DIVISION 1 GAMES

When these two archrivals meet it’s always a beautifull clash! But this time AA had nothing to win or lose. On the other hand, NW had to win to make sure they stayed in div1. So for Mike the stakes were high. He played a very very solid ZD to make sure he didn’t lose but in the end he was a bit lucky AA had a sentoff (i’m not counting Essien..). Without it this game would be a draw. Now it was a NW victory. NW stay where they belong, in the SAEFL top flight. And they will be better next seaon. And AA, they did astonishingly well this season. There 2nd place is nothing more then a miracle, fueled of course by a good manager and a bit of luck. And they will become better also. And what’s better then 2nd spot? Yep!!

Matches between Alcohol Anonymous and NoShaKi WC’98 are always special. Nathan and Mike have been fighting against each other for titles and cups so often, that this confrontation is a classic. In this particular match, there was something at stake. Not for AA, because after their defeat last week, they knew that they would end the season as the number 2. However, for NW this was still an important match. NW needed a win to stay in div 1. Even if they would draw or loose, they would still have a chance to survive in the top flight, but in that case they would not have things in their own hands. Nathan showed no mercy though. He saved a boost for this match, knowing that he might need it if he would be still in the race for the title, as matches against NW are tough. Well, not for everyone this season, maybe, but for AA they are always tough. That’s just the way it works. Even though AA eventually got out of the race for the title, Nathan still played the boost. You can’t save ‘em for the next season, so why be a bad sport and help NW while he went all the way against LU and OC. But NW also played a pretty, no, a very good team, and that made that we saw a match between 2 teams that were almost equal. The biggest difference between them, was that the AA players could not hide their frustration about missing the title, and two of them had to leave the field with a red card. What AA missed on EMP, is 6.22 plus 0.32=6.54. That means that the difference between AA and NW would have been less than 1 EMP. Now however, it was big enough for a smother shot. But unlucky, FB Enela missed that. Unlucky? Not really actually, as NW were also awarded a penalty, and this time, Makeni was a little bit more careful, and kicked it in. That was enough for the victory, for the 3 points, and with that for another season in div 1. It also means that with this result, the results of LU and OC don’t matter anymore, as they will have to leave div 1 for at least a season . Too bad guys!

SAEFL SEASON 11 WEEK 25

JG is in the cupfinal and in this match it showed. Bart played most of his reserve players and tried a tactic that’s just plain, ehh, let’s say unusual for him. FI has had a good season in which they just lost in the semi finals of the cup. From JG. So in the end it’s justice they beat JG in there last match of the season and pass JG on the table. Good season Marco! Bart will focus on the one match that can break or make his season.

FC Inferno against Jazz Greats is a replay of this seasons semi-final of the cup. In the cup, it was JG who turned out to be the best team. In the league, Marco can get his revenge. FI is only 2 points behind JG, and knowing that this is the last game of the season, they can catch JG and climb to the 4th position. And if you are with the last four teams in both the cup and in div 1, you are a fantastic team, no doubt about that. It will not be a surprise that Marco indeed managed to beat JG. This is the last match before the cup final, so of course, Bart saved his best 11 players. Since FI is a strong team, of course they beat the JG B- squad without any problems: 12-5. FI climb the table, towards the 4th position. They might lose that position to IQ, but the FI goal difference is already better (in case IQ draws), and IQ has to play against CA, so FI has the best chances on that 4th position. JG drops to 5th position, and if IQ might win against CA, they might even drop to 6th. But of course Bart won’t care, as for JG, only the cup is important!

SAEFL SEASON 11 WEEK 25

TH is the team that is destined to fight with AA for the title next season (and CA) of course. This season they focused on the cup with as result a semi final. This means there league position (7th) isn’t really great. But look at there emp in this match. Allmost 140!! There league position doesn’t say a thing. TH is better, TH is good. EW had nothing to fight for as they were allready relegated but even so, they wouldn’t stand a chance. The GK’s did strange things but the victory was deserved. Simon will try to win his way back in div1 as soon as possible. I guess he will succeed :)

Tottenford Heats is another team that just missed the cup final. Since – because of rebuilding- they did not even mingle in the fight for the top positions in the league, their season is over as well. Just as it is for Excelsior Warren, who already knew that they had to head back to div 2. Nonetheless, both Mark and Simon played to their best ability. And even if you skip the boost that Mark still had, you see that TH has a lot of potential. With all those young players, - I know, this has already been said before- I expect TH to be one of the teams to watch next season. It will be no surprise that EW is not a team good enough to fight for the div 1 title next year, they aren’t in the relegation zone for nothing. Still, I think that EW IS good enough to fight for the div 2 title next year. It’s a different ballgame, I know, but the good thing for Simon (you have to think positive) is that he will probably be playing in the top of the league again, and that is always fun.

