IS IT THE MILLER SHOW?  CB VOTE DECIDED BY NARROW MARGIN

Well, with so many quality centre backs to choose from in the nominations list this week, it was always going to be difficult to pick a winner.

But in the end, despite the likes of Turkey, Boshier, Jones, Campbell and my personal fave (well, for his red card antics) Ward, the vote for the winner came down to just two men – NW’s Nesta and AA’s Mills.

So, who won?

Well, the vote was an incredibly tight affair, with the leading party swinging from Nesta to Mills, back to Nesta and so on …

In the end, it really was a question of which player got more first place nominations.  Only 1 other player (Miller) received a first place vote.

And the player that won the battle was Mills.  The AA stalwart helped secure the Alcies defence for many a season and was one of the main reasons that the club have had considerable success down the years.

This is not to downplay Nesta’s achievements – the CB freak was a quality asset for NW for many a season.  But perhaps NW being a more offensive side might have gone against him.

No matter – whoever won was going to be a worthy addition to the all-star team.

For the record, the 1,2,3 was:

1.                  Mills (EU/AA)

2.                  Nesta (NW)

3.                  Boshier (PN/AR/FI)

The likes of Campbell, Turkey and Miller just missed out.

Mills therefore joins Mill and McGoo in the SAEFL hall of fame.

FB NOMINATIONS

After taking a week out of research for party and house hunting reasons, it’s time to look at the FB situation.  I want every manager to look at their rosters and see if they have any players who have played 70 or more games in total.

If this is the case, I would like you to send me the following information:

Total games played / total goals scored / total yellow / total red / international games / age

It would also be great to see managers writing some press about their individual teams best ever FB.  Take a look at the SAEFL MR through the seasons … I’m sure some managers will be interested in the results.  No doubt Peter will recognise your contribution to the all-star SAEFL team process with financial reward J J

The FB nominations will follow in full next week.

FORWARDS TAKE THE GLORY BUT ALTERCAPIO SHOWS TRUE CLASS IN AA ROMP

In a match that most fans expected to go down to the wire – what with LU showing just what a good outfit they were a week before, AA came out all guns blazing in a match they just had to win to keep alive their chances of league glory.

And it was the rather surprising tactical selection of manager Foss, given the defensive jewels on display at the club, hat made all the difference, as AA went WP, causing tactical confusion among the ranks of Lisbon.

With LU employing a backs to the wall mentality, Poole, Essien, Heskey and co. flooded forwards on every occasion possible, hemming the opposition into the final 3rd of the field and breaking through to create several good goalscoring opportunities.

In the end, it was Hittingbricks who took most of the applause, with a superb hattrick that Rowbottom at his finest for JG would have been proud of.

But many of the commentators in the crowd, as well as astute fans, would have noted the display of DS Altercapio.  Walter is now showing the kind of mesmerising form that Foss noted was possible when Foss plucked this lad from TB to be the eventual replacement for long-serving DS and hall-of-famer O. Sylfar.

‘The Cap’, as he is known, put the top on the display with his no-nonsense ability to communicate with others around him and make the kind of decision-making that only the best players are known for,

If Altercapio can keep up this sort of form, with the trading decisions AA are making, opposition forwards could face tough times ahead next season.

AA ACQUIRE A CHIP OFF THE OLD WOOD BLOCK AS NEW DEFENDER ARRIVES AT THE PUB

With AA building up a superb number of quality young FB and AS, it was a shock this week to find that manager Foss has traded one of his most sellable assets – FB Ball, to OC in a deal that sees the club pick up another defensive talent.

After lengthy (tee hee) negotiations with the man mountain that is Keith “The Killer” Myers, a deal was eventually struck in the late, late hours of Wednesday, which saw a straight trade as AA acquired 26 year old 9.25 DS Woods.

Foss explains the decision making process:

”Although we recognise the ability of Ball, the club felt that with the likes of Altercapio, SylfarJr and CatenaccioJr all improving and looking to be quality players for the club now and in the future, the option of adding another defensive rock to that list was just too good to pass up”.

“Now with 4 strong DS at the club, it may not be long before AA employs the kind of TC/TS tactics that caused opposition forwards so many difficulties a few seasons ago – while the trade does not take away too much from our other tactics, such as CP, ZD, BC, WP and the like”.

