DIVISION 1 GAMES

InterQuartile Rangers have shown some quality in their first 2 matches, and have proven to be able to make quite some EMP, but somehow they weren't lucky in cashing that, converting it into points, as they lost those first 2 matches. Lisbon United on the other hand did a lot better in their first 2 matches. Although it looks like they are not as very good anymore as they were in the previous seasons (when they still had some freaks in their team), they still have a very solid CP, and so LU still without defeat, with 4 points out of 2 matches. And steady enough to be a tough opponent to IQ this week. And tough they were. However, where Terry was a little unfortunate in the previous matches, this week he is lucky to see 1 of his players leave the field with a red card. Lucky you say? Yes indeed, but only because Nuno saw 2(!) of his players leave the field with a red card, and at an early stage of the match too! I think both teams would have been equally good, but the red cards were decisive, and this time it was in IQ's favour: 1-0.

NoShaKi WC '98 against Catbel Athletic not only meant the clash of last seasons runner up in everything (League, cup, world cup): Mike, and Ivo, who just got back in div 1 with CA, but it also meant the clash between the 2 highest EMPing teams in div 1 this week. Great match you'd think. Match of the week maybe? No, it wasn't, because actually it was a rather dull game. NW was still without any points, and CA had won their first 2 matches, so Mike decided to take no risk, forgot about his WP, that had caused him some losses (maybe because a NSL 10 GK is quite important when playing WP), and played a strong ZD. Ivo was able to put up more than 101 NSL on the pitch, and with a strong CP that resulted in almost 137 EMP, which is very respectable in an away game, without playing a GC. But it was not enough to beat that solid ZD that Mike played. Had this been a home game for CA, then they would probably have had a smother shot, but now the difference was too little, and 0-0 was a fair result. First point for NW this season, and the first loss of points for CA. However, Ivo will be happy that he did not lose this difficult away game, as any other team will have a tough job to fact this NW in the Mystical Arena, and not lose points. And Mike will be happy that he did not lose this one, but I guess 3 points would have been more welcome.

Both Apocalypse and FC Inferno have won and lost a game so far this season, so with 3 points they are mid-table teams. A victory for either team could create a gap immediately. So, both Martin and Marco played attacking, hoping that creating a lot of chances would be enough to score the goals that would bring them the victory. And that resulted in an attractive match, with no less than 65 chances. AP turned out to be a little better, in NSL, in EMP, and because of that also in chances: 34 against 31. But in chances, a 34 against 31 difference is very very little, so the form of the GK's would have to decide the winner of this game. Both AP and FI played with a NSL 10 GK, but C. Ryan was in a somewhat better form than G. Coutinho, and so FI was the luckiest: 15-13. FI in the subtop, and AP still with 3 points, but no need to worry yet.

Oaklake City has not been able to score yet, since they are back in div 1, but maybe today, in their home game against The Boelewieten, they would be able to make their supporters cheer. Both OC and TB have won 1 point so far, as they lost 1 game, and played a 0-0 at home. Would today bring the first victory for one of these teams? Yes it did! Keith played a very strong CP, with over 130 EMP, and that simply was too much for Jeroens ZD. Sure, the red card for FB Tyler was a great loss for TB, as it meant a loss of 13.44 NSL. But the difference in EMP was 20.87 now, so it still would have been a 7.43 difference in OC's advantage. Wich would have been enough for 2 or 3 smother shots. And looking at their scoring rate this match, TB would have lost this one anyway. So, both teams started with 1 point, and a victory for 1 team would mean that team would go to a stable mid-table position, while the other team might start to get worried, as they could get in trouble. TB is that team to worry, and actually I hope for Jeroen that he rested some important players, as this weeks side did not look that strong. OC on the other hand showed a solid performance. With CM Wictoria playing, they have become quite strong, and that might turn out to be strong enough to win them the points to stay in div 1 this season. It might not be enough to win the title, as Wictoria also has to rest now and then, but OC is a team to worry about if you are to play against them, especially when they play at the Dome of the Oaks.

The match between Jazz Greats and Tottenford Heats is not just another dutch clash, (very important because it decides who is the best dutch manager!), it also means the clash of the previous 2 Champions of div 1. Out of the first 2 matches, TH has been able to win 3 points, against only 1 for JG (so not very champions-like, so far). A win for TH would bring TH back to the top, and would bring JG into serious trouble, while a win for JG would bring both teams at the lower half of mid-table. And a draw would be bad for both teams actually. Mark played a strong CP team, although I don't think he played his strongest possible formation. Bart, on the other side, apparently DID play his strongest formation, as he is in need of points. We will never know if that would have been enough for a regular victory. What we do know, is that after TH saw 2 players leave the field with a red card, it was more than enough for a very secure victory: with 131 EMP against only 107 for TH (mind you, Mark lost (7.44+11.29=)18.73 EMP here!), the victory was big for JG: 24-13. Does this mean that JG is back? We'll see. Mark will probably be sad about this loss and the 2 red cards, but he won't be in trouble, as I guess he will win his points in the matches that TH ends with 11 players.

Only 3 teams have been able to win both their first matches: CA, EW and AA. We already saw that CA played 0-0 against NW, so this clash between Excelsior Warren And Alcohol Anonymous was very interesting. A draw would mean that we would still have the same 3 leaders, and a victory for either team would mean that we have a number 1 with 2 points ahead. EW is known for their strong LB, but Simon also knows how to play a very strong defense. On the other hand, Nathan has a pretty good WP team, but he's also capable of switching to a very strong other tactics, like CP or BC. Well, in this case, it looks like Simon expected Nathan to play WP. And instead of playing his own strong LB, in which case we would have an attacking match with lots of chances and lots of goals, he decided to play a counter tactics: OFF. But this plan did not work. First of all because already in the 2nd minute, CB Modyford had to leave the field with a red card, which left the EW rather weak in EMP. But second, and more important, because Nathan apparently outsmarted Simon in this one, and didn't play WP, but CP instead. The sudden OFF by EW did not affect his EMP at all, and AA performed very good: almost 132 EMP! And that against only 98 for EW. The difference in chances was huge: 32 against 3, and it was only because of the GK's performances on both sides, that AA's victory wasn't any bigger than 13-2. Nathan will probably care less, as AA is back where we haven't seen them for a while: leading Division 1. EW on the other hand are still only 1 win away, so Simon is still in the race for the top places though.
