PRESS REPORT
DIVISION 1
Alcohol Anonymous
A HISTORY OF SAEFL & AA (Seasons 1)– FROM LITTLE ACORNS, VERY PISSED PEOPLE PLAY FOOTBALL
SAEFL will
always be present in the hearts of managers in the league, and I am no
exception. Thinking about last weeks
press (how to play SAEFL), I wondered how those loose rules had aided or
hindered my current club, Alcohol Anonymous, in their quest for league domination
over the years.
For many people, AA have become one of the key brand names in SAEFL – akin to Arsenal in the league (Peter : At first I thought you should have put United but after reading some more I understand now why you didn’t, you could have used Liverpool, well if you turn the table upside down they near the top then J) – always around the top (well, nearly always), but rarely winning anything! So why? And what makes certain clubs stable and successful, and others less so. We will take a look over the next 11 weeks as history of SAEFL is played out.
Season 1
And SAEFL begins with much excitement from those involved. AA started week 1, season 1 with a 77 NSL side – amazing considering the 100+ NSL teams that are a regular occurrence these days. The team included a 7 NSL keeper, and a CB 7.5, CB 7, FB 6 backline. So from that, you can tell that the club was not always based on defensive play J. In fact, ONE was played in Week 1, and it saw a victory for the club against AF (not sure who AF have become (Peter : It was the mighty IQ – this was the only time I ever changed a team name and it happened in season 1 week 2 I think))), who played an even worse side and came off worse by the tune of 11-4. (Peter : Did they not win the title in season 1 ??)
As the review of the league said that week, “AA totally over run an under-strength AF side … Bloody Mary of AA get the first Hattrick in the SAEFL scoring 4 of the 11 goal's with the Midfield of AA scoring 8 of the 11 goals”.
One of the key things in SAEFL is to pick a captain, and AA did that very well with CB Amstel. With some teams Emping only 10 EMP above NSL, and JG only Emping 5 points over NSL tut tut tut), not every manager picked the right man for the all important armband. (Peter : Captain is KEY !!!)
Not all teams played to their strengths their. AF played WP with only 1 CF and no striker. CA played TS with 2 DS and 1 CB. NW played WP with only one CF (Peter : Mike still does that J) – and I could go on. Perhaps it was more a case of limited squads rather than limited managers (@;-)) at this time.
Notable players from week 1 included MF M. Draper from CA, DM F. George from AS, AS Feelleepes from GU, MF R. Keane from NH, CF M. Salas from NW and CF Miles Davis from JG.
Another
shock from week 1 was that Mike Suwandi actually
wrote a lot of press (good for the bank balance). Wonders will never cease ;). No trades in week 1 – I presume they were
banned at this point.
Week 2 saw AA
get thumped by JG. The Greats showed by
it is so important to play the right tactic – picking MM against the Alcies WH, and decimating the away sides EMP in the
process.
Trades
started in week 2. AA brought Hoegaarden for 114k.
Good deal J.
And Mike wrote more press – bad deal ;-)
Trades were
thin on the ground at the beginning of Season 1. Managers were obviously treading the ground
carefully – fearful of making mistakes.
Little has changed there, then.
Did you know
that Season 1 had cup replays? I didn’t
– but in week 7, we have the proof in the CA-IQ pudding. In the end, the game went to a penalty
shootout after the clubs failed to score against each other (nothing has
changed there).
Managers
were obviously getting clever by this time.
Realising that they didn’t have the squads to make use of WP, LB, TS and
ZD, plenty of MM’s were played quite
effectively. 4 were played in week 7
alone. How times change J.
Week 8 and the importance of getting lucky in the draft. GU bid $155,000 for DS 7 19 McGoo. He would go on to be a huge star of SAEFL (Peter : I think the best Defender ever). Two points to note here – now all 7 NSL DS’s go on to be freaks, and check out how little cash a manager could get a 7 19 for. In comparison, a 9+ GK (29) went for around the 400k mark a week earlier. More emphasis on immediate NSL at this stage, then.
Naming
players is an odd business, and week 9 highlights some odd bods
in SAEFL. Check out these names and lets
see if any of you managers can pinpoint their teams and positions (and even
NSL) in next weeks press. Just for fun
mind – no cheating ;)

Week 10, and
press from JG – “I'm to busy to write press and want to
get orders in for Peter”. That kind of sentiment touches me!
The
importance of a captain is flagged up in week 11. NH v GU.
78 emp v 79.
0 v 0 (final score). NH pick a
keeper as captain. Ouch!
Week 12
shows stats from the first half of the season, and they make interesting
reading. Tactics – WH played 18% of the
time. MM played 15% of the time; this
compares with WP being played 9%, and CP only 6%! Poor old TC only just bear NMR by 2.27% to
1.51%. WH might have been played a lot,
but it was not being played very well.
It only accounted for 28 points out of a possible 72 (24 games) at that
time – probably in part because of the use of MM.

