SAEFL GREATS – BETWEEN THE STICKS

There have been a number of great SAEFL keepers over the years.  But which keeper gets your vote as THE quintessential stopper in the league over the last 11 years.

For your amusement, below are a list of the contenders for this prestigious title, and some basic information on their achievements:

GK Grolsch AA

Grolsch was the original top AA keeper.  Playing for several seasons in a side that threatened to dominate the league for many a year, he ruled his defenders with a steely determination, and ensured many a clean sheet.

Although AA are today known for their steely defence, in the early seasons, Edwin had a penchant for ONE and other fairly attacking formations, so the burly stopper still had his work cut out to stop the opposition from infringing on his net.

Final league and cup record: 69 appearances; 22 clean sheets

GK The Cat in the Hat TJ/NW

The Cat in the Hat has to go down as one of the legends of SAEFL.  Drafted by The Jazz, the Cat was soon leaping to the defence of his club, sealing promotion at one point with TJ.  Unfortunately, he could not keep the side up; but later on in his career, he was traded to Mike and Noshaki, where the plaudits really started to rain down on him.  With a stronger defence, The Cat was able to occasionally have 40 winks - but he was still wide-awake to chances from opposition keepers.

Final record: 95 games; 23 clean sheets

GK Jay CA

Jay was a one man club - a CA man.  And he was at the club at its inception - the point at which Catbel were strongest (apart from, perhaps, this season).

Like other teams at this time, CA favoured an attacking style, which meant Jay was constantly on his toes.  Still he managed to do enough, and stay around long enough, to make the keeper short-list.

Final record; 67 games; 19 clean sheets

GK J. Ramone OC

Ramone was another one-club man - a rarity in these transfer-filled days.  With OC from the league's inception, he had to work his socks off to keep Oaklake in the first division as the club got older and older.  In the end, with me in charge, he just failed to do it - but by this stage his cult hero status had been well and truly cemented.

Final record; 72 games; 15 clean sheets

GK J. Mill HD/SH/AP/NW

One man that could not be accused of staying at one club - J. Mill.  However, although he did not stick at a single club during his career, it was a really long, long career.

In fact, Mill was so good, he stuck at 10 NSL his whole career!  Quite amazing.

Mill played most games for his first club - SH (or, in those early days, HD).  But although he was a superb stopper, clean sheets were hard to come by.  Little changed when JM left for a short stint at AP; but the goals really dried up when he replaced The Cat in the Hat as NW's stopper.  The end of his career was quite stupendous - 18 clean sheets in his last 41 games, as Noshaki continued to be a force in the league.  Will any keeper beat his game record?  I doubt it.

Final record; 120 games; 39 clean sheets

GK S. Davidson DL

Davidson, unlike Mills, did not stick around as a 10 NSL keeper his whole career.  However, DL stuck with him long enough for him to play a significant number of games for the club, and helped the Legends to several promotion-pushes.

Final record; 73 games; 18 clean sheets

GK Slam AR/AS/ES

Although Slam was a strong keeper at his peak, he primarily makes the list for one reason - he was the first keeper to be sold in SAEFL for one million pounds - an unheard of sum for a stopper at the time.

After moving to AS, Slam had good success, before ending his career at ES, a pale shadow of his former self, but with plenty of cash in the bank from that big money move.

Final record; 59 games; 11 clean sheets

GK Java TH

Java joined TH just as they started to make waves in the league, and his no-nonsense style helped the club to many successes.

Final record; 61 games; 18 clean sheets

GK S. Topperr GU

Topperr was one of those lucky keepers that was helped out by a rock defence.  GU's back-line has, over the years, perhaps only been surpassed by AA's defence (after Grolsch left).  This enabled the Grammar keeps to have a fair number of days off.  In the end, he just failed to make it to the 100 club - but his legacy will live on, despite Topperr ending his career in the second flight.

Final record; 87 games; 31 clean sheets

GK C. Kirkland TB

Kirky was TB's keeper for the about 4 seasons, earning some rave reviews, and catching the eye of the AA manager on more than one occasion.  His final record was impressive, keeping clean sheets 41% of the time.

Final record; 56 games; 23 clean sheets

GK M. Cough JG/CA

The only man that comes anywhere near matching the record of Mill, in terms of minutes on the pitch, is Clough.  An ever present in the CA side after moving from JG early in his career, the lad got to the 100 mark just before his career ended.  He will not be forgotten at Catbel, but despite his longevity, he won very few awards during his tenure in goal.

