CUP GROUP GAMES GAME 2

Both Oaklake City and The Jazz won their first cup match, so winning this match would almost certainly mean qualification for the next cup round. For Oaklake City however, the cup appears to have not as much priority as the league. Being the new team in div 1, OC of course wants to extend that stay, and looking at their first matches in div 1, they are doing a good job. However, as a result of that, they have to rest some good players now and then, and looking at the 84.75 NSL put on the pitch, Keith must have thought that this week was a good opportunity, as making it to the next round is one thing, but making it to let’s say the semi-finals is another thing, and that might not suit a team that is putting all its effort into a good league position. The Jazz, on the other hand, took this match a little bit more seriously. They fielded 92 NSL (also because of the boost they played), which should make a strong team, especially with the div 2 bonus added. And it did. Stewart was a little lucky that his Freak AS was one of the players to be rewarded the boost-bonus, because that made him even stronger! Eventually, TJ was stronger than OC, and that was not surprising. They had 10 EMP more, (also because of the red card for GK Haffner, but that only happened in the 82th minute, so it did not make much of a difference.) and in the end that resulted in 3 shots for TJ against only 1 for OC. Both GK’s were in good shape though, and saved all chances. No goals there, so 0-0 might have been a result that Stewart could have lived with. However, OC was awarded a penalty, and they did not miss that, so in the end, the scoreboard showed 1-0 for OC, and left TJ empty-handed. This is really what they call a stolen victory, and I can understand that Stewart will feel robbed. He simply is.

Smoking Guns against Vitesse Arnhem is not just a match between 2 div 3 teams, but also a match between 2 teams that lost their opening match. So, a victory was needed if any of them still had hopes for a good result in the cup. A defeat would mean the end, and a draw might not be so good either. Both teams fielded almost exactly the same NSL, although SG played attacking where VA played defense. And that defense did the trick. VA just had more balance, in the way that Wouter had the most players on the right position (getting the bonus!), and that resulted in quite some more EMP: 99.44 against 90.83. And that was enough for 2 chances for VA, against 1 for SG. Since, VA managed to score both chances, and SG missed theirs, the 2-0 victory was enough to keep the VA hopes up for a little stunt in the cup. Sure, Iman won’t be too happy about the red card for P.Shaw, but even if he would have finished the game, VA still would have won, as 1-0 would have been enough as well.

Both Jazz Greats and Newton Heath already won their first cup match, so once again we have the situation that a victory would be most likely enough to make it to the next round. Robbert already proved to be a true cup fighter in season 9, and once again showed no respect for the once so mighty JG. He put up a decent 91.75 WH, and that proved to be a solid team. Bart on the other hand did not play his strong WP team. So either his best players were in need of rest, or he tried to outsmart Robert, with his 89.50 NSL MM tactics. For Barts reputation as a good manager, I don’t hope it is the latter, as you have to try something better to beat NH like that. So NH turned out to be the better team. The 12 EMP difference resulted in 9 shots more, and that was enough for a 10-6 victory. We will see NH back in the 8th final, and if JG wants to be there too, they have to beat TS in their last group match.

….but will TS let that happen? Well, you never know. What we do know, is that Travis does not have any chances with Trav Spoodle to make it to that next cup round, as he already lost his first match, and now loses again, in the match against Defrosted Tunafish. You can’t blame Travis though, his new team has not the strength yet to be good (speaking of rotation) in both league AND cup. And it’s obvious where the TS priorities are this season. Did that mean an easy match for Claudio? Well, yes and no. Yes because DT indeed was much better, even though they did not even have to go all the way (both teams with NSL below 70), they were obviously the better team. DT had 16 EMP more, and that resulted in 37 chances against 22 for TS. Which is the no, regarding the easy match. Of course, the 15 chances more should have to be enough for a victory, but with these numbers of chances, and playing with a lesser GK, you just never know. (Ask Mark from TH!). However, in this case the best team won, so DT still has chances to make it to the next round, although it will be tough, as they have to beat NH to do so.

