DIVISION 2 GAMES

Melchester Rovers and Adirondak Renegades both have something to fight for. Bruce is trying to keep MR in division 2, while Don is doing his best to reach the playoffs with AR. However, where Bruce used a grudge as an extra incentive, Don just left it there. But Don was lucky. MR put up a team with more NSL, but they were unlucky to see that their Striker left the field with an injury, and was replaced with a Striker with less NSL. After that, they were even more unlucky, to see that yet another striker got injured, and couldn’t even be replaced as there were no replacement strikers left. Don was unlucky too, to see his WH leave the field with a red card, but it didn’t make as much of a difference as the injuries, so AR was still better than MR. AR created twice as many chances, and since their GK, although with less NSL, performed better than MR’s GK, the victory was even bigger than they deserved: 6-1. MR will have to hope for a miracle to escape a fall to div 3, and AR will at least be in the playoff zone for another week, and will be curious what DS have done this week…

SAEFL SEASON 11 WEEK 22

Druss Legends are the div 2 champions for some weeks now, but in the clash against Grammar United, the nr. 3 on the table -but only on goal difference- and a serious candidate for the nr. 2 position and thus direct promotion, they show that they still take every game serious and beat GU 3-0. That is what you would think when you just look at the score. But the truth is different, and is very harsh for Michael. Sure, Martijn shows himself to be a good sportsman, and goes for a good result, even plays a boost to help him do that. But for GU there was more at stake of course, as they want to beat EU in the race for the runner up position. They played their best team and a grudge. They played a strong defensive TS against DL's Wingplay (so, no OFF-concessions), and were in fact much better, almost 9 EMP. In spite of their strong attack, DL could not create 1 chance, whereas GU created 3. But now it comes: whether it was due to nerves or something else, all 3 chances for GU were missed. Too bad to miss a victory, but still a point won in the race for the title. However, that was just the beginning of GU's bad luck. On top of that, DL were not given one, not two, but no less than 3 penalties!! And of course, in a situation like this, you will always see that all those 3 penalties are scored without any problem. So, with all respect Martijn, this is a very, very undeserved win for DL. I can understand that feeling robbed is an understatement of what Michael will feel. (I know, I've been there. In the history of SAEFL this happened once before, and that was last season). Anyway, there are still 3 matches left to play, and even though we don't know yet what EU will have done, GU will be 3 points behind maximum, so nothing that can't be fixed. It just shouldn't have happened.

SAEFL SEASON 11 WEEK 22

The match between the African Selects and Newton Heath promised to be one of the most exciting matches this week, as 2 relegation candidates are battling each other. NH is in position 9, 5 points ahead of AS, who are in position 11. AS needed a win to keep their hopes up, and of course Colin played a boost. But that wasn't enough to trouble Robert, as not only did he have a grudge left to counter that boost, he also had the better mix of players and tactics, and that was what made NH a lot better than AS: almost 11.5 EMP. That lead to a victory for NH that was no more than fair, and will be a huge step for NH to be safe from relegation. With 3 games left to play and now 8 points ahead, I don't see AS catching up with NH anymore. Since we also saw MR lose their game this week, I don't see MR catching up that 7 point gap, and although it's not official yet, I dare to say that NH made it and will be playing in div 2 next season as well. Well done Robert! Colin won't be as happy. He still has a chance if ES don't win their match, but it gets more and more difficult

SAEFL SEASON 11 WEEK 22

England U21 is one of this seasons revelations. At the beginning of the season, I wouldn't have predicted that they would be fighting for direct promotion. But here you can see what happens when a new manager takes over with a lot of enthousiasm, in his second season after having learned and experienced in his first season. Well, that and a good aging of course, because let's face it EU had a good one. We already saw GU lose their match (unfortunate) against DL, so what would EU do. They would have a tough opponent this week in Dead Scientists, as DS is fighting for the playoffs, only 1 point behind AR, and of course Tim is going for it! Tim even played a boost to help him get a good result. But his good effort was blown away by a red card for FB Neill and an injury for S. Aloisi. And all that was left was a better EU side, controlling the game, and taking home the 3 points: 12-2. Mike will be happy, as he is 3 points ahead of GU now, and he also has a better goal difference. But with 3 matches left, 3 points is not that much of course, so the excitement in div 2 will continue until the very end. DS lose important points in their fight for the playoffs. They are 4 points behind AR now, and only if TJ lose this week, they can keep the playoffs at a 3 point gap

SAEFL SEASON 11 WEEK 22

It was already official that Stannington Historical will be playing in div 3 next season. With his young team Len will most likely finally play for the top positions again, but that is for the future. What is more important now is this seasons result, and in that case, our focus will be on Point of Napier this week. We already discussed that EU would benefit from GU's loss, but what wasn't mentioned yet in that aspect, was PN. Kelly didn't have a very good start of the season with PN, but slowly and surely PN recovered, started climbing the table, and last week we could find them on the nr. 4 position, 3 points behind GU. Since PN, because of their attacking play, has a much better goal difference, PN had the opportunity to jump to 3rd position by winning this weeks game. And with all respect to Len and this seasons SH, that could be possible. Looking at the NSL both teams put on the pitch (including a boost for PN!), the difference between them wasn't even that big. But the red card for the Stannington goalie (another match with bad luck for Len, I hope this will change too next season), plus the better position play for PN made it that PN was the better team. Out of 5 chances, they only managed to score once, but you only need 1 goal more than your opponent to win a match, so the 3 points are for PN. With this win PN also stay in the race for direct promotion, but even if they won't make that, Kelly has playoff experience and will be ready!

SAEFL SEASON 11 WEEK 22

England Storm is the nr. 8 on the table, and after we have already seen NH win their match this week, ES is the team to catch for AS and MR. This weeks match could be difficult, as Peter played a home game with ES against The Jazz. TJ is another team fighting for a playoff spot, and in fact they are already on a playoff position, but the best way to make it stay that way is by winning matches, and is of course exactly what Stewart has in mind. No easy job, but Peter knows that grudges are made to make those jobs easier, and that is exactly what happened in this game. The 10% bonus is exactly what made the difference, what made ES better than TJ, and what made that ES got 26 shots against 16. That was enough to win the game: 12-4 With this victory, I think ES are too, although not official, safe from relegation, as 7 and 8 points are just too much to overcome in 3 matches for teams that already aren't in the winning mood. Peter will be happy to see that next season he'll be playing in div 2 again, and Stewart will probably be relieved that DS lost their match this week, so his playoff position is just as safe as last week.
