DIVISION 2 GAMES

Fanatics United and Englehart Storm are 2 teams who are fighting 2 battles: the fight against relegation and the fight for a playoff ticket. FU is on 10th position (relegation spot) with 16 ponits, only 6 points away from a playoff spot, while ES is on 8th position with 18 points, and (you can do the math: ) 4 points away from the playoffs. A home match for FU, and of course Brian knew that this would be an opportunity to turn things around, also knowing that avoiding relegation is even more important than the playoffs, and that a good result against ES would therefore be very important. That is why he thought this match was important enough to play a grudge, and I think he was right. The grudge plus the strong 100 NSL CP team not only makes you wonder how on earth FU was on a relegation spot, it was also –of course- enough to beat ES. FU now catches ES on the table, and Derek now has to wait what DV have done, to see if ES will be on the good side of the relegation line.

SAEFL Season 12 WEEK 19

Excelsior Warren against Dead Scientists is a top half match in div 2. EW are on 3rd postion, and in the race for at least direct promotion, while DS is 6 points behind EW on 6th spot, which is by now too far behind for the title race, but besides that everything is still possible. 2 top teams here, and that is why both Simon and Tim wanted to give their team just a little bit extra fuel, by playing a boost. But since they both wanted that, it didn’t make much difference of course. What DID make a difference, was the bad behavior of the EW players. Not one but two red cards were shown, and that cost EW too much EMP for a victory. On the other side, 3 injuries made a difference! Three! Sounds like DS will have a few difficult weeks ahead of ‘em. Anyway, a boost each, red cards here, injuries there, so a lot happened, but in the end the score was still 0-0. And well, everything considered, I can live with that.

SAEFL Season 12 WEEK 19

Defrosted Tunafish are on 5th position, and although the title may be far away, direct promotion isn’t, so when playing against the number last, Claudio of course wanted to win to stay in the race. However, England U21 may be the team at the bottom, they have a pretty good team though, and since they found a fresh manager in Martin this week (and we all know that new managers can be full of surprises), Claudio did not take any chances and played a boost. That and the home advantage should do the trick. Well: it did. DT was a lot stronger than EU, not just because of that home bonus plus the boost, but also because Martin got a roster that apparently had not heard of the term “rotation”, and was forced to give some players a deserved rest. Of course, these were important players. The fact that the result in the end was “only” 14-10, was because of the difference in GK (10 against 9 for EU), plus the fact that even without the star players, EU still has a pretty good team, which makes it too bad for Martin that they haven’t been able to win more points this season. The 3 points for DT keeps them very much in the race for direct promotion, and who knows what more? The loss for EU makes it even harder for them to escape relegation.

SAEFL Season 12 WEEK 19

Oaklake City have been doing well lately. They managed to climb the table from the relegation zone, to almost the top half. A victory this week would mean reaching the top half for sure, after we have seen DS play 0-0 earlier. However, this would not be easy, as this weeks match is an away game against Point of Napier, and PN is the number 2 on the table. After the draw for EW, Kelly could walk away and steady here 2nd position by beating OC. And that is exactly what she did! That, plus the fact that Keith apparently thought that this match would be a good opportunity to rest players, because there will be other matches that are easier to win, made that PN was a lot stronger. Not even the red card for CF Ericsson could change anything about that. Out of 6 chances, PN managed to score 4, while OC did not create any chances at all. So, PN stay in the race, while Keith and OC will be rested next week!

SAEFL Season 12 WEEK 19

Deo Volente against Newton Heath is a relegation battle, as we see the nrs. 9 and 11 fight each other. There was a lot at steak here, and that showed on the pitch: no less than 3 players were shown a red card. 2 of them were for DV players, and that of course ruined all Otto’s plans. DV did not even get 100 EMP in this match, and since NH still managed to reach 112, that of course was enough for Robert and his team to beat DV:5-0 With the victory, NH now has 16 points as well, but remain on 11th place because of their bad goal difference. DV also fall into the relegation zone, after FU won their match.

SAEFL Season 12 WEEK 19

I already stated that the DL against TB match was the match of the week. Seems that I have to correct myself, as we have 2 matches of the week! Lisbon United and Adirondak Renegades are, in my opinion, the strongest teams in div2. AR is in fact leading the table, while LU are behind in points (6 points, to be precise), but that was because Nuno has been unbelievably unlucky so far this season. However, this home match against AR would be an excellent opportunity for LU to do something about the 6 point gap, and make things in the top of div 2 even more exciting than it already was. That is exactly what Nuno intended, and it will be no surprise that he played a grudge. Don on the other side, showed himself a brave manager. You see, AR is 5 points ahead of the nr. 2 team. Which means that Don can afford to lose one match (maybe even 2) So, he could save this grudge for one of the remaining 6 matches, lose this match while resting players, and be fully fit, which would almost for sure result in a position that would grant direct promotion. However, Don wants more than just a promotion to div 1, he wants the glory of the title, and on that road to the title, there is nothing more glorious than beating your strongest opponent. Which is why Don didn't care for doing math or playing tactics and strategy this week, no, he played a grudge as well, with his strongest team, and went for it. AR were unlucky to see their newly bought star player, DS Brant, had to leave the field injured. But even in spite of that, Nuno showed us all that LU really is quite a team: they really show strong enough to fit in div 1 and not be in trouble. That is....if Nuno can keep the jinx away! This week at least, he could, and that led to a well deserved victory and 3 important points for LU. LU catch EW now, after their draw, and climb to 3rd position, still 1 point behind PN, and 3 behind AR. EW is 1 point behind LU, so still everything can be turned around in a week, which means that thing in the top of the div 2 table remain incredibly exciting!
