Catbel Athletic

Let me take you back in time.
Almost 3 seasons ago, season 9 was about to start.
It was a little less than 2 years that I had taken over the management of Catbel Athletic. (which in fact was in week 8 in season 7).

Catbel Athletic was a big name in SAEFL, a mighty champion from the past.
But unfortunately, the term “past” was more appropriate for the team that I inherited, than the word “champion”.  It’s not unusual that a manager who all of a sudden can’t find the time to take care of a team, still holds on to a team, hoping that it will work out fine at a later stage.

But sadly, in most occasions that later stage doesn’t come along, and the team gets neglected.
That was exactly what happened to CA, and when I took over, I had some serious rebuilding to do. I was happy to have so many managers trying to help me out –I can remember lively email-discurssions with Mike and Nathan, Mark even coming over to my home to help me out with all these DM/ZD/OFF/CF/CB/GC thingies, and even Bart giving good advice. (Well, actually: he told me to do something, I did the opposite, and that usually worked!.

Everyone seemed very enthousiastic about this game, and that worked contageous.
It didn’t take long for me to get just as enthousiastic, and that was exactly what I needed to find out how the basics of this game worked. You know, the tactics and styles and players and stuff.

Knowing that, I figured out that it would be a very tough job to keep CA in div 1.
Sure, I needed to rebuild, and serious, but not at all expense, because I wanted to play in div 1 very much. That was where the people I knew played, and of course it’s the most fun to play against them. For 2 years in a row, CA was a team destined to relegate. In fact, when I took over, CA had 0 points out of 5 league matches played.

However, somehow, we miraculously escaped from relegation in the very last week of the season, after being in the relegation zone the entire season.

But then season 9 is there.
After almost 2 seasons of rebuilding, trading, buying youth players from the transferlist, and ordering youth at the beginning of the season, CA has turned from an ugly duckling team into a team that you can be proud of.  A team that looks capable of going for something, and still contain a nice future as well.

In my case, I chose to go for the cup. Of course, I knew there were better teams competing in the cup, and that our chances on actually winning the cup weren’t too big, but at least I wanted to see how far CA could get.

Unfortunately, CA met a lot of bad luck that season. Matches were lost that should have been won, red cards in important matches, and so on.

Still, we weren’t worried, as the CA squad had so much quality, relegation would be no option, we would eventually manage to stay in anyway.

Until the semi finals of the cup were to be played.
After another series of unfortunate losses, CA was still in deep trouble in the league, and with only a couple of matches left to play, we couldn’t afford to give away any league match.

That is when the painful decision had to be made to give up on the cup, and go for  another escape.
TH were very lucky with the walkover in the semi-final. They easily beat CA twice (a 77.5 NSL team  And a 80.25 NSL team, and that made that they were fit enough for the final to eventually win it. Who knows what might have happened if CA would have been safe in the league, and could have gone all the way in those semi-finals….

Anyway, our aim was at the league now.
But it appeared to be too late.
In spite of  our efforts, we just missed out on reaching position nr. 9.
It was frustrating in a way. After being able to escape relegation with a rather bad team, I finally went down with a pretty good team.

Anyway, there was no time to be sad about it.
I had to look at the positive things there were about this relegation.

There was at least 1: Bart had always been shouting how he had won everything there is to win in SAEFL: div 2, the cup, div 1, and eventually the world cup too.

(It is obvious that he was shouting this before div 3 was created).
Now I knew I had the opportunity to achieve the same: the only way to win the same things as Bart (and shut him up) meant that I also had to win div 2. For that, a relegation was needed, and although you don’t plan on it, when it occurs you have to take that chance.

The season in div 2 was very difficult. The average quality of the teams is, with all respect,  not as good as in div 1. But that won’t be a surprise, they aren’t 2 different divisions for no reason. But the div 2 teams, or at least their manager, turned out to be just as tough to play against. In div 1, the managers are all very predictible. You can analyse what they will play against you, and you are right in 90% of the cases, even when it comes to playing boosts and grudges.

