PRESS REPORT

WHO WAS THE TOP CB IN SAEFL? – YOU DECIDE

CB is one of those positions that most sides use during a season.  In an era where ZD and CP is king, they may not be a commodity in the way that a FB or AS is – but they are usually solid and dependable, and can wrack up games.  One problem with CB is that they tend to be in the firing line where cards are concerned.

So, who will you rank as the top CB?  Remember it’s the 1,2,3 that we are looking for.  All managers that send their best 3 to nathanfossey@gmail.com will generate 15k for their club.  Here’s that all important list:

M. Matteo (MR) From season 1 to season 7 – 105 games, 1 international, never sent off

We start with one of the early guys.  MR have not been in the best form over the last few seasons, but in their early days, they were a confident, free scoring WP side.  Matteo, however, was their rock at the back.

A truly nice guy, he propped MR up from the first season, starting life as an 8NSL player.  He eventually retired after 7 glorious seasons, not having been sent off, and managing to compile over a century of games.  Very, very impressive.

Hoegaarden (AA/PN) – season 1 to season 6 – 56 games, 1 sending off

Like MR, AA were one of the big guns in SAEFL in the early days.  But while AA are probably best known for their defensive performances these days, in their formative years, the Alcies were more of a ONE team.  So Hoe, as he was known to the fans, had plenty of work to do.  Only blotted his copy-book once.  Had AA been a defensive outfit, he would surely have played more than the 56 games he managed for AA and, before retirement, PN.

M.Miller (JG/DS/FI/DS) – season 1 to season 7 – 102 games, 3 internationals, never sent off

You don’t get many SAEFL players that play for one side twice, but Miller was so good, DS just couldn’t resist.  A starter from the beginning, Miller was soon elevated to the level of 10 NSL, where he anchored a DS side that never could quite reach the top.

Marky could never be blamed for any problems at the club, however, and by the time he eventually re-joined his 2nd love, the CB had clocked up 102 games – with no early baths.

C. Borgman (FI/AA/JG/AP) – season 1 to season 7 – 92 games, 1 international, never sent off

Borgman was one of those CBs that seemed to float around the pitch un-noticed by all around him, including by fellow managers.  Perhaps overshadowed by similarly named DS Borgsen, Borgy mark2 was none-the-less a very solid player for 7 seasons, starting off as a 7.75 performer before developing even further.

Despite never being labelled a star, he was very useful for every manager that took him on, and surely he deserved more than his one international cap.

S. Oliseh (AS/NW/EW/JG/ES/NW/IQ) – season 1 to season 6 – 70 games, 3 internationals, 1 sending off

OK, fair enough, not many players these days are one player teams,  But 6 teams in 7 spells?  For some reason, managers just never got comfortable with Oliseh, despite the CB being a more than good performer for every one of his sides.  His international side obviously felt different, and his 3 appearances are testament to his talent.

S. Boshier (PN/AR/FI) – season 1 to season 8 – 112 games, 6 internationals, never sent off

If the word legend can be banded around SAEFL, there are few players that are worthy of that accolade over Bolshy.  In 8 seasons, the stopper managed to display his full range of  silky passing and crunching challenges.

Not to say that SB was not fair – he was never sent off in 112 games – and how many players can say that?  Add 6 internationals to his portfolio (he would have had more with luck), and you can see that Bolshier is a player that most managers will take a second look at when picking their 1,2,3.

B. Hill (CA/OC/CA) – season 3 to season 8 – 69 games, 4 internationals, never sent off

Jet, as his team-mates at CA (x2) and OC called him, was another one of those players that blended in to the background – especially at a quality CA team.  His glory days were certainly from season 4 to season 6, and in 7 and 8 he was never quite the player of old.  Still, nearly 70 games and 4 internationals prove that Hill was one, if not the best Catbel CB ever.

S. Potts (MR) – season 5 to season 9 – 52 games, 2 internationals, sent off twice

When Matteo was coming into the twilight stage of his career, Potty Potts came to try and help shore up a MR defence that leaked more than most.  He was not always a nice man – his two red cards show this – but he was committed and never let the side down – despite not being a 10 NSL player for very long.  His career was marred when Melchester eventually were relegated to division 2.

