CUP GAMES : Quarter Finals LEG 1

The reigning cup winners, FC Inferno, is the first team we see in these quarter finals. They play against Adirondak Renegades, who may not have a team as great as FI, but they still have good team that might be dangerous, especially when you consider that they receive a 5% bonus for being a div 2 team. That is why Marco apparantly did not take any chances whatsoever, and played a Grudge to increase his chances on reaching the semi-finals. That turned out to be a smart decision, especially because it worked. Both Marco and Don played ONE with their teams, but FI was by far the better team, also because of the grudge played. Both teams saw a player leave the field too early, so that levelled things (the AR player left earlier, but he was no bonus player, so even that was levelled). In the end, all this led to 28 chances for FI against 19 chances for AR. FI also had a better GK, who as a result of that had a better save rating, and that resulted in a 13-7 victory for FI. It's a huge step towards reaching the semi-finals, but it's also not impossible for AR to overcome a 6 goals difference in a home game. So now, Don has to decide whether he wants to go for it all the way, and try to accomplish that, while Marco has to be careful not to think too easy, in spite of this nice win, as he's not there yet, and anything is still possible.

SAEFL SEASON 11 WEEK 16

The match between InterQuartile Rangers and Excelsior Warren promised to be a totally different game, compared to the previous one. It's not the reigning champion against a div 2 team, no, we are talking about the numbers 9 and 10 of div 1 here. In other words: IQ and EW are expected to be almost equally good. Of course it would make a difference if one of these both teams would go all the way for the cup, and if the other one would let it go, and give all priority to the league. That could be possible, as being in 9th and 10th position, both Terry and Simon have to watch out for the relegation dog. However, that was not the case. Terry and Simon both went for it, but without going all the way: they both saved their boosts or grudges, not knowing yet of those might come in even more handy in the semi-finals, or maybe in the battle against relegation. They did play their best teams though, and so the difference between them remained very small. IQ was, also because of the home advantage, the slightly better team here. Even in spite of a red card for CF Wambach. That resulted in 18 chances, against 17 for EW. Since EW played with a GK that was 0.5 NSL better than IQ's, it remained exciting. However, IQ's Ferreira had a top performance, and so the advantage remained on IQ's side: 9-7. However, this win may be for IQ, but nothing's decided yet, as next week EW have the opportunity to set things right in their home game. While IQ of course will defend this small lead. Will Terry and Simon use a boost or grudge in the return game, in an effort to make it to the semi-finals? To be continued......

SAEFL SEASON 11 WEEK 16

Both NoShaKi WC'98 and Tottenford Heats know what it is to win the cup. Both Mike and Mark are experienced managers, and in fact they both have won the cup, not that many seasons ago. So, when the confrontation NW-TH was drawn for the quarterfinals, it must have been a disappointment for both managers, as they knew this one would be tough. Last season, these two teams (who also ended 1 and 2 in the league) met in the semi-finals (NW won that, by the way), this season it's at an earlier stage that one of these great cupfighting teams has to leave the competition. Both NW and TH aren't doing that great in the league (for which rebuilding is their excuse, and that's a good excuse of course), so the cup is what they have left to achieve success this season. Therefor, it will be no surprise that Mike played a Grudge. Sure, a grudge that you play now can't be played in the semi's, but hey, can it get any tougher than TH? So, it's a wise move from Mike to play that grudge now. Mark, on the other hand, gambled, and left out a grudge (although he played a boost). Both teams played a very strong team of course, but the grudge for NW made a significant difference: NW was more than 10 EMP better than TH, in spite of the red card for CM Nietzsche. However, since the NW tactics, ZD, is defensive, it resulted in only 2 chances by smother shots. Mike was very unlucky, as he saw both Chevalric and Torres miss that chance, and so the match ends as it started: 0-0. Mark gambled, and he should not have complained if NW had won this game with a small victory, but in this case he was lucky enough to get away with it. In the return, I am sure that Mark will play his grudge in the return, in TH's home match. That will leave him 2 grudges for the semi finals. It also means that he is the favorite to make it to those semi-finals, as he did not lose his away game, and has a home game left. On the other hand, he might be favorite, but not by far. NW may not have won this one, but that doesn't mean it will be easy to beat them. If NW play another grudge in the return, it will be difficult. Mark can play ZD with TH, but in that case, Mike might surprise him by playing WP, and that could do good for NW's chances. On the other hand, if TH plays CP, and NW doesn't play ZD, there will be quite a number of chances on both sides, and it is up to the GK's form what the result in the end will be. There's also a chance that both teams play very safe, and that we have another result. In that case, the match could be decided by penalties. And maybe even during the 90 minutes. Anyway, this game too has not been decided yet, and the return cup round promises to be very exciting!!!

SAEFL SEASON 11 WEEK 16

The last cup match this week is another interesting one: Newton Heath, who are known for the fact that they are a cupfighting team, meet the Jazz Greats, a top team that has tasted the victory of winning the cup, a couple of years ago. Both Robert and Bart played with a strong team, and Bart was clever enough to play a boost, in an effort to make up for NH's 5% bonus, being a div 2 team. That idea was good, and it might have worked, if it weren't for the red card for S. T.Janssen. Of course, it's always a lousy feeling if one of your players is sent off, but it's even lousier when that already happens in the 16th minutes, and on top of that, it's lousiest when that happens to your freak player, the one that had to EMP 18.25 this match, but only came to perform 3.25 instead. That is a difference of 15 EMP, and that is exactly what made that JG lost this game. True, when you add those 15 EMP to the current JG EMP, you would see that the difference between NH and JG still would be less than 3! However, when you consider that JG played with a NSL 10 GK, and NH with a NSL 8 GK, chances are that JG might have won this. At least, that's what you would expect. But just look at their save ratings: NH's goalie saved 7 out of 15 shots, while JG's goalie saved 12 out of 25 shots. That is just below 50% for both of them, so in fact their was no difference in the GK performance for both teams. That in the end led to a 13-8 victory for NH, who have a nice shot at reaching the semi-finals with this, once again! But on the other hand, don't underestimate JG, they have a strong team, they play at home in the return match, and maybe, just maybe, they can keep their nerves in that match and end the match with 11 players. That would make them a lot stronger than this week. But would it be enough to overcome this defeat and reach the semi-finals, instead of NH? We will wait and see!