Div 2 is totally different, and that is a lot of fun.
Anyway, it was a tough season, like I said, but we eventually made it: CA won the div 2 championship.

That season, season 10, turned out to be very important step in CA’s rebuilding process.
We were able to let talents grow, and could go for prizes (wining that title) at the same time.
When that succeeded, CA had a very promising roster.
There were a lot of young and promising players in our squad, and on top of that, the title and the promotion had earned us a lot of cash.

Pretty good conditions to try to make season 11 the best season in this managers history.
With already some good players in our team, and some nice young talents too, I thought it might be possible to go and build a strong top 11, a team to win me the cup.

Teams like TH and AA were too good, I could never win more points than them in the league, but in  the cup I would have a chance.

So, I started to trade and build towards good cup team. I needed to have 11 really good players, preferrably freaks.
The first one I obtained was AS Damaseb. I could get him from TB, because Jeroen wanted to rebuild.
That transfer got the trades snowballing. CA could add world class players like Thor, Garanhao and Bremmner to the squad. Those transfers made not only that CA turned into a team that could go and win prizes, but  it also weakened TB, TH and AA for at least this season.

And since they were –in my eyes- the biggest title contenders, I realized that there were other opportunities all of a sudden: the title!

Of course, it was impossible to win the double. Both because my own team was not strong enough to fight both battles, and also because other teams were pretty strong as well.

(In fact, I am afraid that winning the double will be impossible for any team in the next couple of years, because there are more “Very good teams” than there were a couple of years ago, and the differences between them aren’t that big.

So if you want to win the title, you can’t afford to lose SP in the cup, or the other way around).

Anyway, choosing between going for the cup or the title wasn’t a tough decision of course: We would go for the championship!

It has been a tough, tough season. The start was rather good for CA, but AA, in spite of all that rebuilding, just didn’t lose any points either.

After midseason aging, AA only got stronger. And not just AA, TB was another team that got a lot stronger after midseason aging, and who just didn’t seem to lose points anymore, when AA and CA did lose some points once in a while (I still have nightmares when I think about those matches against LU, Nuno!!).

The last weeks have been nerve-wrecking, but eventually I guess it was the strong squad that CA had, that made the difference. With all respect to AA and TB, and without any false modesty (which by the way is the most severe way of arrogance), I think I can say that CA really had the strongest and best team this season. One look at the stats that Terry provides us every week (Thanks for that Terry, I hope you’ll keep up the good work next season too) shows that CA has the best stats. In fact, when you look at those stats, you’d be surprised that it took so long before the race for the title had been decided.

When you keep that in mind, you will realize what a great performance Nathan and Jeroen –just to name the 2 most “dangerous” teams for CA- have put on the pitch.

Next year, CA won’t be this strong for sure, and since TB and AA have only been getting better, I think we will have to watch out for them next year.

Thanks to everyone who has made this season so fantastic, once again!a

Excelsior Warren

From the Excelsior Herald...

What a season. Relegation! But what are the thoughts of the manager after all that...

A hard season. Two bouts of bad ageing were enough to kill off what had seemed to be a promising team. Ageing is random and it is hard to combat. OK Excelsior hardly entered the transfer market, but I think there are too few players available in the drafts each week; that is why the players that are available go for silly money. Again we did little trading, but most mamangers want to trrade for quality, not take your dross in exchange for their quality. Few people want money for good players as most teams have all the moeny they need. Difficult to see a way back. Now SAEFL has three divisions I believe the weekly draft has to be expanded, both to bring the prices down to reasonable levels and to give more teams a chance of signing someone half decent.

I would also favour making players stats available to their manager. The league is currently divided between those with the know how, time and patience to work out all the stats and those who haven't. I agree that I should have to put in the effort to scout the stats of other manager's players, but I should know the abilties and temperaments of my own.

