin seemed to be in the mood to help his Dutch pal. Apocs must have needed to rest up, and perhaps thought that the Jazz would play a different tactic to their usual WP. However, Martin * cough * got this one wrong, and with a weakened team playing a tactic that only has a marginal impact on a WP side, the win for JG was inevitable. Even so, Martin will be a tad worried about the limited performance of his side. JG keep the pressure on the top sides with the 3 points; AP will need to up their game to avoid the drop zone.

I expected IQ to be real challengers this season in SAEFL; but they seem to have a different challenge on the cards to the one expected. In the red-zone, they needed a win against a OC side that has played decently, if not spectacularly, this term to date. But in this game, OC did perform spectacularly. With 100 NSL on the pitch, and playing with 11 men on the pitch for all 90 minues, they took apaer IQ’s defensive line up to net the win – Wictoria performing with particular merit. Terry and Keith will be anticipating the ageing after next week, as it could well determine both side’s destiny this season.

Noshaki have been stuck at the bottom of the league all season – but somehow you always get the feeling that Mike will be able to turn it around. Well, if Mr Suwandi wants to stay in the top flight, he needs results – and now. Otherwise the gap to the safety zone may become too large for even him to breach. This was a key game, with EW only 1 point and 1 place above the red zone coming into the match, and the points difference to NW would be 8 points with a EW win – nearly 3 games. And an 8 point gap (with EW) is what NW must face up to – for in a game of attack, EW had just about the better of the EMP, chances and goals. Blank, Soult, McCarthy1 and Hof all had good games for the home side; but the key moment came when NW had a surprise in the 41st minute, as Kinder got his marching orders for an off the ball incident. Simon will no doubt be delighted with this result. His opponent will be less enamoured. The expression “the going gets tough” has never been so appropriate for one of the best managers in this esteemed game.

AA have been really performing above expectations this season. On paper, they have one of the weakest squads in the division; yet despite this, before a tough looking game with TH, they stood in 2nd position – only 1 point off of CA and 4 points ahead of FI. Never-the-less, Nathan must have feared TH, who, despite their relatively low position in the league, are very dangerous. AA therefore decided to go defensive, and it worked a treat against Mark’s side, whose CP tactics could not break down a side with nearly 5 NSL less on the pitch, and without the vital 2% extra gained from bein g at home. So, no chances, no goals, and a draw. AA and TH might both feel disappointed at getting 1 point, but I guess Alcie fans may see this as 1 point gained, not 2 points lost. The question is, would Nathan be disappointed with the gap to CA likely to rise to 3 points after the game below …

Well, maybe not. In fact, Nathan will be delighted. LU are a very strong squad, and many managers are perplexed as to why LU currently operate in 2nd to last position in the top flight. Well, not for any longer, as, playing a good CP side, they just about out-muscled and beat a CA side that would have expected to take at least a point from this match. On EMP and chances, CA just shaded it. On sendings off, it was a level affair – Gomes_1 walking off the pitch shortly after Zidane for Catbel. But in the end (for once this week), the NSL of a keeper really did make the differene, and while LU’s stopper shut the door on CA 20 out of 28 occasions, Ivo’s number 1 only managed to stop 11 from 26 – and hence 15-8 was the final score in favour of the home side. CA stay on 23 points, level with AA, but ahead on goal difference. Now we await 2 games between the top 2 teams, with ageing intervening in what will be a very interesting mid-point to the season.

However, Jeroen’s Booeys are having a nice term themselves, and they no doubt have top 2 aspirations of their own. Over the 90 minutes, they gave FI a bloody nose. However, the problem with defensive tactics is that EMP domination does not always lead to a great number of additional shots from your opponent. And with the points gap not quite 10, FI only gave up 1 more shot than TB. And yet again, an inferior keeper out-performs the better stopper on paper, leading to a 1-1 draw. So the gap to the top 2 remains an agonising 4 points. But Marco will still be licking his lips, and will sense a title challenge is still on the cards.