J. Anegrund (TH/AA/AP) – season 3 to season 9 – 79 games, 2 internationals, never sent off

Another top line centre back, Anegrund started life as very much a mortal defender (in fact as a 4.5 NSL CB).  But this is one of those cases that you should never sack your low NSL youth players, because by season 5 had began, Ane was really motoring in a TH side that was starting to go places.  A short lived stint at AA (one of many for CBs in this list) was not the greatest time of his career – that came when AP took him on, and he really helped the Apocs move forward.  Never sent off, I could well imagine that AP would have that much needed second tactic had this lad been around today.

W. Turkey (AA/PN/OC/DS) – season 2 to season 10 – 104 games, 2 internationals, never sent off

Wild Turkey.  One of my biggest mistakes in terms of sales – and one of those players that just wouldn’t give up.  9 full seasons in SAEFL says it all – that’s at least 16 years (or from 19 to 35).  Drafted as a weak 5.25, AA eventually sold Turkey when it looked as if he would probably peter out.  But boy was I wrong J  For PN, OC and DS, Christmas usually came early when the Wildman was in the side.

In fact, for about 6 seasons, Wild was 9 NSL or more.  That’s the kind of long-term consistency and quality that every side in this league would love to get their hands on!  Only 2 internationals perhaps suggests that Turks was not a great EMPer like a Mills, but he served his 4 clubs superbly over 104 games, and he is already being missed.

Nesta (NW) – season 1 to season 9/10 – 124 games, 6 internationals, sent off four times including once in an international game

Let’s put this into perspective.  Only 2 CBs have ever freaked.  One is still in the league.  One has departed for retirement.  The latter is Nesta.  Plucked from NW’s youth policy in season 1 as a 5.25NSL CB, his rise to stardom took a few seasons.  But by season 4, he was showing his superb EMPing form as a high NSL player.

And then, the jump. After 1 static season as a 9.5 NSL CB (AA tried to broker a deal for him but got cold feet when he stalled between seasons 4 and 5), season 6 saw the holy grail reached – 10.25 NSL.

Nesta was the rock on which NW built their side.  And when the likes of Juninho, Nartov, Berlinnin, Djordic, Salas, Sheringham, Ardiles and Rowbottom joined, a super power was born.  But Nesta was there first – he was the leader.

Season 9 saw the big man reach the end of his career.  And what a career.  The stats say it all J  Even the international sending off adds to the legend.

D. Mills (EU/AA) – season 3 to season 10 – 127 games, 9 internationals, never sent off

But if you think Nesta is nailed on the number 1 CB spot, think again.  Danny Mills was a man that transformed SAEFL in so many ways.  He started life at EU as a raw 6 NSL lad.  But his talent was obvious, and soon, AA came sniffing.

Now this seems mad today, but when AA paid 800k for Mills as a 10 22 CB, there were massive rumblings around other managers in the league.  800k, for a centre back?  Madness!

But the move was far from madness, as with the likes of Borgsen, Sylfar, Hoegaarden, Catenaccio, Sammer, Ward, Turkey, Cannavaro, Sam and of course the legendary Bart Simpson, AA build the most dominant defence that SAEFL had ever seen.

The stats say it all:

q       Season 6 - Top Defensive teams in Division 1 – Alcohol Anonymous – Total Games 30 – Total Goals Conseeded 45 (only 15 goals in 22 league games) – Rate 1.5 per game.

q       Season 7 - Top Defensive teams in Division 1 – Alcohol Anonymous – Total Games 28 – Total Goals Conseeded 52 – Rate 1.86 per game.

q       Season 8 - Top Defensive teams in Division 1 – Alcohol Anonymous – Total Games 30 – Total Goals Conseeded 21 (only 9 goals in 22 league games) – Rate 0.7 per game

q       Season 9 - Top Defensive teams in Division 1 – Alcohol Anonymous – Total Games 26 – Total Goals Conseeded 35 – Rate 1.35 per game.

That’s only 153 goals in 114 games – or 1.32 goals per game.  And Mills was involved with around 80 of those games.

127 – he has played more games than any CB in the league.  9 internationals – ditto.  It’s all about quality.  Never sent off to boot.  Can you decide between the freak and the he may as well have been a freak?

J. Carragher_1 (EU) – season 2 to season 10 – 111 games, 3 internationals, never sent off

Not to discount this lad.  For while Mills soon moved on from EU to AA, a player that was formed as a 7NSL defender in season 2 – at a similar time to Millsey – Carragher stayed loyal to England U21s.

