PRESS REPORT

DIVISION 1

A HISTORY OF SAEFL & AA (Season 2) – RIVALRIES ARE BORN, LEGENDS ARE CREATED

Season 1 of SAEFL saw IQ victorious in the league, and showed that with any new game (ooh, I just called SAEFL a game – I can see the Babcock police coming to take me away any day now @;-))) (Peter : Yes its not a game it’s a life style J), that the use of tactics by managers was not always well advised, even considering that most teams didn’t have a big pool of players to select from.

Still, the season was a big success overall, and with a selection of youth players (with managers hopefully taking into account their future player and tactical needs), season 2 began with a BANG.

Oh – before I continue, the results of last weeks player test.  I gave you the name of 4 players for you to then decide which team they played for, position they tried to occupy, and, for bonus points, their ability to do so (NSL) (the first half of the season). I can now confirm the results:

S Smooch – S, GU. 4.25

Screwdriver – CF, AA, 10 (a great centre forward that did not always produce his best at AA.  He had to move to OC to truly show off his silky skills)

J. Bleach – MF, PN, 7.5

Jay – GK, CA, 9.75 (a class GK in his day)

£1 extra will be credited to your club roster accounts if you got all of them right (and if any of you did, you must have cheated ;))

Season 2

Season 2 started with a fanfare for one particular reason – the creation of a division 2.  So a little more work for Peter, and a LOT more work for me as I look through the seasons (damn, I thought SAEFL stuck with the one division ;)).

Looking at the teams that were created at the beginning of season 2, it’s interesting to note which teams have prospered, and which have not.

EW, EU, LU, TB, ES, TJ, HD, DS, AR, TH, DL, AP.

Out of those, the teams that have obviously progressed a great deal are LU, TH and AP.  EW, TB and a couple other teams have experienced the thrill of promotion and gut-wrenching relegation, while teams like DS and AR have, to my knowledge, never been promoted (or relegated for that matter ;)) – but perhaps my memory is playing up on me.  I’ll let you decide why LU, TH and AP have been successful in getting promotion and staying up.

Anyway, week one got off to an inauspicious start, with AS, GU and ES not selecting captains.  “Doh!” – a potential 5%+ (Peter : see not even old farts I mean managers at this games know the rules is 10% J) loss for team EMP; and with AS losing by 2 goals and GU losing by 3 goals, the importance of selecting a team leader is really shown in detail.  Even if a manager is not sure of his best captain, pick one – it’s better to make a bad choice than no choice at all.  If the individual you select is no good at leading other men, then at least you will know not to put a star by his name again. J

On the player front, and things are warming up nicely.  The following players in particular spring to mind:

NW – CF, M. Salas, 9.5

JG – CF, Miles Davis, 10

IQ – FB, S. Campbell, 9.5

EU – CM, J. Cole, 9.5

LU – MF, L. Figo, 10

TB – CF, G. Schockaert, 9

And the league saw its first freaks created!!

NH – S, E. Nevland 12.5

TJ – CF, GOONIE, 12.5 – (Peter: Oh I remember this guy , Question for 10 points which Div1 team stole him from Div2 ?)

Out of these two, Goonie (I’m not going to capitalise him throughout this press) was the first real superstar of SAEFL, and I will try and pick out some of his performances in this press.  In week 1, he captained his side, emping 21.38, and scored a goal to shoot his side to a 9-16 win over ES.

Week 1 also saw improvement for DS McGoo from GU.  The 7 19 buy shifted up to 7.75 NSL, and emped an impressive 9.3 points.  This would have been decent at home with a defensive tactic – but the fact that GU were away from home playing a ONE tactic showed that this lad could be something special if he applied himself – and boy did he apply himself J

Oddly enough, managers were still reluctant to trade this early in the season, with only three swap deals made.

We talked last week about huge NSL and EMP, and how this was not always the way in SAEFL.  A game in week 2 proved that the league was very much still in its infant stage:

The fact that IQ could have two men sent off, emping under 100 NSL, and still beat AS (remembering that IQ were the reigning league champs) highlights that players had still to fulfil their potential.

