CUP GROUP GAMES GAME 1

Oaklake City, the new div 1 team, against Smoking Guns, a whole new team, was an exciting match. Up front you would say that OC would be considered the favorite, but in this match the difference wasn’t very big. Keith put 87.25 NSL on the pitch, against 86.25 for Iman, so that was only 1 NSL difference. Keith countered Imans solid ONE with a solid CP, and the difference between OC and SG in EMP wasn’t big either, only a 3.19 difference in OC’s favour. Still, that difference was enough for 3 extra shots: 17 for OC against 14 for SG. Both teams played with a NSL 9 GK, and in this match, they both performed equally good, and saved 9 chances. Which led to a 3 goal difference victory for OC. Keith has taken a nice step towards the next cup round, while Iman has 2 matches left to settle things.

The Jazz has had a great year in season 9, when they reached to the 3rd spot in div 2. Last year, they had to rebuild their team here and there, and now it looks like Stewart has managed to build another nice team. Look at them: he did not even play AS Kirk to make TJ look very good, so this promises something for the rest of the season. Wouters Vitesse Arnhem is a WP team in the first place, but either they wanted to check out a 2nd tactics, or rest their most important WP players, as we saw an ENF tactics. Even though only a second tactics, being played by a fresh div 3 team (so you can’t expect too much then), the ENF looked quite allright. However, it will be no surprise that TJ was the better team, and the 3-0 victory wasn’t very big, but it was very much deserved. Good start in the cup for Stewart, and Wouter will probably focus on the league this season.

Claudio must have thought that his Defrosted Tunafish would not stand a chance against Jazz Greats, as the team he sent to play JG was no more than 62 NSL altogether. I believe that is a record low in SAEFL, at least for the matches that I have witnessed so far. He may have had a point by the way. JG has a strong team, and if Bart would decide to go for it, JG would be a lot stronger. Bart played a 91.50 NSL team, which is almost a 30 NSL difference! That of course led to a difference in EMP that was even bigger: more than 41 EMP difference! Since both teams played WP, it will be no surprise that this led to lots and lots of chances: JG created no less than 57 chances, while DT still managed to create 21. But now comes the story about the GK’s. JG played with a 9.5 GK, and out of those he managed to save only 8 chances. DT played with a 8.5 GK, and that guy performed a whole lot better! He had the match of his life, saving chance after chance after chance. Out of 57 shots, he managed to save no less than 39. However, that still meant 18 goals for JG, which turned out to be enough for a 18-13 victory. I think we can call it a fair victory, in the end, right?

It wasn’t as low in NSL as Claudio did, but Travis didn’t pick much more for Trav Spoodle. With a 66.81 NSL team, he faced Newton Heath, making clear once and for all that his priorities are not in the cup this season. Robert on the other side played a solid 90.25 NSL WH team, and although the differnce between the 2 teams wasn’t as big as in the previous match, it was enough for a much bigger win. Of course, this has everything to do with the fact that both GK’s behaved like normal GK’s. NH take the lead in the group on goal difference, while TV will focus on the league I guess.

Nathan decided to rest most of his first team players, and still come up with a solid ZD team that was good enough for quite some EMP. Mind you, all div 1 managers; Alcohol Anonymous is back, and they are good in rotation! Berto did not give away this game, in fact he even made Blue Storm FC play with 3.25 NSL more. But AA had all the players in the right positions, and with his AS’s and CM’s benefiting from the opponent tactics bonus, AA was just too good for BS. They did not give away any chances, and BS would not have scored if it weren’t for a penalty. AA were awarded a penalty as well, so that was in balance. It was just that AA managed to create 4 field chances as well, and they only needed to score half of them to secure a 3-1 victory. Not big, but it’s 3 points, and with the new cup rules, it means a giant step towards the next round.

