DIVISION 1 GAMES

InterQuartile Rangers and The Boelewieten are 2 teams in the lower half of the table, with IQ even in the danger zone, and TB with 1 point more just above that. Of course, the season is still young, so it is too soon to jump to conclusions, but in a match where these 2 teams meet, a victory can make a difference, especially since we are getting at that point of the season where the positions start to sort out. Terry however chose this match to his powerful midfielders, either because they really were in need of rest, or because he could be going for a nice cup result next week. That left him with a starting team of “only” 92.25 NSL. On the other side, Jeroen played his strongest ZD team, with 98 NSL, and since IQ played BC, which is no ZD countering tactics, that ZD by TB was way too powerful for IQ. No less than 140 EMP was reached, which was 24 EMP more than IQ, and that of course led to the victory for TB, although it was narrow: 0-1. With the second consecutive win, TB make a nice jump on the league table, while IQ remain in the relegation zone. But there are still 17 league matches to be played.

In a pre-cup week, it is always interesting to watch which teams are saving themselves for the cup match, and which teams don’t. Mark has a reputation of resting his team before a cup match, when he really wants to go for it, and looking at what he sent on the pitch this week, I bet he has intentions to win the match against CA next week. With only 82 NSL, he tried to reduce the damage by playing OFF (obviously expecting Martin to play WP with AP, and he was right to expect that). Well, OFF sure can be a good antitactics for WP once in a while, but that can only be when you play a strong enough team. In this case, with 82 NSL for TH against 99 for AP, it wasn’t about tactics at all, as any tactics would have beaten TH. In this case, it resulted in a 11-6 victory for AP, so both teams have 6 points now, and a stable midtable position. SAEFL SEASON 10 WEEK 7

Oaklake City has been somewhat unlucky in the first matches, leading to a position just above the danger zone. Of course Keith wants to turn things around, to make OC’s stay back in div 1 a little safer, and of course the best occasion to turn things around always is the first next match. In this case however, that first match is a tough one. It’s against FC Inferno, who turn out to be a top team this season once again, already in the top 3 and that is not for no reason. Once again, Marco plays with 96.50 NSL, leading to 130+ EMP, and that in an away game. However, it is not just skill that can be decisive. OC might have been just as good as FI in this match, but OC was by far the unlucky team of the two, suffering from 2 red cards. With 9 players left and more than half an hour to go, OC just was not capable of standing up against the FI attack, and that resulted in a 0-3 defeat. FI remain in the top 3, with 12 points already, while OC are in the danger zone now, with 4 points.

Alcohol Anonymous are the proud leaders of the table, not just unbeaten, but without even losing a point. This weeks match is against Jazz Greats, the team that spent the last season rebuilding, after winning the title, to go for a prize again this season. So, that of course promised to be an interesting and prestigious match. Bart did not trust just on home advantage, and even played a boost to help JG win the victory. However, not all promises are lived up to, and that is what Nathan did this week. He only put up 82.75 NSL for AA, and with that he already threw in the towel before the first whistle had blown. The 31-17 win for JG was of course very much deserved, not question about that. In spite of OC in the previous match, JG could even afford to see 2 players being sent off, and still be better. AA lose their leading position in div 1 with this defeat. Both teams with 12 points, FI have already passed them on goal difference, and if CA would manage to win their game, they would even be 1 point ahead on both teams. And right behind that, with 10 points, is JG, in 4th position. Still with a good perspective for a good league position too. Will JG go for the league or the cup this season? Well, we’ll probably know more after next weeks cup results.

After AA’s defeat this week, Catbel Athletic could take over the lead in div 1 by beating Excelsior Warren. However, that is not something you just do, as EW already proved to be a top team last season, and and this season they are once again in the top half, only 1 victory away from the top 3 teams. And when you play against EW, you never know if Simon will play LB or defense, so for Ivo it was an easy decision, chosing between ZD and CP. But it was not that CP that made the difference. It was the impressive 101.75 NSL leading to almost 140 EMP in an away game without playing a boost or grudge, that did it! EW could have played either ENF or LB, I don’t think it would have been enough for a win. CA take the lead, while EW fall back to a midtable position.

For the past few season these teams have been in the top 5 and after 4 league games both these team are in the bottom 4, i'm not sure when last any of these 2 teams where that far down the table, SO this game was very important to both managers. NW is one of the teams that has never been out of the top flight but as things stand right now they will be playing there football next season in Div2, Mike gave it a good shot and they were the strong of the 2 teams on the day, but LU GK was up to the task and kept LU in the game - the end result a draw it really does not help either team.
