DIVISION 2 GAMES

Melchester Rovers and African Selection are the nrs. 10 and 11 on the table. They are of course trying hard to escape relegation, and when you know that the nr. 9, Newton Heath, is 4 points away, and that after this match, there are only 4 matches left, you know that either MR or AS HAVE to win this game in order to keep trying to avoid relegation. Colin apparantly understood the importance of this more than Bruce, as he played a grudge where Bruce just left it there. The grudge made that the difference between AS and MR was no less than 13 EMP, and it would have even been more if Colin would have chosen CP instead of ZD, as ZD gave a lot of bonus to MR’s WP players. Nonetheless, the AS defense was too good for the MR attack, as MR did not create a single chance. AS was a lot better, they created 4 chances. But Colin was very, very unlucky to see GK Seaman becoming the hero of the day, saving all those 4 chances, and that resulted in a 0-0 final result. A point each for both teams, but that is actually 2 less than they need in their race to stay in div 2.

Adirondak Renegades and The Jazz are the numbers 7 and 4 on the table. They are both teams fighting for a playoff spot, and in the current situation, TJ is on a playoff spot, and AR is not. Time to do something about that, must Don have thought, as he played a grudge and tried to climb the table, at the expense of a competitor. And Don can be happy, as his plan worked. AR’s ONE was a lot stronger than the CP that Stewart had in mind for TJ, and the almost 20 EMP difference led to 24 chances for AR against 7 for TJ. In fact, Stewart was a little lucky that AR’s victory wasn’t higher but hey, that of course had something to do with the fact that TJ had a better GK. Nonetheless, the 3 points in the end were for AR. AR are still 2 points behind TJ now, but they can pass DS if DS don’t win their game…..

…..and it turns out that Dead Scientists in fact do not win their game! In a home match against Point of Napier, Tim suffers from the same problem that he suffered from in earlier seasons. The DS squad is not that big when it comes to players NSL 8 or up, and so the DS players play a lot of matches. That causes injuries at the end of the season, and this is just another one of those matches. Those injuries, plus the fact that Kelly played a boost, were too much for DS: PN was better, they had more EMP and more chances, and in the end they also had more goals: 11-8. DS drop to 7th position, just out of the playoff places, although AR is only 1 point away. PN are the nr. 5 on the table, and with this win they very much stay in the race for those playoffs.

SAEFL SEASON 11 WEEK 21

Stannington Historical and Druss Legends are 2 teams for whom the season actually is over. They are both out of the cup, so that is no issue anymore. DL already won the title last week, so they don’t have to fight for that anymore. SH is the number last on the table, and although in theory they still have a chance, it is unlikely that they will pass 3 teams on the table with only 5 matches left. Especially if they have to play against the leader of the table. And this match shows that the difference between DL and SH is just too big this season. Len played a nice team, and his OFF tactics was well chosen, so there’s absolutely nothing that he did wrong, but Martijn’s team, even when resting some players, is just too strong for div 2. Next season, Martijn will play against tougher opponents, that’s for sure.

I could easily describe this game with a minimum use of characters: “GU game: 0-0” That would probably say it all, and else I would start repeating myself. In this case, Newton Heath and Grammar United were equally strong, and the draw was deserved. The 1 point eacht made that Robert made sure that the gap between NH and the relegation zone remained 4 points, while Michael keeps a good chance at the nr. 2 position, meaning direct promotion to div 1.