And boy did he reward the team big style.  A 10 9.5+ player for most of his career, he played 90 minutes after 90 minutes for EU.  But despite his quality, he could never earn the gold and other rewards that his career surely deserved. And 3 internationals – well, for a man that played 111 games.  Robbed J

S. Ward (NW/OC/AA/DL) – season 3 to season 10 – 74 games, 4 internationals, sent off an incredible 7 times!

Wardy was perhaps the greatest hard man CB of all time in SAEFL.  And did I like him!  I took him to OC and to AA, knowing that he could scare the life out of any forward he wanted to.

A slow burner that grew gradually to 10 NSL, Wardy perhaps didn’t get the games that he might have because he was at a club with, well, see Mills.  But in those games, he really did put himself about.

This led Wardy to being sent off 7 times in his 74 games – that’s pretty much twice a season.  Maybe this is the reason why he didn’t play more than those 74 games!

L. Jones (EW/AR) – season 2 to season 10 – 111 games, 5 internationals, 3 red cards and 16 yellow cards

Another man that surely deserves serious consideration for a top 3 slot is L. Jones.  For the vast majority of his 9 season career, he pitted his wits alongside fellow defender Carragher in the 2nd division – but this time at EW.

He wasn’t afraid to chuck himself around, and was DPed on a number of occasions, including 3 reds.  But Even though his star wained in season 9, he came back strongly in the final year of his long career, when a move to AR saw him jump back up to 9.75 due to a 1.5 boost.

With 5 international caps on his shelf, Jonesy must deserve a second glance.

W. Campbell (GU) – season 4 to present – 109 games, 7 internationals, 17 yellows and 6 red cards

From the old to the new (well, if you call a 35 year old new J).  W. Campbell was a 21 year old 8 NSL youngster when GU paid the pricey sum of 412k for him in season 4.  High hopes were pinned on the lad, and Campbell has not let his teammates down since.

A stonewall defender, Campbell soon rose to be one of the stars of a GU side that included the likes of McGoo.  2nd only to AA in those middle years in terms of goals conceded, in the end he could not stop the club from relegating into the second tier of SAEFL – but never mind that – his quality remains.

The only CB currently playing that has netted over 100 games, and with a mammoth number of yellow and red cards, he may not take Mills record for playing the most games in the league as a CB, but he will come pretty close.

Hofland (JG/AS) – season 6 to present – 91games, 3 internationals, never sent off

And Hofland has played the second highest number of games of the CB’s still doing the round.  A 9 NSL as soon as he entered the league, Hoff was soon pitched into the JG side.  But seemingly, Bart didn’t like this lad and soon moved him onto AS.

Bad mistake!  Since then, Hofland has been the star defensive performer for AS, and can still make the holy grail of 100 league appearances if he lasts until season 12.

If nice guys win, the Hoff will be high on the list for more than 1 reason J.

H. Foxe (DS) – season 6 to present – 53 games, 1 international, 6 yellows and 1 red card

We have already met the first CB freak in SAEFL.  Now lets meet the second.  DS is perhaps not the powerhouse of the league, but in Foxe they have one of the pre-dominant CB around right now, and the only freak CB.  Starting life as a 6 NSL player in season 7, Foxe very much moved into top gear in the last couple terms, and is now reaching the peak of his career as a 11.5 NSL superpower.

One dagger that hangs over Foxe’s head is a lack of silverware at the Scientists.  Will this change in the future?  Time will tell.

J. Oshea (NW/AP) – season 8 to present – 56 games, 2 internationals, no red and not even a yellow!

Of the present teams in SAEFL, rather strangely, AP have three of the best CBs around, despite the club usually opting for a WP tactic.

O’Shea might be the best of the new crop of CBs.  With Dingsdag and Jansen_1, the 3 CBs at AP have now played 141 games in SAEFL.

If J’O continues his progress, expect him to have tapped out 80-90 games at AP before his career is out.

