Leg 1 – CA7 AR9. The first leg was a bit of a surprise. AR is going for promotion and currently sits on top of the Division 2 table. CA with 11 pts is currently 12 pts behind the Division 1 leader, which means they will probably focus on the cup. A 2 goal lead is small, especially for a team like AR that doesn’t have a good defensive tactic. Surely, CA will come out blazing to move into the next round. But…., they didn’t. AR advances with a comfortable 8-4 victory. Did Ivo give up on the cup, or was he gambling on Don playing a very weak line-up so he wouldn’t go through? Don has some decisions to make, being in the final 8 of the cup and fighting for the Division 2 title. Aging will come up soon, so it is a little early to make that decision. But that time will come very soon!

Leg 1- MR 11 TH 14. MR lost the first leg at home against perennial Cup power TH. Will they pack it in and rest for the league or go after TH and try to advance? They go after TH, playing an aggressive WP and playing a boost. Unfortunately, MR GK D Seamen got injured and the lack of depth hurt MR. However, TH is a very experienced Cup side and had enough strength on the pitch so that they advance to the final 8. MR made a good effort, but TH is in the Quarter Finals and are probably one of the favorites to win it all. However, I’m sure there are some other teams that will have something to say about that!

Leg 1 - AA 2 AK 0. AA at 14 pts, 9 off the Division 1 lead, has a tough road ahead of them and may focus on the cup. AK manager David Thomas has stated in the press that he is going after the cup, and he certainly made a fine effort this match. Unfortunately for AK, Nathan is probably the finest defensive manager in the history of SAEFL, and he knows how to hold onto the 2 goal lead from the first round. AK GK Ryan fiercely guarded his goal, in fact so fiercely that he was sent off in the third minute. While this obviously didn’t help AK, it didn’t change the outcome. AK will now work on their very strong playoff chance, and AA will move on and make someone a very fierce opponent in the next round.

Leg 1 – IQ 2 FI 0. This to me is the match-up of this second Cup round. IQ, the defending Cup Champions faced perennial Cup power FI. IQ surprised me a bit in the first round by playing ZD, but it was successful as Terry added a boost and won a 2-0 victory at home. Marco played a very tactical defensive TS, so obviously both cagy managers are setting themselves up for the second leg. FI has a very good attacking side and certainly can come back from down 2 goals. This was obviously Marco’s plan and he played a strong ONE at home with a grudge and gained a 7-1 victory which was to advance to the quarterfinals. Terry again played ZD with a boost, but it wasn’t enough. It is a shame these 2 Cup powers met this early in the Cup, but such is life and SAEFL.

Leg 1 – DT 17 NW 10. DT gained a nice but not totally safe 7 goal advantage in the home match. NW used a CP in the first leg, but it obviously was not the right answer. NC decided to go for an all out attack at home in the second leg going with WP, but it wasn’t an all out effort as they did not play a boost or grudge. DT went with a defensive TC to protect the lead. They did not play a particularly strong line-up, but it probably would have been strong enough if they played with 11 players. I guess the nine men they played with most of the match was just not enough. NW moves into the Quarterfinals, a common occurrence, while DT will continue go after a playoff spot in league play.

Leg 1 – FU 14 TS 4. This match up is definitely one of the reasons the Cup is so much fun. We have a Division 2 team playing a Division 3 team, with one of them going to make it to the quarterfinals! In the first leg, FU decided that that team should be them as they gained a 10 goal league in the first leg. Certainly that would be enough to get them through. Or would it? TS attacked using LB the first leg, and it failed miserably. Rather than give up, they came back with a strong WP (92 nsl for a Div 3 team, pretty impressive) and used a grudge to win and gain a 21-10 victory. After doing the math and checking it twice, TS does indeed come back and advances the final 8 with an aggregate victory of 25-24. It’s always great to see a Division 3 team make it this far. Just how far can they go?

Leg 1 – NH 20 AP 16. A division 1 team against a Division 3 side. Obviously a mismatch, right? Obviously no! NH won the first match which featured both sides playing strong attacking tactics. The lead was nice, but certainly not safe against a strong attacking side such as AP. The second leg was a very physical match, with both sides having players sent off early and NH having 2 players injured. In the end, AP had the stronger and healthier side. Their WP led them to 19-8 victory and allowed them to advance. Congratulations to MR for a great effort, but it wasn’t quite enough. At lest not this time.

Leg 1 – EU 5 FA 1. Going into the second Cup round, this wouldn’t have appeared to be one of the more exciting match-ups. EU, last in Division 2, against FA, last in Division 3. EU gained a nice 5-1 victory at home in the first leg. FA played a very good tactical MM and added a boost, and held the difference to a very achievable 4 goals. They then used an attacking ONE tactic and a boost at home to go for the victory. EU also used an attacking ONE. The tactics were not the only attacking going on around the field as there were 2 red and 5 yellow cards issued! FA managed to make up the four goals they lost in the first leg with a 10-6 victory. Unfortunately for them, the 10-10 tie on aggregate was resolved in favor of EU on the away goals rule. Congratulations to EU for advancing and good luck to FA in building a team that obviously has some talent despite their league position.