The question is with this kind of deal, will other teams be able to see the Trees for the Woods?  Watch out all …

Catbel Athletic

It's official: Catbel Athletic is safe from relegation!

Already 7 matches before the end of the season, CA has gathered enough points to secure the stay in division 1 for at least another year.

However, it will be no surprise that -given the positions on the table- avoiding relegation wasn't this years nr. 1 goal. The Championship is what we're really after now.

Sure, at the beginning of the season, even the CA board would not have expected to go for it, but after some nice developments (trades at the beginning of the season and the midseason aging), it already was clear in the first half of the season that CA presented themselves as a candidate for the title.

Now, at 2/3rd of the season, with 7 matches left, it looks like CA and AA are the 2 teams left for the fight for the championship. Sure, TB and JG can still be considered outsiders, but with 21 points left to play for, they are 10 points behind, and they still have to play against each other, so it is safe to say that at least one of them will definitely not win that title.

No, of course I want to do everything possible to win that nr. 1 position in the end, but if I have to point the team capable of stopping me from that, it of course is AA, without any surprise I guess.

AA have the combination of 3 things:

1) They simply have the most points of all the other teams. This is of course the most important reason, as that is what it's all about. Sure, in the first half of the season, I sometimes wondered how they managed to win all those points.

No offense Nathan, but in the beginning of the season, you traded away some important players (like freak CM Wictoria, and CM Bremmner to me, your current rival!), and started building for the next season. And looking at the EMP in the AA matches in the first half, I suppose at least 50% of the div 1 teams could have beaten AA if they would have gone for it.

But apparantly they didn't, and look where that brought AA! And now it's not in their best interest anymore to go all the way against AA, so that is only good for them.

2) After midseason aging, AA have developed into a very strong team. I still think that CA is just a little stronger, but that is no guarantee to win matches week after week of course.

AA however, prove week after week that they are capable of generating a lot of EMP, also in away matches, and that will probably be why they will remain fighting for the title until the very end

3) AA have one of the best managers in the entire game, Nathan.

This is, in my opinion, even more important than the previous reason.

You can have a great team, but if you don't know how to get the best out of your players, out of the possible tactics and styles, and out of the possible tactics of your opponent, your good players might lose just as easy. Nathan has proven to be a very skilled manager, who can get the best out of his team. And like I said, that team already is good!

So, with all respect to Jeroen and Bart (did I just write that???), of course Nathan and AA will be the nr. 1 rival, when it comes to who will stop CA from winning the title.

Besides some obvious other things, however, there is 1 very important difference between AA and CA this season.

The AA team is, like I already mentioned previously, a team that is building for next season. They are very good already, so next season I expect them to be even better. On the other side, CA has obtained some old players, in an effort to win a prize this year. Quite some CA players are in the fall of their careers, and if it weren't for the fact that we have been very lucky that 7 out of 8 NSL 10 players remained NSL 10 at midseason aging, this squad would have had a lot of dropping players.

Which means that, even if AA would not win the title this year, they don't have to worry, as I think that next year their chances will even be bigger.

And for CA, if we win the title or not, we sure have to start rebuilding the squad, as I don't think that I will be lucky enough that all those players remain NSL 10 again. So if CA has any chance of winning the division 1 championship for the second time (although of course, it will be this managers first time), it will be this season.

This week, we have to play against TH, who have done a great job in reaching the semi-finals of the cup, and have proven to be a very strong team. However, these achievements must have been fatigueing for some TH players, so we expect that they have to rest.

However, CA is not in the position to take any risks, and that is why we have to play a strong team anyway.

Let's hope it will bring us another 3 points, because with 3 points more than AA (and a better goal difference), every win is a step closer to the title.

Excelsior Warren

F.C Inferno

Can this passing ONE team beat the counterpunches expected from LU? At least this is the question we put before this game. LU recently rested players and do need points to avoid relegation. In an away game we are the potential target but we can put a good fight; LU are favorites (maybe a grudge?) but nothing is impossible

InterQuartile Rangers

No red cards and only 9 yellows.  Unfortunately, one team had 4 yellows in one game!

A 0-0 tie.  What's the expression?  It's kinda like kissing your cousin.