IQ is in the cup final!  I guess that's a high point for the season.  We had a lot of outstanding performances in the semifinal.  2 players even shooting 100% from the field!  I think it was just as well that he didn't have a grudge available.  I don't think I could have overcome  a grudge.

Another squeaker in the league game.  Even Napoleon said he'd rather have a marshall who was lucky than good.  The boost isn't a big mystery.  It was play it then or waste it against CA in this week's game.  CA is just too good this season.  Thank goodness for penalties!  This is the second time in 2 weeks that Hamm has converted a PK for us.

Season recap.

Due to a series of unfortunate events we stubled into division 1 for this season.  It showed.  In the first half of the season we didn't do well, basically staying in the relegation zone.  We did well in the early rounds of the cup but that's because we drew opponents who didn't care about the cup.  In that case it's easy to make it to at least the quarterfinals.  So realisitcally we were in division 1 with a good caliber 2nd division team.

Then came the mid-season aging.  I got my first freak player since taking over IQ; M.Hamm.  Not only that but the total NSL for the team jumped by at least 7 points.  So we were a completely different team.  Not only could we field a 100 NSL team but we actually had some depth!  For once, different tactics/styles were an option.  I even managed a couple of wins with defensive arrangements something that had not worked previously.  I could use different arrangements of ONE to counter CP as well as WH or even BC.  Tactics!  Who would have thought?  So we managed to not relegate.  Since we play top of the table CA in a meaningless game we'll probably drop out of the playoff zone for the interEFL cup but that's fine.  We have the cup final waiting for us!

Curiously, IQ really benefited from home field advantage.  I think we had as many home wins as away defeats.  Considering the number of one goal games we had that advantage was crucial.  I'm awaiting the end of season aging with trepidation.  I'm not sure we'll be as strong of a team.  A lot will depend upon which mid age players have peaked.

My goal for the season was limited.  Don't relegate.  With the stronger second half team that was pretty much a foregone conclusion.  That meant I could focus more on the cup.  I was certain of making to the semis.  I didn't know if we could make it to the final.  But we did.  So we'll have to see what happens.  If I continue to be lucky then we might even win it!

Lisbon United

Well, this was a poor season from LU, we made some mistakes that cost us the points we now need to stay

in DIv 1, but the team is aging fast and we need new blood so it`s better to drop to the 2nd league

and stay there 2 or 3 seasons and build up again. Congratulations to the winners. Thank you all.

High Points:

1) A few wins

2) the making it to the second round of the cup

Low Points:

1) Most weeks, as OC will likely get relagated.

2) Mid-season aging

3) Havng a manager that was too busy to be affective, thus leading to relagation

The Boelewieten

Boelewieten In Sight week 25

We faced some real NC power that overwhelmed TB. Despite good emping there was nothing to do about it. The run for second or first place in the league cost the players to much Stanimapoints, and with a small selection of 27 players that’s starting to hurt. The two young players, CF B. Artswish and CM H. Goodbey performed at an average level, Goodbey showed that he has potential to lead the squad in the future, a positive element of the NC-TB game. AA spilled also points and with 1 week to go it was possible to catch them, TB going to the second place and a highlight of the Boowies in recent years. That brings us to a review of season 11, and a preview to season 12.

The Boelewieten started this season with huge trading. Sometimes I wondered myself if there wasn’t a 360 degrees kind of trading that took place. Trade trade trade to get the player y want, or not, because the manager did not check aging of the red/yellow cards a player received last season, and therefore that player was not interesting enough for the goal I obtained.  I looked how some managers trade in a different league, how they (or must I say he) trades away top players to get a top and high emping team, resulting in a small but also very effective selection of players. But the result of TB was I side too much oriented on ZD which is a tactic to secure a draw and can give some problems when y really need a win. It generates not that many shots on the opponents Goalkeeper and with the funny commishmachine the production of needed goals sometimes stuck, or y get an over exited nsl 8 GK who plays the game of its life, in short, we lost too many points by that.

