A HISTORY OF SAEFL & AA (Season 3) – GOOD MANAGERS SUCCEED, AND OC MANAGER FAILS, IN SEASON OF UPS AND DOWNS

With season 2 seeing IQ again victorious, and AR winning the first ever division 2 title, season 3 would see battles galore and a changing of the guard.  Let’s take a look …

Season 3

Season 3 got off to a thrilling start with CA playing newly promoted PN.  And PN saw what they were up against – they got an 8-0 pasting away from home, with 8.5 20 Berlinnin captaining his side to a easy win.  IQ did not start so well however – a draw against HD perhaps giving second thoughts to the management about some trading in the weeks to come. OC got soundly beaten by NH, while NW took it to TH.  AA snuck past AR and MR drew 0-0 with GU (McGoo now an 8.75 player emping very well – but his best was yet to come J)

Season 3 was the term when trading really began to kick into gear, and week 1 saw several interesting deals, including AP trading DS a young WH called B. Star.  Would the Apocs live to regret this deal?

Week 2 saw another defeat for IQ at the hands of auld enemies CA. Surprisingly, not a grudge card in sight (must have been saving them up for AA J).  Mind you, the alcies were also looking weak – sneaking a draw against NH with albeit a good EMP to NSL ratio.  A changing of the guards, maybe?

Division 2 saw JG play LU (Peter : Look where they are today).  NSL played – 74.75 and 73.5.  Although the game ended 0-0 (JG LU games are traditionally tight), me thinks the performance levels of these two great names has risen since this point.  Out of interest, JG played a young CF called S. Rowbottom (6.5 NSL).  We shall be keeping an eye on this young lad over the next few weeks.

Week 3 sees the cup.  EU get hammered by CA 13-3. But who is this I see in England’s side?  None other than CB Danny Mills (6 NSL at this point).  He would make SAEFL history – but more about him down the line.

Week 4 and AR start to utilise their old tricks of managing to mess up games!  Had the manager at the time played a decent captain, they would have probably got a draw out of the game with Oaklake.  As it was, they lost by 2-1 with a EMP difference of 12, with no captain selected.  Dear oh dear.

MR were a feared team at this point in SAEFL.  Take a look at their EMP to NSL ratio in week 4 - and this is with 2 sending offs.  No wonder NW were left scratching their heads.  In division 2, GOONIE again blitzed it up with 23.45 EMP and a hattrick against EU.  Nice work fella!

Finally, week 4 also shows that teams do make mistakes on styles and players.  As we all should know, wingers are not allowed with a AD style.  No one obviously told TB and W. Claessens this … but the Booeys still won.

Using your grudge cards at the correct time can be the difference between success and failure for teams.  In OC's case, success meant staying in the top flight in season 3.  Their manager at the time used a GC to defeat MR in the cup.  Now this might have seemed like a good move at the time.  But realistically, the Oakies were never going to win the cup; and that GC could have been used to greater effect in getting 3 points for the club.  In the end, the club would be relegated by a small number of points …

The grudge card could have been used in the next game.  They lost 9-8 to CA.  The grudge here would have probably netted them the game.  On such fine lines are managerial decisions made.

Week 7, and the good use of a tactic combined with a grudge, and marking to back it up.  MR v AA, and Ed (wouldn't it be nice to see him back in SAEFL :)) guessed correctly that Melchester would go all out with a WP tactic to try and rip the alcies to pieces.

Ed therefore countered with a very nice OFF together with a grudge card of his own.  Result = only one winner (although MR's keeper didn't help - in these games, ALWAYS play your best keeper, as an 8 NSL lad just won't do the bizz).

Check out the marking as well - Ed really hurt Dalglish and Deane with the close attention paid by Basto and Newton.

Like OC, AR looked to take it all out in the cup in season 3.  And again, their league form suffered (week 8).  Remember that if you expect to finish in the middle of the pack in any given season, it might be worth going on a cup run.  But if it makes the difference between promotion or not / relegation or not, then I know where my priorities are …

Week 9 - and how did AR pull off a draw v CA.  Questions on a postcard, anyone?  Ourgunned by 30 EMP (albeit both played defensively), and Catbel didn't get a shot on target.