Week 2 also saw McGoo captaining his side at home.  7.5 NSL, 11 EMP with a LB tactic!  The lad was obviously very good indeed.

Oh, and what’s this?  Mr 18 3.75 £40,000 B. Berlinnin now a 19 8 FB, captaining his side to generate 12.36 EMP in a ZD formation.  A truly great player had began his ascent in style and it did not end here.

Mike from NW gives a good overview of the teams in the first division this week (week 2).  Take a look, and you can see that a good manager understands as much about other teams as he/she does their own squad.

Week 4 saw the cup starting, and an early peek of another future star.  WH Nartov (7.5) for IQ anyone?

The following week sees IQ emp 130 with 94 NSL on the pitch against GU (away from home, without a grudge).  Although this kind of emp may seem only decent these days, in season 2, this was pretty huge.  Players like Campbell, Figo, Freedom, Anderton, Chubenko and Oxley helped massively.  Not many of these players were traded to IQ – and this shows the importance of lady luck to building a team J.

The importance of stats are highlighted in week 7.  With only 88.75 NSL on the pitch, AA emped nearly 130.  Now they did use a boost, but Ed was a master at picking players that performed, and with the purchase of Miles Davis a couple weeks before, the Alcies were beginning to build a dynasty that has never really ended.

CA are also pretty good in the stats game, and with a mere 81.5 NSL on the pitch against the alcies, aided by a grudge, Catbel emped 130.5.  AA won because of their superior keeper, but for all managers that want to take a look at what can be achieved with the help of minimum NSL, this is a great match to research.

Week 9 and check out MR. 145 emp with the aid of a grudge.  Deane and Dalglish were a combination to fear in SAEFL in season 2, and a cobined 37 emp and 8 goals shows why teams with lesser abilities than AA didn’t like to come up against them.

Week 9 also saw another steal in the transfer market.  I give you FI I. Borgsen DS 5 19 131,000.  FI would get a nice bargain there J.

Equally interesting, Peter putting a freak up for sale?  CA

Bid  (402K) on 25yo MF NSL 10.5 name K. Francis.  Francis went on to prove that 402k was well spent on the midfield enforcer.  Can you imagine Peter sanctioning 400k for a 25 year old freak these days? (Peter : more like 4 mill J, I think that’s the only freak ever to be put on the transfer list)

Week 10 saw OC buy MF R. Keane (8.25, 22) for 295k from the market.  Keano played for OC for quite some time, and proved an inspired catch.

Avoiding grudges helps a side do well in SAEFL.  Some managers are better at doing it than others.  At this point in the lifespan of the league, Edwin was not.  Week 11 saw the umpteenth grudge against AA (7 in 11 weeks).  No wonder the club never win the title! (Peter: Hence the reason why teams with weaker EMP could win the league title, pity guys don’t take out the big boys anymore like they use to, was fun to watch the big guys fall each week in SAEFL)

In week 12, the kind of crazy deal that Peter might not be so keen to let through these days:

AS send AR

V. Ikpeba 22 S 7.75  + 35k

AR send AS

DS J. Seahorn is 18 yo and nsl 5

DM J. Stae is 18 yo and nsl 5

W B. Man is 20 yo and nsl 6.5

… and Don wonders why AR were in so much trouble when he took control of them?

Financial acumen is also important in SAEFL.  Week 12 saw plenty of fines for teams that didn’t correctly prepare their orders.  Week 13 saw Mike (tut tut J) playing a 65 NSL team, when the minimum NSL for division 1 teams was 70 NSL.  50k wasted (plus another 20k for order problems) - seems like small fry these days.

NH have a history of managing to pick excellent young talent, and week 13 saw Bojan Djordic (8.25, 22) sign for 325k.  He would go on to excel in SAEFL.  Who would have thought that the real life Bojan would go on to play for the mighty Plymouth Argyle!

