DIVISION 1 GAMES

The first match in division 1 this season, is the clash between 2 new teams, InterQuartile Rangers and Catbel Athletic. Both Terry and Ivo’s primary goal this season, will probably be trying to stay in div 1. Since last season, in Div 2 they already showed that they can play with competitive lineups (Ivo showed that in the league, while Terry showed it in both cup and league), both IQ and CA are not per se relegation candidates. In their first match, back in div 1 again (as we have 2 teams with old div 1 glory here), one thing looks different than last season: the GK. Terry played a strong ONE team, and Ivo countered that with a solid CP (much like everyone expected I guess) and that made both teams almost equally strong. IQ got 27 chances, against 26 for CA. However, unlike last season, in this very first match of season 11, the 9.75 NSL GK did a better job than the 9.5 GK, saving just a couple of shots more, which resulted in a 14-11 victory for CA. Terry might have won this match when playing with a NSL 10 GK, but they are hard to obtain in this game. Ivo may call himself very very lucky that his mistake to forget pointing a captain turns out to have no bad consequences in the end.

It’s interesting to see if these two promoted sides have changed positions after this agings. It seems not. Because in this match CA is still the strongest of them two. Both teams look solid though and when you examine the match closely it’s even kind of a surprise CA won because IQ had the better emp. Even playing CP which takes away some of his bonuses! Simply put, CA had the better goalie and that’s why they won. For sure both team look good enough to play in Div1. no easy meat for the more established teams… Ivo did make a mistake by not picking a captain so their emp could have been higher. This means Terry will need to work hard to keep CA under him in a (possible) relegation battle. But then again, maybe that battle is going to be fought by other teams.

The clash between NoShaKi WC’98 and Alcohol Anonymous is a classic, it is like Liverpool-Man Utd. And as long as Mike and Nathan will be managing these great teams, I guess that nothing will change that. For this season, they will both be outsiders for the title I guess. Once again, both teams were almost equally strong, with EMP’s around 130, the difference was less than 2. For the result, the story looks somewhat like the previous match. NW turned out to be slightly better (probably the home advantage), which rendered him 1 shot more: 14 against 13 for AA. But since AA had a better GK (10 against 9.75 NSL), he did a slightly better job, saving just a little bit more, which eventually resulted in a 5-4 victory for AA. So, in the end, the boost that Nathan played did it, it was just enough to make the difference to win him the 3 points.

The ultimate classic is a thriller indeed! Mike and Nathan didn’t do anything under for each other and both teams reached respectable emps. Mike emped a little bit higher but again it was the slightly better GK that nade the difference in this match! Now the question is, did Nathan get stronger or did Mike get weaker? Time will tell..

Apocalypse was last years nr. 3, while The Boelewieten were lucky to escape from relegation just in time. However, that was because Jeroen was either brave or foolish enough (choose whatever you like, or maybe those two things even go together) to use his very first season in div 1 for building up with youth players. He even traded freak player DM Jack away for that, whose presence would have kept him in div 1 for sure. However, he chose for an exciting season, got away with it, and now he found himself being the manager of a team with a very promising selection. On the other side, we all know the story of AP. They were destined for relegation, until Martin took over, and since that day, they have only done great things, including being in the race for the title last year, for a long long time, which eventually resulted in a nice 3rd position. This season, looking at both their performances, I think AP and TB are almost equally strong, so I guess it will be the manager’s capability that will be decisive where both teams will be on the league table. Either that, or luck. As the outcome of this match was decided by luck. AP was expected to play WP, and Jeroen could either choose for CP or OFF to counter that. He chose the latter, and that might have been successful, if it weren’t for DM Piper to get carried away too much and being shown a red card already in the 29th minute. That was too much for TB’s countertactics, and AP had the best of it: out of 14 chances, 8 goals were scored, against 5 goals out of 11 chances for TB (Once again, the better GK has the better performance, don’t you just love it when things work out like they should?) Anyway, AP start the season as they have become used to: with a victory, while Jeroen doesn’t need to worry about this loss, as TB has the quality to bounce back. Soon.

