SAEFL SEASON 10 WEEK 15

DIVISION 1 GAMES

The first match after midseason aging (aren't we all curious how aging has been on the competition?), is between NoShaKi '98 and InterQuartile Rangers. NW is the nr. last in the league, while IQ is just above the relegation zone. The difference between them is 7 points, which is not a safe gap, not by far, so a win would be welcome for both teams. No grudges or boosts played here, so the difference had to be made by tactics and strategy. Well, in that case, NW had the best of it, as Terry apparantly did not speculate on the fact that Mike could play WP. When Mike eventually DID play WP, the extra EMP that his attackers received by his opponents ZD, was too much for IQ to overcome. It resulted in a 7-2 victory for NW, and 3 points that make the difference between these 2 teams only 4 points, but NW will remain the number last for at least one more week, because there's more to catch up with.

The match of the week, for the second week in a row, was of course the battle between the numbers 1 and 2 of div 1, Catbel Athletic against Alcohol Anonymous. Last week we saw CA beat AA in an away game, how would the leader of the table perform in their home game? Well, they could not beat AA for the second time. Unlike last week, Nathan played a team this week that had the potential to trouble CA. He probably waited for the midseason aging, expecting AA would get better than in the first half, and maybe even hoped that Ivo would not play a Grudge card after last weeks match. And that while he did play a GC himself, in an effort to surprise CA and get even for last weeks, result. However, Ivo did not take any chances and played a Grudge as well. That would have made CA 10 EMP stronger than AA (which could have been enough for a win), if it weren't for the fact that S Milamber lost his nerve and was sent off already in the 13th minute, causing CA a loss of 10.95 EMP. With that, CA and AA were almost equally strong, and since AA played ZD, it will be no surprise that the outcome in the end was 0-0. Given the circumstances, that is a result that noone can complain about. The difference between CA and AA stays 3 points in CA's favour, so the fight for the championship remains very exciting. With 1 point, AA has 24 points now, so we have to wait what FI, JG and TB have done this week, to see if the battle for the 2nd place remains exciting as well.

Oaklake City and Apocalypse are 2 midtable teams, on positions 6 and 7 (so that is literally!). Last week we saw AP beat OC in their home match, will we see OC get back at them at the Dome of the Oaks? The answer, unfortunately for Keith, is no. Martin played a boost, where Keith didn't, and that might very well have been what was decisive: The difference in EMP was 8.50, so enough to be sure of a victory. Especially when you consider that AP's GK was NSL 10, which was 0.5 more than OC's GK. All this lead to a fair victory for AP: 6-2, and that makes that the difference between these 2 teams is already 4 points. Enough for AP to strenghten their position in the top half of the table, while OC have to watch out not to drop too far.

One of the teams that could climb past OC, if they win this weeks match, is Excelsior Warren. But Simon already knew that this weeks match would be a difficult one, as the opponent would be Jazz Greats, the team that is not waiting to catch up with OC, but aiming at a top position. Since we saw AA win only 1 point this week, a victory could bring JG 3 points behind, and that is only 1 victory away with still 10 matches to play. Every reason for Bart to win this one, and he did not hesitate to put a good team on the pitch: a 97 NSL Wingplay team. That was a lot more than EW showed us, as Simon must have thought that points will be won easier in other matches, because he fielded no more than 87.75 EMP. The 19-11 victory for JG will be no surprise after all. JG stay in the race for a top position, while EW have to watch out not to loose too many points, or they'll get in the danger zone.

After the first half of the league, the results of Tottenford Heats, still the reigning champion, are a little disappointing. After 11 matches, they are in the relegation zone, and that is not where you would expect a champion. FC Inferno on the other hand, are doing a lot better, as they are the number 3 after the first half of the season has been played. And that is exactly where you would expect them. However, there is more to this situation than just league table positions, as everyone who paid a little attention will have noticed that Mark has traded all his stars for talented youth. They might have been a little too young to bring TH many points in the first half, but in the second half of the season, TH has become only better. I don't think that Mark has ever been worried for this season, and this match shows exactly why: even though Marco fielded a strong team, FI was not strong enough to beat TH. In fact, they even lost 12-9 and that result was fair. TH climb out of the relegation zone, and jump to position nr. 7, only 3 points behind AP. Marco, on the other hand, sees FI fall at least 1 position, and if TB win their match, it will be even 2 positions, and they are 7 points now behind CA, the current leader of the table.

But FI don't fall 2 places, as The Boelewieten were not able to win this week. In their home match against Lisbon United, Jeroen played another strong ZD, over 130 EMP, and that was almost 7 EMP more than the CP that Nuno played with LU. Enough for 1 smother shot, and that was scored: 1-0 for TB. However, LU was awarded a penalty, and since they did not miss that either, both teams shared the points: 1-1. The bad luck that LU had with the red card for DM DeGrote (which caused a loss of 6.38 EMP, so that would have mad both teams equally strong), was compensated by the good luck with the penalty. So, taking everything into consideration, this draw can be called nothing else than a fair result. Now, for LU, this point in a tough away-game can be celebrated, as it is another point in their battle against relegation, and brings LU closer to IQ, EW and OC, who lost their matches this week. While for TB, it must feel like losing 2 points, as they fail to benefit, in a week that AA and FI lose points. Looking at the top 5 teams: we have seen CA, AA, and TB draw, and FI lose, while only JG won their match, so without a doubt, JG is the big winner this week.
