DIVISION 3 GAMES

Smoking Guns against Falcons is the number 2 against the number 11, and that showed. SG was much better in their home match, and I bet that one of the reasons was that Nik wanted to use this match to rest players, as an away game against SG is too hard to go for a surprise. The difference in NSL was already 26, so there was no doubt about the outcome in this one-way-traffic match, with a very logical 20-0 result in the end. SG stay in the race for the title (although with only 6 matches left , if the 9 point gap stays, it will be more and more difficult), and stay ahead of FE, at least 1 point, and who knows what happens if FE don’t win their game. FA remain at the bottom of div 3, but they don’t have to worry about relegation, so they can invest all energy in rebuilding.

SAEFL Season 12 WEEK 19

Melchester Rovers and the African Selection are 2 top half teams. I don’t think that they have any chance at winning the title (and I guess Bruce and Colin don’t think so either), and in fact, I don ‘t think they will be the teams to watch for the second place either. However, they are very much in the race for the playoffs, and in fact they both already are on a playoff spot. So, in this clash against each other, it was important not to lose points. Where Colin played a strong defense, with a boost, Bruce surprised us when he gave up on this match, saved his boost and rested players. Which in fact could be a very clever move: if he played his best team plus a boost, just like Colin did now, I think both teams would have been almost equally strong, and chances would have been 50% that the game would have ended a draw, plus 25% chance on a victory for either side. So, why go almost all the way when there’s 75% chance that you will lose at least 2 points anyway? Bruce decided to back out, and now he’s fully rested to either surprise a big team, or be almost sure of 3 points against a less difficult team. However, on the other side, even when reading about this theory, I don’t think that Colin will mind about having played the boost while he may have got away with it without playing that boost. AS win 3 points and catch MR, and maybe even VA, so they win 3 important points in their fight for a playoff ticket.

SAEFL Season 12 WEEK 19

Vitesse Arnhem and Trav Spoodle are another two teams fighting for a playoff ticket. VA is on 5th postion, while TS is only 2 points behind on 8th position. In this match against each other, neither Fred nor Warren played more than 90 NSL. Fred tried to make up for that by playing a boost, but he better had picked another tactics, as he played CP with almost no bonus players. TS countered that with maybe not the strongest WP, but at least when it came to the positions, they had the ideal mix: 3 random defenders, 2 MF’s, 2 W’s, 1 S and 2 CF’s. That is what SAEFL is all about, and that is what TS won the match: 13-7. TS catch up with VA and pass them on the table. They can even climb one more position, but that depends on what SS will have done.

SAEFL Season 12 WEEK 19

Aros VSK are the team at the bottom, while Fantastic Eleven is on 3rd position, and very much in the race for at least direct promotion. FE has won 3x as many points as AV (30 against 10), and based on that, you might expect an easy win for FE. But that was not the case here. The home advantage for AV, plus the fact that in spite of their poor league position, AV don’t have such a bad team after all, plus the fact that Clive and FE may have not gone all the way, made that the teams were almost equally strong. Mind you, I’m not saying that FE took it easy here, or underestimated AV, as Clive did play 92.50 NSL, and for div 3 that is quite a number already. Nonetheless, I don’t think that Clive would have expected the difference between AV and FE to be this small, and although FE did not have the luck to win this game (after all, they did have more chances, 29 against 27), the 15-15 in the end can also be called a fair result. 1 point each, and with that, FE lose 2 important points in their race for the runner up position. They stay 3rd however.

SAEFL Season 12 WEEK 19

Blue Storm against Speedsters is a bottom half match in div 3. But where Blue Storm is in 10th position, and has only theoretical chances on a playoff ticket, Speedsters are the number 7, and it was only on goal difference that they weren't a top half team. After we have already seen VA lose their game, SS has a good chance now to really make it to the top half. A draw would be enough, since their goal difference is better than VA's. But Brandon was so unlucky, he saw 2 of his players being sent off (speaking of which: there were a lot of red cards this week!), and because of that, BS could not cope with the SS attack. The 9-5 in the end was fair (although Shaun has to realize he was lucky with those red cards for BS!), and now SS is a top half team.

SAEFL Season 12 WEEK 19

Stannington Historical are leading div 3 by a landslide. Are they really that good? Yes they are! In a match against Adelaide Kickers, who are in the race for the playoffs, they show that even with ten players -after the sending off of H.Ellraiser already in the 2nd minute- they are still much better than AK. Len played the usual strong WP, and smashed AK:25-6. Sure, that had also everything to do with the fact that David decided to rest players, but in fact that also reflect SH's strength. Nonetheless: 3 points for SH, who are heading for the title, and AK will be a little more rested for the remaining games, so who knows how close they'll get to the playoffs.
