DIVISION 3 GAMES

In division 3, Stannington Historical is way ahead of the rest. They are 9 points ahead of nr. 2, and no less than 13 points ahead of nr. 3, and with that, you can say that it isn’t the question IF SH will win promotion to div 2, but WHEN they will win it. This week, SH faced the away game against Speedsters, the nr. 5 on the table, so not just any team. However, just to indicate the difference, after 13 matches, SS have won 18 points, which is even less than half of what SH have won. This doesn’t say anything about SS by the way, it only explains how strong SH is this season. And it also explains why the nr. 5 team doesn’t stand a chance, not even in their home match, against this nr. 1 team. Shaun already expected that SH would be a lot better, and rested players. A look at the table, and the points, learns that that might be a smart decision. SS is no title candidate, but have every chance to do well in the playoffs. So, resting against the nr. 1 team might not be fun for SG and FE, but for teams like SS it makes sense. So, with that, SH add another victory to their total, while SS might even drop a place, but are more rested for matches they can win easier.

SAEFL Season 12 WEEK 17

Fantastic Eleven is that nr. 3 team I was just talking about. In theory, they are still in the race for the title, but I don’t think that, unless SH takes over LU’s jinx, they are able to catch up with both SH and SG. Mostly SH that is, by the way, as SG is only 4 points away. Which means that, if you forget about the title for a while, and focus on a top 2 position (which means direct promotion), Clive needs to fight for that second place, and when time is there, they can always wait and see if they can look a step beyond that. They still have overcome a 4 point gap with SG for second position, and for that, the first step of course is win your own matches. This weeks match was a home game against the Falcons. The Falcons are in 10th position, which would be a relegation place if it weren’t for the fact that you cannot relegate from div 3. Sounds like FE could have an easy win here, but apparently Clive did not want to take any risk whatsoever and played a grudge. When turns out, now, that Nik rested his best players, of course that was more than enough to win big, even the red card for Mantorras did not make any difference. So, FE win 3 points, and remain 3rd. What will SG have done?

SAEFL Season 12 WEEK 17

Well, here’s the answer to that: Smoking Guns just lost this weeks match! In their home game, Trav Spoodle played their strong WP, and with that, Warren proved that TS is a tough opponent to anyone, which by the way makes you wonder why they were only at 8th position. However, things are very close at div 3’s midtable, so with this victory they could easily jump to 5th spot just like that. SG and the ONE that Monty played, were simply not good enough to beat TS, and although the diffence wasn’t much with the 13-11 victory, it was a fair victory. With that, SG lose track of SH, who are now 12 points behind, and that might be just too much to overcome in the last 8 games. It would mean that SH would have to lose at least half of the remaining matches, and that only when SG manages to win all their remaining matches. It also means that the fight for the runner-up spot has become even more interesting, now only 1 point separates FE and SG. The fight for the playoffs remains exciting, as TS is back on a playoff spot now, but everything remains very close.

SAEFL Season 12 WEEK 17

Aros VSK against African Selects is a bottom half match. However, where AV is the number last on the table, and already know that they can start building their team for the future, AS is the number 7, only 1 win (or maybe even a draw) away from a top half position, so AS is very much in the race for the playoffs. Makes you think that this match would be an excellent opportunity for Colin to win 3 points and make a nice playoff move with that. However, Colin decided to rest some players, and played only 87.75 NSL against AV. The fact that AV played 6.5 NSL more, and that both teams ended up with 111 EMP says something about the quality difference. It means that even when resting the top players, AS is still too good to lose an away game against AV. However, I think that Colin better would have put 5 NSL more on the pitch and win this one, as 3 points are 3 points, and here was a situation in which they could have been won without too many problems. Nonetheless, Both AV and AS win a point. For AV, 1 point doesn’t change a lot. For AS means that they can climb to the top half of the table on goal difference, if MR lose their game. Otherwise they remain in the bottom half.

SAEFL Season 12 WEEK 17

Vitesse Arnhem against Adelaide Kickers means the nr. 4 against the nr. 9 on the table. Since VA is the number 4, and they play a home match, you’d think expect them to win this game. Nonetheless, Fred decided to play a grudge. Just to make sure that this match would be won. And win the match is exactly what VA would have done, if the players would have kept their nerves. However, somehow they couldn’t cope with the pressure, and both Vulakazi and Paijmans were shown a red card for nasty behaviour. That was too much for the poor VA to cope with, and in spite of Freds good intentions, it cost them (7.31+6.38=) 13.69 EMP, which means that VA gave away a match they should have won. 3 Easy points won in a difficult away game for David and AK, and with those 3 points, AK are very much in the race for the playoffs. VA are already on a playoff position, and that position is still a lot better than AK’s. And since VA is also not really a championship candidate, you’d think that this loss isn’t that important. However, just think how close a victory would have brought them to that 2nd place, after SG lost their match this week……

SAEFL Season 12 WEEK 17

Blue Storm FC versus Melchester Rovers is the match between the numbers 6 and 11 on the table. Only 6 points separate them, which in this case is the difference between a playoff position (MR) and a place at the bottom (BS). Bruce apparently didn’t want to lose this away game, as he played an attacking WP (of course, because this is MR), with players that actually needed some rest. He took a chance there, as he risked some injuries there. On the other side, Brandon did not field a great OL team, not even 90 EMP was reached, so that says it all. It also says that, in spite of 2 injuries, MR was still good enough for a victory, and with that, they remain in the top half of course.
