DIVISION 1 GAMES

NoShaKi ’98 against FC Inferno is a match between 2 teams that need to win points, but both for a different reason. NW is in the danger zone, and of course Mike doesn’t want his team to relegate, so he needs to win this one. Marco needs FI to win points for a different reason: in the last few weeks, we have seen DL and JG create a gap between them and the rest. If any of the teams that chase them (there are no less than 4 teams with 14 points on a shared 3rd place, well, only separated by goal differences) want to stay in a chasing position, they need to win this week. Both NW and FI played defense, maybe even thinking that not losing this game was more important than winning. It was the Noshaki defense that was stronger than the Inferno defense, also because of the home advantage. It wasn’t much of a difference, but at least enough for a smother shot, and since that was scored, NW beat FI 1-0. 3 important points for NW, although they still have to wait for the other results to see if it’s enough to climb to a safe position. FI lose contact with the top 2, and since everything at midtable is very close, the truth is that by now, they need to focus more at the teams beneath them, instead of at the top of the table.

SAEFL SEASON 12 WEEK 13

One of the other teams in that shared third position, is The Boelewieten. Will they be able to do what FI didn’t, and win their game? It would not be easy this week, as Jeroen and TB faced Catbel Athletic, in an away game. CA is a mediocre team so far this season. They seem to good for the danger zone, and not good enough to win prizes, and that makes them a little overlooked so far. They are in that grey area, only 4 points away from the danger zone, and only 3 points away from the 3rd position. Apparantly, this was one of those matches that Ivo didn’t let CA go all the way, because some important players need rest once in a while. Jeroen could have taken advantage of that, but apparently, he did not play his strongest team either. Funny thing is that both Ivo and Jeroen may have rested players, they both did not field a crappy team, but a team that might be strong enough to win a point (or maybe even more) if the other team would give up the game. That made that both CA and TB were almost equally strong this match. TB slightly better, but not enough for even a smother shot. So, the game might very well have ended in a bore 0-0 draw, if it weren’t for the fact that both teams were awarded a penalty. Since CA scored, and TB missed, all of a sudden the result in the end was a 1-0 victory. Finally, we see CA being lucky in a match, because the result might have been the other way around just as easy. With the loss, TB is the second team out of the race of chasing the top 2, while CA climb the table, in the run for 3rd position, just like FI and TB, with the same number of points.

SAEFL SEASON 12 WEEK 13

Druss Legends against Tottenford Heats is the clash between the numbers 1 and 3 on the table, so a top match. On paper that is, as the difference between them was already quite big before this match. TH happened to be the team with the best goal difference, of the teams in shared 3rd position, but they have just as many points as the nr. 6 on the table. We already saw FI and TB lose their game, and here we see the 3rd team chasing the top 2 lose their match this week. What made the difference, (well, except for a little luck on DL side of course), was the fact that DL did their best to win this match, and played a boost. TH of course did not want to lose this match, and they played a strong OFF team against DL’s predictable WingPlay. However, they did not go any further than just playing that strong team, as Mark kept his boosts and grudges untouched this week. Martijns boost made that DL was just as strong as TH this week, and where both teams were awarded 11 shots, DL was the luckiest, as they scored one more goal: 6 against 5. With that, DL win a crucial match, as with TH being the 3rd team in 3rd position that lose their match this week, while DL win, only AA is left to chase DL and (most likely) JG, as the difference between DL and TB, FI and TH has grown to 12 points by now.

SAEFL SEASON 12 WEEK 13

The match between Jazz Greats and Apocalypse, is top/bottom match. Jazz Greats are the number 2 team, and seem to be the only team capable of keeping up with DL, only 2 points behind. On the other side, Apocalypse is a team in the relegation zone, having won only a third of JG’s points so far. Now, although they played an away game, and although JG by far is not a rival team when it comes to AP’s fight against relegation, Martin decided to play a grudge. That might not sound logic at first sight, but it makes more sense than you think. It might be a little soon to already say this, but for now it looks like the fight for the title is between JG and DL. JG, being a title contender, has the objective to win every week. In order to achieve that, they need to rest their players once in a while, of course. You can’t always afford to do that, but what better occasion than when you play a home match against a relegation candidate, assuming that they will give that match away, saving their players for more important matches, against direct rivals. Martin anticipated on that, hoping that that would be exactly what Bart thought, and tried to surprise him. However, unfortunately for Martin, he gambled wrong. Bart apparently regarded AP stronger than their position on the table reflects, and played a strong JG, with 2 freaks. That, plus the fact that Martin was even more unlucky, and saw his NSL 10 GK leave the field injured, and been replaced by a NSL 8 GK, was of course enough for JG to win the game this week as well. With that, JG stay only 2 points behind DL (and jump away 3 points from TH, TB, FI), while AP remain in the danger zone.

SAEFL SEASON 12 WEEK 13

The fourth and last of the 4 teams chasing the top 2, is Alcohol Anonymous. They faced a difficult match as well this week: the away game against InterQuartile Rangers. Only 1 position separated these teams on the table: AA are the number 6 because their goal difference is not as good as the others, and IQ are the nr. 7 on the table, only 1 point behind the nrs. 3 to 6. Which automatically means that, looking at this weeks results, a victory for IQ would mean that they would climb to 3rd position. Terry and IQ played their strong ONE team, but on the other side, Nathan played the strong ZD that AA can play. As a result of that, IQ reached over 132 EMP, but in spite of that good performance, it was not enough to create any chances against AA’ s 137 EMP. In fact, AA was 0.55 short of being awarded a smother shot, but IQ just was too strong for giving that away. So, the match ended as it started: 0-0, and that is a fair result. But although it is fair, I think both Terry and Nathan will feel like losing 2 points.

SAEFL SEASON 12 WEEK 13

The Jazz and Grammar United are bottom half teams: GU is in last position, while TJ is on 9th position, just on the good side of the danger line. Since the difference between GU and the numbers 10 and 11 is already 4 points, Michael and GU are in need of points to do something about that, and this match against TJ is just one of those matches that would sound perfect for that. On the other side: after we have seen NW win their match this week, Stewart and TJ need to win this match to stay out of the relegation zone. TJ, already having the home advantage, also played a boost to increase their chance of winning this match. When it also turned out that GU had to end the match with 10 players, after a red card, you would think that that would be enough for a victory. But hey, we’re talking GU here. And it’s very hard to score against GU. In fact, in spite of the red card, and TJ’s boost, in the end GU was still the better team, looking at EMP. They were just unlucky that because of that, the diffence was not enough aymore for a smother shot. That made that neither team created a chance, and so the match ended in a 0-0 draw, which was, all things considered, a fair result in the end. However, for GU this was not enough to make a step towards escaping relegation, and for TJ it was also 2 points short of getting a real good result, as in spite of winning 1 point, they drop towards the relegation zone.
