DIVISION 1 GAMES

Alcohol Anonymous is, after 3 league matches, the proud leader of the table in division 1. Funny actually, after last years rebuilding season, I expected AA to go for a top position, and be one of the challengers for the title. However, instead of that, Nathan traded some of his top players (like star CMs Wictoria and Bremmner), and kept on rebuilding for the next season. And look where we find them? Leading the table. Well, Nathan might not be the nr. 1 candidate for the title, but at least he is leading, and apparently he is planning on continuing that for as long as possible, when you consider that he played a boost in his home match against Oaklake City. OC's start was not as good as AA's, but what can you expect from a new team in div 1. On the other hand: there start was not bad either, with 4 points they are in the big pack of mid-table teams. OC already has proven that they can be dangerous, because they can reach 130+ EMP without any problem. AA played an attacking WP, and when OC countered that with CP, we witnessed an attractive match, with lots of chances. Both AA and OC suffered from a red card around the same time, so that did not make much of a difference. AA was lucky that the right players gained from the boost that was played, and that gave AA just some EMP more than OC, leading to 31 chances for AA, against 30 for OC. Close you'd say, but the result wasn't this close by far, as the biggest difference in this game was made by the GK's. AA's GK was much better, both in NSL as in performance, and so AA beat OC 18-12. AA still the proud leader, with 12 points out of 4 matches, so without any loss of points. OC far behind, but the differences behind the top 4 or 5 teams are not that big, so Keith has absolutely no reason to worry.

In spite of last weeks draw against NW, Catbel Athletic has proven to be one of the stronger teams this season, and who knows where that might lead. Well, Ivo wants it to lead anywhere at all, he has to make sure that those draws (although last weeks result was very fair), don't happen too often. That is easier said than done of course, as this weeks opponent is Apocalypse, and we all know that Martin has made AP one of the most difficult opponents in the league. We have over 1,5 season's matches to prove that. Just look at the AP lineup: Martin was able to field a 99 NSL team, with a NSL 10 GK. With his strong WP, he would bring many teams in trouble I guess. However, this week appears not to be his lucky week, as CA even put 99.25 NSL against that, with a tactical OFF to dismantle AP's attack. That did the trick, and when CA eventually managed to get 13 EMP more, that resulted in 23 chances for CA, against 11 for AP. Since both teams scoring percentage was in the same range, the result after 90 minutes of football was 9-4. CA manage to stay just behind AA, and AP stays in that big pack of mid-table teams, just like OC.

FC Inferno is once again off to a good start, winning 2 of their first 3 matches. Marco has been able to get the right players on the right positions in his ONE team, and with that he is able to put a strong performance on the pitch week after week. Speaking of strong performances: NW had a somewhat unlucky start, losing their first 2 matches, but last weeks performance against CA was very hopeful. I don't think that NoShaKi WC 98 in that form can be beaten at home, unless you play a GC, and they suffer form a red card. Or unless you play WP of course, cause we all know that ZD can be a very powerful, yet vulnerable tactics. Nonetheless, looking at the difference in power for NW, you might think that Mike should play ZD as much as possible. Mike however, thought different. This week, he plays WP again, and that turned out not to be enough to trouble Marco's ONE. Sure, NW was unlucky to see a red card, but even if they would have ended the match with 11 players, FI would still have been better, and would have won this game. Of course, I can understand Mike a little. When you play WP, you go for either a win or a loss, while with ZD, you may play a very good match, but still end up with a draw. However, this season, the div 1 teams are very strong, and this WP team for NW will not hurt many teams, I'm afraid. FI stay in the race for the top positions, close behind AA and CA, while NW remains in the relegation zone. That is a sight we are not used to. But I guess there won't be many managers that will think that NW will really be in trouble at the end of this season, as Mike is famous for his brilliant moves to get where he wants to be, and this season will probably be no exception.

Both Tottenford Heats, last years Champion, and InterQuartile Rangers, the promovendus, have collected 3 points out of their first 3 matches. In this weeks clash against each other, a victory would mean not only that their points would be doubled, no, the winning team would be able to still be in the race for a top position, while losing this match would force the manager to look down, instead of up. Mark was aware of that, and considered it important enough to play a grudge. That was probably a wise decision, because when you look at the fact that both Mark and Terry played a defensive ZD, they had to do something if they did not want to let this match end 0-0. Because of the boost, TH had 93.25 on the pitch, against 91 for IQ. But the EMP proves that TH is specialized in ZD, where for IQ, it is just an opportunity tactics. Even the red card did not harm TH, as they still had enough EMP surplus for 2 shots. Including the penalty given, that meant 3 chances for TH, of which 2 were scored: 2-0. TH make a jump on the table, while IQ stays In that big Mid-table pack. However, since more and more teams are escaping from that pack, Terry has to make sure that he wins his points now and then.

With 4 points out of the first 3 matches, both Lisbon United and Jazz Greats have managed to be just in the top half of the table, and that implicates the importance of this game: a win would mean that they would be in the top, behind teams like AA, CA and FI, while a defeat would mean that they have to be careful, because these are the weeks in which the situation in div 1 filters out, and the top teams are slowly but surely separated from the trouble teams. And of course nobody wants to be manager of a trouble team, that will most likely go for Nuno and Bart as well. However, Nuno was the only manager of the 2 that actually DID something about that, as he played a GC. That was not a bad idea, as Bart has a strong WP team with JG, he put up 97 NSL, against "only" 94.50 NSL for LU. But the GC work right in that way, as LU still managed to get more EMP: almost 2.50 more, which wasn't that much, but it was enough to create 2 more chances: 35 for LU against 33 for JG. However, with almost 70 chances, almost equally divided, and with 2 NSL 10 GK's, the outcome of a game is still a matter of luck. And in this case, Bart turned out to be the luckiest (Was this the lucky lipstick-charm you were talking about, Bart?). JG beats LU 14-11, and stays in the slipstream of AA, CA and FI, while LU stays with 4 points out of 4. However, this might have very well been the other way around. But it wasn't.

With only 1 point out of the first 3 matches, The Boelewieten are where they have been almost the entire previous season: in the danger zone, while Excelsior Warren were they were most of the previous season as well: going for one of the top positions, with 6 points out of the first 3 matches. Jeroen figured that it was now or never, and played a boost along a strong CP side, hoping things could be turned around. And indeed, that was way too powerful for EW. I don't know if it was just the CP from TB, but we have seen the LB from EW more powerful than this before. Sure, both teams saw a player leave the pitch early, because of a red card, and the EW player left somewhat earlier, so that explains a little of the difference, but since the difference was more than 26 EMP, it can never be an excuse. That 26 EMP difference made TB much better: they created 20 chances, while giving away not a single chance! They didn't even have to be sharp, missing more than have the chances, and still win big: 9-0. That brings TB on the good side of the line, although Jeroen still has to be careful as it's still very close, while EW remain in the top half of the table, although AA, the leader, has twice as many points.
