PRESS REPORT

THE ALL STAR SAEFL TEAM PART 4 – FULL BACKS:

Campbell, Berlinnin, Simpson, Donaldson, Maldini?  The choice is YOURS!

So, GK Mill, DS McGoo and CB Mills are already in the SAEFL All-Star squad.  Who will join them in the FB ranks?

Full backs tend to peak earlier than CB and especially DS.  They are known for their graceful overlapping runs and the ability to score the odd screamer.

Below, we have 22 quality FBs from every season of SAEFL history.  But who will get your vote?

Remember, it’s your 1,2,3 we are looking for.  5 points for 1st place, 3 for 2nd and 1 point for 3rd place.

All participants are awarded with 15k in the bank.  For all those managers spending £1 million on 8 20 midfielders, that money could come in handy J

Voting ends Once next week’s EB is reached.

U. Sam – JG/AA/TBfrom season 5 to season 10; 85 games, 13 goals;  four yellows, no reds; 6 international games

Sam started life at JG, but he didn’t stay there long.  Instead, UB moved to AA in what proved a very profitable move the club.  Joining the likes of Simpson in the Alcies side, he soon won a championship medal with the club, before being off-loaded to The Booies, who he served with distinction before finally retiring last season.

S. Campbell IQseason 1 to end of season 7; 122 games, 23 goals; 4 yellows, no reds; 6 internationals

Sometimes a club gets lucky.  And boy did IQ get lucky when they snapped up S. Campbell midway through season 1.  371k might seem a piffling price these days – more akin to a 31 year old 1.75 NSL player J, but back then nearly 400k would buy you a potential star.

And as a 9.25 22 FB, Campbell was certainly that.  Unlike many FB, Sol fulfilled that promise every step of the way, immediately becoming the club captain at IQ, and helping his club and Nigel Gregory to a championship after only a few weeks at the club.

He followed up that championship win with another in season 2, and would probably have been top defender that year if the award had been introduced.

Campbell was not to be denied in season 3 though, and was rightly named the top defender of that term.  A cup final win in season 5 and two league runners-up medals followed.

It is no surprise that IQ’s demise for several terms followed the demise of Campbell.  A quality FB who was a true one man defending machine.

L. Donaldson JG/AA/NW/IQseason 1 to the end of season 6; 102 games, 26 goals; no reds and no yellows; 6 international games

Quality full backs that stay quality year after year after year are really hard to come by.  So Donaldson was quite rare.  He may have played for four clubs, but we can pretty much ignore NW as he moved on from Mike’s side as quick as you can say *…* J.

But Lou did serve JG, AA and IQ with an unswerving commitment that you rarely find in SAEFL.

A championship winner with AA, he also captained IQ to cup success in season 5.  He was perhaps AA’s original super defender, before the likes of Mills and Simpson (who really replaced him).

Most impressively, in 102 games, he did not see a red; nee even a yellow card.  Quite some achievement.

When you take the FB position into consideration, you also take into account the type of managers that choose a player.  Bart, Edwin, Mike and Gregory all chose this lad.  Quality managers – quality player.

(eer I got rid of him – not a quality manager ;))

B. Gnasher TJseason 2 to end season 9; 118 games, 30 goals; 1 yellow, no reds; 4 international games

Gnasher might not have been the most sexy of players, and he might not have played for one of the what you might call sexy teams, but like Dennis the Menace’s dog, Gnasher could really bite at a forwards ankle.

Despite his strong-arm tactics, BG was a fair soul at heart, an was booked only once in his career.  That’s an average of 0.033 DP per game, or 0.008 yellow card per game.  That hardly worried his match fee!

Another one team man, Gnasher eventually ended his career with TJ after 8 seasons which saw first division action and several play off runs.

P. Maldini TH /NW/ CAseason 3 to end of season 9; 115 games, 39 goals; 10 yellows and one red card; 0 international games

Full Backs do tend to chip in with the odd goal, but Maldini really did perform well in this regard.  39 goals in 115 games saw him score in 1 in every 3 games.  That’s some going – more in line with a midfielder or even an odd striker or two J

Maldini’s career was littered with awards, mainly during his spell at NW, where he helped the club to back-to-back titles and cup success.  But he also helped TH to build a dynasty that would in the end lead the Totts to league glory.  Sadly, his career ended in relegation with CA, but his goal-hungry style – especially at NW – will go down in the memory banks of those that saw him.