TEAM PENALIZED

It’s always nice to see 2 teams that are not holding back in cup games, and play with good teams. That is what true cupfighting football is all about, and the only bad thing about it, is that in a clash like this, usually 1 team has to lose. Dons Adirondak Renegades and Mikes NoShaKi WC’98 made a spectacle out of it, both playing with a team around 90 NSL, and maybe, just maybe, Mike would have had the best of it, if it weren’t for the fact that NW suffered from not 1 but 2 send offs! Against 9 players, AR turned out to be a lot better, and if it wasn’t for NW GK P. Cech, the score could have been much higher. Anyway, with AA in this cup group as well, it will be very hard for NW, last years cup finalist, to make it to the 2nd round. Don on the other hand, has taken the lead in the group (on goal difference), and a victory over BS might lead AR to the 2nd round……

The Lisbon United team that Nuno picked for this match, wasn’t much better than the Adelaide Kickers team that David picked. The difference in NSL was only 3.50, and that resulted in a EMP difference of 8.78. Sure, that meant that LU had the better football, which resulted in more chances: 24 against 17 for AK. But it’s not just about NSL and EMP. That can only influence the number of chances you create. And it is not just about creating chances, it is also about saving them. In that light, the difference between LU’s GK and AK’s GK was only 1 NSL, but ask any experienced manager: that is the most important difference in NSL there is! David just learned about that, and he learned it the easy way: in spite of the fact that LU actually was better, his GK Visthala was much better than his opponent, and that resulted in a 9-4 victory for AK. Sure, Nuno was unlucky to see MF Murphy leave the field with a red card, but since that happened only in the 87th minute, it had no influence on the result.

The clash between Englehart Storm and Druss Legends, is the clash between 2 teams that were in the div 2 playoffs last season, but didn’t make it to div 1. How will they perform this season? Well, it looks like both ES and DL still have strong teams, and I expect they will be going for the top half place, so we will probably see them at least in the playoffs again. In this match, they both did not hold back, played strong teams, attacking tactics, and created lots of chances. In fact they both created 26 chances, which states that they indeed were almost equally strong. So, once again the difference was made by the best GK, and (although Martijn will probably disagree with me) thank god this is season 11, and GK’s are behaving normal again! 26 chances for both teams, and the NSL 10 GK was better than the NSL 9 GK, so ES wins. Simple as that! Peter will be happy, as another win in one of the 2 remaining matches will probably bring him in the next cup round, while Martijn will have to decide if he still wants to go for it, or put all his efforts in the league.

The joke of the week is without any doubt on Mark. The man who won the cup for 2 seasons in a row, while he was kicked out in the semi-finals last season only because his first priority was in winning the title (in which he succeeded), played with a strong Tottenford Heats: No less than 97 NSL was put on the pitch, in order to take a huge step towards the next cup round. That 97 NSL led to no less than 137.28 EMP, which is good enough to win you matches in the quarter or semi final, let alone a group match against a new div 3 team. That new div 3 team was Otto’s Deo Volente. Otto will not have thought he would stand any chance against TH, and so he did not play a very low NSL team (no 60’s scores here), but the 78.75 was almost 20 less than TH. Of course, that resulted in a big diffrence in EMP as well. The bonus that his players won was nice in percentage, but when it comes down to it, it was just a little above 100 EMP. So no less than 37 EMP separated these 2 teams. Now that is what I call smashing! And that, of course, resulted in a lot more chances for TH, which will be no surprise at all: 48 chances for TH, against 19 for DV, so almost 30 chances more. Now, let’s look at both GK’s: TH has a NSL 9 GK, where DV played with a NSL 10 GK. Well, of course, that is a difference, as the 1 NSL more will save quite some chances more, but with so many chances more, it still would mean an easy win for TH, right? Wrong! GK Marcellus had the day of his life, and saved 39 out of 48 chances. On the other side, GK Veenstra had a lousy day, saving only 9 out of 19, and all of a sudden, after 90 minutes, the scoreboard said: TH: 9 – DV: 10! Mark will feel robbed, at least I know I would if this would happen to me. Will he still be able to make it to the 2nd round? He will need a miracle! Otto already had his miracle, and it was this match, so if he wants to go to the second round, he will probably have to do his best. But hey, with 2 matches left, that might be possible.

