DIVISION 1 GAMES

The match between InterQuartile Rangers and NoShaki WC ’98 can already be called a relegation battle, as we see the clash between the numbers 11 and 12 of the league table. Since the differences at the bottom aren’t that big (in fact, the biggest gap at the bottom is between IQ and NW!), this is an opportunity to do something about the poor league position. Well, in Mikes case, it would mean that NW really has to win at least 1 match in this double confrontation (we have the return next week) to stay at least in the slipstream. If NW would lose both matches, I don’t have much faith in a good result in the end for NW, this season. On the other hand, for Terry a win in this match could mean escaping the relegation zone. Looking at what both Terry and Mike put on the pitch, you would not think that this match was important for both of them. And that is not just looking at the NSL/EMP, but the fact that neither team played a grudge or boost said enough. It looks like Mike is totally going for the cup, and saves his grudges and boosts for that, and when it comes to the league, well, I bet he is thinking of doing what CA did. What I don’t know, is if Terry anticipated on that, and figured that he didn’t need a boost to beat NW, and the best thing to do was save that boost for another opponent, or that he was just lucky. It doesn’t matter for the result though, as IQ beat NW 16-11 and that is enough to win 3 very important points, and a good attempt to stay in div 1. Mike on the other hand was unlucky to see 2 players leave the field with a red card, and that cost him 11.09 EMP altogether. Looking at the saving rates of both GK’s that in fact would have been enough to win NW the game, although of course you never know. So, maybe Terry was double lucky this week………

The match of the week of course was the clash between the numbers 1 and 2 in the league, Alcohol Anonymous and Catbel Athletic. After CA’s surprising loss (no offense Nuno) against LU, both teams have 23 points out of 10 matches leading the table with 4 points more than FI. In a double confrontation, this could all be easily changed, and at least FI (but maybe also JG and TB) could end up as a laughing third party. The first confrontation between AA and CA was at the Local Pub. More than 32500 fans gathered to support their teams, and what they saw was that Ivo played a grudge to encrease CA’s chances on a good result, while Nathan didn’t do anything. You could see the CA grudge coming from miles away, so I am not sure why Nathan didn’t do anything. Especially since this is his home game against CA, this would have been a good chance to try to make a difference. Could it be that, while already out of the cup, Nathan is not trying to win the title with AA, and he is saving his grudges for the competition for position nr. 2? Or could it be that Nathan expects to have a much better team after midseason aging? And he saves his grudge for next match, in which he will be a lot better than this week, even though it’s an away game? I guess we have next week and the rest of the second half of the season to find out about all that. For this week, the difference between AA and CA was too big for AA, as the difference between the nrs. 1 and 2 in div 1 was more than 20 EMP (!) (I don’t believe I ever saw that before). The 16-10 for CA in the end was well deserved, and that puts CA firm on first position, 3 points ahead of AA, who will see some teams coming near I’m afraid.

The match between Apocalypse and Oaklake City, is a match between the numbers 6 and 8 of the league table. The difference between them is only 2 points, in OC’s favor, so a win for AP would mean that Martin would catch up, and maybe even climb to the top half of the table, which is just where Keith would like OC to stay. Both AP and OC played a strong team, 99 against 97 NSL, and the difference between them was very small, just a little over 1 EMP in OC’s favour. That resulted in 36 chances each. But here’s what made the difference: AP had a NSL 10 GK on the pitch, and OC “only” a NSL 9 GK. That of course did it, and as a result of that, AP beat OC 17-13. OC drop to the bottom half of the table. Will AP climb to the top half? That depends on the results of EW and TB.

And here’s the result of the EW game, and that means good news for AP and bad news for EW, as this means that AP climb the table while EW stay in the bottom half. It’s also good news for Jazz Greats of course, as once again they show a good performance and beat Excelsior Warren 4-2. Slowly but surely, and without a doubt sneaky, Bart has won quite a lot of points with JG, and have climbed to the 4th place on the table. And since we already witnessed AA lose their game against CA, who knows what more is in it for them. Bart was very lucky though. His 9.5 NSL GK saved 5 out of 7 shots, while Simon saw his NSL 10 GK save only 1 out of 5 shots. So, that means that Simon has every right to feel robbed, with this result, although the difference in NSL would have been in JG’s favour if they would have ended the match with 11 players. Nonetheless: Bart is a lucky bastard this week, with this win JG is only 4 points behind AA, and if FI would lose their game this week, JG would climb to third position, as they already had a better goal difference. EW are not in trouble, no, but they have to be careful to stay away from the relegation zone, because with the victories for IQ and AP this week, that zone is getting closer and closer.

Well, JG are still in 4th position, as FC Inferno did not win their game this week. They did lose points though, as in their home game against Tottenford Heats, they didn’t get any further than 0-0. And that also means that Marco with FI does not fully benefit from the fact that AA lost their match this week. Both teams were almost equally good. TH was just a little better, but that was not good enough for a smother shot. FI ended the match with 10 players because of a red card, and if they would have ended the match with 11 players, I guess that FI would have been better than TH, but not enough for a smother shot either, so this game had 0-0 written all over it. FI stay on third position, but are already 6 points behind CA, so the title is getting farther away, and that while they are also busy in the cup. Same time, JG is getting closer, and who knows what TB will do? On the other side, Mark proves once again to have a very tough side to play against. However, another 0-0 draw only means 1 point, and since other teams at the bottom half are winning, TH drop into the relegation zone. However, I know that Mark won’t be worried, as with a roster full of young and promising players, TH will only get better after midseason aging, and that will be good enough to at least keep them out of trouble, and who knows what more.

Well, JG is not the only team that gets closer to FI and mingles in the battle for at least a top 3 position, as also The Boelewieten manage to win their game this week: 0-2 against Lisbon United. Nuno wasn’t able to repeat last weeks stunt, and played a ZD team that wasn’t as good. Jeroen anticipated on the fact that the chances were big that Nuno would play ZD this week, and tried something completely different: he surprised everyone with a LB! (Man, if even Jeroen is having good tactical thoughts these days, what is happening in the world!!!) That was enough not just to surprise LU, but also to win this match: TB scored 2 out of 4 chances, enough to win the 3 points. Looking closer though: the LB may have been a surprise, but look at both teams: the difference in NSL was already 8, so my guess is that, with the strong AS’s, TB would have won anyway, as also with ZD, CP or BC, it would have been better than this weeks ZD for LU. LU already were in the relegation zone, so it will be no surprise that after this loss, they still are. But good for Nuno, the teams on the other side of the line aren’t that far away, so who knows what’s possible after midseason aging. TB are happy that they can look up, instead of down the table. They are still in 5th position, but the top 3 is only 2 points away, so who knows what next week will bring?
