DIVISION 2 PLAY OFFS

The first semi-final of the playoffs in div 2, between Enland U21 and The Jazz, was decided by 2 things. The first was the injury for EU forward Stage. Already after 20 minutes he had to leave the pitch, and that meant that EU had to play with a replacement with 3.5 NSL less for more than ¾ of the game. That sure must have caused the difference in EMP at the end, although even now, the difference wasn’t that big. Bad luck for Mike and his EU. The second thing however, had nothing to do with bad luck. It was the fact that TJ had a NSL 10 GK, against a 9.25 for EU. And looking at this match, I think that even if CF Stage would not have been forced to leave the field, this would still have turned out to be the most decisive. Out of 14 shots, GK Mouse saved 10(!), which was a much better performance than what GK Fechugol did, who saved 9 out of 20. That made that Stewart and TJ will be thrilled to make it to the playoffs final. Too bad for Mike and EU, but when you look at how well EU performed this season, I’m sure their time will come, and come soon.

SAEFL SEASON 11 WEEK 26

Point of Napier AFC were very unlucky last season. In the last match of the league, they gave away the nr 2 position and direct promotion, and in the playoffs, they were beaten by IQ. This season, it is Don, and Adirondak Renegades who are unlucky. In the most important match of the season, Don sadly see not one but two players leave the field early because of red cards. Sure, especially the second card was rather late in the match, but still the 2 cards together meant a loss of 3.81 EMP, and that probably would have been enough for a victory. The 9 AR players fought brave, and managed to keep it 5-5, which was a correct result considering everything, as (including the red cards) PN and AR turned out to be equally strong. So, the match had to be decided by penalties…. Of course, this is always the worst way to lose a game. I don’t know if it has anything to do with the fact the PN team is more attacking than the AR team, and that attackers are generally better with penalties, but in this case PN indeed was the luckiest team. Kelly finally makes it to the playoffs final, and is only one step away from playing against Terry again (which will be tough for PN). Don will be sad, as this was not his lucky day. On the other hand, I don’t think that AR really counted on promotion already this season. Sure, when you come this close you go for it, and that’s what they did. But now it didn’t happen, I guess AR will keep growing, be even better next season, and that might be enough for a promotion then.

DIVISION 2 PLAY OFF FINAL

SAEFL SEASON 11 WEEK 26

The division 2 playoffs final was between Point of Napier and The Jazz, the numbers 4 and 6 on the league table, and with that maybe a somewhat unexpected final. Of course, Kelly played the usual WP, and I don’t think –with all respect- that PN has any other choice. Stewart did not counter that with OFF, because since the nr. 1 tactics for TJ is CP, he thought that would be suitable as well. And it turned out that Stewart was right. TJ and PN were almost equally strong: PN created 32 chances, against 31 for TJ, that says it all. However, the difference was not in the performance on the pitch, but the performance in the goal. TJ played with a NSL 10 GK, and PN not. That was decisive, and TJ scored 16 times, against only 11 for PN. Too bad for Kelly, as she has to wait another season to play against Terry. But I trust that this is, amongst other things of course, a good motivation for another great performance next season. Just look at PN increasing: last year they made it to the playoffs semi-finals, this year they made it to the finals, so we all know what the next logical step would be. For Stewart, the next step is something completely different, and it’s a huge step, as TJ makes it to the first division! Congratulations Stewart, well done! Like already mentioned: can you call it a surprise that TJ wins the playoffs? I think not. TJ might not have had a lot of good players, so rotation could be something to build up for the future, but at least TJ has a strong top 11, and that is what can win you matches when it really comes down to it. And of course, the matches in the playoffs were those kind of matches. Good luck in div 1 Stewart!