This match is between last years surprise AP and last years relegation candidate TB. It seems this hasn’t changed because AP beat TB despite TB’s incredibly smart choice of tactics.. But the score didn’t tell the whole story. DM Piper got sent off early in this match and things could have went the other way if that didn’t happen. In short, TB looks good this season. AP continues with there good performance of last season. The biggest problem then was rotation. I have it on good authority that problem is solved now :)

The third “new” team in div 1 that we can see in action this week is Oaklake City, last years runner up in div 2. Their first match back in div 1 is a home match, against Lisbon United. OC already proved to have a strong CP/ZD team last season, and with those same players, you can play a pretty nice BC too. That’s what OC shows us this week, at least. However, already in the previous season, Nuno has shown that LU is capable of playing a very strong ZD, if they can play with the best team. And since this is the first match of the season, of course the best team can be played. Well, in that case, it is very difficult to beat LU’s defense. At least too difficult for OC in this case. The red card for GK Haffner will have had little effect on the outcome of this game, I guess. It probably would have only prevented LU getting a smother shot, but since Moura turned out to miss that, in the end it made no difference anyway.

The last promovedus OC did very well to keep LU at a draw. Despite LU’s rather disappointing season Nuno has still a team to reckon with. And LU still has a manager who is to be reckoned with! OC did have it’s GK sent off rather early so the draw is even more impressive as it looks at first sight. My God, this season everything seems possible. I haven’t seen one weak team so far!! It seems to me Nuno needs to replace some older players or this is going to be a diffecult season..

Another team that escaped from relegation last season, because of their rebuilding plans, was Jazz Greats. Last year, Bart already showed us that he had a very talented squad, and this season –since they managed to stay in div 1- had to be the season to harvest that talent, and win prizes. First victim of that quest for glory had to be FC Inferno. Yes indeed, a tough opponent, as FI is the reigning cup champion, and they didn’t win the cup for no reason because Marco is a good manager who has been able to build a good team. Both teams appeared to be almost equally strong. JG was just a little better, in EMP that is, but that was because of the boost that Bart played. (Although, in fact Bart was very unlucky with the players that benefited from this boost.) That small difference resulted in 35 chances for JG, against 33 for FI. (Yep, WP against FI, those are always attractive matches with lots of chances and lots of goals.) Both teams played with a NSL 10 GK, but apparently FI’s Ryan was in better form than JG’s Apsalar, and that made the difference: 16 for JG, 17 for FI. It’s a lousy way to lose for JG, especially since no team actually deserved to lose this great match. FI might be an outsider for the title by the way, just look at him reaching 130 EMP easily in an away game, without even having to play a boost or grudge.

What can i say? Crap!! This was a great match from two attacking teams who were, thanks to JG’s home advantadge and a boost, evenly matched. JG was even a bit stronger. But fate decided and Marco wins the match. FI looks as strong as it did last season and the cup winner might go look for greater glory. JG needs work, aging didn’t go as planned and the top 11 shows gaps..but the match was entertaining!

Last season, the first match for Excelsior Warren and Tottenford Heats, was……EW-TH! So, this season, they start with exactly the same game. In last years edition, EW surprisingly won the game, actually also due to the fact that Mark underestimated EW a little, and played ZD against EW’s solid Longball team, with great strikers. This season, we can see another victory for EW. However, this time TH played their strongest team (over 100 NSL!!), and a solid CP, so no mistakes there. But Simon showed that last years victory was not a matter of luck. Already in the entire previous season, EW have shown us that they have a very good team, and already in the first match of the season, Simon made clear that that hasn’t changed overnight. Sure, Mark was unlucky to see CM Garanhao leave the field with a red card, and frankly, I think that the chances are big that he would have won this game if it ended with 11 players against 11. Anyway, EW are back were they have been last year, in the top half of the league, while the reigning Div 1 champion has a bit of a false start, but TH has so much quality that Mark of course does not need to be worried. TH will strike back. And hard.

How does the reigning champion look!!? Well not good it seems at first sight. EW gains a stunning! stunning! victory and i know Mark will be very upset. But he needn’t be. TH looks solid. They suffered a sendoff and that is why there emp was a bit on the low side. No sentoff and they would have reached the highest emp of this league in an away match.. Simon won’t, and needn’t care one whit about that. His team performed solid and succeeded in accomplishing the upset of week 1!. My god, what a week one. I won’t predict one bit. This must be the closest season ever. Let’s see how team rotate and what trading brings. I can’t wait!