Week 13 –
and AA show how not to use a grudge.
Admittedly they didn’t know that JG wouldn’t turn up (No tactic), but
the grudge ensured a 22-1 win. How JG
got 1, I’ll never know! The week also
shows an odd use of style, with clubs like OC and IQ using MC style with
WP. These managers had to “unlearn
what they had learned”.
Oh, and FI won for the first time in week 13!
The importance of being lucky in picking commy players (part 2) – Week 13 saw CA pick up FB B. Berlinnin 18 3.75 for only 40k. CA should have known the club was getting a good player (and what a player J) when Peter said “i cannot beleive he when only for 40k !!!!” (Peter does not know what players will turn out like – but this was foreboding stuff). (Peter : Watch the Transfer list next week J , lets see who read the press J) This also shows the importance of NOT sacking players because they are low NSL. Berl’s development will be highlighted in future AA press.
Just under the Berlinnin deal, NH were looking to sell S. T. Sherrngham 32 3 nsl for 25k. Wonder which deal out of Berlinnin and Shery was the better! J
Peter occasionally does the unexpected. Week 15 saw him put 3 GK on the transfer list. Week 16 saw Mike (NW) buy all 3 - GK 24 7,25 195K; GK 23 6,5 175K; GK 27 7 155K.
Week 19 – and when NOT to play a grudge part 2:
IQ HOME WP MC (GRUDGE) NSL 85.75 - EMP 132.82
NH away WH RG NSL 75.5 - EMP 84.39
Result = 12-0
So, we come to week 21. Two interesting things happen here. IQ become the first champions of the league, and OC show that, when buying a star CF, you can really improve your EMP.
CF Screwdriver (at this stage 10 NSL) emped 22.29 with a grudge and the aid of a WP tactic to destroy CA. Fascinatingly though, the club he was sold from (AA – now let’s see which managers read my press as a little bit of the quiz above is given away) went on to be more successful than OC over the coming seasons.
Why? Well, Edwin, then manager of AA, was a superb trader and had a good eye for a player. He realised that Screw was never going to fit into his tactics (although he was playing ONE at this time, I guess he was moving down the road to defensive bliss at this time), and decided that he could get a good trade for him.
Oh how I wish I
could trade like Ed – I just end up giving away my best players as Christmas
presents ;)
Seasons 2 & 3 will flag up the ability of Ed and other managers to trade well in more detail.
GU went on to win the cup in Week 22. CF R. Chubenko of InterQuartile Rangers won the best player of the season award for Nigel Gregory with a final EMP of 303.70.

Excelsior
From
the Excelsior Herald...
Well
we were waiting for it and now it has happened. Excelsior were beaten every
which way by a rampant Alcoholics. Tactically out thought, physically out
played and mentally crushed.
This
week sees the sanctuary of the cup, if that is what you can call third division
opposition looking for a first division scalp. Already the words 'season'
'hard' and 'long' can be heard being muttered in the bars and brothels around
the stadium.
F.C Inferno
Lucky
win! It's always good to see the goalkeeper deciding the game on our favor...
Now it's cup time and we do have a name to defend. AS won't be at all an easy
adversary, playing defensively they can hold us and try to score on an eventual
counter attack or a PK. Let's wait and see!
On
the league, CA is making a bold move and is a clear title favorite after the
initial weeks. Can they be stopped?
InterQuartile Rangers
I
agree that I probably had less EMP before the cards. But why doesn't it surprise me? So far, in league play for IQ it's been the
team with the lower EMP that ends up winning!
So much for letting the better man win... Actually, I had 30 minutes with a 2 player
advantage. You'd think I'd manage more
than 3 shots with that type of advantage.
Well,
Wambach is becoming a disappointment. 2 shots with no goals. It's becoming a pattern. It's especially disconcerting since I
typically play 4-5-1 and 3-6-1. With
only 1 player up front they really need to convert when they have a chance!
Still,
3 red cards in one game is a lot. I'm
just glad that I didn't get the 2 cards.
But it just wasn't one game. $ of
the 6 Div games had red cards. 2 of them
with 2 cards to one team. 1 with 3 cards
total. That's 7 cards for 6 games. Was someone giving the referees Ex-Lax or
something else to make them irritable???
That
leaves the cup game this week. Last
season I played DS twice in league games.
Both times I benefited from implosions of the team. Can I be that lucky this early in the season?
Looking
at the stats, IQ is up one place in EMP/NSL ratio so it's not that I'm doing
something stupid. I ask again, is it
enough?