Season 2 also saw the introduction of scouts, physios and coaches.  But in the days of season 2, assistants did not come for a fixed fee.  Oh no – they had to be bid for based on highest price offered. IQ were the early big spenders in this regard. (Peter: wow I forgot all about that Scouts use to be like players J - the early managers had It tough )

Rivalries in SAEFL are now well defined.  But even as early as the second season, bosses were beginning to fight tooth and nail against one another.  Take IQ’s boss (Nigel Gregory):

“Another hard fought win for the IQ boys last week against the clubs arch rival NW. Mike is a classy manager and top blkoke, but that dies not hide the fierce competitiveness between he and Nigel”

Week 15/16 and transfer market time –

PN -  MF C. Jones nsl 2.75 age 18 bid 20 000

NW - R. Giggs w age 18 nsl 5.5 bid 111,111

Two points to anyone that can tell me a) Jones top NSL or b) Gigg’s stats … all I’ll say is bargain.  I’d like to see more of these lower starting NSL players on the transfer market – especially at those prices! (Peter: don’t think you will see those prices again after what the player this week end for)

Class press from AA in week 15 as well … but I’m afraid I might get in trouble from Peter if I print it, ‘cause its XXX rated!!

Obviously season 2 also coincided with 1999 and a treble for Man U based on the press.  How times change ;)  (Peter the glory days J - no wonder I put a freak on the transfer list)

Week 16 and a MAMOTH game saw AA come up against IQ.  Grudge went against grudge; top player faced off against top player.  150 emp played 146 emp.  Even today that is GREAT going.  4-4 the final score (but the alcies should have won ;)).  It’s a shame that, despite being a great manager, Ed couldn’t read, as his week 17 press showed:

“After the 3 - 3 draw last week between SAEFL titans AA and IQ both managers were lyric”.

Things change in SAEFL.  Week 18 saw the cup ¼ stage played at neutral venues.  What was that all about Peter?  Still, AA won 18-0 so I’m not complaining. (Peter: I think I was running the games on a excel spreadsheet in those days J took about 40 min a games so I guess it was to cut down the number of games, its over 7 years ago so cannot really remember dam I was 24 then)

Hmm … week 19 press and Edwin again – Peter, would you like to read the press and deny (or otherwise) the allegations laid against you.  If you bleat on too much, we’ll know you are telling porkies. (Peter : No comment J)

Week 23, and Nigel seals the 2nd title in a row for IQ.  Great team, great stuff.

Week 24, and AR won the second division – which just goes to show that my memory is crap!

Interesting to see that AA had no less than 5 clubs grudge twice against the club in season 2.  That’s pretty awesome – and the club still finished 2nd, only just behind IQ.

Another great season in SAEFL.  Season 3 will see a shift in league power, and a new, pretty poor manager join the league with OC J

McGOO – THE BEST DEFENDER IN SAEFL?  YOU DECIDE

As an aside to a comment by Peter last week, he comments that DS McGoo was, for him, the greatest defender in the history of SAEFL.  Now everyone has their faves, but I would have to disagree with Peter for once and go for Simpson as the number one defender in SAEFL.

Three times the player of the season to McGoo’s zero (McGoo was defender of the year twice); 433 EMP (more than any other defender in the league, ever).  Class J

More on the best players in the history of SAEFL much later in the season.

Excelsior Warren

From the Excelsior Herald...

Excelsior for the cup?? Surely not. A team which has no cup pedigree of any sort seems to have taken to the new format of the cup.  In his press conference after the match a typically dour Bracegirdle said that he still regarded the cup as a trivial irrevalance and went on to say that his number 1 priority remained survival in the league. Mind you he was banging on about survival when the team reached the giddying heights of second place for a time last season. Not for the first time the faithful are left wondering how such a born pessimist can hope to motivate a squad of highly paid and morally suspect prima donnas.

F.C Inferno

Has anyone made any calculations so far on how many points will be needed to move to the next cup stage? Probably 6 points will be enough, but one team might secure 6 points and still don't qualify! So watch your GD, people! ;)

On the league, FI faces a NW team with the best EMP/NSL ratio on the league.

Mike should play CP, ZD or even MM, as I don't expect a WP-ONE battle. Once again, the answer to the game could be on the GK hands.

