DIVISION 1 GAMES

Alcohol Anonymous was considered to be at least an outsider for the title this season, if not more. However, after 6 matches, they are “only” at 4th position. In their chase after the top 3, a home match against Apocalypse is of course a match that needs to be won, and of course Nathan knew that. Nathan picked the ideal antitactics against WP (which was a logical anticipation), and played a strong (NSL 94) OFF team. That and the home bonus should have to do the trick. But on the other side, Martin did not want to give away this match, and played his strongest WP side. That WP side is no less than 101.5 NSL, so very strong. In fact, it was so strong, that the OFF and the home bonus was not enough to stop them. AP was simply too good and beat AA at The Local Pub. The difference wasn’t that big, but it was in AP’s favour and enough for 3 points. Looking at this match, it makes you wonder why AP was in the relegation zone all this time. Anyway, with these 3 points, they take a nice step towards avoiding that relegation. AA on the other side, fall behind when it comes to the race for the title. A little too far, if you’d ask me……

SAEFL SEASON 12 WEEK 10

The confrontation between InterQuartile Rangers and FC Inferno, was a match between the numbers 5 and 11 of the table. Both teams are in need of points, but for a different reason: IQ need points to escape relegation, and FI need points to follow the top teams, and get a good league position. A first quick look at this match, makes you conclude that Marco was unlucky, seeing 2 players leave the pitch with a red card, and that’s what cost FI the match. However, doing the math learns that these 2 red cards cost FI only 6 EMP, and that means that IQ still would have been better. Sure, with both teams playing defense, so not many chances on either side, you never know what would have happened, and maybe FI would have even got away with a draw. However, in spite of the red cards, I guess it’s safe to say that this victory for IQ is fair, and Terry wins 3 important points to keep IQ safe. FI will probably focus on the cup again this season.

SAEFL SEASON 12 WEEK 10

The reigning champion against the current leader of the table, or one of those matches in the “who’s the best dutch manager-competition”: Catbel Athletic against Druss Legends. CA isn’t doing as good as last year. Not by far! DL on the other hand, are more and more looking like to pull the same trick that CA pulled last season: win the title after just being promoted to div 1. DL are on a high, and apparently, Ivo decided that his CA would not be the team to stop them, as CA rested most players. Which can be considered a wise decision. A lot of players were in need of rest, and since you can’t win all your matches (not being CA this season), you have to pick your matches to give up. And in this case, a match against one of this seasons top teams is not a bad pick. The strategic SM makes that even in spite of giving away the victory, DL doesn’t win too big, and also, of course, CA doesn’t lose that big. Martijn will be happy to continue leading the table, while Ivo has to be sure that his players have rested enough with this, as after having seen both AP and IQ win their match this week, CA have to watch out more and more!

SAEFL SEASON 12 WEEK 10

The Jazz against The Boelewieten is a match between the team that is just on the good side of the relegation zone (TJ), and the team in the race for the title, chasing DL, only 1 victory away (TB). A match that you’d expect to be tough for TJ. But the result in the end shows a 1-0 victory for TJ. Does that mean we had false expectations? Nope. Unlike the previouse match, between IQ and FI, in this case Jeroen DOES have every right to feel bad about the result. It begins with the red card for DM Elldone. That cost TB 8.32 EMP, and with that, TB would have EMPed almost 135, which would surely have been enough for a victory. But even in spite of that red card, TB was still the better team. However, the difference was not enough for a smother shot, so the match was destined to end in a boring 0-0 draw. If….. If it weren’t for that penalty that TJ were awarded, and that brought TJ the victory. TJ win 3 very important points, because after having seen IQ and AP win their match, the danger line was coming nearer. However, now they keep the distance, so Stewart will be very pleased. Jeroen will feel sad, and he’s entitled to. However, I wouldn’t say he was robbed. When playing ZD, you know you won’t create a lot of chances, and since there’s always a chance of getting a penalty against you, when playing defense, these things happen easily, we could have seen that often enough in all these years. That’s just a disadvantage of playing ZD, or any other defensive tactics.

SAEFL SEASON 12 WEEK 10

….and in the Grammar United versus Tottenford Heats game, we see yet another example of 2 teams playing defense against each other, and where that can lead to. Both Michael and Mark played a 94.25 NSL team, both defensive. (GU played TS, and TH played ZD). However, in spite of the home advantage, it was TH who were the better performing team, with almost 6 EMP difference. 6 EMP is, as we know, enough for a smother shot. However, that smother shot turned out to be the only chance created in the entire match, and when AS Rage missed the chance, the match ended as it started: 0-0. Michael is lucky with GU’s defensive tactics, as TH’s only chance was missed, and that is possible in SAEFL, so it wins him a point, just as Mark and TH lose 2 points, just as easy.

SAEFL SEASON 12 WEEK 10

NoShaKi WC’98 against Jazz Greats is the last match this week, and here we see a title candidate (JG, only 2 points behind DL) against NW, who are in that grey area that is both mid-table and just above relegation zone, so in that position where anything can still happen. Mike already expected Bart to play his strong WP, and countered that, of course, with OFF. And once again, this match proves that OFF is indeed a good tactics for damage control, and if the opponent is not very very strong, it may very well win you the game, but when your opponent is as strong as this Jazz Greats team, it’s just damage control: JG still win, because they’re the better team by far, but at least they don’t win big. Fair result, no doubt about it. Bart will be happy, not just with the 3 points, but with losses for TB, AA and FI, he and Martijn are the winners of the week. Just where Mike and Ivo are the losers of the week, as with victories for TJ, IQ and AP, things are getting very very exciting from position 6 to 11.