Oh, and one other point to consider.  NO DP during his career.  The nice of the nice has landed (now watch him get sent off this week J)

M. Jansen_1 (AP) – season 8 to present – 51 games, 5 internationals, 1 yellow and no reds

At a young 25, Jansen_1 has perhaps more of a chance to get to the hallowed 100 club than most of the CBs currently in SAEFL.  With only 1 yellow to his name, he is dependable as they come.  The rest, well, look at O’Shea J

C. Sebastian (EW) – season 7 to present – 71 games, 5 internationals, never sent off

Part of a double act with Grey, Sebastian has formed an outstanding defensive partnership that has helped EW develop over the last few years, and eventually led them to the top flight.

Starting life as a 8 NSL played in season seven, SC was soon pitched in to the EW side, and, within a season, G&S were as regular as me on the bog after prunes (sorry ;))  He has a shot at 100, and with another world cup next season, expect this lad to get more international caps.

CB H. Grey (EW) – season7 to present – 89 games, 1 international, never sent off

Whatever you say about Seb, can also be said of Grey.  In fact, HG was chucked into the EW side before his partner in crime, and has seen the highs and the lows at the Warrens.  His career might be on the decline now, but as this man is only about 10 games off a century of appearances in SAEFL, he may only need a few come season 12.

M. Man_1 (AP) – season 4 to season 10 – 81 games, 1 international games, 3 yellows and 1 red card

When I was researching CBs, I somehow missed this lad.  Man_1 may have only managed 1 international game in 7 seasons of league service, but he helped establish a bedrock from which AP are benefiting today.

J. Hemingway (JG/AP) – season 4 to season 10 – 99 games, 3 international games, 11 yellows, no red cards

In fact, come to think about it, AP may have produced the highest number of quality CBs in SAEFL.  Hemmingway has to be ranked as one of the best.  He missed out on the 100 club by an agonising 90 minutes of football (tut tut Martin J).

Playing with M.Man, he helped AP to their highest finish ever in SAEFL.  O’Shea and co will do very well to get to that stage.

CB S. Wrightt (MR) – season 8 to present – 58 games, 4 internationals, never sent off

MR have not been the side of old over the last few terms, but this man has been one of their leading lights.  Playing his first game as a raw 6 NSL in season 8, Wrightt is now the rock at the back at Melchester, and has already played 15 games this season.

So, a mammoth 25 CBs in the list, spanning all the way from the oldies to the newies. But who takes your fancy?  Voting ends Friday 2nd June.

MACCA TAKES THE PLAUDITS AS HE IS CHOSEN AS THE PREMIER DS IN SAEFL - EVER

Well lets be honest.  It was always likely to boil down to McGoo and Sylfar.  But despite most of the top picks going to either of these men, an incredible 9 DS got votes from the people that matter – you:

Borgsen, Herrick, Sylfar, Boutana, Sammer, Foulkes, McGoo Swance and Catenaccio.

But, to the top 3.

And in 3rd place came Boutana.  With 150 games in all competitions spanning 8 seasons with 4 clubs, Bouts was always going to be in the running, and he proved very popular, with 7 managers picking him.

In 2nd spot – Sylfar.  With 11 picks, and 2 as the number 1 choice, so many managers obviously agree with me that Sylfar is one of those players you can’t ignore.  A true servant of AA in the meanest defence around.  A 5 5 stats freak superstar.  He really should be in that hall of fame.

And in number 1 spot, it just had to be McGoo.  The man that came to be as associated with SAEFL as rain is with Leeds at the moment was voted in by 16 managers and 10 in first place.

The original top defender was also my choice, and my 1/2/3 was:

1st = McGoo

2nd = Sylfar

3rd = Borgsen

But don ‘t get me wrong, picking between Borgy and Bouts was hard.  Great decision all.

McGoo now joins Mills in the SAEFL all-time squad.  To find out which CB joins that elite list, check the press next week.

Coming soon –

WHO WILL BE YOUR PICK FOR THE TOP FULL BACK?

SIMPSON, BERLINNIN, CAFU, CAMPBELL, GNASHER AND MALDINI DO BATTLE FOR GLORY.

Excelsior Warren

From the Excelsior Herald...

Getting knocked out of the cup was another blow to the faithful, yet in truth Excelsior could hardly afford the distraction of the cup, when their league form and their prospects appear so poor. Another tricky away game this week at AP. The bookies predict a home win and frankly who could disagree.

F.C Inferno

And he we are for the second time ever on the semi-finals of the cup!

