DIVISION 2 GAMES

Last week, I already mentioned that in div 2, there is quite a gap between the top 6 teams and the bottom 6 teams. Amongst each other however, the differences aren’t that big in the top or the bottom. So, when 2 teams in the top half play against each other, it is automatically exciting. Fanatics United against Adirondak Renegades is such a mach. FU is in 6th position, and AR are in 3rd position. The difference between them is only 2 points, so if FU would win their home match, they could easily set things right. They failed however. And it’s not because of their good intentions. No, Brian and his FU were so unlucky, to lose 2 players in the first 6 minutes, because they were shown a red card. That cost FU no less than (12.46+11.76=) 24.22 EMP!!! Man, we all lose EMP due to red cards now and then, but this might very well be a new record! But on the other hand, Don wasn’t that “lucky” either, as AR also had to play with 10 already after 8 minutes, also because of a red card. That cost them 11.07 EMP. The only difference is that it did not cost AR the victory, as in the end they beat FU 19-9, because of a 18 EMP difference. Now, let’s have a closer look, and see what would have happened without red cards: FU: 126.20 EMP against AR: 131.03 EMP. That means that AR would have won this anyway, so although Brian may feel sad about the result, he can’t say that it wasn’t really fair. Don will be happy to win 3 important points in his race for at least a top 2 position (direct promotion) in a difficult away game.

SAEFL SEASON 12 WEEK 11

The match of the week in div 2 is, without a doubt, Lisbon United against Excelsior Warren, as it is the clash between the numbers 1 and 2 on the league table. Sure, I already mentioned that the differences in the top half are not that big (small, in fact!), the top 2 teams fighting each other is always special. However, in spite of the importance of this match, neither Nuno nor Simon played a boost nor a grudge. That made that this was an “open” match, in which Simon (so it looks) even decided to rest some players, maybe hoping that he would have a better chance in a home game, against this strong LU. Like the previous game, we saw another 2 players leave the field early because of a red card, although the EW team only lost their player close to the end of the game. But that didn’t matter. The difference between LU and EW was too big, and it was in LU’s favour. The 4-0 was a fair result, and that means that Nuno and LU now take the lead in div 2 on their own. Because of the loss for EW, AR pass them on the table, and now Simon has to wait what PN and DS have done, to see if he doesn’t fall back even more.

SAEFL SEASON 12 WEEK 11

Oaklake City against Newton Heath is a relegation match. OC and NH are the numbers 10 and 9 on the league table, and only 2 points separate them. In other words: a victory for OC would mean that they change positions, and OC would be on the good side of the dangerline, while a victory for NH would mean that they would create a little gap, and with that some “breathing space”. Both Keith and Robert knew how important this match could and would be, and so they both played a grudge. With that leveled, it was the home advantage plus the –at least in this match- better OC team that made the difference. And that difference wasn’t even slightly, it was around 15 EMP, so the victory (in this case: 12-8) for OC. was fair. Keith will be happy, with his OC finally on the good side of the relegation zone, while Robert will be worried, now his grudge didn’t bring for NH what he hoped for.

SAEFL SEASON 12 WEEK 11

Defrosted Tunafish is the team leading the bottom half. In their home game against Point of Napier, they can make an effort to decrease the gap between them and the top half teams. We already saw 2 top half teams lose their match this week, and since FU was one of them, it meant that a victory for DT would bring them at only 1 point from the top half of the table. The only problem for Claudio, is that he would meet a strong opponent this week, in Kelly’s PN. PN was the nr. 4 on the table, and with 3 points they would of course climb the table, after the loss for EW. It looks like Claudio even felt that PN would be too strong, as he rested some good players, and with that, he gave away the match. A match that PN might have won anyway, so it could have been a good decision. (Although the difference in EMP wasn’t even that high, so who knows what might have happened if Claudio really would have gone for it). Anyway: 3 easy points for Kelly, and she sees PN climb to 3rd position now. DT remain at the bottom half, but still on the safe side of course.

SAEFL SEASON 12 WEEK 11

Deo Volente against England U21 is the match between the numbers 11 and 12 on the table, so the clash at the bottom. If either Otto or Mike wanted to do something about their poor league position, and take a step towards escaping relegation, this would be –by far!- the best way to do so! Sounds like an important match, but both Otto and Mike decided to save their grudges. Of course, looking backwards, it’s always easy to make statements about that, and in this case, I would say that Otto made a good decision, as DV apparently won this game anyway. DV was better than EU, the difference was 10 EMP, and that was enough for a 20-12 result in the end, and with that DV climb the table (they pass NH, on goal difference), but remain in the danger zone. However, the safe position (the one that OC just conquered) is only 1 point away, so everything is still possible. For EU, the situation has got even worse, but on the other hand: for them, that safe position is only 4 points away, so with 14 matches left to play, there’s no need for despair yet.

SAEFL SEASON 12 WEEK 11

The second bottom-half / top-half match this week, is Englehart Storm against Dead Scientists. And ES managed to get the surprise of the week, in the very last match this week, by beating DS, and that with big numbers. We already saw that Tim had to miss some DS player(s) due to injuries. On top of that, in this match FB Moore had to leave the field injured, so DS weren’t as strong as they can be. ES did field their strongest possible team, and with the home advantage on top of that, they were better than DS. In fact, they were 18 EMP better, and that is a lot! The 11-1 victory was big, but just look at the figures, it was fair. DS stay at 5th position (because FU also lost their match), while ES climb to 7th, only 2 points behind FU and 4 behind DS.