We heve had some odd games in a very strong league this year.
First objective is to keep TB in first division. Second objective is to cut
on red
cards, that alone cost us several points. This weeks game a cup game, and we
gamble, we gamble a lot. I depend on that PN is resting players,
if not, its
another killing field in this 11th season. And playing LB, i
am very curious for stats of some players, we must have a chance of winning the
game.
So, in
short, I gamble, I am worried, and I hope not to be the laughing stock of this
week.
And, when
we win this week, next game in the cup with my strong 11, going to the second

Press (AP): It looks like ES have your number. Last season ES handily won a
critical game in the fight for a playoff spot. This seasons 11-4 loss is not a
good thing.
Manager
Fulmer (MF): Yes, Peter has done a very good job against the last couple of
meetings. ES is developing quite nicely.
AP: The AR
fans are beginning to wonder if they will have a strong side.
MF: You
mean both of our fans? It won’t hurt them to wait a little longer. After all, looking
at the published numbers, AR is the worst ranked side of the 24 team that
existed before this season. They have a winning % of 25, the next worst is 31.
A few more losses while AR is developing won’t hurt.
AP: Has AR
shown any signs of improvement? If they have, you have hidden them well.
MF: Tell
both of your readers to watch the matches and not just read the box scores and
they will se improvement. AR played a reasonably competitive match against ES
even though the score was 11-4. We created 18 shots on goal, but only finished
4. That is a matter of experience. They need to develop more composure in
scoring situations. Players have been developing very well in training, it will
just take awhile until the improvement shows up in the games.
AP: Do you
think you have the players on the current roster to build a strong side, or
does Trader Don have more work to do?
MF: We have
collected a lot of very promising attacking players and they are developing
quite nicely. We have focused on acquiring attacking players first because it
takes quite awhile to develop their skills and tactical understanding. The next
step is to add some muscle and acquire some strong defenders. Defenders do not
require the same degree of skill development so we did not acquire them as
early. We are in the process of building our defense
now. They will have this season to learn to play together before we push for
the Division 2 crown next season.
AP: While
you are dreaming, any thoughts on this weeks cup match against AA?
MF: Our
fortunate win against NW in the first round has put us in good shape. Even if
we lose to AA, we can make it to the next round by beating BS. Nathan does not
usually focus on the cup, so we could be in for a very boring match. A 0-0 draw
would suit me fine. Hopefully next week we can talk about match performance and
not building for the future. Again.

Well
last week was another tie for us, which is pretty surprising for our team.
This
was our second tie in three games when we have gone through two previous
seasons without a single tie. Its pretty
weird, though still better than losing.
We are now in fifth place in Division Two though not far behind the
people in front of us. I suppose I am
rather tired of being reminded about being a favorite for promotion. Last year no one expected anything from PN
and yet we almost got promoted- almost came in first place even. This year everyone expects a bunch from PN
and we are only in fifth place. Oh well,
its only Week
5 we
have a lot of the season left.
This
week is a cup week so we do not care so much about winning and all. We play a Division 1 team so we probably will
lose because we mostly have our second string playing. We do not care that much though because we
are focusing on the league this season.
Even though we tied again, we are still undefeated, now with only three
other teams.

The
question this week is will
"Last
week was always going to be tough. Deo Volante are a good team.
Having Thomas Hintzelsperger sent off in the
third minute didn't help and it possibly cost us the game. Our players did have a higher NSL and with
Thomas missing 95% of the game really hurt." David said. "However having said, would we have been
able to score the other 11 goals needed to at least draw. It is too hard to say.
One thing
can be said about last week though. More
trades were made and players signed.
These players will help strengthen the defense
and also the couple of strikers in the last two weeks, will help boost the
attack which seems lacking as most of the goals are coming from the
midfielders.
The cup
match this week is against Druss Legends who
performed well last week in a very attacking game in division 2 against Dead
Scientists. DL have a very high quality
team and this will not be at all an easy game for
Our first
question comes from John Smith and he asks, "Where do you think the
kickers will finish this season?"
Well John, initially
after the first two weeks, I was thinking that pormotion
was a good possibility. Now though with
the current form 8th looks more likely.
The trades of the last couple of weeks though have helped to make the
team more solid in defense and potent in attack,
though a couple more higher rated
players will help bring the team NSL up and make them more competitive.

Once
again AV face a stronger team in the cup. MR who used to be a very strong
WP-team are next for AV. MR have lost some of their former strength so maybe AV
can put an upset on the board. Our best team will play here both to see what we
can do against the top of div 2 and to give ourselves a chance to win the game.
Last
week AV lost against FA due to a sending off. This was not good for our hopes
to gain promotion but there´s still plenty of time to
regain momentum in the league.

Unless GK Marcellus has another great day.
Trading
away high NSL players for youth is starting to hurt as i'm

Specially
trading away my best defender to Brian's FU will greatly diminish my chances of

I like winning, but I can't help but think that the rest league are not doing their part. I have won every league game but still not on top, can nobody beat TS and DV, do I have to do everything myself??? And it's really not hard to beat DV, he is playing with "bunch of grandpa's", and TS is held up by one player emp ing for two, who almost lost last week against a manager that I don't even know if he is alive? Nice thought though, just one red card (or twisted ankle) and the game is yours, and he has had one red card before.
Unfortunately there will not be not write up on a player in this press release as I have not seen much of the team this week to interview one of the players. I have been in the hospital allot with P. Adorso-II, he's fine, he's fine, there was just a bit of a fight with S. Squig, and Squig just took a bit from his leg. Adorso-II will be fine he just needs to rest and went in to the hospital for stitches, so I just booked him in there for some 24 hour care. He has learnt his lesson, and I don't think there will be any more fights.
Here is a nice pic of my trophies:
