DIVISION 2 GAMES

Druss Legends against England Under 21 is the battle between the numbers 1 and 2 in league 2, and that means that you could call this match the match of the week. At first sight at least. However, the reality is that the fight for the number 2 position is actually more exciting (EU is fighting with GU for that runner up spot), as both EU and GU are at 27 points where DL is way ahead with 37 points. In fact, I guess it’s safe to say that if DL manages to win this one, and GU loses points, it might not be official yet, but Martijn can be called the new champion. (If he could be called that already). In that case, by the way, EU of course would lose expensive points in the race to at least that 2nd position, which is the position that avoids the playoffs and has a guaranteed ticket to div 1. No doubt about it: an important match for both teams, and it will be no surprise that we saw a grudge and a boost. The grudge was for DL, and they also had the home advantage, and that was more than EU (or, i.m.o, any other team in div 2) could cope with. The difference was 30 EMP!!! DL showed a classy performance, and the smashing 29-8 victory was a good reflection of their superb play. Mike has to focus on the nr. 2 place now, where Martijn can already order champagne!

SAEFL SEASON 11 WEEK 18

Adirondak Renegades and Newton Heath are, at positions 7 and 8 on the table, still in full competion for the playoffs, just like last year. So of course, a match in which they play each other is a six-pointer. Don apparently was more destined to win it, as he played a boost where Robert didn’t. That was enough to bring AR the victory. Both teams were almost equally strong, and also equally nervous (both sides saw 1 player leave the field early), so it was probably the boost that was decisive. 3 very important points for Don and AR, who are 4 points ahead of NH now, with this victory, and that is a good step towards reaching those playoffs. In fact, if PN, TJ or DS lose points this week, AR climb towards the top half of the table, and that is exactly where Don wants AR to be at the end of the season. However, you can already predict that the fight for the playoff positions will remain exciting until the very end of the season.

SAEFL SEASON 11 WEEK 18

It took some time before Len started to win some points with Stannington Historical, but now he seems to have gotten the taste of it (well, that and a nice aging, I guess), as this week we see another victory for SH. This weeks victim is the unfortunate Melchester Rovers. Unfortunate not only because they saw 2 players leave the field, which made the grudge they played actually worthless, but also because Bruce really could use a win in this match to keep MR in div 2. However, SH had more NSL, played a boost, and managed to end the game with 11 players, and all those things added up resulted in a much much better performance for SH, and so the 9-0 victory was a logical result. Will Len be able to save SH from relegation? Of course these 3 points are welcome in this effort, but the difference with the nr. 9 on the table is still big, so we’ll have to wait.

SAEFL SEASON 11 WEEK 18

The Jazz and the Dead Scientists are the numbers 4 and 5 on the table, and although they aren’t in the race for the title anymore, they are still very much in the race for the playoffs, and even for the nr. 2 position. However, if any of these 2 teams wants to stay in the race for that runner up spot, this game absolutely has to be won, as the difference (as per last week) is already 5 points. Important match for both Stewart and Tim, however, neither chose to play a boost or grudge. Both TJ and DS started the game with almost equally strong teams, and ended the game with a lot less strong team. TJ because of 2 red cards, and DS because of 3 (!) injuries! So, there was a lot to talk about after this game….. Anyway, as a result of the cards and the injuries, and the absence of boosts and grudges, in EMP both TJ and DS remained almost equally strong. The difference in the end was made by the GK’s, and since TJ had the better GK, they won the game: 6-2. TJ stay in the race for the 2nd place, while DS lose important points, but remain in the race for the playoffs. Both teams however will suffer next week from the absence of players, either because of injury or suspension.

SAEFL SEASON 11 WEEK 18

Another top half clash in div 2, as the numbers 3 and 6 meet: Point of Napier against Grammar United. After EU lost against the unleashed DL, we already know that GU can climb to nr. 2 position if they manage to win at least a point today. But of course, PN will try to prevent that, as they are in the race for at least the playoffs, and who knows what more if they will be able to beat GU today. That is why Kelly played a grudge, to try to keep the 3 points at Ayrton Senna Memorial Stadium. The grudge made that PN was better than GU, in fact the difference was 6.6 EMP. But we all know (yeah, I know, it’s almost a cliché) how hard it is to score against GU, and in this case, once again a 6.6 difference wasn’t enough. When GK Topperr managed to save the only chance of the match, GU headed for yet another 0-0. Enough to climb to the 2nd place, so Michael will be happy. Kelly will be a little disappointed I guess (you are always disappointed if you play a grudge and don’t win), but on the other side, it’s also important that she did not lose this one. PN pass DS on the table, but then again they are passed by AR, so PN remain on 6th position. (That is…if I did my math allright…..)

SAEFL SEASON 11 WEEK 18

The African Selects against Englehart Storm can be called a relegation match. AS are the nr. 11 on the table, and ES are on position 9, just on the good side of the line. The difference between them is 9 points (8 for AS, and 17 for ES), so I guess it’s safe to say, especially after we already saw MR lose as well, that ES could take a huge huge step towards extending their stay in div 2, as they would create a gap that even would be larger than it is already. So, if I were Peter, I would play the strongest ES team possible, and play a grudge or at least a boost, to secure that win. However, he didn’t do that it seems he didn't show up for the match so his team NMR. Colin didn’t play a boost or grudge either, and on top of that, 2 AS players were sent off. As result of that, ES still was a little stronger, but it wasn’t enough for a smother shot. The match would have ended in a 0-0 stalemate, if it weren’t for the fact that AS were awarded a penalty, and kicked it home. That was enough for a 1-0 victory. A very, very lucky win for Colin and AS, but a lucky win is just as many points as a suberb win: 3! That’s good news for SH, MR and AS, as with the loss for ES, they still have chances to avoid relegation. And for AS, these 3 points bring AS closer to ES, as the difference is 6 points now, and that can be overcome in 2 games, as we all know.