Early season we made not a real decision for what our real aim was, the cup or the league. What played a big role was the TB struggle in the relegation zone last year. I did not believe we could be competitive in both, and had fear for losing to many points when using grudges and boost in the cup, an inevitable relegation to the second division. So we survived the qualifying round using even longball (what got me thinking) to win games, but against FI, again FI, we let the chance of cup glory go.

TB’s position after the first few matches on the table remembered me of the relegation battle last year; the emping we achieved gave also hope. Mid table just before midseason aging, and aging itself was like a bad fools day joke, could not believe my eyes. Two freaks rolled out, and all youngsters, well, I exclude here the striker and GK section, aged very well. With three grudges in the pocket I believed we had a good chance as an outsider to make a difference in the battle. The benefit of an outsider is that y can avoid grudges or boost from other teams. With the feeling of having a chance and having thee incentives to play we approached the top of the league aggressive, playing the top three, CA, AA and JG in a away game with a grudge and winning all three games. So, readers, we killed the top three ;-).

I killed also some friendships this season, but that scenario is common for the manager, a grudge can’t ruin what a pitcher of beer can repair! We are not talking about woman and love affairs here! The grudge-seed I planted this season can have some effect next season, its there frustration among managers that must be sublimated on the Boowies? Gladly I know that all respected managers will not be guided by their emotions, so a sunny season 12 for TB!

The Jazz Greats

First i want to congratulate all winners so far! Ivo, Martijn, Claudio, well done! I think for all those three managers it's there first league title in SAEFL (or any EFL?) and this bodes ill for the EFL elite as it existed until now :) Which is a good thing of course!

For me it's hard to say if this season has gone well or not. Basically this whole season was one big prelude to week 26: The Cup Final!

If i win the season is great, if i don't well, i won't say the season is a waste but i think i could have ended top three in the league with this team if i had less cup efforts so...

The cupmatch itself is going to be a tough one. Terry has become a excellent manager in a very short time and with IQ he has a team that can perform very well. That's problem one.

Problem two is that i checked out some earlier matches and it seems that Terry has discovered the OFF tactic. That means i can't play my usual WP because OFF will kill it as Ivo kindly has shown me. So i can't play WP,..that really really sucks!

I'll have to choose between an antitactic or play just plain defensive. But then a full out ONE or WH tactic will probably beat me by a smalll margin. Well, these are the cup dilemma's  :(

Problem three is that i have a hangover but that's not really relevant.

As for the next season. I will need to rebuild again so all my great WP players are for trade for AS's and CM's! Contact me after the aging...

Good luck!

Tottenford Heats

Well it's the last week of the season and TH didn't win anything unfortunately. But if you look at all the trades I made in the first few weeks You can't call that a surprise. I basically traded all players who won the title for me last season to CA and they did the trick for him as well :). I got some very promising talents in return and I hope they will be good enough after the coming aging. With a few strategic trades in the beginning of next season we might be a sub top team again.

We will also start the new season with a new Logo. With special thanks to Claudio from the defrosted tunafish ! thanks claudio !!

now lets wait and see if I can climb 1 or 2 spots in the league table. To do that I will have to beat EW and at least 1 of the 3 teams direct above me should loose.

oh and peter, as always thanks for running the games every week again. you changed a lot this season, a new MR layout for instance a new division and probably also stuff we don't directly see.

DIVISION 2

Adirondak Renegades

Adirondak press (AP): Congratulations on making the playoffs!

Manager Fulmer (MF): Thanks. Our goal for the season was just to avoid relegation while the side developed. Making the playoffs was a nice bonus. Especially since I think we had no points the first 7 weeks of the season.

AP: AR had a nice decisive victory to lock up the playoff spot.