…and the TH vs DV match was not the only surprising result in this group. Check out this one! The clash between Stannington Historical and Catbel Athletic, is a match between 2 teams that took each others place in the league, as SH went from div 1 to div 2, where CA went the other way around. That might promise a match that could be close, but in reality, although it looks like both Len and Ivo spared some important players, the difference was 11.5 NSL. And that of course resulted in an even bigger EMP difference: 24 EMP. So, easy game for CA you’d think, when you know that the result of that meant 5 chances for CA, against none for SH. But not this time. It looks like CA found back its jinx! Out of 5 chances, CA only managed to score 1, and when SH were awarded a penalty, they did not think twice and made that goal, so after 90 minutes, the result was 1-1. With this draw, nothing’s decided yet, as both teams can still end at either nr. 1 or last in their group. However, if either Len or Ivo want the first to happen, they have to put more effort into it than they have shown here.

The reigning Cup Champion, FC Inferno, has a reputation to hold this season, and therefore Marco had no other choice than to approach this game very seriously. And he did. As a real champion, he did not underestimate the fact that his opponent, Magnus’ Speedsters, was a new team. FI just played a strong 90+ NSL ONE team, and that turned out to be stronger than the opposite ONE, although the SS team turned out to be quite strong too. Both teams suffered from a red card, so that didn’t make a difference, and so with 24 chances for FI against 7 for SS, the 12-4 victory in the end was fair. FI on the way to another cup success? Oh well, there are still many matches left, so everything is still possible.

African Selects against Excelsior Warren was a match between 2 teams that appeared to take this cup match equally serious: Colin fielded a 89.75 team, and Simon a 90.00 NSL team. However, the game started very dramatic for AS, when already in the very first minute CB Kendel was sent off, and AS were reduced to 10. That was a shock that AS weren’t able to recover from, and in spite of Colins brave efforts, EW had an easy win. The 20 EMP surplus for EW however, was more than AS missed from Kendel, I have to admit that, so EW would have been better anyway, but since the win is this narrow, only 0-2, who knows what might have happened. Anyway, you can call 0-2 as narrow as you want, when it comes down to it: EW has 3 points, and AS none, so Simon is a lot closer to making it to the second round.

Jeroen might be saving The Boelewieten for the league, as he rested almost all his first team players in his match against Aros VSK. Either that, or he underestimated Christers team, but the fact is that both TB and AV played an almost equally strong team in their first cup match. In fact, AV even was a little stronger, but since TB played a very solid ZD, it wasn’t good enough to create any chances. So, TB’s defense kind of killed the excitement in this game, and that resulted in a score that was already on the scoreboard before the kickoff: 0-0. This draw of course is for both teams a result that isn’t bad, as the first match is not lost, and with 2 more games coming, everything is still possible. But still, I expect that both Jeroen and Christer hoped to win this one, so maybe both mangers lost 2 points instead of winning 1.

ZD against CP usually means a goal poor match and this isn;t an exception. TB didn’t really make an effort with only 86 nsl on the pitch and allmost sure to try to become the upstart of the league! Nevertheless AV couldn’t really make a fist because of the really defensive tactic TB choose. Actually! Christer can be kind of happy because TB came 0.03 (!) emp short of a smother shot. So maybe Jeroen is the unlucky one…

In a first cup match in which Kelly obviously rested a whole bunch of Point of Napier players, while Bruce played a strong Melchester Rovers team, the difference between PN and MR wasn’t even that big. Sure, the difference in NSL was 10.50 in MR’s favour, but when it came down to the performance, in EMP it was only 2. This was just enough for MR to have 1 shot more: 22 against 21, and since MR also played with the better GK, it was enough for a 13-11. So, the result is fair, and since MR went for it while PN rested players, I think it’s good to see that the cup fighting team won, and Bruce did a good job in trying to go to the second round with MR. I don’t think Kelly will care too much, as obviously her priority will be the league, and I hope that she will do fine there.

