SAEFL SEASON 10 WEEK 15

DIVISION 3 GAMES

Smoking Guns has been the number last of the table for almost the entire season, while Fanatics United have been leading the table for most of the first half of this season. We could see the number of gravestones increase week after week. But in 2 weeks, SG have turned div 3 upside down. Last week, they already managed to steal a point in the away game against FU, and this week they even manage to beat FU, so for sure, there will be no SG gravestone in the FU graveyard this season. Sure, SG needed a Grudge for this result, and were lucky to see FU's CM Un leave the field with a red card, and still create just a little less EMP than their opponent, but the fact that SG played with a NSL 10 GK against the NSL 9 for FU did it: 7-4. Well, I wonder how Brian will feel about his title chances, if he can't beat the number last even once, in 2 matches.... J

Blue Storm FC against Adelaide Kickers is a match in the bottom half of the table, and looking at the league table, I guess you could say that if BS lose this match, or if this match ends in a draw, they are out of the race for the playoffs. For AK, to be honest, I think that they are already out of the race, but a loss in this match would make that an almost sure thing. And well, since the result of this game is indeed a 10-2 victory for BS, I guess that if I were David, I would start thinking about next year already, as this season there is only honour left to play for (mind you: that is important too of course!), and you can never think too many steps ahead. Bryan does a good job at keeping on clutching that straw, and in that effort to stay in the race for those playoffs, this victory was the only outcome that he needed.

After FU drew their match last week, Defrosted Tunafish were leading the table on their own. And since we already saw that FU lost this weeks match, DT could increase their lead by beating Aros VSK in their home game. AV is the number 6 on the table, so Claudio of course knew that there are easier matches than this one. In fact, Christer even played a boost to try and steal a point from Battlefield FC. But in spite of that noble effort, it was not good enough to trouble DT. With a solid WP, the Tuna's didn't even have the best performance in their league, but it was enough to be a lot better than AV, and that showed, not just in EMP, but also in chances, and goals. The 22-9 was a fair result (even the red cards were divided fair: 1 each, so no complaints about that), and DT stay on the nr. 1 position, 5 points ahead of the competition. On the other hand, AV have to watch out for their playoff position, as VA is on a winning streak lately, and is catching up fast!

While DT is running away from the rest very sneaky, the competition is losing points. And when they play against each other, you know for sure that more points will be lost. This week, we see a clash between the numbers 4 and 5 on the table, when Deo Volente and Trav Spoodle meet. So, at least 3 points will be lost in the top of the table. It turned out to be a very exciting game. Both Otto and Travis did what they do best: Otto played a solid CP, while Travis chose his attacking WP. TS had the best of it, actually. Not only did they put more NSL on the pitch, but they were also better in EMP. That of course led to more chances for TS: 42 against 35 for DV. So, under other circumstances, TS would probably have won this match. But Travis was unlucky to see his GK leave the field with an injury, already in the 2nd minute of the game. His replacement GK, Maida, did his best, but with only NSL 7, it was not enough to stop DV from scoring. That injury was what decided this game, as DV took the 3 points with a 22-19 victory. Otto is lucky again, if he would have lost this match he would have lost touch with the top 4 team. Now he stays in the slipstream. DT is still 10 points ahead, and that might be too much to overcome, but who knows what else is possible. And of course, that also goes for Travis and TS, because in spite of this unfortunate loss, they are still 1 points ahead of DV.

In the comment to a previous match, I already mentioned it: Vitesse Arnhem are on a winning streak. Since Wouter has stopped missing the NMR deadlines, VA is doing better and better every week, and no kidding, they are even heading towards a playoff spot. At the moment, they are on the 7th position, so those playoffs are coming closer every week. The Falcons are the number 8, chasing VA, and after they lost to VA last week, they actually have to win this week to stay in the race, or the gap will become too big (as it is already 5 points now). But apparantly, it looks like Wouter made the deadline again, and there is no stopping VA. Nik even tried it with a Grudge, but it appeared to be in vain, although the red card for S Walsh wasn't any helpful of course. VA was better, but in fact they weren't that much better. Not as much better as you might think when looking at the result: 13-2. Wouter was even lucky that his 9.5 GK was performing a million times better than his NSL 10 opponent. But in spite of that, the win for VA was not a surprise. We already saw AV lose their match earlier, and that means that VA jumps to position nr. 6! They are 8 points ahead of FA with this win, so for them, it will be really hard to be in the playoffs at the end of the season, but hey, there are still 10 matches left so you never know what happens.

Clive's Fantastic Eleven is the number 3 on the table, and after we have already seen FU and TS, the numbers 2 and 4, lose points, FE could benefit by winning their own game against the Speedsters. The Speedsters are on the bottom half of the table, and I don't think their chances on reaching the playoffs are big, but still, that doesn't mean that this match will be easy for FE. Magnus in fact put a nice team on the pitch, and SS performed well, and since they had a NSL 10 GK against "only" 9 for FE, who knows what surprise had been possible. But Magnus was unlucky to see his AS Schumacher leave the field with a red card already in the first half of the game. That cost him some NSL, and although FE still would have had more EMP, the difference wouldn't have been as big. But maybe that is just the difference between a top 3-team and a team at the bottom. I don't know the various goal differences by heart, but with this win, FE might have very well passed FU on the table on goal difference. Which means that although the leader of the table walks away from the rest a little, the battle for the nr. 2 position gets more exciting every week!