Final record; 102 games; 32 clean sheets

GK B. Lathouwers JG

Lath was a strong, athletic, attractive, clever individual.  Something that Bart will never be.  Nevertheless, despite inheriting his father's genes, BLJr was an absolute star for Jazz as the club started to challenge the likes of AA and NW for top honours in the league.

Final record; 60 games; 24 clean sheets

GK S. Haffner OC

Haff has been a quality shot-stopper for many a year at OC (he still lives on today).  However, despite his top performances for Oaklake, he will go down in history for having the most red cards of any keeper in the league.  He's already had a couple in Season 11!

Final record; 79 games; 20 clean sheets

GK Jones FI/SH

The youngest in the bunch of number 1s, Jones is still going strong at SH after moving from FI.  He may not reach the likes of Mills in terms of the stats game, but he could well get to the hallowed 80+ games target with another season under his belt

Final record; 61 games; 18 clean sheets

The Verdict

So, who is the top keeper?  For me, it has to be Mill.  His outstanding performances, week in, week out, aided by that 120 game spell, surely makes him the number one choice to be my keeper in the SAEFL hall of fame side.

Cat makes it on to the bench for one of the best moves in SAEFL - joining NW when they were at a peak.

Division 1 is tough this year! I go reading the MR and it seems no one deserves to be relegated!!! Teams that can field 100 NSL are on the red area! How is that possible? This week we will have one of these critical games, facing NW that is currently sinking to divison 2 despite a strong side. Due to cup efforts, we are not playing all starters but hopefully our boys can do a good job.

Talking about the cup, we got a 6 goals lead and although it cost us a grudge, it was the right decision! AR is strong and definitely can surprise us. We will make sure we defend our position.

CUP COMMENTS

This is the premiere of the new look IQ.  Aging was very good for us.  It also marks the premiere of our first freak; M.Hamm.  It might be easier to stay in Div 1.  Unfortuanately, it also means the end of season aging may not be so kind.  Frankly, I have 2 retiring players which is also helping us temporarily.

LEAGUE

5 red and 5 yellow card in 4 cup matches!!!  Didn't the refs have their brand for breakfast?  The average time of the ejections was 21 minutes so they had significant impact in NSL.  Except for one game with a red card for each team, they arguably cancelled out.

Kudos to WH Ronaldo who shot a perfect 2 goals for 2 shots.  And AM Hornline was 75% on 4 shots.  My first freak was disappointing in her first outing, Hamm only taking 2 shots and missing one of those.  The red card is a bummer since I'd like to have more than a 2 goal differential going in to the next round.

Crazy we are, with 36 team around and hoping to get a player from the transferlist, never has TB gone this high for bidding on a young talent.

Mabe once, we must think at the time we had a transferlistplayer, think it was DS Waltercapio, who is now a freak playing for AA, and which Van Poppel traded away

and has still some pain in his stomage and almost opened a bottum of Absint, lucky for him Bart was visiting him and saved TB's manager.

Well, lets found out if we got some talent!

DIVISION 2

Adirondak Renegades

Adirondak Press (AP): A great start to the second half of the season!

Manager Fulmer (MF): Definitely! An away win against a quality opponent. That match shows the growth and development of AR. DS came at us hard. It seemed like they had a grudge against us. But our youngsters were able to prevail.

AP: Who stood out in your mind?

MF: MF H Ellraiser! We brought him in after the trade of Pulmao to hold down the area behind our attackers. He not only was fantastic in that role, but he finished all 3 scoring chances. Pretty important in a 6-3 match.

AP: H Ellraiser is one of your older players at age 26. How about the youngsters?

MF: 21 yo GK Evans played very well, saving 6 of 9 chances. While there are still some areas in which he needs to improve, he is a tremendous talent and should be a very important part of our team for a long time.

AP: What about AM N GoodmanJr in his first match with the top 11?

MF: The rapid improvement in training translated very well to the match. He had a very solid match, and fit in very well with our attack. He only finished 1 of 4 chances, which we can work on. I was very pleased to see him create 4 chances.

AP: AR are now up to seventh place in the table, missing out on the last playoff spot by goal differential. Do you expect the recent hot streak to continue?

