DIVISION 1 GAMES

Oaklake City is in the relegation zone, at 11th position, and that is of course where they don't want to be. The difference between the number 8 and the number last is only 1 single point, so the situation in the bottom half of the table is so close, that it would take only 1 victory to jump a few places. Well, a home game against Jazz Greats would be a good opportunity for Keith, to do something about OC's position, and climb to the good side of the danger line. Of course, when you compare both teams, I think that JG is the better team, at least when you look at the top 11 players. But we know that JG's first priority this season is the cup, so in a week after the cup quarter finals, you know that you have a chance of winning when you play a home game against JG. Keith did not take any chances, and on top of that knowledge, he also played a grudge, just to be sure. And he can be happy, cause this combination was succesful, as expected: OC beat JG 30-12. The 2 red cards for JG made the win even bigger than it already would have been. With this loss, I think Bart can forget about winning the title (before this, JG still was an outsider), but he won't care too much, as the league is not what he aims for this season. Keith will be pleased to see that OC took a nice step towards safety, but since everything was very close, and we don't know yet what the competition have done, there's no time to sit back and relax.

SAEFL SEASON 11 WEEK 19

Two of those teams that are OC's competition, when it comes to relegation (and of course: avoiding it!), are Excelsior Warren and InterQuartile Rangers. EW is on last place with 13 points, and IQ is on the safe side with 14 points. (Just to show how very close it is....) A win for EW though, would turn everything upside down, and would make EW climb from last position to a position on the good side of the line. So, it was no surprise that Simon played a grudge, as with IQ only 1 point ahead, this match could be a six-pointer. IQ didn't even play a boost, so in a home game, EW could have brought those points home! However, with all that pressure, apparantly the EW players couldn't keep their nerve. Not 1, but 2 players were sent off, and that cost EW some EMP. I did the math: due to the red cards, EW missed 12.22 EMP. Well well, looking closer: even without the red cards, IQ would have been better. And when you take into consideration that -although the difference was marginal- IQ also had the better GK, I guess that chances are big that IQ would have won this game anyhow. So, 3 very important points for Terry, after the victory for OC, at least he knows that it won't be at his expense, if OC would climb the table. Simon won't be all to happy, as when you want to escape relegation, you actually have to win home games like this, especially when you play a grudge. Will EW manage to set things right in the remaining 6 matches?

SAEFL SEASON 11 WEEK 19

Catbel Athletic keeps on winning and winning every week, and it is only because of the fact that AA does the same, that the fight for the title is still exciting, as who is going to stop CA? Not Tottenford Heats, you'd think. Sure, TH are still the reigning champions, and sure, they still have a nice team. But when they traded away all their stars for young and promising talents, and started rebuilding for next season, we knew that they wouldn't compete for the top positions. Besides, we could see that (much like JG), Mark shows to be a cup fighter once again, and when TH is going for the cup, they tend to forget about the league. So, with all this in mind, you'd think Ivo would have an easy game at Stubborn Park. Nonetheless, he did not take any chances, and played with a strong team. Just have a look: he put 98.25 NSL on the pitch, didn't gamble on TH resting players, and that is good. If you want to fight for the championship, you can't afford to take risks like that. However, all that was not enough. The red card for CM Garanhao was a bummer for CA. It spoiled are the good intentions Ivo had, and the 14 EMP lost because of it, was exactly the difference between TH and CA, and that meant a 1-0 victory for TH. Which, of course, (don't forget it!), also means that TH would not have lost this game! Just look at the numbers: Mark may have fielded 8 NSL less, but look at those boys performing! Mark played a strong ZD, and had all the right players on the right positions, and on top of that, all those players have very good stats too. And that to think that TH even rested some players! So, Ivo may have been unlucky with the red card, but the fact that he did not win this game had absolutely nothing to do with luck or bad luck: TH simply was too strong to be beaten, and that's that! Now, this would mean an excellent opportunity for AA (who were 3 points behind) to catch up with CA, and then the fight for the title will be more exciting then it already was. Only goal difference would separate them. For TH: it's too late for them to mingle in the fight for this season's title, but boy, you have to watch out for them again in the next season!!