SAEFL SEASON 11 WEEK 25

Both teams needed a win to grab that last straw and avoid relegation (of course NW won so it wouldn’t have mattered but still..). OC attacked with a CP team and LU countered with a clever ZD. LU had the better team and were unlucky to see none of there three shots hit the net. But it wouldn’t have mattered anyway. It’s strange to see Nuno relegate, really really weird. Look at that emp!! Ah well, he’s a master tactician and a master builder so he’s going to be back. With an Arsenic Vengeance no doubt :)

We already know that NW won their game, so we also know that this match between Lisbon United and Oaklake City doesn’t matter anymore. At least not for Nuno and Keith’s fight against relegation. It could have been different if AA would have beaten NW. In that case, this match would have been one of the most important and exciting matches this week. But that was not the case. In fact, even if it would have mattered, it would have turned out that all efforts from LU and OC would have been in vain, as neither team managed to win this one. Looking closer, you can see that Nuno in fact was unlucky. LU was much better than OC, they performed even above 140 EMP. Sure, there was a boost involved, but still, reaching 140 makes you wonder how a team like LU relegates. But LU wasn’t very lucky this season. As showed this match. LU was more than 16 EMP better (!). Since they play defensive (ZD) it rendered them only 3 chances. You’d think that would be enough to score at least once, but it wasn’t. Both Adu (twice) and Gomes failed, and that meant a 0-0 stalemate between two teams that will probably be fighting eachother for at least a playoff position next season.

SAEFL SEASON 11 WEEK 25

TB made a last desperate attempt to go for the title but after that failed they focused on next season. AP had a decent mid-table season. But both teams have potential. Great nsl in this match and considering the tactics played good emp. TB was better but AP was very very lucky. It was a match with no consequences though. Both teams keep there position. Jeroen will also know after this match he himself isn’t a good captain for his team :)

The Boelewieten against Apocalypse was a bizarre match. For their rank in the league, this match didn’t matter that much, as both Jeroen and Martin didn’t have anything exciting to play for. Still, they gave it their best. Martin even still had a boost, and played a 101.50 NSL WP team. But we all know that Jeroen has a pretty strong team as well, and he let TB play OFF (course). With that, TB was the stronger team. They were almost 10 EMP better. However, where Jeroens GK (NSL 10) did not save many chance, his opponent, GK Coutinho, played a great match. But then there was an unfortunate moment for AP. Coutinho got injured in the 30th minute, and had to leave the field and be replaced by GK Wijnen, only NSL 9. The AP luck was about to change, and it was expected that the TB siege would lead to a victory. A small one, but that is 3 points too of course. But it turned out different. GK Wijnen played a great match as well, and left TB empty handed, as the AP players had a much better scoring percentage. So, Jeroen is frustrated not by one, but by two AP goalies! Oh well, it’s fun to see a result like this, but it doesn’t really matter. By the way, after beating AA last week, this is another top 3 team beaten by AP in 2 weeks time!

SAEFL SEASON 11 WEEK 25

How would the champ end his season? Since he was playing cupfinalist IQ, Ivo was probably expecting an easy win. But things didn’t go as he expected at all! IQ played a great team and didn’t seem care about the final at all! Terry decided in stead he wanted a better league table position and wanted to end the league in style. And he did. He had a bit of luck with the shots and with the sendoff of Weasley but nevermind that. He gambled and won. He passed JG (again JG, duh!) on the table and finishes 4th. Great great job and maybe there is more to come.. Ivo had a great season as well, this loss doesn’t change a thing. Let’s see how things go next year!

Catbel Athletic and InterQuartile Rangers are 2 teams that played in division 2 last year. They promoted to div 1, and generally, you’d expect these new teams to have a tough season. But look what Terry and Ivo did this year: CA won the div 1 title, and IQ reached the cup final. And mind you: reaching that final did not go at expense of the results in the league. IQ is in the top half of division 1!! This match didn’t matter anymore. CA already won the championship last week, and IQ has to play the cup final next week, that is what matters. In this weeks game however, you’d expect IQ to save themselves for the cup, but apparantly they didn’t. IQ played a strong team. CA of course played a strong team as well. They have been playing strong week in week out, not just in NSL but also in EMP. This week was no different. Once again, more than 100 NSL on the pitch, and even though FB Weasley was shown a red card after half an hour (which cost 9.09 EMP), CA still was the better team, almost 4 EMP more than IQ. But 4 EMP is not very much of course. And IQ had a NSL 10 GK, against NSL 9.75 for CA. That is a very small difference of course, and in fact, it did not make much of a difference: CA was awarded 32 chances, and scored 12, while IQ was awarded 30 chances and scored 12. That could have been a nice result. But on top of that, IQ got 2 penalties, and being a team with good attackers, they did not hesitated and scored both of them, leading to a 14-12 victory. IQ show to be in good shape for the final, they just have to hope that they did not use up all their luck. The loss for CA meant that the entire top 3 lost their match. It made no difference for the result though, but it might show how difficult it is to be in the race for the title, and have to perform every other week. You just can’t always keep up that good form.
