SAEFL SEASON 11 WEEK 16

DIVISION 2 GAMES

MR and GU. Two of the big guns of SAEFL who may have contrasting futures - for where as GU are looking to promote, MR fans must be wary that their side are perilously close to the Division 3 trap door. And that trap door just widened a little more after this game - won convincingly by Grammar on performance, but only by a goal margin of 1, thanks to the heroics by home team keeper Given, who continues to amaze. P. Neill's sending off didn't help MR, but their performance was sub-standard (BC with only 3 players benefiting from the tactic was perhaps not a wise choice), and improvements will need to be made at Melchester if any sort of turnaround is to be made.

SAEFL SEASON 11 WEEK 16

The Legends have lived up to their name this season, striking fear into every opponent to date, and picking up maximum points - 33 out of 33 (not bad :)). Could DL keep the run up against a TJ side that are looking for a play off spot? Well, this was quite some game. Legends pretty much dominated for large spells, their WP side ripping into opponents TJ's backline. However, The Jazz had a masterful player in GK Mouse, and no matter how many times DL came forward, Mouse would stop their goalscoring exploits. This kept Jazz in the game right up until the last moments, when MF M. Idden miss-timed a shot off his left thigh - wrong footing Mouse, and the ball dribbled into the back of the net. 17-16. What a game. Legends take the game, Mouse takes the plaudits.

SAEFL SEASON 11 WEEK 16

England U21s must feel really annoyed about the way things are going this season - for no matter how well they perform, DL perform just that bit better. Mind you, their fans will not worry if promotion is sealed at the end of the season, and that goal was one step nearer completion after this very well fought win against Don's AR, who have come on a bundle since mid-season. EU showed Don ultimate respect with a Boost and a strong WH team. In the end this was too much for AR's defensive line-up - and three shots flew past Evans to secure the 3-0 win. EU continue their quest for the holy-grail of Division 1 footy. AR cannot take Division 2 safety for granted � yet.

The Historicals have been marooned at the foot of Division 2 all season, and are surely heavy odds-on favourites for the drop. So although NH have not been playing perfect football of late, an away wins was on the cards. Or was it? If the Historicals have not been performing, it has not been down to a lack of talent, based on this performance. 123 EMP from just 89 NSL is quality stuff. Far too much for NH, who collapsed, allowing the home side a well-deserved 12-2 win. A grudge from Stannington may have aided the scoreline, but one team was going to win whatever the case - and that team have all of a sudden given themselves a squeak of avoiding the drop - which is one reason for Newton to be concerned.

ES and PN were separated by 3 league places, but only 23 points, before this game - so an even contest was likely to face fans turning up at the Dome. And an even contest was what resulted. WH v WP. 94 v 90 NSL. 112 v 116 EMP. This allowed PN a one or two shots on goal - but with The Storm having a 10 NSL GK to PN's 9, a home win was on the cards. Or not, as it turned out. Aussie couldn't handle being captain and shot stopper, and his abilities crumbled, saving just 8 from 18 attempts, to his opponents 11 from 15. Ouch! As an extra note, had ES played another individual as captain, the result could have been oh so different.

With the win by SH (see above), AS knew that nothing more than a win would ensure that a healthy gap was maintained between themselves and their 12th placed rival. DS have been having a fine season, and they would have wanted a win to secure their top 6 status. A win which was forthcoming thanks to an excellent performance from Foxe and co. So often in the past, the Scientists have under-performed, and DS would no doubt have lost this type of game in the past. AS could point to the sending off of Karnack as a turning point in the game, but DS were already home and dry by then.
