DIVISION 2 GAMES

Both Adirondak Renegades and the African Selects are at the bottom places of division 2. In fact, now we have a 3rd division, both AR and AS are even at relegation positions. So, in this confrontation, a victory was needed for either team, in order to at least attempt avoiding relegation. Both Don and Colin were aware of that. Don played a boost, and Colin even played a grudge in order to secure a victory. It was Colin who put more NSL on the field, but it was Don who played with the better EMPing team (just look at his ONE with those strong AM’s and WH’s, that is so very effective!). That is why it was AR who had the better team, who created the chances, and who managed to score one of those. It was only one, but that was enough for a victory and 3 points. AR will probably still be in the relegation zone, on goal difference, but at least they made a nice step towards escapint that zone, while the problems for AS are increasing, as if they want to avoid going down for 2 seasons in a row, they actually have to win matches like this.

The third team in the relegation zone is Stannington Historical, and in fact they are the team at the very bottom of div 2, still without points. A position where the Dead Scientists were last season, occasionally, but this season is different. Where Len is still rebuilding his SH (and looking at how many young players he has, it will work out for him in time, the only question is how long he has to wait for it), DS is already a step further in the rebuilding. This season, Tim is in the race for a top position, and looking at how things are going now, they are at least going for the playoffs, and who knows what more. In this weeks match, that good form is continued: DS proved to be stronger in NSL, in EMP, and also in chances. And that led to a 2-0 victory for DS, that was very much deserved. DS keep winning, while SH is still without points, and if they don’t want to continue their rebuild in the third division, something has to be done at Someplace Old.

The Jazz and Melchester Rovers are two teams that had a good start. But where TJ more or less continued the good results, MR lost some games recently, which brought them to the lower half of the midtable. Where MR can fully focus on that league position now, TJ still has to spread their attention over both league and cup, as last week TJ made it to the last 16, where MR didn’t make it. Still, in this game, it seemed like Stewart has all his focus on the league, as his Jazz was so much better than Bruces Rovers. The difference in EMP was more than 22, and with differences this big, there’s no room for surprises. The victory for TJ was 11-5, and it was a fair one. TJ is chasing the top teams now, with 12 points out of 6 matches. MR is falling down the league table, after their good start, and Bruce has to watch out now not to get too close to the relegation zone.

Grammar United and England U21 are the numbers 2 and 3 of the league table, both chasing the leader, DL, and that of course made this the match of the week. EU, the number 2, are even 3 points ahead of GU, so a defeat for GU would mean (especially after we have seen DS and TJ win) that they would have to do a step back in their race for a top position. Of course, both Michael and Mike understood the importance of this game, and both managers played a boost. That resulted in a good performance from both teams, as GU and EU reached EMPs that could do well in div 1. However, EU’s WingHalf play looked nice, but we all know how strong GU’s TS can be, and so once again, we could witness a 0-0 stalemate at the Olympic Park. GU even were better, but the difference was smaller than 5 EMP, and with this defense, that was not enough for a smother shot. Altogether, I think you can call this a fair draw, and maybe for both Michael and Mike the most important result is that they haven’t lost this one. But with the numbers 2 and 3 winning only 1 point, I think that DL can be the big winner this week, if they manage to win their own match…..

….and we don’t have to wait long to get an answer to that: Martijn indeed IS the big winner this week, as once again he managed to win his match, and so the gap between the nr. 1 team and the other teams only gets bigger. In an attractive match, in which both Martijn and Kelly played WP, the EMP for both teams was impressive. Look at the 138.45 for DL: only 2 teams in div 1 could top that this week! Almost 90 chances were created, of which the most were for DL, cause they had the better EMP, and since they also had the better GK, the victory for DL after 90 minutes was fair. In the previous match, I said that GU – EU was the match of the week, but that was only because of the rankings on the table. In fact, if any match deserved to be match of the week, it was this one. Kelly’s performance with PN was great, good enough to win the match against almost any other opponent, but then again DL in this current form looks unstoppable, and with 18 points out of 6 matches, the gap with the nr. 2 is already 4 points, and that makes DL a very strong candidate for the title. However, (and I bet that is something that Martijn would like to point out as well): last year, DL was in almost exactly the same situation, and we all remember that there turned out to be 3 teams to catch up with them in the end. So let’s not cheer to soon.

TEAM PENALIZED

Newton Heath and Englehart Storm are solid midtable teams, although a look at the table tells us that it only takes 1 victory to take either team to the top of the midtable. However, there is only 1 team that can win this match of course, so unless this match would end in a draw, either Robert or Peter would make a jump on the league table. The match was very exciting, as there was not much difference between these 2 teams. ES had the better NSL, but then NH had the better EMP. That resulted in more chances, but then again ES had a better GK. That should have made things even. But it didn’t, as GK Howard apparently thought it was still Season 9, and keeped better than his opponent, and so the match ended in a 10-6 victory for NH. NH jump to the top half of the table, but ES still has no need to worry, and they are still in the race for the playoffs.