The match between Alcohol Anonymous and Adirondak Renegades is yet another match between 2 teams that both won their first match. However, since AA won the toughest match (against NW), Nathan actually already was a little secure of making it to the next round. All he had to do is be careful not to make too big mistakes. In this match against AR, AA made no mistakes at all, so we will see AA back in the next round. Not that this match was easy for AA though. Don dig in deep, played defense, and gambled on a sneaky draw. And he came close, as Nathan knew that he did not have to go all the way, rested some players, and so the difference between these teams wasn’t that big, and that rendered AA 2 chances, against 1 for AR. In fact, if AR would have scored their chance just as good as they scored their penalty, they even would have made that draw! But they didn’t and so the best team won this match, quite fair.

The other match in group 3 was between Blue Storm FC and NoShaKi WC’98, the 2 teams that lost their first match. So, a win would bring either team next to AR, and that would mean being still in the race for the next round. As a reigning cup finalist, Mike made clear that, besides AA, there is only 1 team that should go to the next cup round in this group, and that is NW. Just look at him playing: 95.50 NSL, almost 130 EMP (which was only 0.06 EMP from this weeks top score!), and 28 chances! (You might think he was playing CA!). That of course was more than enough to really outclass BS, who in fact did not create a single chance. You never know of course, but I don’t reckon that Berto thought he would beat NW. But he will not have guessed either that he would be beaten this hard! BS are out of the cup with this second defeat, and NW will have to fight against AR for the a place in the next round. If I were Don (thank God I’m not!), and I would see these stats, I would be very, very afraid of Mike!

Nuno has never had much interest in the cup. Usually, he has his focus on the league, and uses these cup matches to rest players. This season, nothing has changed that. Lisbon United already lost their first match to AK, so if they would want to make it to the second round, they had to beat Englehart Storm. But once again, Nuno rested most of his best players, and since Peter played a solid WH with ES, who are pretty strong this season, LU leave the cup early once more, as ES was just better, they won, and they deserved it: 0-2. Since ES already won their first match, against DL, this second win means that we will see ES back in the next cup round! Well done Peter!

Adelaide Kickers surprised (although, can you really call it a surprise?) LU last week, and this week they faced Druss Legends, who are a title candidate in div 2. DL sure have good team, but I can understand that Martijns first priority will be in the league. However, he still fielded quite a good team, looking at what he played, I bet he wanted to win this match too. But David appears to be a quick learner. He too noticed that OFF is a nice tactics to dismantle WP. And not even did David dismantle DL’s WP, it turned out that AK was able to create some pretty nice EMP as well. That even rendered AK 14 chances, against 13 for DL. In spite of his lower NSL, GK O. Mejohan performed real good, and so both AK and DL scored 6 goals. David has to beat ES in the next match to be sure of the next cup round, and even a draw might be enough. DL on the other hand has to beat LU in their next match, if they want to have a chance to make it to the next round, and even if they do, they don’t have it in their own hands.

The biggest stunt in the first cup week was without a doubt Deo Volentes stunning victory over TH. Could they pull that trick again? Well, all it takes now, for Otto, is another victory in one of the 2 remaining matches to make it to the last 16 teams in the cup. This weeks match would be a tough one though, as Catbel Athletic turns out to be one of the stronger teams this season. That doesn’t say much of course, as in the previous cup round, CA was a lot stronger than SH (much like TH actually was a little bit stronger than DV), and still could not win because lady luck had other plans. This week however, Otto didn’t play as good a team as the last time. Otto probably figured that the victory he needs to make it to next round, will be easier against SH then it is against CA. Which is not a bad idea of course. Ivo rested 9 of his first 11 players, and still managed to get quite a decent EMP. That was more than DV could defend with their solid ZD, and so the victory was for CA, although it wasn’t big: 3-0. With this result, both DV and CA are still in the race, so what will SH and TH have done?

