DIVISION 1 GAMES

InterQuartile Rangers against FC Inferno is the clash between 2 teams that we could see in the semi-finals of the cup earlier this week. In that semi-final, the results for Terry and Marco weren’t the same (IQ made the final, FI didn’t), and in this match it is no different. With 29 and 30 points (with the 1 point difference in FI’s favor), both teams were already safe from relegation, and since both teams did not have their priorities in the league this season, this match wasn’t very important for them, you’d think. However, that is not how Terry and Marco approached this match. Terry did not save any of his players, just to make sure they can play in the final (although he probably will next week) and he even played a boost. Marco also appeared to be keen on defending that 5th spot, as he played with some players who he might have rested if he still were in the cup. The match wasn’t without casualties, as IQ saw a player leave with a red card, and FI saw 2 players leave the field injured. That made that the teams were almost equally strong. Almost I said, as in the end I guess it was the boost that Terry played that made the difference. That was just enough for a narrow victory: 1-0. 3 points for IQ, and these 3 points turn out to be important to, as it makes that IQ and FI switch places.

SAEFL SEASON 11 WEEK 24

NoShaKi WC ’98 is still in the danger zone, where they actually have been all season. And yet, in spite of that, you still think that the mighty NW will survive. In this weeks match against The Boelewieten, they set an example of why you keep thinking that: when it really comes down to it, NW knows how to perform. They always manage to get the players for the job, whatever that job is, and with Mike they have one of the best managers around. Even in this match against the nr. 3 of the table, TB, who were in the race for the title until last week (well, in theory even until this week), Mike just went for it and did it. In spite of the solid CP that Jeroen put up, Mike played ZD with a boost, and NW got no less than 138.08 EMP. Makes you wonder why they didn’t do that much more this season, because when you know that NW is capable of this, they don’t need to be in the relegation zone, right? Nothing is sure yet, and for the final decisions we have to wait until next weeks matches, but these 3 points might turn out to be very important in NW’s fight against relegation. Now we have to wait what LU, OC and AP have done. For Jeroen it means that TB will be 3rd. But I guess that where TB belongs, after evaluating this season, and looking at the TB results in the past 3 seasons, I think it’s a great performance.

SAEFL SEASON 11 WEEK 24

Apocalypse and Alcohol Anonymous are 2 teams that are still fighting for something. AP is fighting to stay in div 1 (they are already on the safe side of the relegation line, but of course they want to stay there), and AA of course is still in the race for the title. Both Martin and Nathan played their best teams, and went for the maximum result. We already saw this before when Jeroen and Mark tackled CA: in SAEFL, it apparantly doesn’t mean a thing when you are friends in RL. In fact, these guys are even the ones you have to most watch out for! In this particular case, it was Martin who might have ended Nathans title aspirations (we still have to wait what CA have done), when AP beat AA 16-10. The difference between both teams wasn’t even that big, but there was a difference, and that was in AP’s favor. No doubt the victory for AP is fair, and these 3 points make that we will see AP playing in div 1 again next year. AA was unlucky to see Pulmao leave the field early, because he is such a good performing player, it will sure have made difference in EMP. Nathan now has to hope for a miracle, AA were already 1 point behind CA, so with 1 match to go, they have to hope that CA didn’t win this weeks match.

SAEFL SEASON 11 WEEK 24

Oaklake City is another team in the relegation zone, who still have chances to escape relegation. This weeks match could be a good opportunity to win 3 very important points, as they play a home match against Tottenford Heats. TH lost in the semi-finals of the cup earlier this week, and since they are safe and sound on position 7, with 29 points, they have nothing more to fight for. They are safe from relegation, and the top 3 is out of reach. Keith played a strong team, but since Mark is out of the cup, he doesn’t have to save his team anymore, and he’s not the kind of manager to give away any presents, so he also played a strong team. TH saw a red card for Cahill, and that made both teams just as strong (TH could have been 5 EMP stronger). 32 chances for TH, against 31 for OC, but considering the fact that OC had a NSL 10 GK, against “only” NSL 9 for TH, you’d expect OC to win. However, the TH goalie had a superb day, and saved almost as many chances as his opponent. TH didn’t deserve to win though, and they didn’t: a 14-14. 1 point for OC, but it’s 2 points less than they needed, and could have had. Because their goal difference is worse than LU, Keith now has to hope that LU didn’t win this week, or their chances of escaping relegation are only theoretical.

SAEFL SEASON 11 WEEK 24

Here’s the match that Nathan has been waiting for: Jazz Greats against Catbel Athletic. And for Nathan, the result is not what he might have hoped for, as CA wins. Not just the match, but with these 3 points they also win the title. Bart did not give this match away really, but you can see that he saved a number of his best players, because the cup final is after the next match. They players he sent on the pitch for this match were good players too, but they weren’t as good as the players that Ivo sent on the pitch. Playing OFF and still reaching 123 EMP says a lot: CA simply had the best team this season. That, plus the fact that JG is very predictable this season since they only have 1 tactics in WP, made that this game had CA’s name on it from the beginning. CA are 4 points ahead of AA now with 1 match to go, so after winning the div 2 championship last season, Ivo marches on and wins division 1 with a team that just promoted. That must be unique in SAEFL, I think. Well, I think that CA was the best team this season, and that winning the title was deserved. But that was only because teams like AA, TH, NW and TB decided to use this season for rebuilding. Not only were these teams not as strong as they can be, because of that, but it also gave Ivo the opportunity to buy some of their best players (Thor, Damaseb, Garanhao, Bremmner) to make CA stronger. When you consider how exciting the fight for the title has been until –almost- the very end, especially with AA, it shows that Ivo’s decision to go for it this season was the right one (lucky!), as you don’t want to know how strong AA, TB and TH will be next season, with all their rising talents with young stats. A team that is just as strong as CA is now, won’t have a chance against them, I think. Nonetheless, sometimes you just have to be there at the right place at the right time, and that is where CA was this season. JG won’t care about this match. There’s only 1 match left they season that they do care about. And that is in week 26

SAEFL SEASON 11 WEEK 24

Excelsior Warren and Lisbon United are 2 teams near the relegation line. Last week, we already saw that EW was the first team to officially relegate from div 1. LU is on 9th position, which is on the good side of the line, but since everything is very close in that area, they do need to win this one. That is why Nuno played a boost. But Simon also had a boost, and didn’t want to give anything away. However, it wasn’t the boost that Simon played that forced a decision in this match. It was the red card for DM DeGrote. He had to leave the field in already the 19th minute, and that cost LU more than 10 EMP. Now the difference was in EW’s favour. It was 8 EMP, but since LU had the better GK, the win was narrow: 4-3. Finally, another win for EW, but it’s too bad for Simon that this happens just when it doesn’t matter anymore. Well, to him I mean. To Nuno, of course it DOES matter. He will be very disappointed in DeGrote: if he would have kept his nerves, LU would have won the match. However, since the differences are- like I said- small, nothing’s decided yet. AP are safe, and EW are already relegated. That makes that LU, OC and NW fight to stay in div 1. Two of them will go down and 1 will be saved. With only 1 match to go, NW has the best perspective. Their win this week, makes that they have 23 points now. LU was on 21 points last week, and stays there. OC wins 1 points, and with that they also have 21 points. (and for the record: LU’s goal difference is a lot better!) So, if NW win their match next week, it doesn’t matter what LU and OC. Besides, LU and OC need to win their own match, if they want to stay in, and hope for NW to lose. The fight against relegation will remain excting until the very end, and we will see what it will be next week!
