DIVISION 1 GAMES

After CA’s smashing defeat against TB last week, Alcohol Anonymous took the lead in division 1, because they kept on winning and winning their games week after week. And finally, after chasing CA for 18 matches, Nathan managed to be the nr. 1 in SAEFL. In their first match as the leage leader however, AA are left empty handed in the match against InterQuartile Rangers. Was the pressure too much for AA? Nah, I don’t think so. There are 3 things in this match: 1) IQ is 6 points away from the relegation zone, and since you never know, they wanted to be sure, and fielded a good team. That team reached to almost 130 EMP 2) The red card for FB Edinburgh caused a loss of 11.94 EMP. 3) AA played ZD. Put those 3 things together, and you’ll see that even if the FB would have played the entire match, the difference in AA’s favour would have been 3.5 EMP, which is not enough for a smother shot. So, AA would not have won this game anyway –although they most likely wouldn’t have lost it either- as IQ just played too strong a team. Nathan now has to wait what CA will do to see if AA can still lead the table, or fall back to position 2 again, while Terry will keep the gap with the relegation zone at least 6 points, and with 3 matches left, that looks like it will be enough. Although you can never be sure of course, especially with a team like NW trying to escape relegation.

SAEFL SEASON 11 WEEK 22

And Mike already proves that in the next match: in the clash between last years champion and runner up (you’d almost forget about that, at this stage of this season!), Mike used a boost to secure a good result against Tottenford Heats, and that did it for NoShaKi WC’98: they won the match 19-11. In fact, the boost made that both teams EMP was alike, and they both were awarded –almost- the same number of chances: 32 for TH against 31 for NW. Both teams without a top GK (both NSL 9), a lot of chances were expected. However, NW’s Cech was in much better form than his opponent, and was the hero of the day when he saved almost twice as many chances. That lead to a win for NW, and Mike will be happy to see that NW is getting closer to a miraculous escape. However, since IQ just won their match as well, Mike has to hope that OC lose points if he wants to bring NW to safety. Mark won’t care too much. He is aiming at the cup, and when it comes to the league, TH’s season is already over for quite a while.

SAEFL SEASON 11 WEEK 22

The result of the match between Oaklake City and Catbel Athletic is not just important for Keith and Ivo, it will also be followed with interest by Mike and Nathan. And where Mike and Ivo will be happy with the result, Keith and Nathan will not be pleased. But the difference between OC and CA in this game was simply too big. Even if FB Gonzalez wouldn’t have seen a red card, and OC would have had 10 EMP more (because that was what he missed because of it), the difference would still have been 15 EMP in CA’s favour, so this match had victory for CA written all over it. So, after changes places with AA last week, CA climb back to the top spot, and with only 3 matches left they are only 1 point ahead, so the excitement in the top of the league will be there until the very end. Especially when you consider that TB is getting closer and closer as well. For OC, this loss is a tough one, as now they drop into the relegation zone. They have as many points as NW, but after this weeks results, NW has the better goal difference.

SAEFL SEASON 11 WEEK 22

I just mentioned that TB was getting closer to the top, well: here’s another match that proves that. The Boelewieten were 2 points behind CA and 4 points behind AA last week. But we already saw AA lose their match this week. Jeroen had another grudge left, and who better to play it against than another friend: Bart. (He must have so many friends, he can afford to lose a few). With a strong CP play and that grudge I mentioned, TB was strong enough to play their own game against JG’s Wingplay, instead of turning to tricks like OFF. JG played a strong team, even though they are still in the cup and don’t have to care about the league anymore, as they are safe from relegation and they are out of the race for the title. But in spite of the nice team that Bart put on the pitch, it was not enough to trouble TB and the victory was deserved. TB are only 1 point behind AA now, and 2 behind CA, so things are very, very exciting at the top. They don’t play against each other anymore, but will they be able to win matches against the other teams? Let’s have a look: CA play against EW (Home), JG (Away) and IQ (H) AA play against JG (H), AP (A) and NW (H) TB play against IQ (H), NW(A) and AP (H) All 3 teams play 2 home games and 1 away game, but that doesn’t say much of course. Will be continued….

SAEFL SEASON 11 WEEK 22

Although relegation is not sure yet for Excelsior Warren, it will be a tough job for Simon to escape it. This home game against FC Inferno was a great opportunity to get a good results and keep up the hopes for such an escape. EW played a strong team and a grudge, and that was enough to be a lot better than FI who, although Marco’s first priority of course is in the cup, put up a pretty nice team as well. However, in spite of this effort, this match also showed what EW missed this season: luck. They were unfortunate againg: Out of the 6 chances they created, they managed to score only 1, which was just as much as FI scored out of 2 chances! Another point for EW, but after having seen NW and IQ win their match this week, I am afraid that this single point will not be enough to keep EW in division 1 this season.

SAEFL SEASON 11 WEEK 22

The match between Apocalypse and Lisbon United, is a battle between two teams in the lower half of the table. It’s only because of the ranking in the league table (AP is the nr. 7) that you can’t call this a relegation battle. But looking closer, you might as well. The difference between AP and LU is 7 points, so if Nuno would win this match, LU would catch up and make the difference 4 points with 3 matches left. Now that is something that can be done. Besides, we have already seen IQ and NW win their match this week, so AP isn’t safe from relegation yet. Especially when you think that AP’s last 3 games are against TH, AA and TB. So, AP has every reason to win because they want to stay away from the danger line, while LU has every reason to win because they want to get on the good side of the danger line. In this particular match, Martin could have won the 3 points that AP needed to be quite safe, and that would have meant that LU would have been in div 2 with already one leg. However, their wasn’t much difference between them. Sure, the red card and the injury make it look like AP was unlucky, but that was only in a later stadium of the game, it didn’t have much influence. LU was slightly better in EMP, and they didn’t give that away, not in chances and not in goals. Another 3 points for LU, and Nuno still has chances to stay in the top flight, although he really has to make sure that he gives it a 100% in these last 3 matches. In fact, he should have to play every game like he’s playing against CA, because apparantly that’s when LU are at their best. AP is still safe, and on the good side from the relegation zone, but Martin has to watch out: with all those bottom half teams winning points, he sure has to win some points himself. Does this mean that he has to make a “Jeroen-move” against his good friend Nathan? We will know about that in a week or 2……….
