DIVISION 2 GAMES

7 points separate Englehart Storm and Adirondak Renegades, and that is the difference between a team fighting for the title (AR), and a team fighting for the playoffs (ES). Both for Derek and Don, it was important not to lose this match, in fact a win was what would be the only good result. Derek played a strong team, hoping that and the home advantage would be enough to surprise AR. Don, on the other side, knew it’s important to win matches like these if you want to win the title, and that it takes more than just a strong team to win these matches. That made him play a boost. Don was right, that AR needed a boost to win this match. However, what Don could not forsee, was he needed more that a boost to cover for the 2 red cards. As a result of that, the difference between ES and AR was very small, not only in NSL, but also in EMP, and the 9-9 in the end can be called a fair result, although I can image that Don will feel bad that on top of those 2 red cards, he got as many goals as ES while he had 2 chances more. And well, I guess Don is right to feel bad about that. Nonetheless: neither team lost this match, which is good, although when it comes down to it, both ES and AR could really have used a victory.

SAEFL SEASON 12 WEEK 15

Defrosted Tunafish is the number 6 on the table, so very much in the race for a playoff position, while Oaklake City has 5 points less, and is the nr. 10 on the table, so in the relegation zone. In this match, we could see that Keith played a strong OC, while Claudio rested players, and played a boost to make up for the loss of that. I don’t know whether he calculated it or not, but Claudio was lucky enough to see that that boost gave DT that little bit extra to be just a little better than OC. That was enough for the victory: 18-14. DT remain in the top half of course, and since I don’t think they really are a title candidate yet, you can conclude that this is a great result in the race for the playoffs. Keith and OC of course remain in the danger zone, and have to wacht out now, because the number of matches left to do something about it, is getting less every week.

SAEFL SEASON 12 WEEK 15

Point of Napier is the proud leader of the table, and after we just saw AR lose 2 points, Kelly could benefit by winning this weeks match. Their opponent this week is Deo Volente, the team that is on 9th position, just on the right side of the danger zone by a very narrow margin. Of course, Otto would like to do something about it, but Otto also knows that there are better opportunities than against the nr. 1, while DV is not the strongest team around. So, Otto rested a couple of his best DV players. That made, of course, that PN was better, even the red card for Candela did not change that, although it made the difference between DV and PN a lot smaller. In fact, if Otto would have known this up front, who knows what he might have done. But hey, sometimes SAEFL is just like real football: you’re never sure of what’s about to happen. That is why I guess that, the victory for PN, no matter how small, is fair. PN stay nr. 1, while DV have to keep watching out not to relegate.

SAEFL SEASON 12 WEEK 15

England U21 and Newton Heath are the numbers 11 and 12 on the table, so the bottom 2 teams. It looks like they are heading towards relegation, and of course, if there is a chance to prove that wrong and do something about it, it would be in a direct confrontation. A victory for either team (although the difference in points is 6, in NH’s advantage) would give that sparkle of hope for a better second half of the season. Or actually: if NH would win this one, they would have a better chance of escaping relegation actually, because the difference between them and the nr. 9 is six points less of course. Both Mike and Robert knew the importance of this match of course, and it will be no surprise that they both played a grudge in an ultimate effort to win this game. Robert was unlucky to see MF Heathcote have to leave the pitch with a red card already early in the match, but looking at the figures of this game, I doubt it that it really made a difference when it comes to winning or losing this match, as EU was simply better. 3 points for EU, and with those they are still 6 points away from that safe 9th position. But at least it’s 3 points more than last week, and you can only take one step at a time. Robert won’t be happy with this result for NH, but at least he has the consolation that in spite of this result, the situation for NH is still better.

SAEFL SEASON 12 WEEK 15

Excelsior Warren is the number 4 on the league table, but that’s only on goal difference. Only 1 points separates the top 4 teams. We have already seen PN win their match and AR lose theirs: what will EW have done? Maybe midseason aging wasn’t very kind for them, or maybe Simon really needed to rest a couple of good players. Don’t know yet what it was, but the truth is that EW did not field a very strong team. It was nowhere near what Brian and Fanatics United fielded. When it comes to league table positions, FU are way behind EW, the 7 points difference means the difference between playing for the league title and playing for a playoff position (and not being on the good side of the line). However maybe the second half of the league, after aging, will be different for both teams. At least it will if they go on like this.

SAEFL SEASON 12 WEEK 15

Lisbon United and Dead Scientists are the numbers 3 and 5 on the table, so LU vs. DS can be called a top match. However, in reality, LU is one of those 4 teams fighting for the first position, while DS is 5 points behind, and although that is not very much, we can say though that there’s a gap. By winning this match, Nuno could do himself and the other 3 teams in the top a favor, as it would only make that gap bigger. Besides, after we have already seen EW and AR spill points, and only PN win their match, Nuno could do himself and LU an even bigger favour by walking away from 2 rivals, being the only team at only 1 point from PN. However, Tim and DS did not want to give up just like that. Au contraire! They even played a boost, hoping to surprise LU and join those top 4 teams and make it a top 5, which – after we have seen some of those teams lose points- wasn’t such a bad thought. But unfortunately for Tim, not only did DS suffer from a red card, even without that, they just were not good enough to beat LU. LU was much, much better: almost 20 EMP difference! That has to be enough for a victory, you’d think. Well, most of the times it is. But this is football, and anything can happen. When playing ZD, 20 EMP difference only means 4 smother shots, and although 4 smother shots usually means that you score at least one of them…..there is always a chance that you miss all 4 of them. That chance is 6.25 percent, which means that – statistically- in every 16 matches in which 4 chances are created, there is 1 match in which all of those 4 chances are missed. Well, Nuno: this is that match! I understand how you must feel, after such bad luck. Just for the record: I have been there myself, and saw that it can be even worse: imagine how you would feel if on top of this, DS would have been awarded a penalty, and would have scored that! You see? This isn’t all that bad!