Oddly, no international games.

B. Simpson AP/JG (but only for a few minutes)/AA/DVFrom season 5 to the current day; 115 matches; 35 goals; no red cards and seven yellows; 9 international games

Bart Simpson is one of the players that will go down in SAEFL legend.  Brought by AP from transfer list in season 5 for 380k as an 8 22 FB, the player was soon earning rave reviews by all around him.

AA had missed out on his signature by a few thousand pounds, and were sniffing around the player even before he freaked out, becoming a 10.5 player in season 6.

After negotiating for a long time with AP, it looked as if a potential deal had slipped through the net despite an agreement being reached.  But JG did a deal with the Alcies that allowed Simo to move to The Pub for £1.7 million – a huge amount of money in those days.

Some managers scoffed at the thought of paying such a serious amount of cash for a FB – but with AA’s defensive line already consisting of men such as Mills and Sylfar, Simpson and AA flourished.  Simpson was the captain of the club, both on and off the pitch.

Soon, Sylfar was picking up all sorts of awards.

Bart won the player of the season in SAEFL three years running – in seasons 7, 8 and 9 (and obviously the defensive award).  No other player has EVER done that (CF Goonie won the award twice), and no other defender has ever won the player of the season award at all!

He also holds the EMP record for a defender – 433.81 EMP in season 8.

His pure genius captained the side to their second championship in season 8 – their first for a number of years.

In the twilight of his career, Simo was awarded a free transfer to new Division 3 side DV as a mark of respect for his contribution to AA.  But Simo is not quite finished – this season has seen him pick up a 1.5NSL bonus to once again become a major force in SAEFL.

115 games and counting, no red cards, 9 international games, 3 player of the season awards, titles and many, many winning performances.  Simpson will indeed take some beating in this category.

B. Berlinnin CA/NWseason one to season 10; 141 games, 34 goals; 6 yellows, no reds; 11 international games

If there is one player that could be said to match Simpson for sheer quality in SAEFL as a defender, and especially as a FB, then B. Berlinnin is your man.

His career in SAEFL hardly started in a blaze of glory and publicity.  In fact, CA signed him in season 1 as a 3.75 NSL 18 year old for a mere 40k.

But there were already signs that this lad would truly turn out to be a man.  When he was put on the transfer list, Peter mentioned “lets see who cares about the future”.  Hmm.

When CA purchased BB, Peter again commented: “I cannot believe he only went for 40k!”.  Perhaps the Commy knew more than he was letting on @;-)

Berlinnin didn’t become a star overnight.  But his 5 5 stats meant his quality was without question.  After a season, he was a regular starter in CA’s very useful side, and he then captained Catbel to a league championship in Season 3.

For the next season and a half, Berlinnin, as a club leader, grew in authority, and finally reached his potential when half way through season 5, he freaked.

CA were not quite the driving force in season 5 that they were in early days mind, and soon other clubs came a sniffing.  But while some clubs (like AA J) would have liked Berlinnin, but guessed CA would not sell, other clubs were not to be put off.

And offering a massive (but still NW friendly) deal, Mike got his man in Season 6.  NW were building a empire, and how could Berlinnin not be a part of that plan?

His superb performances at the back meant that, despite not being a defensive outfit, NW were difficult to break down.  He won his second and third championship medal with Noshaki in seasons 6 and 7, as well as the league and cup double in season 7.

Berlinnin slowed down a little before retiring in season 10.  He didn’t win player of the season awards (other than season 6, when he was defender of the year) because his sides played offensive football.  But his stats say it all.

Over 140 games in a period spanning 11 seasons (albeit helped by his early start and the 1 ageing rule for the first couple seasons), no red cards in 141 games!, not to mention 11 international appearances.

The decision of FB might indeed be the most difficult SAEFL owners have to make.

C. Cafu LUfrom season 3, retired end season 9; 101 games, 24 goals; 4 yellows and no red cards; 13 international games

Cafu, like Campbell and Gnasher, was a player that played for a solitary team in his 7 season career, despite other clubs courting his services for a long time.