Especially when there wasn't a single shot by either team.  The good news for us is it's the first time a defensive tactic by IQ actually shut down the other team!  So we're making progress.  Still it would have been nice to stick in one goal.

The good news this week is that at last LU got a new player. A point against TB would be gold.

We’ll play CP, maybe ZD would be more secure but we need to score goals.

CONGRATULATIONS to NATHAN for is dedication and (wonderful) work in is press involving us all. THANKS MATE

Adirondak Renegades

Adirondak Press (AP): I do believe in miracles! The Renegades are in fifth place, an actual playoff position!

Manager Fulmer (MF): We need to take a picture and frame it. Our schedule is about to get much tougher.

AP: Lets enjoy the present, then we can look towards the future. This week saw another key win from AR.

MF: Yes, I am very happy with how this still young team is performing. 23 yo AM GoodmanJr had his second straight hat trick. 22 yo WH Ittermik also had a hat trick, and 21 yo GK W Evans saved 8 of 12 chances. Old man Mitreski, who is 25, also scored 3 goals.

AP: OK, enough celebrating. This week AR has a tough match against PN, who are one place below you in the standings.

MF: Very tough. They are at home, but more importantly Kelly rested Nol and Greene last week. I'm sure she will have them ready to come out blazing against us. They were held without a goal against GU last week, so I'm sure they will want to make up for that against us.

AP: They were held without a goal, but against GU that is very common. PN still managed a draw, a very good result against GU.

MF: I agree that was a very good result, but a group of players with the strong attacking mindset PN's players have won't be satisfied with being held scoreless, no matter what the result.

AP: The schedule doesn't get easier after PN, with matches against GU and TJ.

MF: Lets focus on this week first, then we will worry about future matches.

African Selection

Whoa baby. The mighty mighty Selects host the Storm and they take three points from the visiting team. WHO cares if it was on an NMR? WHO cares if it was on a penalty? Yeah baby, three more points. We are now officially on our way to avoiding relegation!

Hope all is well with you out there.

"SH is really starting to heat up," were the words of SH Manager Len Lear as they prepared for their upcoming battle with EU. Lear went onto say," Our SH lads are just starting to realize what they can do. Our Kiddies Corp has been playing some good footie lately and our vets aren't backing off either. SH is proving that the way to success is to inherit some short term pain  for the long term gain.  We are scoring goals and are also allowing fewer goals against , thanks to our outstanding GK tandem of  S. Tained &  K. Loothommel. Even though we are still at the bottom  of D-2, with  one more win, SH will jump a couple of places  and be in a real solid position to avoid relegation.  Another thing I like about our squad is that we are versatile. Opposing teams don't know what we are going to throw at them. We are now winning with a variety of tactics such as WP, WH, etc. The scary thought for opposing managers is that SH is still perhaps one or two agings away from most of their younger players reaching their top NSL. I love our chances...!

DIVISION 3

Adelaide Kickers

It ain't over 'till it's over

Last week Adelaide proved that the season is not yet over.  They appear to have gone back to basics despite the manager being away from the training ground and letting the assistants take over.  The end result was a 17-8 win against a classy Fantastic Eleven team.

On paper though with the players that played for FE last week, you would have to say the Clive didn't really put his best eleven on the pitch.  That is not to say that FE played badly, just that at home AK played better and with a belief that hey we can still get promoted this season.

The win puts AK 7 points out of the playoff zone with 7 games remaining and with an away match against SS a win will certainly help their cause and could mean depending on how well VA play this week that a win the following week against VA will only put them 1 point behind them.

Let's get out there and keep supporting the lads in their push for the playoffs.

After slipping into the red the falcons have to dig deep to get themselves out of the mess they have gotten themselves into. Unfortunately we are playing FE one of the stronger teams in the division this week so we don't think things are quite going our way atm.

Travis, Travis, Travis, I don't know where you have gone, but you need to come back to earth.

Good old DV, I know how it feels when you have player that was on your team that now plays against you. I have every player, but one, that was on your team is playing in this game.

We know this, because we both themed our teams.

Anyway I have sent all the girls back to the island, and I am focusing on the games.

This is an advert for next weeks game, come watch FU vs. DT at Crazy Park. I have a big stadium and all are welcome, it should be a good game.
