PRESS REPORT

AA PRESS

IT’S CRUNCH TIME – SUCCESS OR FAILURE

BECONS FOR DIVISION 1 PACE SETTERS

(Well, that was the press plan this week)

A shortened press this week, with the World Cup and all taking my eye off the press ball.  I was going to comment on the three teams that are battling it out for SAEFL honours in what is the closest Division 1 battle in quite some time.

But as the website is down (come on Peter!) I thought I’d suggest how CA, TB and AA match up to their World Cup equivalents.

CA

CA are the big guns right now; but they are also a side steeped in history.  A real threat from when the league was conceived, they went through a rough patch a few seasons ago before coming back as an uber-side this term.

As a side, they most effectively resemble Argentina – a dirty, disgraceful side; sorry, a side that were hugely impressive in the past, reaching numerous World Cup finals and winning plenty with the likes of Maradona in their side.

’98 and ’02 saw underachievement – especially last time out – but they look the cream of the crop right now  - systematically destroying defensive-minded sides and they surely must stand a huge chance of lifting the WC trophy come the second week in July.

TB

TB are an up and coming side.  They have always been in the middle of the pack – a team that you couldn’t really ignore, but a side that were never going to challenge on a week in, week out basis.

This has changed in Season 11 as Jer has built an awesome EMPing team that has really surprised a number of managers in SAEFL, and could yet lead them to the ultimate prize.

They most closely resemble Spain – a team that has been around the middle tier of world football despite having some of the most technically proficient players around.  What they have never had is a unit – 11 players and a few more from the bench that can sustain a decent tournament.  The 2006 Spain squad looks different.  Don’t bet against TB and Spain going all the way in a few weeks time.

AA

Fair enough, AA have won the main prize in SAEFL twice; but let’s be honest, they are the perennial brides.  Always looking superb, but never quite taking the goods home with them.

Now let’s think of a side that have had quality players in every World Cup since about day dot, and have even reached a couple WC finals, but have always bottled it.  Hmm … who can I be thinking of?

As yes, that would be the Netherlands – AKA Holland J  Even with the mastery of Cruyff, they still failed to win in ’74.  Even with the brilliance of Bergkamp, they couldn’t take the prize in the 90s (did they even qualify last time?).

This time, Holland have the skills of Van Persie, the wing-play of Robben, and the scoring touch of Van Nistelrooy; not to mention the defensive skills of … hold on, they don’t have any – maybe they are nothing like AA J

Anyway, what I was going to say is, despite these players, you know, just like England, Portugal and Spain, the WC will end in indignity for Holland (and probably an off-field bust-up).

That means it’s CA for the title, and Argentina for the World Cup folks.

Well, the boost was enough, barely.  Looking at the results I'm at a loss to explain it.  I guess the difference in keepers was the deciding factor.  Our finishing leaves a lot to be desired.  Robinho was the only one wiith better than 50% althoughHamm and Wambach shot 50% each.  But a win is a win.  I'm glad a boost was enough since I need the grudges for the cup matches.

The grudge was well spent in the cup match.  The total EMP wasn't in our favor, but looking more closely at the offence vs defence it's less of a close-run thing.  My offense was almost twice his defence, while his offense was less than twice my defence.  There is also a significant difference in the keepers as well.  Now that I think about it, I'm a little disappointed that the goal difference wasn't a little larger....

Last week a deserved win, this week an away game against the leader CA. We are going

full force against them. Leaving Donaldson out of the team, he might get a coloured card, and DM W. EllDone gets a

chance to show his manager what he is capable of. In the fist half this season we drew against CA, this time the grudge can

make the difference. I hope AA will lose this week, that would give as a really good shot at the title this year.

Maybe we keep the last grudge in the povket for a home match, I want to come close to the 160 emp, en hope tho cross that barrier

next season. With the new CF gained from the transferlist, finally a player again with rising nsl in a attacking position (and for 820 K I hope so)

we are confident, ok, first CA, a Dutch clash, and still friends with manager Kroon, still......

Adirondak Renegades

Adirondak Press (AP): AR gave up one shot too many this week.

Manager Fulmer (MF): Yes we did. We gave up one.

AP: And you failed to save it.

MF: And your point is?

AP: My point is your side when you play defensive tactics is better but not good enough.

MF: I'll buy that. At least now good enough yet. We can stay competitive bit it is still not a winning tactic for us against a strong side like GU. Hopefully we still will improve. 4 of our top 6 defenders are 25 years old so they hopefully have time to figure this out.

AP: I hear you are trying to find some players to strengthen AR defense.

