DIVISION 3 GAMES

Defrosted Tunafish is the only team so far that has been able to stay in the slipstream of the top 3 teams. If they want to stay there, or even benefit from a mistake of one of those top 3 teams, they have to make sure that they win matches against the teams in the bottom half of the table. Adelaide Kickers is one of those teams in the bottom half of the table. But of course, if AK wants one thing, it is getting in the top half of the table as soon as they can. And the soonest way to get there, is win the next match, which in this case of course is this match against DT. So, both David and Claudio played attacking, WH against WP, and both teams fielded between 80 and 85 NSL, not much difference there. However, looking at EMP, the difference between these two teams was a lot bigger, it was a 14.50 EMP surplus in DT's favour. That of course resulted in a lot more chances (33 for DT against 20 for AK). The most important difference however, was of course the difference in GK. David fielded a NSL 7 GK, against a NSL 10 GK for Claudio. That made the victory for DT very easy: 22-4. DT did what they have to do this week, so now they can sit back, relax, and wait what the top 3 teams have done. AK will win their points in other matches. And of course, their chances are better if they field a better GK.

Both the Falcons and the Smoking Guns collected 3 points out of their first 3 matches, so when they met each other in their first match, it was clear that the winner of this match would hang on in the race for a nice top position, where the team that got defeated would be left behind. Both Nick and Iman played ONE, and fielded around the same NSL. However, the fact that FA saw 2 players leave the pitch early after a red card was shown, and still performed 1 EMP better, proves that FA has a better ONE team by far! Just have look, SG played ONE with only 1 AM, with no MF, no WH, no AS.....they better had played BC with these players, just to name something. Anyway, the SG players kept their nerves, and ended the match with the same 11 players, and that is worth something as well of course. In fact, it made both teams equally strong. FA had only 1 chance more, 9 against 8 for SG, and after the red card for FA goalie Dunkin, both teams had a NSL 8.25 GK on goal. With these ingredients, a draw would have been fair. But in SAEFL, the outcomes aren't always fair, and in this case, FA was the luckiest: 6-4. Well, if FA would have ended the game with 11 players, the would probably have won this too.

Clive did not have the start he wanted with Fantastic Eleven, with only 2 points out of 3 matches. 2 out of 3 leaves you in the bottom half, in spite of the fact that actually you didn't do it all that bad, losing only one of the first 3 games. But that's because it's the victories that count, not the matches you don't lose. The best remedy to do something about that, of course, is winning. This week, that would be a very tough job, as this weeks opponent is Trav Spoodle, who are doing great, as Travis won all his first 3 matches. Both Clive and Travis almost put up the same NSL, and played WP, but the EMP wasn't the same at all (although it was not very big difference), and that was all because Travis's WP players are soooo good!! (Man, look at that CF Vedder, I bet he makes every SAEFL manager that plays WP drool!). However, TS may have a very good WP team, having a decent GK is at least just as important, and this match is the perfect example of that! TS created 37 chances, against 35 for FE, but since FE played with a NSL 10 GK, and TS only with a NSL 9 GK, it was no surprise that FE won this game: 16-14. TS lose their first points, and are overtaken by Claudio's DT, while FE are at a nicer midtable position, after their first win. (There's one more thing: I happen to know that Travis was planning on scouting for a better GK this week, but his mom made him look for her shoes and lipstick, so he had to postpone that)

Otto traded away a lot of good Deo Volente players in the first week of the season, telling us all that he is rebuilding and aiming at the next season. However, for some reason he just keeps winning and winning, even without those good players. This weeks victim is Magnus. Magnus won't be happy, as the Speedsters are still waiting to win their first points this season, and under normal conditions a team that is rebuilding would be an excellent target. However, Deo Volente does not apply to normal conditions. In spite of playing with only 77.75 NSL, the DV team is very much in balance, with the right players with the right stats on the right positions, and that is what brings you the EMP you need. In fact, DV was better than SS, although it was not enough for a smothershot. No, DV's defense may have been good enough to stop SS's attacking ONE, it was not enough to create any chances for themselves, and this match might have very well ended in 0-0, which would have been a fair result. It was only for a penalty that this match eventually did have a winner, and that winner was DV. Otto will be happy, as this DV will get a lot better after midseason aging, so if they can't already be stopped now, who will stop them then? Magnus was unlucky today, but he was very close to winning his first point, and that against a top 3 team, so SS will get there in time, don't worry.

Blue Storm and Aros VSK are 2 mid-table teams at 4 and 3 points after 3 matches, and so we have another clash of two teams, of which the winner will hang on for a top position, while the other team will fall back. In this case, it was obvious that the victory would go to AV. Not only did Christer put 15 NSL more on the pitch than Berto, he also did not forget to pick a captain (which costs you a lot of EMP, really!). I have to admit that the BS players are better EMPing players, this really comes into sight, but under these circumstances it only made the big difference a little less big, but it was not enough steal a point. Out of 34 chances for AV, against 28 for BS, an almost equal ration was saved by the 2 GK's (both NSL 9, so no difference there), and that led to a fair 17-12 victory for AV. AV stay in the top half of the table, but now a little more solid, while BS drops a few places.

Wouter is the second manager in div 3 that is still waiting to win his first points, with Vitesse Arnhem. Of course he would want nothing else than making a change today, but he knew that would be a rather difficult challenge, as todays opponent is noone else than Brian, with his Fanatics United. For the record: FU was one of the 3 teams that hasn't lost a point yet. We have already seen the other 2 teams that were leading the table up to now, and we saw DV win their game and TS lose their game. So, what would Brian do? If FU wins, it would be one down, 1 to go (That would be Otto of course), and another nice gravestone in the backyard. Wouter played the usual WP, and Brian countered that with the usual CP. The difference in NSL wasn't very big, although the difference there was, was in FU's favour, but the EMP difference was bigger: a surplus of 8 in FU's favour. And since FU also had a better GK (10 against 9.5), it is clear why FU is a candidate for the title, and VA not. With this 21-12 victory, FU joins DV with an unbeaten status, where TS could not continue that. So, the question for the following weeks will be: who will lose points first, DV or FU? We'll see that soon enough I guess! And for Wouter, oh well, if the real Vitesse Arnhem manages to beat PSV on Friday, he will most likely not think about this match anymore. You know what? I like Wouter, so just for him, I hope Vitesse does win!