MF: You obviously haven't looked at the upcoming fixtures. We have a cup match away against a very strong FI side. They are having a very good season in Division 1, but are probably out of the championship run, so I expect them to really come after us. Then we have an away match against EU. That will end our league winning streak. It will be good to be home again.

Well last week was a good start to the second half of the season.  It is always nice to start out with a win.  It was a pretty big one but when their GK got a red card, I guess that can be pretty expected.  Now we are out of the relegation zone, which is a good thing I guess but we still should be farther up in the standings.  The only problem is that our team does not have much depth so we do have to rest a couple of our key players this week but that should not make that much of a difference so hopefully we will win this week and keep on moving up in the standings.

Stannington Historical

SH Press

"SH was extremely jubilant with their solid victory over ES. It was a match that featured non-stop end to end action throughout the entire 90 min.SH Manager Lear said," It was sure nice to get our 1st win of the season. The maturing of our Kiddies Corp finally paid off. We used a tactic that took advantage of our speed and agility upfront and it also put relentless pressure on the ES 'keeper. My hat is off to the ES 'keeper because if it hadn't been for him the margin of victory would have been much larger. Our 'keeper S. Tained, a 20 yo, came up big for us in his first full 90 min. in net. He is going to be one of the stars in the SAEFL."

Well, our match this week in against a dangerous NH squad. I don't like the looks of this NH squad. They have a very good starting eleven that has the potential to give most teams fits. However, with the versatility and agility of our lineup we are going to use a tactic that should put them back a notch. It is going to be a good match regardless and I am sure SH can come away with the three points.

The Jazz

TJ came back from they away game at GU,s  home ground Olymic Park in front of a crowd of just under 30,000 with a 1-1 draw. TJ manger was not very happy with the ref for giving a last minute penalty to GU which looked a very harsh giving PK with players J Allencar and B Gaza3rd getting booked for saying to the ref how much was you paid.

This week TJ face top of the table DL At the Colosseum who are looking very good for the div title this season, this will be a hard fought game which the toons are hoping for a point. Depending on the results this week it could be a tight race in the play off position. Also with SH getting they first win of the season could they done the great escape?.

DIVISION 3

Adelaide Kickers

Time to blood some youngsters

Looks like it is time to get some youngsters ready for next season.  In the return leg last week against Blue Storm, the Kickers crashed to a 10-2 loss.

"I'm very dissappointed in the lads.  I asked them just after the game why they played so badly and was informed that they were all home in bed early to prepare for it." David Thomas said.

SB: "That is unusual for the guys.  Was it in the same bed?"

DT: "I asked them that, but it was not to be.  When we have played well this season the night before consisted of late night drinking sessions and promiscous activity, whether with each other, escorts or just girls they pick up at the pubs and clubs.  With none of that apparently happening last week it shows that I may have to make it mandatory."

SB: "Picking up girls at the pubs and clubs is okay, but you condone the use of Escorts?"

DT: "Each to his own.  Heck if it makes them play better them sure, I'm all for it."

SB: "And each other.  Is the team made up of homosexual and bisexual players?"

DT: "There are a number of players like that but most of the guys are straight.  There sexuality is not a problem.  All players have regular blood tests so the league and the opposition teams have nothing to worry about.  In fact it might work to our advantage.  Knowing that our players may have STD's might keep them away from us and then we can score plenty of goals.'

Well, it looks like this could be why the team is playing so badly.  Too busy worrying about the lifestyle that goes with the playing and not some much about what is happening on the pitch.  I'm sure a lot of fans will react to this and revolt against the team.  Guess we'll just have to wait and see.

Is it just me, or did everyone play a not so good team last week, everyone but the team against me.

I think I am going to have to come back from holiday, because I see things are not going well.

I have given instructions for this weeks team, but will not be back until next week some time.

P.S. Bringing some girls that are tuff enough to date the team members back with me, if they are still alive when I get back and after I am done with them.

Fantastic eleven

Smoking Guns

Smoking Guns finally got their first home win after 12 games. Another home game this week against FA and lets see if they can make it two out of two. The fans have taken well to the new manager, Monty Rukoro. But it remains to be seen whether he can deliver the goods. This weeks game will be an ultimate test that he has the tactical know-how and insight to take SG to the next level. It is still premature to talk about promotion from Division 3, but we will wait and see how SG fare in the last 50m sprint to the line.