MF: Yes, our sort of good defense is still not good enough. We need help at CB or DS.

AP: What AR players could be available for defensive help.

MF: Because of our depth in other areas, we can make some strong players available. They include:

CM H VanderWesthuizen 24 9.0

WH W. Hell 24 9.75

FB T Barker 25 8.5 with great stats

AP: Those are some excellant players. You must be looking for some strong defenders.

MF: We are. AR has a lot of fairly good defenders, but we must improve to make our goal of promoting to Division 1 after season 12.

AP: What about promotion this season? You are still in the race for a playoff spot.

MF: We will try hard to make the playoffs, of course, but our focus is still on next season. We will not make any trade to bring in a player this season unless we thing he will still be a strong performer next season.

African Selection

Ok, so the Selects travel to the Someplace Old Stadium and they had the home side a good old whooping. Seven shots, six goals. It is good to see the Selects have become a little more efficient over the years. I can remember games with double digit shots and six goals. Now we have a task that looms just as large. A game against the team above in the table...Melchester Rovers. This is an important game as it is a six point game with the winner really making a case for getting out of the relegation zone.

The Selects are going with vitually an identical line up. The only change is CB Hofland coming in to play his 72nd match for the Selects in place of the suspended Walker. We are playing a defensive game, hoping the Rovers will play a defensive game as well, but you never know with 5 matches to go!

Well, our last grudge card did us some good.  We got another win but are still in fifth place.  This is not the greatest place to be in but hopefully, we will at least make the playoffs.  We are in good shape to do that so we will see how the rest of the season plays out.  This week we play DS, who are below us in the standings but we played a boost just to make sure we get the three points.  As long as they do not play a grudge, we should win, hopefully at least.

Adelaide Kickers

Is Love In The Air?

With the Kickers playing well at the pointy end of the season, is it no wonder that anyone and everyone to do with the Adelaide team is so excited that love could possibly be in the air.

Manager David Thomas and Team sportswriter for this paper, Stephanie Burrows have been seen around town a little bit this week.  She is supposedly off this week which is why I am doing the report.  Is it just a flu bug or is it the <b>"Love Bug?"</b>

Anyway, back to the team.  The kickers won last week 11-5 against Vitesse Arnhem.  VA were without their manager last week as he was in fact one of the 272 people locked out of the ground.  This was Adelaide's first lock out of the season and with the playoff race intensifying, surely nor to be the last.  Adelaide's 11 goals came on only 19 shots too as the team had their radars and kicking boots on.

This week sees them in an easier game against Falcons FC who beat the speedsters 16-5 last week.  But with freak AM Mats Swansson picking up a knock last week, he will surely be rested as will some of the other players too ready for the game away next week to the Fanatics.

Let's get out their and support the boys in their push for the playoffs.

Greetings all this week sees the great Wayne United up against the great and Speedy Speedsters. Wayne Uniteds spirits are high this week after the amazing and powerful crushing of Fantastic eleven last week. The team has kept a very level head after that game as they know that letting last weeks game go to their head will run a large risk of effecting this weeks performance.

See you in the stands!

Defrosted TunaFish

Press: Press : Having the title so close in ur grasp - u guys managed a very close game and got a draw, how ur feelings on this?

DT : was a great game - congrats to both teams, little disappointed in the injury of our keeper - could have of made a very small difference in the outcome of the game if he had stayed on - but no the less, was very close a good result 21-21 and im sure the both teams fans appreciated a great game of footie

Press- so now the title race is back on - how do you fare against a very impressive DV side this week? Any surprises?

DT : DV are a great side, they having a good run at the moment and we are pretty sure they are going to grudge us this week - we are most likely the only team that stands in the way of the title for FU - so im sure FU hoping that they do :) otherwise, Cone our keeper is out for this game, he making a great recovery tho, and as for the rest of the team - lil upset that Tristan our star W wont make it as he has been suspended.

Press :  So it’s the only 2 changes to ur side?

DT :  indeed, and surprisingly we have a higher NSL team that played against FU - but the EMP ratio wont be as good - so, we are going to grudge DV this week to counter his Grudge - also because we are morale 0 and he has a morale 2 - lucky we do have a Home advantage

Press : Great! Can’t wait - Good luck then!

A solid victory against the speedsters laid a platform for us to hopefully move out of the red this week. It's not going to be easy this week as we are playing a team that is higher than us on the log.

Fanatics United

Suck, Suck, Suck, Suck. I would rather have lost the game, no commish don't get any ideas, it would have been a better game than a draw. Ooh well that means if we come first and second it is a draw first because matched up we are equall. For those people not watching the league I am talking about my last game against DT.