InterQuartile Rangers

An interesting game last week.  It all came together for us.  It was also a big contribution to our GD for the Cup.  There were many good performances.  Several of our players shooting 50% or more.  Wambach must of heard my comments from last week's press.  Wambach made 4 goals on 5 shots!  That's 80% a recent team record.  I think DS helped us along though.  They played WH an offensive tactic, but actually had more defensive EMP on the split.  The referee also stayed out of this game which I think was important.

The GD was nice, but not enough.  GU won big time last week.  So I'll have to rely on points to win the group.  If GU wins in a couple of weeks I'll finish second.  I'll need a tie or a win to finish first.  I'd like to make it to the next round to have something to show for the season.

As for the league, I haven't played enough games yet.  I play TH this week.  You can't tell it from the league table, but they are still a very strong team.  So we try a switchout and go defensive again.  It may offset his CP, hopefully.  I'd put my current odds of relegating at 50-50.  I'd say I had a good shot at staying Div 1, but I've already lost 2 games despite having higher EMP.  So it's very difficult for me to say.

Since it was a cup week there's no point doing the stats.

Adirondak Renegades

Adirondak Press (AP): Tough loss this week, against a Division 1 power.

Manager Fulmer (MF); Yes but we got what we wanted out of the match.

AP: Then you must be a very satisfied manager this season as AR has lost 4 of 5 matches.

MF: Yes, but….

AP: Let's see if we can find something positive to talk about. You used a very different line-up and formation this week.

MF: Instead of our usual attacking 3-6-1 we went with a more defensive 6-3-1. As I mentioned last week, we need to focus on being able to play tough defensive football when the situation calls. We were able to hold AA to 2 shots. Of course they were able to finish both, but that is more a comment on our GK situation than poor defense. Had we been able to stop 1 of 2 chances we would have tied.

AP: This close result was against less than AA top side.

MF: While I agree to a point, any line-up with Altercapio and Neethling is tough.

AP: You said you got what you wanted out of this match. I'm almost afraid to ask, but I must. How so?

MF: AS far as the cup goes, since we beat NW in the first round we will go through if we win our next match against Div 3 BS. If we win and AA wins, we both go through. If NW beats AA, 3 teams have 2 wins. However, we will advance based on goal differential over AA. That is why, although we lost to AA, it was important that it was a close match to put the goal differential in our favor.

AP: I suppose I can accept that logic. It makes more sense than some of your trades.

MF: Also, we were able to try defensive tactics and I was reasonably pleased. They will definitely be used again. DSs Yorke and Hulman played their first of many matches for AR. Yorke played very well and Hulman showed flashes of the promise we hoped for when we bought him from the transfer list last week. This week we moved to further strengthen our defense. We acquired FB T Barker, DM C Albers, and CB F Assassino through trades. They were brought in to play, not sit in a heated booth stuffing their face and making random meaningless comments like a reporter.

AP: So you are done trading now?

MF: Of course :)

MF: But if anyone is interested in discussing a trade, I can be reached at dfulmer1@neo.rr.com.

Well that was our second cup game that we did not really care about and we ended up almost winning again.  The game probably should not have even been close because TB had about 10 more NSL and almost 20 more EMP but they only won by 1 goal.  So overall, it was a pretty close game that we ended up losing but its okay because everyone already knows that we are focusing on the league.

So for the league game this week, that we are focusing on, we play ES.  They are right below us in the standings, with only one point less than us so it should be a pretty close game.  We have been emping a tad more than them but you never know what can happen.  The interesting game of the week will be between TJ and DL.  They are the two leaders in Division 2 so if one loses, it will move us closer to the top of the standings.  We can only hope for the best (a win) for our team because who knows what will happen with everyone else.

Stannington Historical

The Kiddie Corp of SH  took a pounding in last week's Cup match.

However SH Manager Lear was not upset by this result. "Our kiddies are playing to the best of their ability, thus gaining valuable experience for the long term. Spirits and morale on the SH squad remain high and shoudl continue to do so," stated Lear

In a moment of reflection this week, Lear told a couple of SH supporters,"I am definitely looking forward to aging this season. I must be out of my mind for saying this but with the vast reservoir of young talent on our squad just waiting to be released, it is going to take the aging process to carry this out."