He was also the third FB to freak after Berlinnin and Simpson.  He formed the mainstay of a LU team that regularly used his defensive skills in a ZD tactic.

Cafu did not quite have the longevity of Simpson or Berlinnin, but he still managed over 100 appearances, and, more impressively still, 13 international caps – more than any other player on this list – and he formed an outstanding backline at England with Simpson.  The following stats, in a TC tactic v NZ in season 8, will give you the idea:

FB C. Cafu 12 15.77, FB B. Simpson * 12.5 20.11

LU will do better to have as good a defender as Cafu in the future.  The only Achilles Heel he had was his 2 2 stats.

L. Thuram AS/NW - season 2- halfway through season 9; 107 games, 26 goals; 8 yellows and no red cards; 3 internationals

Thuram probably didn’t stand out in a team of absolute stars at NW, where he played most of his 107 league games, but that doesn’t mean that Lillian didn’t pull his weight.

The Argentinian, a 3 3 stats player, was a regular in the NW side as they strolled to title success in seasons 6 and 7, and continued his good form as the club challenged AA and JG in seasona 8 and 9, before retiring, medals in pocket, and no doubt very happy indeed.

J. Noah AR/ JG / AA/THfrom season 5, retired end season 9; 82 games, 22 goals; 3 yellows and no red cards; 6 international games

Noah really never quite settled at any clubs, but if he is known for anyone in his career, if will be for his time at first AR, who he struggled to make competitive, and later at TH, where he won 2 cups, in seasons 7 and 8, and lost another in season 6.

Only 3 yellows in 82 games is testament to his fair play, and I am sure Mark will back me up when I say that most sides would have rather had this lad in their side, than face him.

B. Lees AA/NW/CAfrom season 3, retired end season 8; 78 games, 16 goals; 9 yellow cards and 4 red cards; 3 international games

Lees was another FB that saw action in three of the most well-known sides in SAEFL – AA, NW and CA.  A youth product for AA, he was pitched into battle in season 4, where he helped the club to one of many 2nd placed finishes in the top flight!

After a short stint at NW, he then moved to CA, where he continued to play very solid football.  An oddity is that he has amassed nearly as many red cards as yellows!

M. Lockwood – CA/AA/TH/AVfrom season 6, still playing; 85 games, 38 goals; 10 yellow cards and 3 red cards; 9 international games

Locky is the fourth, and most recent, of the FB freak line, on this list.  Matthew was signed by CA before being snapped up by AA.  Several good performances for the Alcies saw him coveted by TH.  I didn’t want to sell him, but Mark can be a persuasive lad J

Locky’s spell at TH will be the period that he will be best known for.  Not long after joining the club, he freaked out doh! Was heard all around West Yorkshire.

During his time at TH, Lockwood was used as the base of a defensive-minded TH side that gradually imposed itself on the SAEFL world – and his CP centred team was soon top of the pile, winning the championship in season 10 after cup success the year before – when Matt was at his best.

ML was not always the cleanest of players, but the now 30 something, who could well get to the ‘immortal’ 100 club at AV, is certainly a player who demands respect.

M. Brammer ES/OC/CA – from season 4, retired season 9; 81 games, 16 goals; 1 yellow card and no red cards; 2 international games

Brammer toom quite a while to get to the top, and he never really played for sides that gave him a chance to earn medals and records, but Brammer had good longeivity.  He ended his career on a down, as CA were relegated.

Has a great DP record, with only 1 yellow card to his name.

C. YangSawatsky HD/SH (same team) – from season 2 until season 7; 94 games, 4 goals; 2 yellow cards and 0 red cards; 2 international games

YingYang to his friends has the rather unique distinction of being the only man on this list to have played for one club with two names.  He was an excellent performer for SH through many seasons, and nearly made the ton up club.

THOR TJ/SH – from season 3 until end season 9; 86 games, 21 goals; 10 yellow and 8 red cards; 3 international games

Thor was an expert player through his time in SAEFL.  The ice man was very apt at stopping opponents, through fair means or foul.  And more often than not, this meant taking his marching orders for stopping a player illegally.

His 10 yellows and 8 red cards (a total of 120 DP, or nearly 1.5 DP per game) will be hard to match in this league.