SAEFL SEASON 11 WEEK 19

Lisbon United and FC Inferno are the numbers 5 and 8 on the table. Looking at those positions on the table, you'd say that the difference wouldn't be that big, but the realitly is different: LU is one of those 5 teams that are very close together, fighting to avoid relegation (in which of course 3 teams cannot succeed), while FI is safe, with 9 points more than LU, and the only reason that the gap isn't bigger is the fact that FI is going for the cup (and with success, as they are in the semi-finals). However, last week was a cup week, so maybe FI had to rest players, and since LU played at home, they might win this one, why not. Nuno even played a boost, to increase his chances on winning 3 points. But it wasn't enough. Cup or no cup, the difference between LU and FI simply is too big this season, although the fact that LU forgot (?) to pick a tactic, will of course have had to do a great deal with that difference. Anyway, after we saw OC and IQ win, and EW lose, we see the 4th team fighting against relegation lose their match, and that means that LU drops into the relegation zone. Will the mighty LU survive this struggle? Nuno is a good enough manager to be able to do that, but he has to make sure to pick a tactics. 3 more points for FI, but Marco will be happier with a win in the semi-finals I think.

SAEFL SEASON 11 WEEK 19

The Boelewieten are at 4th position, right behind nr. 3 on goal differenc. But we already saw JG lose their game, so 1point against AA would be enough to climb the table to 3rd position. However, playing against the nr. 2.....the difference between TB and AA is 7 points, with a victory, TB could reduce that to 4 points, with 6 matches to go. Of course, both beating AA, and (if that would have worked) catch up 4 points will be very difficult, but if you don't try it, you will not succeed at all. That is why Jeroen played a grudge, hoping that TB would clutch onto that last straw of making it to the 2nd spot. Nathan however, is a good manager, and is not the nr. 2 for no reason. He already expected TB to be a strong team, with cunning plans. And it was a good decision to play his last grudge in this game, to prevent a loss for AA. The idea was good, that is, because TB turned out to be better than AA. With the grudge, they managed to EMP more than 145, and that is probably enough to trouble any team. The almost 138 EMP (in an away game!) for AA was of course quite impressive, but it was not enough. The 6.5 EMP difference led to 23 chances for TB, against 18 for AA, and since TB also had a slightly better GK, you can only conclude that the 12-6 win for TB was deserved. AA fail to catch up and benefit from CA's loss, and the gap between the numbers 1 and 2 remains 3 points. (Plus: the goal difference was already in CA's favour, and since they lost with 1 goal difference, and AA lost with 6 goals difference, that increased in CA's favour). However, with 6 matches left, everything is still possible of course, especially when you consider that next weeks game for CA is against.....TB!! TB climb to the 3rd position, and are 4 points behind AA. Will they manage to catch AA with 6 games left?

SAEFL SEASON 11 WEEK 19

Apocalypse against NoShaKi WC '98 is the game between the numbers 6 and 10 on the table. AP's season is somewhat anonymous. They are out of the cup, they are out of the race for the title, and they have enough points not to worry about relegation. If this game wouldn't be this much fun, Martin could forget about this season and start thinking and building for next season. For Mike and NW, the situation was completely different. With a stunning win over AA, NW qualified for the next cup round, and managed to get to the quarterfinals, in which they just lost on penalties last week. Those good cup results may have been a little at the expense of the results in the league, because for almost the entire first half of the season, we have seen the mighty NW, the reigning runner up, at the very bottom of the table. In the second half of the season, we have seen NW fight back, win points, and get close to climbing out of the danger zone. Of course, Mike will regret not having reached the semi-finals, but now he can totally focus on the league, and that will probably be enough to save NW from relegation. At least, that is what you would think. However, in this game, 2 things were decisive, and they weren't in NW's favour. In the first place, there was the red card for CM Nietzsche. NW missed 8 EMP with that, and when you consider that now AP and NW were almost equally strong (they both created 34 chances), you can imagine how many chances more NW would have had. In the second place: AP's GK was 1 NSL better. Now both teams had the exact same number of chances, that of course decided the winner, and that was AP with 16-11. 3 more points for AP, but since TB, TH and FI also won their game, that doesn't change much in the top half of the table. For NW, the loss of points is more expensive. Since OC and IQ won, the gap to the nr. 9 position has suddenly become 3 points. Although with 6 more matches, nothing of course has been decided yet.
