DIVISION 2 GAMES

MR have been a great team in the past. But right now, they cannot get it together. 89 NSL is decent at division 2 level, and CP can be effective against offensive sides. But generating 4 more points than your NSL base is never going to get a team the results it desires (unless MM, OFF or SM is played), and Bruce will be left scratching his head in an attempt to get his side out of the bottom 3. EU have no such problems, and their WH team shrugged aside their division 2 strugglers with ease – netting 17 goals – and all but one of Mike’s 11 on the pitch got into double EMP figures. Tasty indeed. Would England’s victory see them move up the table, and even into an automatic promotion spot. Time to find out …

EU and other teams won’t worry DL if they keep up this sort of form. To date, 9 games have yielded 9 wins, 27 points, and 125 goals. Well, now that can be made 10, 10, 30 and 140. At this stage, all kinds of division 2 records are up for grabs. The Legends (and I think they can rightly be called that right now) put to the sword a ES side that really, really played well. OK, with an aid of a grudge. But nearly 133 EMP is really nice. Even so, DL just picked their best WP side, and generated even more – 135 (and without a grudge, and away from home). The 15-8 score might flatter Druss a little; but make no bones about it, Division 1 teams are likely to fear this side next season, just as CA are feared this term in the top flight. As for Peter’s ES, they must take significant credit out of the 90 minutes, and if they continue to perform like this, will surely make the top 6 come week 25.

Stewart must look at the table this season (DL apart), and think “real chance” this term (and I don’t mean of relegation). But PN themselves are a decent outfit, and should be looking at the top echelons of this tier of football. Certainly, Napier looked like a tasty outfit as, once again, a WP side out-performed a CP side (are the limits of Counter-Punch now being realised?). Nol was in top form, scoring a hatt-rick for the home side; but even though they created more chances than their opponents, a limited keeper had a damaging impact on the final result, with an extra 6 chances going a-begging for Kelly’s lot. So, a 18-18 draw, which will really not suit either boss. Still, PN is a hard place to come to at any time, and Stew may end up being thankful for his single point reward.

GU also smell glory this season; but they will not get it if results keep going for them like this. Unlucky would be an under statement. Don played a 4 NSL striker in attack. A 7.25 DM, a 6 CB and other limited players. If his team were a elderly dog, they would have rolled over and awaited their fate. But GU simply could not put the knife into their opponents. 17 more NSL on the pitch; 27 more EMP; 3 more chances. Yet a 8 NSL keeper managed to keep out 3 shots from the home side, and, in the final minutes, the Albers and the Renegades made United pay with an equaliser. So, a point a piece. This result will have Don in stitches. Michael may need stiches to get over this one. Unlike TJ’s Stewart, this is certainly 2 points lost, and at the end of the term, this dead dog might just have taken a big bite out of GU’s title challenge. AR, meanwhile, cannot be complacement. They are still dangerously near the drop zone.

This game is all about decision-making. And although it may have been down to necessity, Tim may, in the cold light of day, regret fielding a 7.75 keeper. Low NSL stoppers can perform David heroics – but David was at least out of nappies before confronting his much larger opponent. Robert, meanwhile, will hope that this result could be the start of a play-off charge.

The match between African Selects and Stannington Historical did not just mean the relegation clash between the numbers 11 and 12 on the league table, no, it was also the clash of the Canadian Managers! Both Colin and Len of course will have realised that the first issue, trying to escape relegation, will have a higher priority this season. However, with 5 points for AS and 1 for SH, the situation is like this: If AS would win this match, it would mean that, although not officially, SH will probably be the first relegation victim. Sure, nothing is sure yet with half of the matches yet to play, but being the nr. 12 team and wanting to escape relegation, you just can’t afford to lose against the nr. 11 if you really want to do something about that. Besides, trying to win points against teams like DL, DS or GU won’t be any easier. On the other hand, if SH would win this one, they would still be the nr. last on the table, but at least it would mean a step in the right direction, and who knows what would be possible after midseason aging. A draw would mean 1 point each, and actually 2 points less than both teams need. Well, in that case I can reassure at least 1 manager, as AS and SH did not share the points. It was Colin who decided that he wanted to try to win this one even without playing a boost or a grudge (wow, that could have been tricky Colin!), and since Len did not play a boost or grudge either, the risk that Colin took paid off: AS was the better team, not only in NSL but also in EMP. That rendered them 4 chances against 1 penalty for SH. Since AS had a 100% scoring percentage, against a 0% for SH. That of course led to another win for AS, who finally win some points lately. Sure, they are still on the wrong side of the line, but who knows what they are capable of now they are in the winning mood. For SH the situation doesn’t look good, as they seem destined to be heading to div 3. Or will Len be able to turn things around?