J. Saul CA/TH/DT – from season 6, still playing; 68 games, 12 goals; 16 yellows and 8 red cards; 5 international games

But his record can be beaten by a man that still resides in SAEFL.  Saul may not have played the most games in this list – under 70 at his ripe old age would hardly get you a gig at this party; but his man is different.

An incredible 16 yellow cards and a shocking 8 reds – that’s 144 DP to you and me – makes this man the chopper harris of full backs.

Wingers all over this league will be glad when he hangs up his boots.

FB D. Unsworth TH/AV – from season 6, still playing; 75 games, 17 goals; 3 yellows and 0 reds; 11 international games

David Unsworth was at a TH side when they swept all before them in season 10, and has also picked up cup awards. He has also picked up an impressive 11 international caps.

His partner in crime at TH and now AV, S. DoubleOSeven, just missed out from making it to the shortlist.

FB R. Weasley CA – from season 9 – still playing; 40 games, 21 goals; 5 yellows and 1 red; 4 international games

Weasley is one of the younger FBs in this list, and one whose better days could still be in front of him.  Set to pick up a championship medal with CA this season, he has 4 international caps, which he will surely add to.

FB R. Carlos AS  - from season 9, still playing; 39 games, 12 goals; 2 yellows and 0 red cards; 2 international games

Carlos is another young player that is still at the peak of his game.  He has to do a lot of work if he wants to catch the likes of Berlinnin, Simpson and Campbell – but who knows?

C. Kampala AS/JG/TH – from season 8, still playing; 48 games, 12 goals; 2 yellows and 0 red cards; 4 international games

Kamapala has already been around three of the bigger changing rooms in the SAEFL world, and he has many years ahead of him.  Could well get towards the 100 mark if his quality stays high.

S. Tyler TB – from season 8, still playing; 60 games, 13 goals; 6 yellows and 2 red cards; 4 international games

TB are enjoying a great season, and this lad has been one of the chief reasons for their rise in the SAEFL world.  He’s not afraid to put his boot in, as his 2 reds suggest.

FB Horne EW/TB – season 4 - season 10; 96 games, 30 goals; 6 internationals; 9 yellows, no red cards

This man gave plenty of defenders the horn in his time with EW and especially TB.  A game player, he came very very close to that all important 100 games point, and will be very proud of his 6 international caps.

TB carry on their good tradition of FB today with Gentile, Skilgannon and Tyler.

Apocalypse

BELL PRAISES YOUNG GUNS

In a rare press statement, Apocalypse Manager Martin Bell, this week spoke of his delight at the recent victory over NoShaKi WC98 (NW), and particularly the performances of young centre backs F. Sinclair and G.

Cahill.

Cahill and Sinclair (alongside Knol) stepped up admirably to replace AP's three first-choice  10 NSL CBs, as they ran out 16-11 winners.

The win looks to have extinguished any chance of AP now being sucked into a

relegation battle, which looked likely (albeit unexpected) after the first

few weeks of the season.

Bell said:

"Everyone knows that AP are struggling a bit at the back with the

first-choice three.  They've been forced to play a lot of games and were in

need of a well-earned rest.

"I threw the young lads Cahill and Sinclair in, not expecting too much from

them, and I'm amazed at the quality of their performances.  These two are

ones to watch out for - there's no doubt about that.

He went on to say:

"I had sought to bring in a few new faces a couple of weeks ago, that wasn't

possible, but it looks like I've found the answer in the youth ranks.  If

they continue to develop as they are doing, and with a few tweaks to the

squad, I think we'll be a force next season."

LEG-END GETS CLOSER TO MILESTONE

AP manager Martin Bell called in the press pack this week to wish a Happy

Birthday to SAEFL legend-in-his-own-lunchtime, Nathan Fossey, the

long-standing manager of Alcoholics Anonymous.

Bell mocked "He's so old, I'm not sure they're even his own teeth."

The press-core sat back in amazement as Bell, informed the gathered hacks

that Fossey would be celebrating his final year as a twenty-something.

"Happy 29th Birthday Fossey" declared the AP head coach.

It was rumoured that as the journalists left the conference, many were

amazed that Fossey was just 29.  One unforgiving reporter said:

"Surely no-one can look that bad at 29, even if they are ginger."