It seems Kelly has set her sight on the league again. We all know PN is capable of a great performance but this wasn’t it. With 81 nsl on the pitch Kelly expected to lose this match and she did. I do feel a little bit sorry for this weeks league opponent of PN. MR on the other hand have a freak again and maybe this will turn things around fort hem. There emp isn’t very high yet but the victory is there! After the AV-TB daw this means they are sole leader of this group. Will they make it!

Last season’s semifinalist, InterQuartile Rangers took on the Fantastic Eleven in an evenly contested match. Both teams decided to go for offensive tactics ONE vs. WP and the better team took home the 3 points at the end of the day. Terry has the advantage of being able to field the right players in his formation, while Clive is still looking for the two players that will be the keys in his WP lineup: two top CF. The early red card to the FE’s winger in the 37th minute didn’t help their cause. In the end, the division one side still proved to strong for the new comer.

I guess we are all wondering how IQ will do in the cup this season. Last year to focussed on the cup and still managed to makei t to the semi finals. This season they have to do battle in div1 which usually means the cup has no priority. Well i guess the important word here is usually. Becuse IQ gave it a reall effort here and the rightly won. But FE it has tob e said gave it a good fight! With 90 nsl on the pitch they played to win! And usually they would have had a good chance for the reasons listed above. So i guess they are unlucky to face Terry. But not only that, they also had the referee against them which meant they lost an important player early in the match. So unlucky twice, but a great effort none the less.

A pair of division two sides locked in a battle and we saw WH vs. CP. Unless the WH team has great advantage in nsl, there is no way DS was going to win this match. And Tim managed just to do that: fielding 8 extra nsl to perform a little better than Mike’s side. The 3 points will prove to be crucial, when it comes to deciding who will be going through to the next round with the group favourite, IQ.

The historically underperforming DS face the old glory of GU and look at the result! DS played a sold 95 nsl and beat GU with no luck involved. It has to be said though that GU didn't really made an effort. It looks like Mike is conserving his strenght for the league. If he want to get back in div1 to regain some of that glory that is a wise decision i guess. For DS things are looking good in the cup. Well good, they do have to face cup giant IQ very soon.

Fanatic United went into the match, knowing it will be a tough job to take points against one of the strongest division side, Apocalypse who finished fourth last season. Brian decided to play it smart and chose OFF to counter Martin’s predictable WP. It would have worked, but FU was resting most of its key players and played a weaken side with almost 20 nsl difference between the two teams. Not choosing a captain might have also costed FU a few emp, but it didn’t matter as AP totally dominated the game and produced 20 shots more than its counterpart.

Martin has a good, very good team this season. And unlike other div1 teams he didn't let himself be surprised by the surprisingly good performing div3 teams. 91 nsl on the pitch combined with a solid WP-tactic give him a comfertable victory. I don't think the FU will be very disappointed becuse with an nsl 4 and a 5 on the pitch you know it's going to be though against a Div1 team. He did however played a smart off tactic which shows a good understanding of the game! Well done for both managers and congratz to Martin! Now he needs to see his opposition below..

Nik of Falcons (again) managed to choose the right tactic against a second division side of England U-21, but fell short to the superiority of Mike’s team. The difference in emp is simply too huge and resulted in 18 compared to 5 shots to EU. It will always be an uphill task for the third division team, but the focus is probably in the league for now as Nik will find it difficult to rotate between the league and cup matches.

EU has an impressive team when you look at it. Just take a look at those forwards! Two freaks including a new great CF. Because of that the nsl EU put on the field was none the less then 98.75. A nsl that most div1 teams are only dreaming of! Nevertheless the Falcons gave it a good try. There MM tactic was nothing less then perfect but the nsl on the pitch was just too much for them. What is good to know for the Falcons is that the the emp difference was less then the nsl difference! So great emp, great tatic and a great performance by them. The problem is, they never stood a chance.. EU will soon face AP for the top spot in this group and i'm curious to see how that will work out.