The Jazz

The Toons faced Oaklake city in the second game of the cuplast week hoping for a win.

AS R Kirk one the man of the match with a great display. S Erik got himself booked for

a over the top tackle. The result would have been 0-0 if not a for last minute penatly

giving by the ref {he musted have been paid, ha ha}. Hopefully gaining a win will put us

through to the next round.

This weeks league game Is against DL at home, we hope another big crowd turn up at

The Toon City stadium to cheer us on, this is a top of the table clash with both teams

with a 100% record. This will be a hard bit fair game and S Archabald and B Gaza3rd

both playing this week after they rest last week, both will be excepted to score goals this week.

Next week is another big game against England U21 away from home. The scouts will be watching

EU this week to been back a plan to beat them next week.

DIVISION 3

Adelaide Kickers

Sign Of Things To Come?

The kickers last week managed a 6-6 draw with Druss Legends in the cup.  This result all but assures them of a place in the second round.  A draw or a win will see them through.  In the league though, this week will be a tough game at home against one of the stronger teams in Defrosted Tunafish.  DT last week in the cup scored 17 goals but also conceded 10 against Trav Spoodle.

What tactic will David use this week?  A win is important to go along with the cup success so far, however some of the players are starting to tire and need to be rested sooner or later.  David had this to say when asked.

"DT are a good team, and the fact they won their away game a couple of weeks ago shows they are not to be taken too lightly.  Having said that though the boys need some rest and gives us a chance to see what the others can do.  As the season is still only early and we are currently still on the same number of points as the last playoff spot, I think we can afford to rest some guys so that are fully fit for the last cup match against Englehart Storm in 2 weeks.  We need to be competitive in that game to make sure we make it through."

David appears to have maybe tipped his hand a bit at what the fans and opposition can expect but is he just foxing?  For that answer we will all just have to wait and see.  So all you Kickers get down to Kicker Field and cheer the boys on.

This week's question.

17yr old Amanda asks, "I think some of the guys are really cute and would like to write to them.  How do I do that?"

Amanda, all players and officials can be contacted by writing to the club itself.  All players will recieve the fan mail and most are happy to reply within a week or so.

Keep on Kicking.

Aros VSK

After another week with sick children manager Christer was finally able to do these orders while listening to the olympics.

AV travel to BS for a very important game in the battle for playoff. AV are looking for atleast one point. Rotation are starting to be more important now as season progress. Av feel secure in that department with a few trades done.

Last week AV won over MR in the cup. With that win AV are first in their group. The final round see AV play PN. It will be a tough match when Christer faces his old team.

Will DV remain unbeaten for another week? Fielding 77,75 NSl against SS might just put that on a test.

I expect to emp reach almost 110 emp with my ZD team. Hopefully that's enough for 1 or 2 smother shots

A win against SS would be fun. even if it was just to piss Brian off, with FU fielding 15 NSL more then DV and still not able to get ahead of "that bunch of grandpa's"

Falcons

With the cup out of reach the falcons can focus on the league. "Our ambition is to finish in the top 5" the coach was overheard to say.

Fanatics United

These comments are coming from the Top Defensive Team in Division 3...

Our line up today is very interesting, and we have P. Adorso-II back from the hospital. There is still a bit of negative atmosphere in the team but I don't think that it will effect the game, they are grown up enough to leave it off the field, I am a bit worried though.

This match is going to be an interesting one because reviewing the team and I have found that they have some talent, if the manager actually shows some interest in his team some good old TLC I it will be a good game. T. Janssen is a good player and the manager just needs to find the right spot for him. Good luck to you VA and lets have a good game.

Yes, Yes I am not running my best squad today, but rotation is needed. This will not be used as a excuse if we lose, every player in this team can pull his own, and if we lose it's because VA was better on the field on the day.

Last thought, go FE go FE go, go FE go FE go... ;-)
