DIVISION 1 GAMES

Grammar United, the number last on the table, play a home match against FC Inferno this week. FC Inferno are a top half team, but that doesn’t mean that the league has their first priority. We’re talking FI here: they are going for the cup! After last weeks result (a victory in the away game against AA, so a very good result indeed), Marco apparently had to rest some players. And it showed Of course, the ONE he put on the pitch was still pretty good, but not good enough to beat GU. We all know that Michael and GU have a great defense, and it is very difficult to score against them. In this particular case, FI was even good enough for a smother shot, but when GU was awarded a penalty, they evened the score. Sure, it might have been a little lucky, but on the other hand: in GU’s position, winning 1 point also means losing 2, and GU sure is in need of points if they want to stay in div 1, so they need more than a draw, no matter how lucky that draw was. FI will not be too sad about the loss, as they seem safe enough. However, the difference between the teams from positions 3 to 11 are still very small (at least before this weeks games), so all those teams on the good side of the relegation zone better don’t think they’re safe too soon!!!

SAEFL Season 12 WEEK 17

There was a lot of discussion about the Tottenford Heats vs. Jazz Greats match, last week. Mark and Bart were bragging tactics, trying to divert each other. Was Mark trying to play OFF against Barts WP? Was Bart counting on that, and trying to surprise Mark with a TS tactics? Did Mark count on that, and if so, did he thing about countering that with another surprise? In the end, it turned out that both Mark and Bart decided to play their own strongest tactics, which meant CP against WP. Besides that, both teams also played a boost, so that levelled out as well. Having said that, what made the difference is that Bart simply had the better team. We all know that TH is pretty strong, but against the 103 NSL WP team that Bart played with JG, it just wasn’t enough. Even the red card for DS Bleys did not matter, although it surely made that the difference between TH and JG became even smaller. However, it was still big enough for JG to win the game, and yes, the victory was fair. 3 very important points in one of the most difficult away games for JG, who –with this win- also increase the gap with the nr. 4 team. And since TH is still in the cup (and we all know how high they value that), it is by now that they are out of the race for the title, just like FI (because losing 2 points in the previous match.) This victory also means that, if DL does not win this weeks game, JG climb to 1st position again .

SAEFL Season 12 WEEK 17

The Jazz are on 10th position, which is just on the wrong side of the danger line. However, being on the good side of that line is only 1 point away (or in this case, because of goal difference, maybe 2). So, the home match against Alchohol Anonymous, a team that only has 4 points more, could be a good opportunity to do something about that. In order to do that, Stewart played a boost, and hoped that that would do the trick for him. However, have a look at the stats: Stewart was unlucky to see that the NSL bonus from the boost (all 3 bonuses!) ended up with the wrong players. Not even 1 AM was picked….. In spite of that, I don’t think it would have made a difference in the end, when it comes to what team would have won the game. AA was the better team, and with their strong defense (97 NSL), even with a boost bonus for 2 or 3 AM’s in the TJ team, they would still have had less EMP. The 1-3 victory for AA in the end, and the 3 points that come with that, were just what Nathan came to Toon City for. With the 3 points, AA stay in the top half of the table, in fact they climb to 5th position now. TJ stay in the relegation zone, still not too far away from a safe position, but if they want to win points (or matches) against tough teams like AA, Stewart better play grudges instead of boosts.

SAEFL Season 12 WEEK 17

After we saw JG win their game, the biggest question was what Druss Legends would do this week. Well, the answer to that is simple: DL won their match, again, and with that they stay on top of the table. Martijn did not even play a very strong side, but it was too good for this weeks IQ, because Terry rested a couple of his strongest players. With that, the OFF played by IQ was not enough to trouble DL, because OFF only works when you play your strongest players, due to the fact that OFF may take EMP from your opponent, but you don’t get any EMP bonus yourself either. DL keep the lead, and IQ remain in the bottom half but on the good side of the relegation line. Terry has to watch out for that line, because the differences are small, but I can imagine that he thinks that there are better opportunities then the away match against the nr. 1 on the table.

SAEFL Season 12 WEEK 17

The Boelewieten are the number 3 on the table. We have already seen the nrs. 1 and 2 win their game, and we have also seen the numbers 4 and 5 lose points this week. TB was 7 resp. 9 points away from the top 2 teams. Is that too much to overcome? Well, if they would lose this week, I think it will be. A victory however, would keep them in the race (although from a distance) and would keep Jeroens hopes alive. Besides, a victory would also create a 6 point gap with the nr. 4. In order to do that, Jeroen had to beat NoShaKi WC ’98, and although NW are a team in relegation danger, that is not an easy thing to do. As already mentioned before, the differences are very small this year, and although the NW roster may not be as impressive as it once was, Mike is still a very clever manager, and with NW you never know what you can expect. Will they play attacking, with WP, will they play defense, or will they have some (other) kind of surprise? In this case, it turned out to be the attacking WP that Mike picked, probably also because TB does have a strong ZD. However, Jeroen did not play ZD but CP, and just to make sure, he also played a boost. With that, there was no doubt about who was the strongest team, that was TB, and they were by far! The 21-5 victory was deserved, and with this win, TB stay 3rd, while NW stay on the good side of the relegation zone, but remain in trouble of course.

SAEFL Season 12 WEEK 17

The last match is a bottom half match, between Catbel Athletic and Apocalypse. CA, still the reigning champion, are the nr. 8, with 16 points, while AP are the number 11, with 11 points. Not a big difference, but it is the difference between being in the relegation zone(AP), and being only 1 victory away from the top half of the table(CA). In the last couple of matches, Martin has shown that midseason aging was good for him and AP. They had a couple of strong performances, and haven’t lost a match since the aging. That must have been the reason why Ivo played a grudge, as he did not want to take any chances. Losing against AP would mean losing 3 very important points, and when losing them against the nr. 11 team, it could easily bring CA even in relegation worries. It appeared to be a wise decision. Once again, AP played a strong WP, and with 99 NSL, that led to 133.88 EMP! So far, only TH and JG had more EMP, and they both played a grudge against each other, so that shows how strong this AP is. Mind you: in an away game! CA however, because of the 10% bonus that the grudge gave them (and they needed it! Look at the stats…..), were even better, and EMPed over 144. That was enough to break the brave AP attack: 26-11. AP remain empty handed, and with that they remain in the relegation zone, but if Martin keeps performing like this, I bet AP can escape relegation, and teams like NW, IQ and CA may start to get worried a little. CA have 19 points now, and with that they pass IQ on the table, but remain in the bottom half.
