CUP MATCHES

8 teams have made it to the quarter finals of the SAEFL cup. Now that is not something special of course, because as long as I can remember, there are 8 teams every season to make it to the quarter finals. However, for the teams that make it, it is special. This years quarter finalists, are NW, AA, FI, TH and AP from div 1, AR and EU from div 2, and TV from div 3. Already in the first of the 4 quarter final matches, we see AR and EU play each other. The good thing about that, is that we know that at least one div 2 team will make it to the semi-finals. The bad thing is that we know for sure that there won’t be more than 1 div 2 team in the semi finals. Who would it be? In this match, you can see the what makes the difference: Adirondak Renegades is very much in the fight for the title (or at least promotion to div 1), while EU is not. For a team like AR, with all respect, it is too much to go for the cup and have a serious chance, and go for the league title too and have a serious chance. (Not just for AR by the way, I guess this goes for almost any SAEFL team these days). So, Don had to make a choice between going for the league and going for the cup (in which reaching the last 8 teams already was a surprise). It wasn’t a tough choice I guess. Anyway, the league of course seems to have Dons priority, and that shows. Only 86.50 NSL was fielded, and of course, if you want to make it to the semi-finals, that is not enough. For EU of course it was a different story. Mike, or actually: his team, are not doing great in the league, but this match against AR was a perfect chance to make up for that, as reaching to the semi’s (and who knows what more could be possible then?) would enlight this season for EU a lot. Mike put in some extra effort and played a boost, and against the 86.50 NSL from AR, that turned out to be more than enough: EU was a lot better, it was more than 20 EMP difference, and the 19-9 victory in the end was very much deserved. With this win, EU are almost certain of reaching the semi-finals, as I can not imagine they’d give this away in their home match. Especially because I do not think that Don and AR will try anything in the return. So, I think I can almost congratulate Mike on the good result.

SAEFL SEASON 12 WEEK 16

This clash between Trav Spoodle and NoShaKi WC’98 was very interesting. Up front, you’d say that the difference between a div 3 team and a div 1 team could be big, but TS may add the div 3 boost here of course. Further, TS is no title candidate, and can fully focus on the cup. NW is no title candidate either, but Mike has to watch out for relegation, and cannot afford to only have eyes for the cup. That showed, in this match. TS of course also had home advantage, and man, how unlucky Warren was to see CF Hayes, one of his best players, had to leave the pitch because of a red card, after only 18 minutes. That cost him 12.84 EMP! Without those almost 13 EMP, TS was still the better team, and that resulted in a victory for the home team: 14-11. However, with only 3 goals difference, anything is still possible, and we have to wait for the return match to see which team will make it to the semi-finals. Too bad for Warren, but Mike will be lucky that he still has a chance, as if it weren’t for the red card, I don’t think he still would have had a chance by now. But on the other side, both TS and NW really will have to go all the way if they want to make it to the last 4 teams, so it won’t be easy either way.

SAEFL Season 12 WEEK 16

Alcolhol Anonymous and FC Inferno are the numbers 5 and 7 in div 1. Last week, these 2 teams already happened to meet each other in the league, and the result of that match was a lucky 1-0 win for FI, because actually, that match had 0-0 written all over it. This week unless either Nathan or Marco would decide to totally give up on the cup and go for the league, promised to be just as exciting, and it was expected that the difference between these 2 big teams would be very small once again. And once again, we saw a very defensive match: TS vs. TS A match that could have written 0-0 all over it just as much, if it weren’t for that little bit extra that Marco decided to give, by playing a boost. And man, if there ever was a boost well spent in the FI history, it will be this one: just have a look at the stats: with this boost, the difference between AA and FI was 5.39 EMP, which is just enough for 1 smother shot. When WH Fuzue made no mistake and scored, that meant a 1-0 victory for FI. Another loss for AA, although Nathan cannot complain about this one as he could about the previous one. Of course, it’s just a 1-0 difference, and since that is the narrowest possible margin, nothing has been decided yet. However, it will be very very difficult for Nathan to make up things in the return, the away game at FI, because FI has proven to be one of the toughest teams to beat in SAEFL. But on the other hand, 1-0, even an unfair 1-0 would be enough for AA to make it to a penalty shoot-out of course, and who knows what could happen there.

SAEFL Season 12 WEEK 16

Tottenford Heats against Apocalypse is another div 1 clash, as it’s the match between the nrs. 4 and 11. Mark, although on 4th position, is not going for the league, and knowing that it can only mean one thing: TH is going for the cup! When TH is going for the cup you better beware, because if Mark wants the cup, TH usually gets far! In fact, in season 8 and 9 they were the cup winners, and the only reason that they did not win it in season 10 was because they went for the title. And turned out winners there as well. As a result of that, TH had to rebuild a little last season, but this season they are back, and what better way to show it than………….go for the cup of course. Will Martin be able to do stop TH? Well, AP have done a good job reaching the quarter finals of course, but when you look at the league table, you will notice that AP has more things to handle than just the cup: they are in serious trouble when it comes to their league position (if they want to stay in div 1 that is), and –like NW- can’t afford to only have eyes for the cup. That must have been why Martin decided to rest most of his strong WP team, and play ENF with only 86.25 NSL. Where I come from, that is called: giving up on the cup and going for the fight against relegation. And I have to admit: I cannot blame Martin, I guess I would have done exactly the same in his position. On top of all that, AP also suffered from a red card, so in the end, TH had a very, very easy victory: 12-1. Of course, you can say a million times that this is football, and anything can happen, but I say that not everything can happen. Mark and TH are far too experienced to make that many mistakes in the return, that this result will be turned around, and I guess that it is safe to say that TH is in the semi-finals. Who will join them? Will EU join TH, as expected? Will AA be able to surprise FI? Will NW be able to set things right in their home match? We will know in 2 weeks!