MF: Yes, although it was against an AS side that was looking at several young players. But still, the win allows me to rest my top guys for the playoffs and check out some young players. It was good to see some strong performances in the match from young players. 22yo S. Mann had a hat trick in her second match of the season. This is after scoring 6 times in her first match last week. And 21 yo Evans, who is the second ranked GK in Div 2, saved 7 of 12 shots so he should hang onto that ranking.

AP: Any thoughts on the playoffs?

MF: Not yet. We have been focusing on making them first. Maybe next week :)

African Selection

Bad Luck this season sees the Selects continue their free fall from the first division. The year started with a thought to move away from the attacking soccer that got the Selects up and kept them in the first division for a number of seasons. It was just too hard to keep the forwards - in drafting, in purchasing (where is this $$$ coming from?????)  and in trades. I found it really hard to make trades (probably in part due to my non-SAEFL work load).

Congrats to the winners ! Well done. I take some pride in the fact that we actually scored on GU (no mean feat by any stretch of the imagination!).

I hope you all have a wonderful off season. Hopefully your aging goes well for you.

GU would like to thank Peter for keeping the league going as long as he has (I don't know how he does it).

High points for GU this season.

* Has been only allowing 7 goals all year and should be good enough to beat the old record of 9!

* Finishing stronger 2nd half of season weather we do make 2nd spot or not im happy.

* 2 new DS signings with reasonable stats

* Not as many red or yellow cards as last season

* Playing in Div 2 for the first time in our 10 year career.

Low points for GU this season

* Given away 3 penalty's in a Match

* DS S. Nevland (90 games 6 bookings) and CB W. Campbell (113 games 25 bookings) retiring.

* Going out early in cup

Well last week we lost to DL, which was not that big of surprise because they are the champions.  A win would have been nice but we won't complain that much.

We will be in the playoffs and second place was a long shot for us anyway.

This week we play AS, who are going to relegate.  This would lead one to believe that we should beat them.  When we played them in the beginning of the season, it was a 0-0 draw.  Of course, we want the win this week but if we tie again or even if we lose, we will still be in the playoffs.  So this game is almost useless for us except that something crazy might happen and we do end up in second place if we win and also that we would like a higher spot for the playoffs.

As for the season, it was not the best one.  This is only my third season in SAEFL.  The first, we did not even make the playoffs but we were close.  The second season was the exciting one for PN.  It started out simply okay but somewhere in the middle we took off and sat in second place for the majority of the season.  The last game of the season, we were playing a team who was not that close to us in the standings but they played a grudge against us anyway and won so we lost second place right at the very end.  Then all our players had such bad stamina, we couldn't risk it and lost in the playoffs.  This got me my nickname 'Bad Luck' Kelly :).

As it turned out, we probably were not good enough for Div 1 this season anywaybecause our aging did not turn out very well.  The beginning of this season we lost a lot, tied every now and then and rarely won.  We were not even in the playoff zone at mid-season aging.  That aging was not bad for us and we started winning games which is how we are in fourth place right now.  We'll probably end in fourth, maybe third, and then we will go into the playoffs.  We might or might not win in the playoffs but we have a better team so next year should be a better season for us.

"We are going to do everything in our power to upset TJ in the final regular week of the season. Our friends at ES sure could use our help as they battle with a glimmer of hope for the final playoff spot.

ES has a tough order ahead of them playing GU in their final regular match of the season.  But when we beat TJ and if ES can get by GU then ES could get the final playoff spot over TJ. It is like I said previously," Since we found out that SH was going to be relegated, it was decided by our coaching staff that we wanted to make life miserable for those playing us. Last week, SH managed to do that versus DS. Now if we can do this against TJ. "

SH Manager Lear went onto say,"In this match against TJ, we are taking a no holds barred approach. We will be coming at TJ in wave after wave. They will know that we are coming after them. Our lads are definitely looking forward to this match. SH versus TJ should be a cracker of a match with plenty of goals being scored.!"

