DIVISION 1 GAMES

After the surprising elimination of Alcohol Anonymous, Nathan has only one prize left to go for this season, and that is the league. Of course, already at the beginning of the season, we could see Nathan sell some important top players, indicating that AA will use this season to rebuild, as this season would come too soon to go for prizes. However, in spite of that, after last weeks disappointments, it is too early to give up on everything, especially when your league table position is as good as it is for AA right now. This weeks opponent was difficult, as with Apocalypse we have a team that wins a lot of matches, and that resulted in a top position in the last season. Martin had a quite different cup experience, as with 9 points out of 3 matches, he showed that AP could be a serious cup fighter this season. Did that mean that he had to rest players in the league this match? No way, as beside all these strategic reasons, this clash is also prestigious because it is the clash between Nathan and Martin, and they both of course don’t want to lose this one. So, both managers played a strong team, AP even 99 NSL. The difference in EMP wasn’t that big, although it was in AP’s favour. With a NSL 10 GK for AP, and “only” a NSL 9.75 GK for AA, you’d expect a victory for AP. But with differences this small, anything can happen, and so it did in this match. AA eventually was a little bit more lucky, and that resulted in a 15-13 victory. Lucky I said, and that is what Nathan was, as this match might very well have ended the other way around. Anyway, another 3 points for AA, who strengthen their top 3 position, and in fact, if both CA and FI would not win this week, AA could take the lead again in div 1.

But already in the next match, we see that AA won’t be leading the table this week, as Catbel Athletic wins their home game against Jazz Greats. Already last week, we saw Ivo choose for the league instead of the cup, which led to the early elimination of CA. On the other hand, Bart went for a good cup result with JG, in which he succeeded, but it apparently also meant that in this week, some of his top players were in need of rest. Where CA played with a B-side last week, JG did it this week. That made that the difference between these 2 teams was huge this week: almost 140 EMP for CA against less than 105 for JG, so the victory for CA (which eventually turned out to be 5-0) was no surprise at all. CA still leading the table, while in spite of this loss, JG will most likely remain on the 4th spot (on goal difference), although the gap with the top 3 teams of course increases.

The match between FC Inferno and InterQuartile Rangers, means a clash between the nr. 2 at the top against the nr. 2 against the bottom. Both Marco and Terry in need of points therefore, although both for a different reason. Terry already proved a number of times this season, that IQ is a good team, and that IQ can reach a lot of EMP in matches. So, IQ should be strong enough to stay in div 1 this season, but in order to do that IQ needs to win points, and they have been a little unlucky there so far. For FI, I don’t think that there is any doubt whether they are to stay in div 1. No, FI has one of the strongest teams, with a very capable manager, and the question for FI this season will be: will they go for the league or for the cup? In the cup, we could see last week that FI won their group, while in the league they are very strong too, with a runner up position. I don’t think that any team will be strong enough this season to go for both prizes, so eventually Marco will have to choose what he wants to go for. However, unlike Ivo and CA, Marco still has all options open, and is still in the race for both, as he also manages to win this week. Both FI and IQ fielded an almost equally strong team in NSL, but in EMP, the difference was a little bigger in FI’s favour. FI also had the better GK, so the victory for FI was fair. And so, FI remain in the race for the lead in div 1, while they also are in the second round of the cup. For Terry, it’s the same old song again: nice performance, once again, but once again no points.

The match between Tottenford Heats and Oaklake City meant a clash between 2 teams that won their group in the first stage of the cup last week. However, since both teams are in the bottom half of the table, winning matches in the league is important too for Mark and Keith. That is why it wasn’t very surprising that both Mark and Keith played a strong team this week, instead of resting players after the cup match. Keith even decided this game to be important enough to play a grudge (you never know, it might in the end turn out to have been a 6pointer), and so with a massive score of 144.26 EMP, OC was stronger than TH (in spite of their good EMP). In fact, OC had the highest EMP in div 1 this week, and probably in all SAEFL. It resulted in 41 chances for OC, against 32 for TH. Since both teams played with a NSL 10 GK, OC deserved a win here. But we already saw in a previous match that when the differences are not that big, anything can happen, and this week, it happened here. Mark was lucky that his GK was in such good shape, as he saved a point for TH. Both teams win a point with this draw, where actually they both needed 3 points.

Lisbon United and Excelsior Warren are two teams at the bottom half of the table, and actually, for both teams my expectations were a little higher than the position they are in now. True, it’s too early to jump to any conclusions, as the fact is that with 5 and 6 points, they are mid-table teams. It’s just that the mid-table is still very big, and that they happen to be in the lower part of that mid-table, but of course anything is still possible. We saw EW reach the next cup stage last week, where LU was another div 1 team that missed the next round. Nuno will probably focus on the league this season, while Simon still has all his options open. In this match, both Nuno and Simon fielded almost the same NSL. Both teams played CP, and it was obvious that LU is a strong CP team (it’s their nr. 1 tactics), where EW just played it for the occasion. LU had the best of it, and that resulted in some EMP more, which of course led to more chances: 27 against 20. But once again this week, it was up to the GK’s to decide the match. Or, actually, NOT to decide a match, as this match (very much like the previous one) ended without a winner. If LU would have won this one, no one would have been surprised, but once again it’s proven that winning a match isn’t as easy as it might seem sometimes. Both teams winning 1 point. Or losing 2 maybe.

Both The Boelewieten and NoShaKi WC’98 made it to the next round of the cup last week, NW after a thriller against AA (who appeared sure of the next round but were left empty handed). This week it’s time to focus on the league again. Both teams didn’t start too well this season, but where TB managed to recover a little, and win some matches in the last couple of weeks, NW wasn’t able yet to turn things around, and the team that we know as a mighty champion with a great manager, is still at the bottom of the table. In this weeks match, that same line seems to be followed, as TB was the better team, where NW must be still looking to improve things. Sure, the red card for Aliadiere wasn’t very helpful for NW, but even without that, TB would have been too strong. Jeroen will be happy, as TB is not just out of the danger zone, but with 10 points TB is chasing the top 2 now, together with JG, who are only in front of TB because of a better goal difference. With this loss, it will be no surprise that NW is still on the bottom of the table, but although that doesn’t look good, for some reason I just have the idea that it all will turn out well in the end for NW. They are just too good to relegate, and if you look at last weeks cup game, you’ll know what they are capable of, which is more than they showed this week. However, if Mike wants to prevent getting in deeper trouble, he really needs to win some points soon!