Looking at all the emails that Mark wrote about his loss against DV, I do not think that he will be able to lose all his frustrations about this in the current season. Anyway, this victory over Stannington Historical might shut him down for a week, hopefully. Mark clutched his last straw, and gave his best to try to make it to the next cup round with TH. It was an easy victory, as apparently Len did not believe in it, just look at it: the difference in NSL was 22, the difference in EMP even 40 (!). Of course, this was enough for TH to win: 5-1. So, in group 5 CA has 4 points now, where TH and DV have 3 points. If DV manages to beat SH next cup match, DV will qualify for the next round. TH and CA will be playing against each other, and that match proves to be interesting. If either team manages to win that match, they will most likely be in the second round 2. In case of a draw, things really get interesting. Ivo might just have enough points to make it to the 2nd cup round with CA, being one of the 7 best nrs. 2. However, if DV might not beat SH, a draw between TH and CA would mean that even Mark can hope that 4 points will be enough to be amongst the best numbers 2. Is that realistic? To be honest, I don’t think so. And so, Mark really has to beat CA next match if he wants to make it to the last 16 teams in the cup. Which will be very, very hard, as CA has a strong team, and they will most likely field DM Thor in this match. Mark could have used a player like Thor in his effort to win, but he sold him to…….CA! Man, will Mark play a grudge in this match? We will wait and see…..

FC Inferno, the reigning Cup winner won their first match, and in their second match, they face the African Selects, who lost their first match, and really needed to win this one to still have a chance to make it to the next round. Colin tried his best, and fielded a good team. But of course, Marco did the same (Noblesse oblige !), and so they both fielded almost the same high NSL, around 93. Marco's team was just a little bit more in balance, looking at the players that go with the tactics, and how good those players are, and so his performance was just a little better. Not very much, but it was enough for 1 smother shot. But that smother shot was just enough to score the winning goal, and that brings FI to the next round, and makes that AS have to concentrate on the league. And looking at their performance this week, I bet AS can climb quite a few places in the league if they maintain this level.

Here's another match between a team that lost last match (Speedsters), and a team that won their first match (Excelsior Warren). Simon knew that if he won this match, he would be in the next cup round, while Magnus knew that he had to win if he still wanted a chance on that. And I don't even know if Magnus went for that last chance, but what I do know is that Simon did not even have to put much effort into it, and still be much better. 1-7. EW's LongBall was once again very effective, and after 2 matches, FI and EW have 6 points, where AS and SS are still empty-handed. I really think that 6 points is enough to be amongst the best nrs. 2, and so next weeks matches are just for the fun of it.

The difference in NSL wasn’t that big, with both teams playing on the counter, but AV sure had the better EMP: the difference was near 15! That of course, was enough for a victory. AV had 10 chances more, and the 10-7 wasn’t that big in the end, but still big enough for the 3 points. The situation in group 7 is very exciting now: Both AV and TB have 4 points, and MR has 3. PN is out of the race, but for the other 3 teams, everything is still possible. MR and TB will be playing each other, so the winner of that game will most likely be secured of the next round. AV has to beat PN to do the same. Will be continued next week.

Both InterQuartile Rangers and Dead Scientists won their first match, so once again: the winner of this match will be sure of making it to the next round. And once again, Terry shows us that he is one of the most dangerous cup figters in the entire game, as once again he shows us what IQ is good at: winning cup matches. Don't get me wrong: I'm not saying that they are not good at league matches, but at least Terry is a manager that does not save his players in the cup. And we like that . Tim played a nice team for the second cup match in a row, but where that was enough to beat MR last time, it was not enough to cope with IQ, who in this form look like they are ready for the semi-finals again. IQ with 6 points are already with the last 16 teams, and DS still have a chance to make it too, if they manage to beat FE next week. Unless FE against GU has a winner in GU, and GU manages to beat IQ next cup week. In that case, we would have 3 teams with 6 points, and the goal difference will be decisive. To be continued as well!!

The second match in Group 8 was between GU, who obviously wanted to make up for the first round loss, and FE who is already planning for next seasons revenge. Michael came out firing and created 29 chances, while Clive attacked but used less than his best side and could not create any opportunities. GU faces a tough match next week against double winner IQ to try and advance to the next round. Clive is free to concentrate on the league, unless he wants to through a little surprise into DS plans.

The top match in Group 9 this week featured the winners from Cup week 1, AP and EU. Both teams took an attacking approach to the game, but EU obviously saved their best for their Division 2 title run. They played less than their best side, but were still able to create a lot of chances. AP GK B Wijnen did his job and made sure that AP secured the victory. Congratulations to AP on taking a commanding lead in the group!

The second match in Group 9 was between 2 Division 3 sides looking to recover from first round losses. FU played a much stronger side than round one and it paid off! The CP tactics were enough to create 8 shots to FAs one. FU needs to sneak in an upset next round to advance, while FA should consider this learning experience for future cups.