SH is pleased to announce their player awards for the season. Here they are:

Most Valuable Player - DF A. Hirsi-Ali

Offensive Player of the Season - (a tie) - CF R. Garcia      CF   P. Morales

Defensive Player of the Season - FB A. Hirsi-Ali Rookie of the Season - GK S. Tained Most Sportsmanlike Player - DM J. Bruce Humanitarian Award - S J. Moranes

AC/DC Special Award -  CF   A. Young

Combining Athletic with Education Award - DS G. Norrie

Since this is the final week of the regular SAEFL season, SH would like to thank League Commish Peter Babcock for usual outstanding job in keeping the SAEFL running on all cylinders. Despite our travel to D-3 for next season, we are looking forward to next season with great anticipation because of the maturing of our Kiddie's Corp. We took our lumps and bumps this season but because SH went on a youth movement, we anticipated this and are prepared for one season in D-3.

I truly like SH's chances for a successful trip back to D-2 after next season. Good luck to all playoff

End of season

Regular season ends this week, and then its only the playoffs left for us at AV.

This was the first season with a third division and also the comeback for me in SAEFL. I started off good with a few trades and some wins, but never really had a chance at the title. But a playoff spot is good news. In the latest games we have rested our roster to get the best 11 to play in the playoffs. Hopefully we can get a promotion but it will be hard.

Blue Storm FC

It's the final game of the season and that means that Wayne United and Fanatics United get to go head to head this week. Even though the Coaches and managers of these two teams are close friends they have not spoekn over the game. This will be a close game to watch.

See you in the stands

Defrosted TunaFish

Well with my 2 top CF players out of action.. We cant play WP for our last game of the season, and I know Rhaj will

be upset esp considering that he could have of won the Broze boot award for most goals this season… oh well, with only 1 goal

seperating us from Hayes im pretty sure he cant win it now! but... with any luck :p and some bad luck from hayes we can manage to grab it :)

otherwise, been an awesome season for DT - with 352 goals to date and one game left :) its been a goals fiesta for us !

Congratz to FU for being promoted aswell, was a close season against him and his team, will be very interesting how we play in Div2

against each other - if we still have the "grudge" or we save them for our div2 opponents :)

as for the play offs… that’s going to be great fun to watch and good luck to everyone who makes it!

with next season there will be a world cup.. DEF looking forward to that - should be great games there - as for the ageing aswell… hmmm,

not sure what to expect from that - next season I dotn think DT has a very good chance to win the season or come anywhere close to the playoffs -

but we will def try do out best and not throw our promotion away! more of a rebuilding season for DT i think...

congratz to the Div1 and Div2 winnin teams - div 1 was very exciting to watch, coming down to the last few games of the season…. :)

as for this week - we gonna try play an OFF - have played WP everygame of this season… so we'll try a change and see if DT can pull off a win with

something new, esp going against a WP team FE was the first game we played this season and we drew 15-15 :) so a great game will be expected from

the 2 of us! good luck FE - they definitly qualified for the play offs - so lets hope they dont play their best team :P

Also desigin a Trophy for each Division… if anyone has a design they wanna put forward, gimme a shout and ill create it for saefl

got div1's trophy so far - lemme know what ya all think esp CA :)

Last game of the season and we are sitting in the red. BLEH!! So much for wanting to finish mid-table. Anyhow lessons have been learnt the hard way and we hope to have a better season next year.

Second is good, for a moment there I thought I was going to draw, in the last game,

but we came through in the end. We should have beating FA by more, we had a better

team. My friend always tells me that the score board has no comments, except in

SAEFL.

I am up now against my friend in the next game, so in true SAEFL tradition there

will be grudge cards, I didn't have one though, here is hoping BS don't have any

either.

Looking into the next season, cheers for now...

Morale is high in team. Great team spirit going. Each team member is there for the other. In this light the coach has decided to give some youngsters an oppertunity how still balanced the team with more experienced players to assist with confidence and still create stability.