F.C Inferno

A win!!! LU is for sure not pleased with the result of our last game, as we won 3-1 despite playing away. However, let’s not praise our team... We were lucky to see Nuno forgetting to pick up a tactic and took full benefit of this.

Now it's time to face TB. Jeroen's side is already out of the cup and is in a late rush for the title. Thus, we expect then to come with all guns blazing... can we stop them? Probably not, but this side is worth a try!

However, rumors on FI says that the manager will leave to team for a couple of beers in Germany! Is it true? No one could confirm this, but local newspapers said that there could be an interesting encounter in Leipzig, where manager Marco and Bart would play live the FI-JG semi-final...

InterQuartile Rangers

6 red cards and only 4 yellows.  But in some wierd bizzaro world the cards were concentrated on one team in each of several games.  So if you had a card in Div 1 last week, you were likely to have more than one!  As I said, very wierd.

A win is a win but there wasn't much to celebrate.  I agree we probably would have won despite EW getting 2 red cards.  But the ejections certainly helped.  The good news is that our 9 goals were spread out over 7 players.  The bad news is that our 9 goals were spread out over 7 players.  Not one player had a good game.  Keller did well in the goal until you compare him.  He EMPed higher, but not by much considering Manchester started with .25 less NSL.  And he had a much better save percentage.

As for this week's game, we're playing at home.  The question is is that plus a boost going to be enough?

The Boelewieten

The Boelewieten In Sight

OUr financial man is going crazy, this week again a enormous bod on a player,

and winning the bids means the third player this year choosing for TB. Van Poppel

is preparing for the next season, searching for some strong attackers and maybe trying to get

one or two cm's. We sniffed on the title this year, a shame that the first half this season we lost

valuable points.

This week again a tough game, and a bid counting that FI will res key players. But, we thought that also two weeks

ago when we had to play TH, and Mark surprised us, very, so we play this week the same team as last week. Enough for three

points and when CA loses this week, and AA loses, we are on for a big surprise.

We want second place, the money you know, we need that for buying players ;-)

DIVISION 2

Adirondak Renegades

Adirondak Press (AP): The comments for this weeks match listed 3 reasons AR lost to PN. There is s fourth that the commentator didn't mention.

Manager Fulmer (MF): And what would that be?

AP: The manager is an idiot!

MF: Excuse me.

AP: Didn't you select a line-up to play OFF tactics, and work on OFF tactics in preparation for the match.

MF: Ah..... yes.

AP: Didn't you give 2 players orders to mark Nol and Green in anticipation of playing OFF.

MF: I don't like where this is headed.

AP: Then, when it came time to give the players their actual match tactics, didn't you select ONE.

MF: Well, they both have 3 letters and start with O.

AP: They are TOTALLY DIFFERENT, YOU MORON!

MF: What's that sound? It is growing louder.

AP: Are you familiar with the story of Frankenstein? Think of yourself as Dr. Frankenstein. Remember the scene where the mob of angry towns people storms the castle to get the mad doctor?

MF: Ummmmm.

AP: We are having a reenactment of that famous scene right here, right now, with the angry mob of townspeople being played by very angry AR supporters, and you, the idiot manager, are playing the soon to be lynched doctor.

MF: But all I did was to pick the wrong tactics in a critical match.

AP: Tell the AR supporters that is all you did. Oops, too late. It seems the AR supporters have broken through the door and are "discussing" last weeks match with Manager Fulmer. Actually, it's more like they are yelling and screaming….and rearranging Fulmer's body parts. Manager Fulmer is just screaming.

MF: HELLLLLLLLP!

AP: Hey,  I just report the news. You're on your own here.

AP: Oops. Good bye. I'll clean up later.

AP: If any of you happen to know someone who would like to manage an SAEFL team, I think the AR fans just created an opening. Please contact Commissioner Babcock for further details.

This week we are playing our playing our last grudge, so hopefully it will be enough for us to win.  We are playing TJ, who are right above us in the standings but have 4 more points than us.  If we win, we will not pass them but we would at least move a lot closer to them and also farther away from the teams below us.

Last week, we played AR, and grudged them, and we also came out with a pretty big win, which is good of course.  As it turned out, we probably could have won without the grudge but you never know that until afterwards so it is okay.  This half of the season has been a lot better than the first half so far, when we only won like two games.  Hopefully, we will keep on winning and at least stay in the playoff zone and then who knows what will happen.