Inconsistency can really hurt teams, and in OC's case we are talking REALLY inconsistent.  They move from NMRing in week 9, to drawing with IQ in week 10.  That kind of thing makes "homer mad, homer smash!"

Not to say that Peter never has technical glitches in SAEFL, but this game makes interesting reading:

Hmm ………………………….  (Peter : This game was one of the reasons the Smoother rule came into play, NW had everything in Def and AA got no normal shots)

Week 11:

MR Bids 751 000k for S age 25 nsl 11.25 named C.Sutton (Peter : Ok I lied so I did put another freak on the transfer list)

IQ bid $285,000 for the 19yo CM nsl=7, to be named P.Gasgoigne

Looks like Peter has put more than one freak on the transfer market since records began. (Peter : Ok so I lied so I did put another freak on the transfer list)

A nice deal for MR, and just as good a deal for IQ if memory serves me well.

In week 12, AA demonstrate the importance of playing more than one tactic.  Able to play WP and ONE for starters, most clubs would not think that they could play a defensive tactic quite as well.  Does 141 EMP seem OK to you?  The ability to switch between defensive and offensive tactics makes it that much more difficult for an opposition manager to read what you are going to do - and therefore gives you that extra chance of winning that can be the difference between a good season and an average one.

Week 13, and the Division 1 v Division 2 game.  Good stuff as Div 1 beats Div 2.  Perhaps the Commy can look at this kind of game again (although difficult with 3 divisions!) (Peter : Wonder when I stoped the all star games – I’ll try and start them again)

Week 13 also saw CA splash out 700k on a 9 19 AM called Todi.  Good pick :)

Ageing tracker … ageing tracker …

Week 14 sees ageing in SAEFL.  What would it bring to the various players in SAEFL?  Let's take a look at some of the legends: (Peter : What season what Midseason aging introduced into SAEFL ?)

CF G. Schockaert 11 (TB)

AM Hoddle 9.25 (IQ)

DS I. Borgsen 10 (FI)

WH Djordic 10.5 (AA)

DS McGoo 10 (GU - and the legend is really born)

CF Dalglish 11.5 (MR)

CB Danny Mills 8 (EU)

CM J. Cole 10 (EU)

CF GOONIE 12.25 (TJ-  dropping)

GK THE CAT IN THE HAT 10 (TJ)

FB B. Berlinnin 9 (CA)

CF J. Rowbottom 7.5 (JG)

Even the best managers make mistake, and when we get to week 18, we see the IQ and the AA bosses both forgetting to pick captains. While IQ had plenty in the bank to beat AR, AA got punished by losing to MR by a single goal.  Even worse – AA used a grudge to try and get the win.  The defeat would cost the club dear.

The following week would see CA edge out AA by a goal to nil in a MASSIVE game.  CA emped 154 points to 140 from AA.  The win pretty much sealed the title for the home side.

In division two, TB and FI were ripping it up, and in the same week that saw the top 2 in SAEFL going head to head, FI shocked TB by a single goal to open up the championship race.

Week 20 and a fan fare (or perhaps more realistically a slight breeze) saw a certain Nathan Fossey enter SAEFL for the first time.  He had played with a Mr Babcock in L&AEFL a couple years before, and, while still at university (crumbs, that feels a long time), he took on the seemingly impossible job of keeping OC in the top flight.

Somehow, I immediately picked up the tactics and correctly picked that Mike would play WP with NW.  Got a draw … but hardly likely to make a dent in the battle against the drop.

Week 21 sees NF down to earth – IQ beat OC 10-7, with Screwdriver looking a shadow of his former self.  By this time, I had already decided that, unless significant trading took place, that an ageing OC squad would get even older and perpetually decline.

In the big game of the week, CA plays MR and wins 7-3.  TB sneak a win whilst FI slipped up to EU in the 2nd division.

Week 22 sees CA slip up (a mere draw!) to give AA a snip of a chance at the title – but they then only get a draw as well.  OC wins (yay!) with a pathetic EMP total to make their points total look half reasonable.

Week 23 and OC draw level on the sides above them with another draw.  Goodness only knows how I managed that! (the bribes worked Peter – I’ll keep them coming for this season).