However, I do thing that we have the weakest top 10 of the remaining 4 teams... :)

On the league, we face league leaders and title favorites CA. A draw would definitely not be a bad idea, but it will most likely turn into a hard defeat.

InterQuartile Rangers

In the 6 Div 1 league games there were 5 red and 11 yellow cards!!  These refs are vicious!  The 4 cup matches were a little better with 1 red and 6 yellows.

In the last league game, Lisbon obviously wanted it more than we did.  I think the ZD would have worked if not for his grudge card.  As the man said, Keller did well in the goal, he just didn't get enough help from his team mates!

I don't think EW was trying very hard this time around in the cup.  Still a win is a win.  Now if I can manage a couple in league games and avoid relegation.  I hadn't decided to really try for the cup, but I guess this week the decision was made for me.  Kudos to Hamm for 4 goals on 6 shots!

A good game for us against IQ, or in other words a win. We now managed to close the gap to the other teams.

Never the less have to keep working hard.

We play AA this week, we will rest our team. We need to be fresh for other games.

Out of the blue, from behind, avoiding grudges and boosts, and wham, a leading spot in the last week,

we will see.

A review of all press by the manager last week made him furious, think the press battle has started now,

with some more time ahead, we will come with a suited anwer!

again a battle against NW. And as usual it will probably be a ZD against CP again. Both teams will emp around 145 meaning no one will get shots but who will get that penalty ?? :) good luck Mike !

Adirondak Renegades

Adirondak Press (AP):Impressive and important victory this week.

Manager Fulmer (MF): I was very pleased with our effort and the result. Not only did we win a big game, but we did it against ES, a team we have had a lot of trouble with in the past.

AP: The win puts AR 8 points above the relegation zone.

MF: True, but I like to look at it as we are out of the last playoff spot only on goal differential, and just 2 points out of the 4th spot.

AP: AR turned in a very strong offensive performance this week.

MF: Yes, and once again we were led by MF H Ellraiser who finished 4 of 5 chances. We also had outstanding performances by WH W Hell scoring 3 times on 4 shots. (Is the similar theme in their names a coincidence?) AM N GoodmanJr had his best outing since his recent insertion in the top 11 with 3 goals on 7 shots. E ShivuteJr had another outstanding match, and is certainly the key to our attack. His 4 goals on 10 chances is only part of the story. He is now the 4th ranked midfielder and 12th ranked player overall in SAEFL. Certainly the highest rankings during my tenure.

AP: He is also the first player to play 5 matches without being traded during your tenure.

MF: :

AP: AR has a couple of important matches this week.

MF: We start with the 2nd cup leg against FI. It is a home match, but I think we dug ourselves too big of a hole the first leg.

AP: The NH match is also at home.

MF: Yes, I, very glad of that. This is a key game, as NH is only one point behind us. I expect a very tough match. Robert will have them ready and I'm sure they will come at us hard.

After Cup Match

AP: The cup match was dull and pretty boring.

MF: I guess it depends how you look at it.

AP: Losing 3-0 and not getting a shot on goal is exciting?

MF: Actually, it was, considering. I used the match to rest players and take a look at some new players we recently acquired. DS O Fire, MF Fulmer, and WH Dinning all played well in their first match for AR. Fulmer and Dinning played extremely well, which looks good for the future. Now we just need to get the future here.

MF: Congratulations to Marco. Good luck in trying to win back to back cup titles!

SH is going full throttle to try and get clear of the relegation zone. "

We are prepared to use all means necessary to accomplish this task, "

said SH Manager Lear. "Our players are rising to the challenge because of their improved play since the the start of the 2nd half of the season. It is going to be a tough struggle. SH has entered into serious negotiations with another SAEFL squad for a possible major deal that will vastly improve SH should this deal go through. It is coming down to the wire. Stay tuned.

I don't really know what to say for this, because I am taking a risk here. You will see what I mean in the up coming games, or not if I lose.

There is no GC for Travis this week, because I am hoping my team puts aside the animosity for today and focuses that anger onto TS.

I have given them drugs, but for my players it is aloud. (Boost) Lets see what that does.

After two long weeks my team is tired. We realy wanted to beat FU. So now we play AK and it looks like his team is perfoming better so this one will be though for FE. It seems that all the team are playing better and that you dont get a chance to rest you stars.