Stannington Historical

SH is right where they are expected to be. In the bottom place - 9 points from escaping the relegation. Is it possible to avoid the drop...the answer is YES!.....Is it likely at this stage of the season with the battered condition of SH's lineup.....the answer is probably NOT!

When asked to comment about this , Manager Lear stated," I said sometime ago that with the Kiddies Corp movement at SH . it wouldn't surprise me to see the SH lads go to D-3 for at least one season because all of our youngsters still haven't reached their potential in the aging process.

Sure, we have played quite nicely in the 2nd half of this season but realistically speaking, SH is still another season away from reaching their true potential.

SH has yet another match vs. AS in the ongoing Canadian rivalry. Lear said,"AS has had not the best of seasons....neither have we. I couldn't care less about this perceived rivalry. All I can say is,"May the best team win.

The Jazz

TJ played NH away last week and came away from the Gold trafford ground with a vital win to keep in the race for 2nd place. This week TJ face PN in a  game where both are involved in the race for the play off position, this will be a hard throught game which the TJ manger whats a win at home and if results go there way TJ could be in 2nd .

DIVISION 3

Adelaide Kickers

Kickers in Late Run?

After winning the last couple of games it looks as though the Kickers are making a late run for the playoffs.  Yes, that is correct, THE PLAYOFFS.

This all seemed to happen after a rival fan and myself included said that the fans were revolting.  Has this been the spark the team needed or is it just the fact of coming up against teams resting some of their players?  This week sees the Kickers playing against Vitesse Arnhem and i caught up with David to discuss the game and the recent form reversal.

SB:  Hello David.

DT: Hi Stephanie, what can I do for you?

SB:  Just want to give our readers some insight into this week's game and the recent form reversal.  Do you have time to talk?

DT:  (looks stephanie up and down in her tight fitting summer clothing though it is the middle of winter)  Sure Steph, anytime. (winks at her)

SB:  (blushes) Thanks David.  Firstly this week sees the boys playing against VA, how do you see the game panning out?

DT:  VA are a good team but only really on about the same level as us.  They are only 5 points in front of us and a win this week away could put us even closer to making the playoffs.

SB:  It should be a good game and a close run to the playoffs which brings me to the form reversal.

DT:  What about it?

SB:  What do you attribute it to?  Is it just a case of the oppostion being weaker or resting their good players or is it something else.

DT:  The comments the other week about our fans revolting and leaving the club stung us.  The playing group took a good look at themselves and thought hey, if the fans are doing this now, what fans are going to be left if we keep losing.

SB:  Go on.

DT:  We then started to go back to basics.  Nothing fancy on the pitch except for a couple of long range strikes from outside the box which if they didn't go in the forwards were there for the easy tap in.  We have also be working hard in training on our set pieces, offensively AND defensively.

SB:  There are some tough games and top sides coming up in the final few games, do you think the club can make the playoffs?

DT:  Anything is possible.  We are playing well at the moment and it just takes a loss or two in those teams just in the playoffs and us to keep winning to make it.  If we don't make it then at least we will put up a fight and only just miss out.   Our goal difference from the middle of the season may come back to haunt us though.

SB: Thanks for you time David.

DT: (checks her out again) As I said before Steph, anytime.

They you have it Kickers fans, the players are confident and so is the manager.  so let's get behind them and help them push for the playoffs.

Keep on Kicking!

With the championship so close I cant afford to make any mistakes…. And this being the hardest week - facing TS, FU and DV all in a row… Good Luck to everyone!

Falcons

Falcons surprised themselves last week with an impressive performance away to FE. Man of the Match Darren Dunkin was in inspired form to deny FE a victory. This week see us against SS and we could possibly move out of the red.

Fanatics United

Crap, I don't believe you Grude Carded me DV. Why? It's not as if you are going to win the league, you are in the playoffs. I now cannot win the league. I was the only team that could beat DT and be on top of the league, but now you have just handed it to them.

Anyway, to the home game with no morale. The fans should be entertained by the brother and sister Squigs on the field, I hope there twin combination will work. It is going to be the most watched match in division 3 and should be a kicker of a game.

P.S. Travis, one eye open there, but I think you are going to need both.