More importantly, CA win the title (a great manager in Vince got his just deserts) with a confident win against TH.

In another top match, IQ play AA with everyone expecting IQ to rest.  AA win but IQ don’t rest anyone.  IQ’s press showed the rivalry between the two bosses at this time:

“This week IQ get an opportunity to end AA's title asperations, and the perenial bridesmaids (AA) will be hoping to put one over the club that has pipped it for the championship in the first two seasons of SAEFL. It would be ironic if IQ were to end AA's hopes of claiming the Season 3 championship, even though IQ itself is out of the running.”

Week 24 sees CA forgetting to pick a captain and losing (Vince must have been drunk – no shock there ;)).    OC get relegated by being taken to the cleaners by AA.

As this is (to date – touch wood) the only time I have been relegated in my time as a SAEFL manager, to get pushed through the trap door by AA is (now I look back at it), somewhat ironic.

With NW sneaking the cup, and TB and FI safely up, concentration fell on the play-offs.  In the end, TJ snuck up with JG getting hammered in the first round (never mind, eh Bart ;)). (Peter : This just shows what Managers can do with a team)

All in all, a great season that saw SAEFL move to new heights – although there were still too many missed captains, too many formation errors.  This has improved such a lot since, and shows the importance of experience in the league.

And one final note – Marco Cecilio made manager of the season.  Then with TB, now with FI.  Still a great boss J (now can you let me have that 12.5 20 5 5 FB for a lower price Marco?)

Next week, and its sad departures and new arrivals as the nearly men become THE men of SAEFL.

Excelsior Warren

From the Excelsior Herald...

A horrible defeat at the hands of The Boelewieten last week truly exposed the shortcomings of Excelsior's squad and tactical knowhow. The alarm bells must now be ringing at Monument Park. Already this season looks like being the usual blend of long and hard. It surely is time for the club to put far more effort into developing their young talent. The conveyor belt of quality young players like Sebastian or Manchester, seems to have had a few spanners thrown in the works. This has to be down to the people running the club. Excelsior cannot compete in the transfer market as the league is full of clubs with seemingly bottomless pockets. Last week saw 666k being spent on a modest 18 year old. What chance that the Warren bankers would fund that sort of spending? Bracegirdle has shown that he has a knack for managerial survival, but if things go wrong this season, surely even his ducking and weaving will not help him. (Peter : After what you have done with EW I think they will give you as many chances as Fergie J)

F.C Inferno

It's quite interesting to see people interest on good AS! Half the league mailed me! ;) Peter, how many players do we have on each position in the league? Can you say that? (Peter : Not as that would change the price of certain players J)

Commenting our adversary this week, I think OC is a very strong team and playing away will only make things worse. However, I expect a very even game... Maybe we can get another win!

InterQuartile Rangers

Does anyone want to try and tell me again that there's not too much money in SAEFL????  Look at this:  TH Bid 666K for 18yo DM NSL 3.75 Named : B. Korenwolf. (Peter: I has other crazy bid of 600,585, 550 and 501)  I had to give up a NSL 9 CF to get only 334K more than that.  Considering the value of the bid he should have been named Beelzebub, El Diablo, or Lucifer.  This is another reason I shouldn't be in Div 1.  I can barely afford 666K for an NSL 8 player.

I've been looking down since before the season started!  From my perspective, Mark wasted his boost.  I don't have a good enough team to do well in Div 1.  I'm already fighting relegation.  I have no illusions.  So most of the teams that Mark are fighting with will get their 3 points when they play me, and they won't need a boost.  So my contribution is drawing a boost so he can't use it against his real competition.  If anyone wants to make a contribution to my bank account for helping out, I'm listening....

Unfortunately, this is beginning to remind me of my first season in SAEFL.  Relative to the other teams in my division I had a very weak team.  My only contribution to the league table was upsetting a couple of teams.  I previously said my odds of relegating were 50-50.  I've already revised that to 30 against relegating.  I only put the odds that high because mid-season aging is still pending.

Anyway, another strong team this week, despite their standing in the table.  So we experiment again.  I don't have the best players for BC, but it's worth a try.  I certainly don't see ONE working well against CP.

Adirondak Renegades

Adirondak Press (AP): Another tough loss this week, this time 1-0 to title contender EU. Last week, after a 1 goal loss to AA in a cup match, you were satisfied and said "we got what we wanted out of the match". Are you satisfied with this week's performance against a clearly superior side?

Manager Fulmer (MF): No.

AP:  You lost 1-0 in an exciting match, a much better result than expected.

MF: So.

AP: What is the difference between the 2 close matches 2 excellent teams?

MF: We need points in the league. We got none.

AP: Not too talkative today, huh.

MF: .........

AP: OK. So let's talk about the match. You used a new defensive tactic, Man to Man marking, and it was very effective. Statto was excellent in goal saving 6 of 7 chances, fantastic for a back-up GK. Fantastic for a #1 GK for that matter.

MF: He was OK. I'm sure David at AK hopes he plays like that.

AP: Why would David care how Statto plays, AK is in Div 3. Wait a minute, did you trade Statto after a performance like that????

MF: Maybe

AP: Don't tell me.

MF: OK, I won't.

AP: And since you have been focusing on defense so much lately, you probably also included a defender.

MF: Maybe.

AP: DON!!!

MF: OK, I included CB J Davids.

AP: I'm confused.

MF: You are not alone :)

AP: I'm afraid to ask why you traded them.

MF: OK, so don't.

MF: Its not often you get a chance to pick up a young talent like CM H VanderWestvizen. He can provide rotation for MF Pulmao now, and will play an important role when we play more defensive tactics. And at only 23, he has a great future ahead of him.

AP: I have heard that Vanwhatshisname has good skills and has very good ethics and determination and should fill an important role, but I hear you also picked up another promising young striker.

MF: Yes, we have received some excellent reports on 21 year old striker D Astokachi.

AP: That gives you 4 very promising strikers from age 19-21. You usually only play with one striker at a time. Why do you need all of these promising attacking players?

MF: So I have some players to trade???

SH is experiementing with their roster. Manager Lear feels that they having nothing to lose by doing this. "We have a number of different tactics and lineup combos that we can go with using our Kiddie Corp. So, we feel now is the right time to do it."

Also, SH is not worried about our win/loss record because when the aging comes along we are rather confident it is going to help us and SH will be a different club in the 2nd half of the season."

Len Lear is glad a former club of his is off to a good start this season, Englehart Storm. Lear said,"Peter has been through a lot with ES. But he seems to be using a nice, patient approach to things and it seems to be paying off for him. Go, ES, Nice work, Peter G. Blue Strom FC underwent a welcomed hostile take over this week. The new Manager of the team, Bryan Banfield, has brought with him his experience from years of sending teams to the First Division. S. Guerrero, the teams captain spoke with us this we and had the following to say:"We are very excited about what the future has in store for us, Bryan is a great manager and we look forward to great things." All that is left now if to see what Blue Storm's performance is this weekend when they meet Deo Volente in an away game.

Blue Strom FC was taken over by Wayne Ent. Danielle Cook, Wayne Ent's PR officer say that they have high hopes for the new team and are looking to run a survey to see that the local supporter feel about changing the teams name to "Wayne United". Reporter: Do you like to result that you got last week?

Manager: It was a good game, I was proud of the shots at goal, there could have been more.

Reporter: As the league leader, do you think you will out run the Speedsters?

Manager: No, I think that Magnus has some good players on his side and has a solid strategy, and it might pay off for them today.

Reporter: I hear that you hit your head last week, what happened?

Manager: No it was the roof, when heard the result on the FE vs. TS game.

Reporter: Any more injuries, "bites", ect...

Manager: No, the team has come to be a real family, and everyone is learning from strengths and weakness. I have some more players that are coming in this week, I am hoping it will be a smooth transition.

Just some advice to AK, take out Vedder's knees before the game.

And I would like to invite everyone and their mothers to come watch in my new improved stadium in week 10, I guarantee a excellent game.

Fantastic eleven

The first win of the season for FE and what a win. Against one of the top teams in SAEFL. Hopefully the first of many more to come. My team is still young so we will have to see next season how they will perform. Will get back to Brain later and his little RIP. As I will be starting my own collection soon.
